Mayank Tiwari wrote : One of the destination of holy chardham this temple is 5 story long and is supported by 72 pillars. Complete structure is made of limestone and considered to built in 15th century but archeologists suggest that remains of the temple are more than 2000 years old.

This temple is situated next to Gomti river and just 14 feet above sea level. There are two entrances to the temple. The main entrance (north entrance) is called "Moksha Dwara" (Door to Salvation). This entrance takes one to the main market. The south entrance is called "Swarga Dwara" (Gate to Heaven).

There are several interesting stories about this temple. The original temple was built by the Grand son of lord Krishna and destroyed by Mughals.

Meera, staunch devotee of lord Krishna merged with the diety here. Adi Shankaracharya established it as one of the peeth(religious center).

Also, another interesting fact, The Krishnajanmastami festival,or Gokulashtami, the birthday of Krishna was commissioned by Vallaba, a telugu poet who founded krishna centric Vaishnavism in Brij.
