Well, I accidentally veered away from a little angst and stumbled into patented Mom Panic instead. I hope that's alright! This comfort writing brain of mine likes to subvert the guidelines.

Carina’s brow furrows as she swipes a hand across Liam’s tiny forehead.

He’d woken up fussy, whimpering all the way through a diaper change. It’s out of character for him – especially when she’d been singing. Especially when she’d rocked him and held him.

But then he’d been disinterested in a bottle, choosing instead to bury his face in her shirt, screaming bloody murder because she’d dared to sit down on the couch.

And now his skin is warm to the touch; warmer than is usual.

Carina sighs, swaying side to side with their little boy cradled in her arms as she dials Maya’s phone. Her shift won’t be over for another few hours, but it’s too early to go to the pharmacy and she’s not sure Maya’s unpacked whatever box her stash of infant first aid supplies ended up in.

Maya answers on the first ring, her bright smile shining through the phone on the other end. She’s seated in the beanery, the shoulders of other firefighters visible behind her. “You’re up early,” she greets.

The smile falls instantly when she hears Liam’s wail.

“What’s wrong?” she asks, rising from her seat. The beanery disappears behind her, quickly replaced by the hallway outside the gym. “Is everything okay?”

Carina nods, trying to quell Maya’s fear despite the racing of her own heart inside her chest. “Liam has a fever,” she explains, swinging her body a little more forcefully to help him quiet a bit again, “And I don’t know where that box is.”

“Okay,” Maya nods, looking around herself. Almost immediately, she’s moving again, pounding down the stairs with the station walls bouncing behind her. There’s a sharp flash of morning light and then a rush of red as she passes the engine. “What do we need?” she asks, apparently arrived at the aid car supply cabinets.

“No, no,” Carina sighs, entranced by this version of her wife who’d raid the fire department’s stock for their baby boy. “He is okay. Just stop at the pharmacy on the way home.”

“Okay,” Maya nods, slamming the cabinet doors, “I just have to let Andy know I’m leaving, then.”

Despite herself, Carina laughs. “Bambina,” she says, drawing Maya to a halt, “Take a breath.”

Shakily, Maya does as she’s told.

“We are okay,” Carina reminds her, tilting the phone so Maya can see that Liam’s tears have momentarily dried, his eyes fallen closed with his own exhaustion. “Finish your shift and then come home with some acetaminophen.”

“Okay,” Maya repeats, staring lovingly through the phone at Liam’s little face. “You promise he’s alright?”

Carina nods, leaning down to kiss his tiny cheek. It’s difficult, with the phone clutched in her other hand, but she manages. Maya’s smiling even wider when she surfaces again.

“He’ll be even better once you’re home to cuddle him.”

Maya blows a kiss, setting her hand against the screen to deliver it safely. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

little!chae has just been having such a hard time recently and one day when she’s regressed she just has a meltdown and nayeon walks in to chaes room nd sees the poor girl sobbing uncontrollably and just holds her for for the rest of the night :(

Chaeyoung tended to regress fairly often. Nayeon was never entirely sure why, and she hadn't mustered up the courage to ask her. She had a feeling it had to do with some sort of trauma, based on what she knew about Chaeyoung, but besides that, all Nayeon knew was that when Chaeyoung slipped into a smaller mindset, she needed to be there for her.

This made going places without her a lot harder, but recently Chaeyoung was doing fine enough for Nayeon to go out without worrying much.

"Hey Chae! You got a sec?" Nayeon asked, sitting down onto the couch next to Chaeyoung, who was doing some work on her laptop.

Chaeyoung looked up and closed her laptop. "Sure, what's up?" She replied, smiling as always.

"So I was just talking to Momo. I guess her and a few of the other girls were planning on going to a concert tonight, but Tzuyu had to cancel so she offered me her ticket."

Nayeon paused to read Chaeyoung’s expression, which hadn't changed much aside from a quirked brow. "The show is sold out and I've been wanting to go to this concert for ages. Will you be okay if I go?"

She watched Chaeyoung’s facial expression completely change to a slightly concerned look as the blonde pondered the question for a moment before nodding. "I should be okay, Nayeon, don't worry. Go have fun." Chaeyoung stated, a smile slowly coming on her face again.

"Alright awesome. Just text me if you need anything, okay?" Nayeon asked, rubbing her shoulder. Chaeyoung looked up and nodded.

A few hours later, Nayeon left the house with the others. She checked up on Chaeyoung one last time before she left, and was relieved to find Mina hanging out with her.

Everyone was having fun at the concert, and it was getting somewhat late, but Nayeon wasn't tired at all, which was unusual. What was also unusual was the fact that nobody had texted her in ages. There was always at least one person talking to her, but tonight there was no one. She truly needed a break.

12 AM rolled around and that's when she got a text from Mina. She hardly read it and didn't even bother texting back, instead she went into the bathroom and called her.

"What happened to her?" She asked.

"I'm going to be so honest with you, I have no idea. We were watching a show, and next thing I knew, she was throwing her phone on the ground and speeding her ass up to her room. I checked on her and asked about it but all she said was 'Mama'. So I don't know if something happened with her mom or something, but she's really upset and she didn't want me to stay." Mina replied.

Nayeon took a deep breath. "Tell her I'm coming home. Get her some water and maybe one of the juice boxes in the fridge if there are any left. But only if it's the fruit punch one, she won't drink the apple one." She didn't wait for Mina to respond, instead she hung up and left the venue.

After what felt like way too long, Nayeon got home and practically ran inside.

"Shit, that was fast." Mina said as she sat down on the couch.

"Yeah no there was basically no traffic. Is she in her room?" Nayeon asked, tossing the keys to Mina, who nodded. Nayeon went upstairs and knocked on the door. "Chae? It's Nayeon. I'm coming in, okay?"

She heard nothing but a sob as she opened the door and saw Chaeyoung curled up in her blankets on her bed. Nayeon sat down on the bed next to her and placed her hand on her back. "Hey sweetheart." She frowned.

Chaeyoung quickly sat up and immediately hugged her. She gripped Nayeon's shirt tightly as she cried into her shoulder. Nayeon wrapped her arms around her and shushed her, rubbing her arm gently. "It's okay, honey. It's okay. Mama's here now."

They stayed like that for a few minutes as Chaeyoung calmed down. Once she stopped crying, Nayeon pulled away and wiped her tears. "Can you tell me what happened?" She asked. Chaeyoung shook her head.

"Not now." The girl replied, resting her head on her caregiver's chest.

Nayeon accepted that and reached over to her nightstand to grab a couple tissues. She took Chaeyoung’s hand and gave her them. "Blow your nose sweetie."

Chaeyoung blew her nose and crumpled up the tissues. She tried to toss them in the trash bin in their room, but she missed. She looked at Nayeon and frowned.

"Don't worry about it right now. Do you have a drink? I told Mina to get you some juice and water." She said.

"Water's gone. She gave me apple though." Chaeyoung huffed, unhappy with Mina’s thought process.

Nayeon sighed and rolled her eyes. "I told her specifically not to do that. Good to know she doesn't listen though, huh?" She laughed.

And then Chaeyoung laughed. Progress was being made. "I want the good juice though."

"Do you want me to go get you some good juice and a snack?" Nayeon asked, taking Chaeyoung’s hand in hers.

Chaeyoung nodded, but as Nayeon got up, she grabbed onto her arm. "Don't go."

Nayeon smiled softly. Of course her girl was clingy right now, what did she expect? "Do you want to come with me, Chae?"

"Yeah." Chaeyoung pouted at her and grabbed her hand again, still holding onto her arm with her other hand.

"Okay, let's go, you little koala." Nayeon said, helping her off the bed and grabbing the apple juice box as well. "If Mina’s still home, you can yell at her."

Chaeyoung shook her head. "I don't wanna be mean."

As they got further down the stairs, Nayeon got closer to Chaeyoung’s ear and whispered. "You can do something less mean then." She thought for a second before handing her the apple juice box. "Throw this at her."

"Wouldn't that hurt her?" Chaeyoung questioned.

"Nah, she'll be fine. Just be gentle." Nayeon warned as they got off the stairs.

Mina was on her laptop with her headphones on, so she couldn't hear a thing. Chaeyoung giggled and snuck up behind her, but at a safe distance, and softly threw the juice box at the back of her head.

"What the fuck?" Mina yelled, taking off her headphones. She turned around and saw a somewhat scared Nayeon and smiley Chaeyoung running back to her. "Why? Why though?" She asked, just straight up confused. Chaeyoung laughed and stuck her tongue out at Mina before grabbing Nayeon’s arm and pulling her away. Nayeon followed and mouthed an apology to Mina.

"That was fun!" Chaeyoung admitted, pulling herself up to sit on the kitchen counter.

Nayeon smiled and opened the fridge. "It was." She grabbed a fruit punch juice box and handed it to her. "There you go, baby. It's the last one too, I'll probably go grab some more later this week."

Chaeyoung frowned and looked at Nayeon. "I want my cup."

Of course she wanted her cup. How could Nayeon forget? She basically never drank anything without her cup when she was little. Chaeyoung had a few different sippy cups that she kept in her room, but her favourite one was pink with a strawberry on it. She rarely used the other ones.

"Do you know where it is?" She asked. Nayeon nodded quickly and ran out of the kitchen, coming back with her sippy cup moments later. She held it up to Nayeon proudly.

Nayeon took the cup and looked at her for a second. She ran a hand through Chaeyoung’s hair and let out a sigh. "You're adorable." She said before putting the cup down on the counter and opening it. "Do you want ice in it?"

"Only one." Chaeyoung replied.

"I know, I know." Nayeon smiled and grabbed a single ice cube from the freezer. "You don't like it freezing." She said, dropping it into the cup and filling it up with the juice. She put the lid back on and gave it back to her little. "Do you want a snack, or do you just want to go upstairs?"

Chaeyoung stood there for a minute, contemplating her options. She looked around the kitchen and saw absolutely nothing she wanted. "Upstairs."

Nayeon nodded and took her hand, leading her back upstairs and completely ignoring Mina. "Do you want to watch a show?" She asked Chaeyoung as they got in their room.

"Can we watch Peter Rabbit?" Chaeyoung asked.

"Of course we can, princess. Do you know where your bunny stuffy went?" Nayeon knew Chaeyoung wouldn't watch Peter Rabbit without her bunny. It was forbidden.

Chaeyoung reached behind her pillow and pulled it out, hugging it immediately. "Here!"

Nayeon smiled softly as she sat down next to her. She grabbed the remote and turned the TV on. "Any specific episode, or do you want any?"

"Dunno." Chaeyoung replied, snuggling into Nayeon’s side.

After putting on a episode, Nayeon put the remote down and threw the blanket over her and Chaeyoung. She wrapped her arm around the blonde and looked down at her. "Are you okay now, sweetheart?"

"Yeah." Chaeyoung looked up at her and smiled.

Nayeon kissed her forehead and began to rub her back. "Good."

The rest of the night was okay. Chaeyoung had fallen asleep fairly quickly, leaving Nayeon to figure out what to do with herself. After a long time debating, she settled on staying right there and watching a show that she liked.
