Whumpmas in July Day 7: Brag about a creator or piece of whump you think is underrated

hello all, today i would like to hopefully introduce you to the wonderful work of @quietly-by-myself​ !!!!

his work is the hidden gem of the whump community. it’s SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD you have no idea. i want to focus on my favorite two stories of hers, which though totally separate, both take place in the same fantastical universe.

The Dark Side of the Sun

if you’re at all familiar with my own work, you know i go feral for whumper turned whumpee with former whumpee as caretaker. one of the best character dynamics out there. this series elevates that trope to another level. Cassius had previously tortured Hakon in cruel lab experiments, but now finds himself prisoner of King Myndill: Hakon’s caretaker. as Myndill tries to break Cassius and make him his new toy, Hakon is left wrestling with his morality.

it’s very recently reached completion at 9 chapters, so if you want something conclusive to read, this is for you! and BOY is the ending SATISFYING. never before have a read a whump series where i ROOT FOR THE WHUMPER, but this one did it.

Smoke, Salt, and Asbestos

AAAAAA this one has made me literally cry. i already talked about how much i love Briac, but seriously, the whumpee for this series is one of the best of all time. he lived his whole life believing himself to be human, only for his entire world to come crashing down when it’s revealed he’s a changeling. his family, friends, community, everyone he’s ever known turning against him, having his very identity stripped away, all for a baby-swap that happened when he was an infant and he had no control over.

and that doesn’t even touch the OTHER characters, because they’re all AMAZING. Sylvanus, Dubheasa, i love them all. this series is full of so much love and care and hope. fundamentally, this is a story about characters learning to love & accept themselves through all the trauma. it’s beautiful.
