Finally taking the initiative to schedule rest periods for himself, the local tavern was a decent place to end the night on. Luckily the place wasn’t too crowded with patrons. Several soldiers were there on their night off, laughing and drinking the night away with one another. Sitting in a far corner away from most of the festivities, Zhou Tai placed down a third chalice after downing it rather quickly. Taking the bottle, he slid it across to one of his fellow generals, Kong Tut

All wine was already paid for, the night was rather young. Perhaps it was time for a drinking game or perhaps some deep conversations to catch up. “It’s been too long my friend..hopefully we can have more nights like this now that I’m actually planning to take more time for myself..

     “So you’re saying our Lord was on the front lines, and Zhou Tai wasn’t with him? That wasn’t part of the plan.”

    Ling Tong fusses with the bandages, asking Lu Xun if they’re too tight. They’re not.

    “Yes… I wanted to ask, but I barely managed to shield him from the enemy’s attack. It is only a flesh wound, but…”

    “’It could’ve been worse?’ Yeah yeah, I’ve heard it before. You’re pretty bony though, you gotta be careful,” he sighs, gently placing the last of the bandages across Xun’s shoulder. He isn’t a child, though he technically is. Still, it’s no excuse to chide him like everyone else likely does. It reminds him of his days as a youth leading armies. Only now, Lu Xun can rely on someone to help dress his wounds.

    Xun acknowledges his words with a wave of a hand and little else. Other thoughts probably trouble him; thoughts always trouble him.

    “If I recall, I noticed a glimpse of hatred in his eyes. It was unlike his usual self - perhaps the stress of recent events burdens his mind?”

    “Wouldn’t surprise me. I swear I saw him sneaking away that other day - during a storm. Luckily, Lianshi went after him before I could. It was probably for the best - I’m not that great with comfort.”

    “Are you certain? I am feeling better now,” Xun shares the trademark smile that manages to calm him every time. “Well, I am thankful he is unharmed. I wonder how our Lord fares now… perhaps I should-”

    “Hey, you did your part,” he tries to reassure him, nudging Xun toward the bed’s backrest. Of course, he doesn’t budge. Gentle concern often overtakes his usual sarcasm around Lu Xun, as he couldn’t fool him. It was nice in a way, to express this side of himself without the other’s judgment.

    “You probably can tell, but I’m being serious. I’ll handle it for you - I mean, if he saw you take the hit, he’s blaming himself right now. And besides”- he nudges again, smiling when Xun finally settles against the bed-  “we can’t have our illustrious strategist off his game.” He makes his way toward the door when Xun speaks.

    “You will give a full report, yes?” Turning around, he hears the subtle tease in that ‘diplomatic’ voice. Lu Xun knows he doesn’t need to act formal just as he can quit with the sass. Heh, cheeky bastard. He liked that about him.

    “You have my word, Lord Strategist.”

❁* ░  Brushing away the thick branches, Macha made it through bushes, caressing a basket near her chest. A peculiar sight. Fine silk on someone who - for her behaviour - might as well fit into the depths of the jungle rather than in tearooms.

The freshest ingredients were the key for a successful spiced brew - while she was highly aware tidy looks were the way to gain respects among the people. Hopefully, one day get rid off the stigma of her upbringing - couldn’t have everything. Despite the attempts to go on her ways as early as possible, she could already spot someone nearby, perhaps witnessed her ram through the wild plant life. How embarrassing. At least she hoped he was one of the less strict types.

           ❝ Fine day... lord. ❞ She casually greeted, despite not knowing much about him or his ranks. Picking loose leaves off her hair few long strands escaped the large bun tied on top her head. A bow was delayed, but there. Important formalities the young adult still struggled to learn - but never neglecting for purpose. Seen the troops of former bandits and pirates, someone like her believed to fit in just well. ❝ ...Ever seen a maid gathering her own ingredients... I presume? ❞

Sun Ce tossed Kong Tut a dry cloth to clean off his knuckles. “I feel like this is a story I can tell my kids in the future! You know, Tales of Great Men of Wu.”

Sun Ce knew the other’s strength was admirable; Huang Gai talked about it all the time and how Kong Tut could bolster Wu’s forces--after some more polishing up, of course. However, it had been several years already and Sun Ce believed that Kong Tut was more than ready to do his part as an officer of Wu.
