a eulogy for a man i loved

The first night I met Jonathan, I was hanging out with my two friends, Katie and Lynn--and I was so mad that they had invited him over. Interacting with strangers isn’t my forte, and especially not interacting with strange men.

Jonathan McDermott was nothing that I expected, and everything that I needed at that moment in my life, at that crossroads. He was soft spoken, but he wasn’t a pushover. He would argue with you, but not for the sake of arguing. He was curious and bold.  He was a good listener--to me and to everyone around him. He was an artist through and through--in the way that he created, but also in the way that he approached life.

He was Jonathan Paul McDermott, sometimes John, never Johnny, Jthan to my friends, Reason when he created graffiti, Sweet Science to his boxing coach.

Everyone of you here, whether you traveled for days or half an hour, you know that I can’t boil Jonathan down to a few minutes. He was a skater punk, he was a graffiti artist, he was a lumberjack. He was an intensely hardworking student. He lost his keys, and stole your lighters. He was someone who skipped small talk. He was a man who felt things, who wasn’t afraid to express himself, who wasn’t afraid to call himself a feminist.

He was at times a sponsored skater, a rescue swimmer, a sculptor, an amateur boxer, a knifemaker, an almost absurdly strong weightlifter, a welder, a brazilian jiu jitsu enthusiast, an avid kayaker.

When you love someone for a volatile decade of your life--through your twenties and into your thirties--you see them change. Before his disease took hold, I had the pleasure and the privilege of watching Jonathan understand who he was meant to be, to begin to come into his own. He never stopped challenging his assumptions, challenging the status quo, challenging the boundaries of art and creation, challenging me to become my best self, and challenging himself to grow, to adapt.

There was no such thing as a lost cause when it came to his fellow human being--whether that meant helping out his family tirelessly or if it meant sitting with a depressed patient who simply needed someone to listen and treat them like a human being. He was patient and empathetic, with a deep well of compassion that is rare.

When I look around, I see his legacy. When I look at brother Frank, and his wife and son and their twins on the way, I see his legacy. When I look at myself, I see his legacy. Jonathan taught me how to learn, how to respect those who teach. He taught me to love the outdoors, which is now one of the most important parts of my life. He taught me how to do more with less, and how to do more for myself. He taught me to see myself through loving eyes, through an artist’s eyes, through a philosopher’s eyes, and he taught me that it’s okay to never lose your wonder, to never stop being amused by life.

Jonathan did not touch a life that he did not improve in some way, no matter how small. Whether he was making you laugh with a song he made up on the fly, or bringing you a soft drink at work, or creating something special for your home, he was never so happy as he was talking to people, making friends, and creating art.

If you are at a loss as to how you can honor Jonathan, how you can remember him, then I challenge you to find the joy, humor, philosophy, and art in the everyday. I challenge you to live like Jonathan, to be bold and unafraid to create, to fail. I challenge you to give help enthusiastically to anyone who needs it.

There are many measures of a life, but something I’ve always held onto is that I’d like to leave the world a better place than I found it. When I look at Jonathan’s life, there is no doubt in my mind that he accomplished that. Jonathan McDermott was a good man, and he’ll be remembered as a good man.

Jonathan, you were ridiculous, I am ridiculous, and we were great at being ridiculous together. You were a real jerk for this, but today I forgive you—for this, and for every hurt we never got a chance to fix. I’ll never stop loving you, you were more loved than you knew, and you’re more missed than you ever imagined.

‘For You’ 100 Amigos Show

El Kartel and Drew Young are proud to invite you to the comeback of this legendary 100+ works exhibition after an eight year hiatus. Our aim: Celebrate and uncover some of the city’s most exciting visual artists from a full spectrum of traditional mediums. Since 2003, El Kartel has been a staple when it comes to accessing the alternative and emerging arts community. Pablo Zamudio and his team have exhibited thousands of works, hosted countless attendees and, most importantly, continue to carve out space for artists in a city where brick and mortar has nearly become a fantasy. Accompanying the exhibit will be a weekend long Print Archive Exhibition presented/produced by The Jaunt from the Netherlands. The Jaunt is an incredibly unique project, sending artists all over the globe to realize their creative vision.
