Potential spoilers below the cut, but a super interesting article.
Some non-spoiler pull quotes:
Tom is my producing partner in a true sense. Before we had any writers or directors, it was Tom and I for months building this story out. We had a 30-page document that was like, This is what the show is: TVA, He Who Remains — even Victor Timely was in that first document years ago. And it’s just carried through. -- This is maybe — not maybe — this is the first Marvel series to never have any additional photography. The story that is on screen is the story we set out to make. -- We were casting, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was playing in L.A. and in New York, but it hadn’t gone nationwide yet. I think it was going the very next week. We had gotten a call from our casting director who said, “Hey, I’m about to put together a list for OB — just initial thoughts. But before I do that, I really think you guys should meet Ke, and I think it should be Ke. I think you guys should meet with him quick, because probably by Monday, he’s going to have a lot of offers for different things.”
Of the eight live-action TV shows that Marvel Studios has produced for Disney+ to date, only one has concluded with the explicit promise of a second season: That would be “Loki,” the outrageously entertaining series about Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief and his metaphysical exploits in the Time Variance Authority.
It turns out, those plans were already in the works before a second of “Loki” had ever streamed. As executive producer Kevin Wright explains to Variety, he and Hiddleston began talking about Season 2 of the show while in production on the third episode of Season 1.
“As we were shooting the ‘Lamentis’ episode, Tom and I started having lots of conversations about how this world could build out, how we dive deeper into it,” he says. “A large part of what we wanted to do was not trying to repeat ourselves, and not try to play the hits.” At the same time, he adds, they also wanted to make sure didn’t start Season 2 by “fast-forwarding through the drama” of the Season 1 finale.
And so much happened in that finale. To recap: Loki and his variant-turned-potential-soulmate Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) arrive at the end of time, where they meet the creator of the TVA, He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) — the variant of the supervillain Kang who won a massive multiversal war. To prevent future Kangs from emerging, He Who Remains has used the TVA to maintain a single, sacred timeline — pruning away trillions of potential lives in the process. He gives Sylvie and Loki an impossible choice: Replace him as the head of the TVA, or kill him and bring forth an infinite number of Kangs.
Loki wants the first option; Sylvie wants the second. She wins, kills He Who Remains, and boots Loki back to an alternate version of the TVA, where previous compatriots Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) don’t remember ever meeting him.
Variety has screened the first four (of six) episodes of “Loki,” and without spoiling anything, Season 2 picks up pretty much exactly where the first season left off — before then charting its own storytelling path. The full cast has returned, including Gugu Mbatha-Raw as former TVA judge Ravonna Renslayer and Eugene Cordero as TVA functionary Casey. And Majors returns as well as He Who Remains, in addition to another Kang variant, a 19th century inventor named Victor Timely. They’re joined by new actors including Kate Dickie (“Game of Thrones”), Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”) and recent Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan as TVA technician Ouroboros, aka “OB.”
Behind the scenes, there have been some changes from Season 1. The series’ original director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldron both stepped back to focus on other projects. In their places, “Moon Knight’s” Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have stepped in as lead directors, and Season 1 writer Eric Martin stepped up as head writer for Season 2.
Tumblr media
To delve into the second season of “Loki,” Wright talked with Variety about casting Quan just before his performance in the multiverse spectacular “Everything Everywhere All at Once” changed the actor’s life forever; what the future of “Loki” the show and Loki the character might be following Season 2; and how Majors’ arrest in March for assault did (or did not) affect their plans for Season 2.
What were the discussions like about how to approach Season 2?
I think we had to just keep reminding ourselves that the TVA is a great world, let’s live in the drama of what we’re creating there. Which means not fast-forwarding through the drama that they just decided to stop pruning timelines, but also staying in the emotional turmoil that Loki and Sylvie are coming into this season with.
Also, there were certain things in Season 1 that felt like they were maybe a risk, and we didn’t know how the audience would respond. Once we realized that they embraced it, it felt like a lot of freedom to go further.
What did you feel was a risk?
In a very early draft of the script that Michael Waldron had written, that first Time Theater conversation between Mobius and Loki was maybe a couple of pages. And then a lot of other big Marvel-y action things happened afterwards, and we all went, “That’s not the interesting stuff. This Time Theater conversation is interesting. That’s what the show could be.” If we are really diving into the character-driven philosophy and introspection of self, that’s quite different than the last 10 years of Marvel movies. Would the audience follow us along on that?
Tom Hiddleston famously held seminars on the character of Loki for Season 1. Did he do anything like that for Season 2?
No, because we tried to bring back as much crew as we could from Season 1. It was largely the same team. Obviously, we went from Atlanta to London [for production], but a lot of our department heads carried over, so there was an institutional knowledge that was built in. And Tom is my producing partner in a true sense. Before we had any writers or directors, it was Tom and I for months building this story out. We had a 30-page document that was like, This is what the show is: TVA, He Who Remains — even Victor Timely was in that first document years ago. And it’s just carried through.
So even as Kate Herron kind of handed the reins over at the end of Season 1, there is an institutional knowledge that comes with us being the glue between the seasons.
You mentioned He Who Remains and Victor Timely. You finished shooting Season 2 in 2022, but did Jonathan Majors’ arrest for assault in March resulted in any changes to the show?
No. This is maybe — not maybe — this is the first Marvel series to never have any additional photography. The story that is on screen is the story we set out to make. We went out there with a very specific idea of what we wanted this to be, and we found a way to tell it in that production period. It’s very much what’s on screen on Disney+.
It’s clear that Majors plays an integral role this season, and you just alluded that Marvel usually does additional photography on all its titles. So was there any discussion about making changes to the show, given the uncertainty about what was happening with Majors?
No. And that mainly came from — I know as much as you do at the moment. It felt hasty to do anything without knowing how all of this plays out.
How early into the writing of Season 2 did you decide to cast Ke Huy Quan as OB?
We were in London, so I had at least some version of our scripts. The way the process works, they’re always being rewritten, but OB was in there, and his introduction scene was almost exactly as originally written. I would like to say it was in early spring, which was maybe just two months before we started shooting. We were casting, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was playing in L.A. and in New York, but it hadn’t gone nationwide yet.
So that that Friday, myself, Justin and Aaron, two of our directors, had gotten on a Zoom with Ke. We pitched him the show and this character. We shared that introduction scene with him and maybe the full script. And then we called in the big guns that Monday; Kevin Feige got on the phone with him and said, “Ke, I know you read the script. I know you talked to the guys. We really think you should do this. I really want you to join the Marvel family.” And he had already made up his mind over the weekend. It was like, “I’m there. I’ve been a huge fan of this for a long time.”

In Season 1, the show explored several time periods and locations outside the TVA, but in the first four episodes of this season, you stick to just 1880s Chicago, 1970s London and 1980s in the Midwest. How did you come to that decision to focus more on the TVA and building out its history?
Because that felt like where so much of our core character conflict was going to come from. There was so much intersectionality of our characters and what they think of the TVA. Sylvie wants to burn it down because the apple is rotten, as she says. Loki sees it as potentially the only form of defense against whatever else is coming in a war with Kang. Mobius and B-15, they’ve dedicated their whole life to it. They’re not quite ready to give it up. Renslayer feels like she’s been keeping it together, and you get a real understanding of why she thinks she should be the one to get this thing back on track.
We want everybody to be in the gray area — they’re neither good nor bad. They might make bad choices or heroic choices, but they are trying to figure out who they are. The TVA felt like the place where we could maximize that storytelling and learn more about those characters through that. But also stay tuned, because we are going to more places [in Episodes 5 and 6].
Do you think the TVA could start to appear in other titles in the MCU?
I would love that. Look, I’ve been siloed in on “Loki” for almost five years now, by the time this show finishes, and with every filmmaker who has put their hands on the show, we’ve all had the same conversations: It feels like the TVA could really be this exciting connective tool for all of this storytelling. And we’ve only seen a fraction of it. We’re dealing very specifically with this one smaller department with Mobius and B-15 and Renslayer, but you look out at those vistas — this place is infinite. The exciting thing to us is there certainly are more stories to be told there. We’ve carved out our own little corner of the sandbox and built something cool. We’re hoping that other people want to come and play with it.
One of the things I’ve most enjoyed about “Loki” is how it’s telling its own story, but have you considered bringing more of the MCU into it?
Yes, in both seasons of writers’ rooms. It always felt wrong to go too far outside of the box of things that would directly contribute to Loki’s character arc in these two seasons. So that’s why we get [Jaimie Alexander as] Sif in there [in Season 1], we play with the variants in the void and various levels of Asgard-specific storytelling. But while we’ve had nearly 12 hours of storytelling, it never feels like we have enough time. Eventually, just handling the stories of our ensemble and not shortchanging them has always been priority number one.
Now, Season 1 and 2 were always built to be two chapters of the same book. The hope would be going forward, there are more books that we can tell these stories with. I certainly think that we could start doing that.
Would there be a Season 3 of “Loki”? Is the future of the show finite or more open-ended?
I think it’s open-ended. We certainly did not develop this season going, “We have to tee up Season 3” — in the way that we did with Season 1, where there was a very specific, “Hey, we’re coming back.” But I also think that where this show goes, there certainly can be many, many, many more stories told with Loki in the “Loki” world, and in other worlds connected to Loki, the character.
Do you think Loki would ever rejoin the larger world of the MCU?
That’s the hope. I don’t want to — yeah. I think the the sun shining on Loki and Thor once again has always been the priority of the story we’re telling. But for that meeting to really be fulfilling, we have to get Loki to a certain place emotionally. I think that’s been the goal of these two seasons.

Chapter 1
Tessa Owens is four years younger the her older brother Tyler Owens, they have been joined at the hip since Tessa was born. Tyler has always taken his big brother role very seriously, even scaring off boys he didn’t think were good enough for her.
Tessa always wanted to be like her big brother, but her parents wouldn’t let her bull ride so chose to run barrels. But made sense for Owens's kids to follow in their parent's footsteps their mom was a pro barrel racer and their dad was a bull rider. He stopped once Tyler was born but encouraged his kids to follow their dreams. Tessa did four years on a rodeo scholarship at the U of A for meteorology and minored in photography, she was on Storm Par before she found out who Rigs was, she’s also Javi Rivera
Tyler and Tessa stopped by their parent's house before heading up to Oklahoma, Tessa would leave her truck there and ride with Tyler and Boone up “Tyler you bring your sister back down here alive.” Their mom said, “I always do mama.” He said hugging her “Tes keep both these boys in line.” Their mom said pointing to both Boone and Tyler, Boone he known the family since he was in middle school, and he would help Tyler get ready before his rides “Mama I don’t think I can.” She laughed hugging her the three walked out “How do I always end up in the back.” She said crossing her arms “You're the baby.” Boone said hugging her “Get off me.” She said shrugging her brother's best friend off “Oh you love me.” Boone said smiling “Not right now.” She said getting in the truck, Javi messaged her earlier saying his crew was in Oklahoma, she hated one of his partners Scott, to the man was a dick and not to mention who they worked for “Tes you can have the front seat.” Boone offered her “No it’s fine.” She said buckling up, they met with the others before heading out to Oklahoma
When they pulled into the gas station Tessa saw the Storm Par trucks and smiled to herself, Javi noticed when Tessa got out of her brother's truck and smiled, he messaged her “You going to say hi to them?” Tyler asked her, “Nah.” She said, shaking her head, she went in with the rest of the crew “Look at them nice shirts no wrinkles.” Lily said, “Looks like they are ready for church.” Boone said, “Hey I used to wear that.” She said looking at them both “Thank God you don’t anymore.” Lily said, putting her arm around Tessa “Not going to hold the door?” “Too heavy?” Dani questioned Boone, as Tessa walked out she stopped to look around “You know your brother has an effect.” Javi said standing next to her “I know.” She sighed looking at him, “Hey, be careful setting it up.” She smiled at him, “I will be.” He said he wanted to grab her hand, but her brother was there “When can we tell him?” Javi asked her “I don’t know, they don’t like you, well the guy that is your investor.” She said, looking at him, “I know.” He said looking down “I gotta go, I'll see you later.” She smiled before walking to her brother's truck “I thought you weren’t going to say hi?” Tyler questioned her “Shut up.” She said they drove off the same way Storm Par did, her brother passed Javi and sped off to the tornado, she made sure her camera was ready to go to get pictures of the storm, they drove into the storm and set off fireworks as soon as it passed, Tessa realized she should have been with the others to get the shots
Later that night they all went to the hotel, Tyler fixing something on the truck everyone was gathered around the truck, “city girl!” Tyler called seeing Kate, the grouped whooped, it made Kate stop “The cells to the west will choke each other out she said.” Tyler looked at Kate “And the one to the east will put on a show.” “Well didn’t throw you of the scent.” Kate said “See that what makes Tyler famous.” Boone said pointing at Tyler “You mean on YouTube?” Kate questioned her tone going higher “Uh, y-yeah we’re- were on the YouTube.” Boone stuttered over his words “We got what? About a million subscribers now, huh?” Boone questioned the group in sure “Yes sir.” Lily and Tessa both said “Kate what?” Ben asked, Kate gave Ben a confused look “Your surname, just incase I include you in my piece.” Ben said getting ready to write it down “Oh um, just Kates fine.” Kate said nodding “She’s a tricky one.” Tyler smirked “Actually you made a good call earlier. The other cell it looked stronger but the cap never broke.” Boone said, Tessa nodded agreeing with Boone “What’s a cap?” Ben questioned, it wasn’t to anyone in particular “It’s the temperature inversion in the mid part of the lower atmosphere. It inhibits a storm from forming.” Dexter said, Boone and Tessa nodded “Right. Okay. Good.” Ben said “Where you guys all meet? Did you, uh, did you study meteorology at the U of A?” Kate asked the group, the group laughed “No. No.” Dexter laughed shaking his head “All right, Kate, Me? You know, I just flow with the wind. You know what I’m saying.” Boone said holding his arms up and moving “Boone be careful.” Tessa said where she was sitting on top of the truck “Yeah, I-I never went to, like, school or nothing. Um, Tyler, he-he studied metrology, though, so did Tes.” Boone said pointing to the siblings “Him?” Kate questioned shocked “Yeah. You know, he’s a cowboy scientist, you know. He’s got this natural instinct.” Boone said getting cut off by Tyler “Okay, Boone.” Tyler said speaking over Boone “He taught me everything I know so.” Boone said “Boone that enough.” Tyler said looking at his best friend “You know, our crews not like your crew, Kate. We don’t need PhDs and fancy gadgets to do what we do. I guarantee you these guys have seen more tornadoes than anyone else in this lot combined.” Tyler said pointing to his group “Is that right?” Kate asked him “Do think there’s a chance we’ll see one tomorrow?” Ben asked looking up at Kate “Oh-yeah.” Dani and Boone said at the same time “Out break baby.” Boone said adding a little yip at the end “You know if you keep up maybe we’ll put you in the episode.” Tyler said grabbing his beer and taking a sip of it “Wow.” Kate said amazed, Tyler smirked at Kate “Where you chasing tomorrow.” Tessa asked her, she knew Kate was good. She heard the story’s for Javi when he wanted to tell them “Oh, no, no, no. Not falling for that again. Kates from New York you. Can’t trust a thing she says.” Tyler said looking at his sister “Well, can always trust a guy that puts his face on T-Shirt.” Kate said and then walked away. There was a bunch of ohs from the group. Tyler smiled and watched Kate walk away “man that was good.” Boone said “Oh my, God look at his face.” Lily said “That was spicy wasn’t?” Boone questioned. Tyler looked back down at what he was fixing. Tessa went to get off the truck, once she was down she grabbed her bag “I’m going to head to bed.” Tessa said, “Oh come on Tes.” Boone said, holding out a beer “No, I'm tired.” She said shaking her head, she walked to her room and got changed before heading to Javi’s room, he had sent her his room number earlier.
She knocked and Javi answered the door, his hair was still wet from the shower he had taken, he smiled and he brought her into the room, they laid on the bed “Why were so far?” She questioned him “Kate got scared.” He shrugged “Oh.” She said looking at him “I don’t blame her, it's her first tornado in five years.” He said looking down at her, “You get any good pictures?” He asked her, she shook her head “Why not?” He questioned her “It disappeared too fast.” She sighed “Also I was worried about you.” She said looking at him “That was cool, your brother shooting fireworks into it.” He smiled, he did think it was cool some of the stuff Tyler did, did he agree with his methods hell no he didn’t, Tessa laid her head over his heart, and listened to it as she traced random patterns along his abdomen as he ran his hand up and down her arm “This feels like old times.” He chuckled, “It does.” She smiled at him, Javi reached down and brought the covers around them and pulled Tessa closer to him before they both fell asleep.
When Tessa woke up it was one am. She needed to get to her room, so she left a note for Javi and stole his hoodie, before heading back to her room, she fell back asleep she was woken up by a knock on her door “Tessa rise and shine.” Boone yelled through the door “I’m going.” She yelled back, she got dressed and threw on Javi’s hoodie, before gathering her stuff and heading downstairs, she was with the crew getting stuff ready for the day “You sleep okay.” Boone asked her “Yes I sleep good every night do I wish it was my own bed hell yes.” She smiled at him, she watched as her brother talked to Kate and then Kate walk off “Here we go.” She mumbled “Pack up the burrito we got a winner.” Tyler said, “Lily get your drone in the air we need your video stream.” Tyler said, “Ride with us.” “Northwest 10 o’clock.” Dexter said hitting his iPad “That’s the one.” Tyler said getting antsy “Let’s ride.” Dexter laughed as he went to the caravan, Tessa hopped in the caravan, and Tessa messaged Javi good luck, Tessa laughed as they passed Storm Par “Let go.” Tessa said, “You are way too into this this morning.” Dani laughed shaking her head “No they did not just pass us.” Tessa said looking as Javi and Kate passed them “Shit.” Tessa said looking at the twin tornadoes “There’s a name for that.” Dexter stammered “Just enjoy it, man.” Dani said “Fujiwhara Effect.” Dexter yelled remembering it, Tessa watched the tornadoes “Already got Tyler we gotta make a choice left or right?” Dani asked over the radio “Alright we’re taking the right.” Tyler said over the radio “Okay let’s go right.” Tessa said, they left the Storm Par and went towards the right twin. Tessa watched as the tornado disappeared, and the crew got out and watched the other one “Hey we should have gone with her.” Dani said, Tessa watched the tornado knowing Javi was going to be right in the path of it “Come on.” She whispered while watching it, Tessa turned away and went to the truck and got in “What’s up with her.” Boone asked Tyler “Have no clue.” Tyler said, shaking his head, Tessa opened her door “It's heading for town.” Tessa yelled at the group, they drove to town and helped where they could, Tyler and Boone were looking for a lost dog, and Dexter, Dani, Lily, and Tessa were passing out food and water to people, Tessa watched Javi he walked to the Storm Par car and sighed “I hate the investor.” Tessa mumbled.
“Tessa.” Tyler said nodding his head towards the truck “Where we going?” She questioned him “Rodeo.” He said they had taken food to Kate before, going to the rodeo and watching Tessa listen to her brother and Kate “You ever seen anything like this city girl?” He asked her “You keep calling me that.” Tyler looked at Kate “You know I grew up on a farm, yeah Sapulpa. Couple hours from here.” Kate said putting her hands on her legs “This ain’t my first rodeo.” She said, “Yeah, learn something about you.” Tyler said looking at Kate, Tessa listened as her brother and Kate kept talking she kinda felt like a third wheel though, she wondered what Javi was doing, “I’m going back to the truck.” She said getting up “You not staying.” Tyler asked looking up at her, she shook her head, on her walk back she felt the wind pick up and started running to the truck to check the radar, she opened the door and turned on her laptop “Shit.” She said she heard the sirens, she got out of the truck and ran inside, she heard her brother and Kate asking questions “Do have a storm shelter?” Kate asked, “Maybe a basement?” Tyler asked “There’s a line here buddy.” A guy said, “We need to get these people underground now.” Tyler said, “Okay there’s no tornado 9 times out of 10 it’s false alarm.” A gal said fanning herself “We gotta find shelter fast.” Kate said, “Everybody come with me.” Kate said everyone ran to the pool, Tessa helped the little girl and mom into the opening along with Kate, Tessa closed her eyes as she held on to a pipe, Tessa could feel tears in her eyes, and she could hear the wind howling and then it stopping, they all got out and looked around. Tessa was standing looking around when she heard her name “Tes.” Boone yelled running to her “You okay.” He asked her, she nodded her head and hugged Boone, she looked over and saw Kate and Javi and Scott said something “You're shaking.” Boone said he could feel Tessa shaking, he didn’t know if it was her brush with death or the fact it was raining
Tyler saw Kate leaving and then saw his sister and Boone being approached by Javi “Hey you okay?” Javi asked her “She’s fine Storm Par.” Boone said, “Boone I’m going to grab my hoodie.” She said nodding towards Tyler’s truck, Javi followed her “You okay?” He asked, “Maybe ask me when I’m not coming to terms with the fact that I almost died.” She said not looking at him “Tes.” He said grabbing her hand, she looked up at him “Did you know?” She questioned him “About the storm on the radar?” He asked her “Did you know?” She questioned him, but he didn’t answer her “Javi answer the damn question.” She yelled, “I knew, it didn't look like it would amount and then it got its hook.” Javi said frustration in his voice “Thought you were supposed to tell me. Even if we aren’t on the same team.” She said before walking away from him “Tessa.” Javi yelled after her “Go get your data for that guy.” She yelled back and walked to her brother's truck

Is There A World For ‘Loki’ Beyond Season 2? EP Kevin Wright Sheds Light
Warning: the following interview contains spoilers about tonight’s first episode of season 2 of Loki
After Loki’s amiga Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) opted to kill He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) spurring multiple nefarious versions of the newbie villain across several timelines, Loki was sent back to where it all started: the bureaucratic, office grind of the TVA — but a very different one; one where his new best friend Mobius (Owen Wilson) doesn’t recognize him. Out of touch with his soulmate, Loki is trying to find his way back to her. However, like Chicken Little, he’s trying to tell everybody that the sky is falling; that Kang the Conqueror is coming their way. We talk with Marvel executive and Loki season 2 EP Kevin Wright, who is with the series from start to finish, script to post, about the daunting task of living up to what was a spectacular season one.
Tumblr media
EP and director Kate Herron left some big shoes to fill on Loki season one and I was shocked when she told Deadline she would not be returning for season 2. What went on there?
Kevin Wright: Throughout season one, I was constantly teasing her with, ‘Hey, when we come back for season two,’ and she said she made it very clear through shooting, she’s like, ‘This one’s it’ and I think it was purely from the…She really put everything into it, and look, COVID was right in the middle of shooting.
So, it was an even longer commitment than she had initially even signed up for, and while that was happening and while we were shut down, she was editing, and we were working together through that. I think she felt like she really put her heart and soul into it, and she wanted to be able to hand the storytelling reins over to other filmmakers, and her fingerprints are certainly on it, and she was somebody that, when we first met her, knew she was fully aligned with what we wanted to make.
So she departs, who do you go to from there? The new directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead? Were they driving the ship on season 2?
KW: There was a little bit of downtime. Before they even came on, (EP & star) Tom (Hiddleston) and I kind of recalibrated. Figured out what we wanted this new season to be. We spent a lot of time developing that. Eric Martin had come on roughly around additional photography on season one as our season two kind of lead writer, and so, the three of us just starting building out story.
And there was a long stretch of just writers’ room, developing these scripts, figuring out what it was going to be, while we figured out where we would go in the directing front. Pretty early on, we knew we were going to bump up (production designer) Kasra Farahani to direct, as well. He was with us in the writers’ room, so he had already taken on a big creative role there and had so much to do with the world-building in season one. (VFX Supervisor) Dan DeLeeuw even kind of came on fairly early just because he was with us in that post-production process of season one. And he’s such a storied brain, we brought him in, but yeah, we needed that captain. I had met with Justin and Aaron. I brought them into the studio before season one. We had met generally. I really liked them for Loki. We had already brought on Kate, and so we passed them off to another project, which ended up not working out, either, and then they ended up becoming Moon Knight.
So, they were guys who were in our system, that we liked and had been in the periphery of Loki, and while they were doing additional photography for Moon Knight, I recruited Kevin Feige, the big guns, to go in there and visit them on set and say, ‘Hey, we want you to take the reins of Loki and come in on that.’ So, it was like a meandering process, but it had felt like they were eventually going to come on and work on this.
Loki season one is perfect television in the Mr. Robot sense of the word. Coming off season one, what were the challenges? You’ve established this great world, great villain in Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains – was it a high bar to jump?
KW: Yes. Incredibly high bar. Partially, though, one of the biggest challenges was, early on, Tom and I just talking about not only was season one good, and then people liked it, which is not a given. We had a really great time making it, and it was a crazy time in the world, but it was, like, a really exciting, happy process for everybody involved, and coming back for a season two did feel a little bit like, well, how do we capture that lightning in a bottle again?
And so, we had a lot of conversations about we can’t just come back and try to play the hits and do what we did in season one, because even if we recapture it and do that again, it won’t be fulfilling, and I think there was a sense of we built something really cool, and the audience went along with it. It was big sci-fi weird stuff, and if they have bought it, it felt like we had a lot of, then, freedom to go further and deeper with these characters and not fast-forward. Like, it had this great cliffhanger.
Let’s pick up in that: what is the drama and the stakes of what is happening with Loki in the TVA with Sylvie? And I think anything that could be scary about picking up in a new season like this goes away when everybody just starts going, what is right for these characters? We’re not trying to build some bigger Marvel arc. We’re not trying to do this. If we’re true to these characters, we will deliver on what people liked about season one, and we can build the world out and dive deeper into these characters and their drama.
So, tonight we see that there’s cacophony. Loki returns to the TVA, Mobius forgets him. Sylvie’s lost. However, the TVA was destroyed in season one, and we come back to place where it’s still in existence. Was this just the best place to start with the mishegoss of timelines?
KW: I think, for us, the exciting thing then was, in that chaos of multiverse, to be able to play with those first few minutes of season two, being loose footing for Loki, trying to make sense of what is happening. Is this a different TVA, which shouldn’t make sense, because it’s outside of time? So, it’s not like it’s a different reality. Is this ours? Why don’t they remember him then?
And I think it just gave us a groundwork. We wanted to come in and not do the same thing in season two. We had a high bar that we wanted to hit, and a cyclical story structure is hard to do. Eric, our writer, even said, I think we can pull this off, but it’s going to be messy for a while, while we figure it out. That opening allowed us the tools and the groundwork to start telling this time-looping narrative, and it was sort of the mechanism to kind of get this whole thing rolling. That just gave us a lot of character drama.
Now Sylvie – we see her for a minute toward the end of episode one. That’s Loki looking into the future…
KW: Yeah. So, in the context of that, he’s been slipping in the past and to the present, and in that moment, he has slipped into the future, and so, he is seeing something in Sylvie that has yet to happen for him on his personal timeline, that will loop back around again.
Does Loki season 2 like other Marvel series bridge to another big movie in the near future? Clearly, the next Avengers: Kang Dynasty, but are there others?
KW: Nothing that I could say in the near future. The implications will ripple into other projects, though, certainly, and the TVA is an organization that will continue to have stories to tell, which is one of the exciting things about it to us.
Is there an arc here? Do you guys have, like, a five-season plan, a three-season plan, or do you take it season by season?
KW: We take it season by season, and there are certainly things that Tom and I and other casts have talked about of where we see this going, and I know there’s some excitement for that internally, but just from a storytelling standpoint, I think we always conceived of seasons 1 and 2 as a whole. That these are two chapters of the same book, and that season two is finishing that book, and there are other stories to be told there, but I think they would be new books, if that’s not too coy.
Are we going to be just as shocked as we were at the end of season one? I mean, season one was jaw-dropping.
I hope so, but what I will say is it’s not a cliffhanger. We want to be able to deliver real fulfillment in what we’re doing, but I do think it’ll be exciting and unexpected and everything people like about this show.

MARDI 23 JUILLET 2024 (Billet 3/3)
« TWISTERS » (2h 02min)

Fashion Spotlight: Kate Owen
We’re excited to kick off our Fashion Spotlight series with multi-talented Kate Owen. The young New York photographer (pictured below) has already worked with the likes of of French Vogue, The New York Times, W Magazine, Interview, Dior, Opening Ceremony, among many others. Her photos radiate originality and energy, and she’s just getting started...
Tumblr media
What work excites you the most?
On the one hand, I like pictures that tell a story.  I like real moments and flashes of delight. On the other hand, I like pictures that are confusing, that tell part of a story...but not the whole story.  I like to see something and come up with a bunch of different explanations for why.  As if I’m walking into a conversation and have no idea what they’re talking about.
What is your most distinct, unforgettable Fashion Week memory?
In 2015 I was shooting Prabal Gurung for Self Service. It was crazy backstage as usual – people and bags everywhere. The girls were all in their looks and the show was about to start.  I was kneeling down on the ground shooting the shoes, which had a stiletto heel like I felt I had never seen before – tall and sharp, when all of a sudden I feel something grazing my back and pulling me down to the floor.  Hanne Gaby Odiele hadn’t seen me and with those very same razor heels had torn my shirt and pinned me to the floor!  I always think how lucky I was that the angle wasn’t slightly different because the heel would have definitely punctured me and it would have been really bad scenario.
Tumblr media
What are you passionate about right now?
It’s difficult for me to pinpoint just one thing. I’m obsessed with shapes, colors and lines. I like when dimensionality is done in a really flat way. I think that’s part of what makes collage so interesting.  I like seeing how materials are used in different and pleasing ways.  I like words and conversations that speak but explain nothing at all. I like the chaos of the world.
What brings you satisfaction in fashion photography?
Fashion and fashion photography are interesting because they are a visual representation of the world.  People define themselves by the clothes they wear, whether they mean to or not. I find the idea of uniforms and signifiers really interesting. At the end of the day, I enjoy how fashion and the photography that surrounds it gives the wearer power.  Fashion allows individuals to be whoever they want to be, if they have the guts to do it.
Tumblr media
Are there female fashion creators that make you smile?
There are so many female artists of all kinds that make me smile! I’ve found myself recently enjoying work, and then only finding out later that it was a female creator.  That’s happening more and more, which is incredible.
Want to hear more from Kate? Of course you do. Follow her at @thekateowen, and check out more of her work here.
