When you wake to any empty bed in the morning a sense of dread rushes through you. You didn’t remember Aaron waking you up to say he was called in but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. There are a few things that keep you from truly committing to whatever it is the two of you are doing: your doubts of being enough, the looming possibility of his ex wife, and his job. The latter is the easiest, really not a problem and more of an adjustment but those first two you aren’t sure you’ll ever shake.

But how could you not try when you get to have him finally?

You hear a cabinet door and know that you aren’t alone in his apartment. It feels weird to be in the city, you’re rarely here but for him you’ll make the drive any time of any day. You still only come when Jack is away, unsure if you’re really ready to make that connection. Jack getting attached to you and vice versa wouldn’t be good, especially if this eventually ends.

“I know that face.”

You jump out of your skin at the sound of his voice. You’d thought you were alone. “Fucking Christ, Aaron.”

“Sorry, I thought you heard me.” He’s biting away his grin as he leans against the doorframe with a mug filled with coffee.

“Totally forgivable if that coffee’s for me.”

“Only once you tell me what you were thinking about.”

You groan in frustration, laying back on the bed. “I was thinking about how I’m not ready to meet Jack,” You say hesitantly.

You hear rather than see him walk into the room and set down the mug. The bed sinks beside you, and his hand comes to cup your cheek, “Does it seem like I’ve been rushing you?”

“No, no, Aaron, you’ve been patient with me. I just have some reservations still.”

A frown paints his features, eyebrows pulling together, “What can I do to make it clear that I love you?”

“I didn’t say it wasn’t clear.”

He gives you a sympathetic smile, “Honey, you didn’t have to.”

Guilt. It starts in your toes, creeps up through every single one of your muscles until it’s anchored in your stomach. Openly doubting the man you love makes you feel icky, “I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t make this easy on us, I’m aware of that. But we’re here now and I’ll do whatever it takes,” He says matter of factly.

There’s something strangely romantic about him talking about your relationship as if it’s one of the budgeting reports he works on. But it means that he’s serious, dedicated, and committed to doing what needs to be done. It makes you feel a little more at ease.

“It’s all in my head I suppose.”

“What is? Talk to me.”

You look up past him at the ceiling as you speak, “I just want to be enough for you. I don’t want you to look anywhere else…at anyone else. In familiar places and not.”

He turns your head, makes you look him in the eyes while he says his next words, “You’re everything to me. I couldn’t imagine my life without you anymore. I’ve lived it, and while a lot of what I had was right, just as much was wrong because you weren’t in it. I’ll tell you that, every day for the rest of our lives if I have to.”

You kiss him then in an attempt to say everything you’re feeling. He kisses you back eagerly, his fingertips calloused against the skin of your soft cheeks. Your tongue explores his mouth on a path you’ve memorized, shivering at the taste. Once your lungs scream for air you pull away, keeping your mouth rested on his.

“Even when I’m old and wrinkly and have to eat mush again because I lose all my teeth?” You murmur against his lips.

He raises an eyebrow at you, “That’s a little dramatic, don’t you think?”

“You like me dramatic.”

“I love you dramatic,” He captures your mouth with his once more, swallowing the giggle that bubbles from your throat. His eyes are warm, glowing when he pulls away. “Feel better?”

You nod, a smile tugging at your lips, “A bit, yeah.”

“Bit by bit, I’ll convince you. Every single day.”

“I can’t wait.”

Aaron’s on the plane to some small town in South Dakota, trying to look over some reports but he can only think about you. Rossi has noticed him glance out the window a total of 6 times over the last hour and plops down in the seat across from him, pushing a cup of coffee across the table.

“You seem…distracted,” He comments, voice monotone.

“I’m not,” Aaron replies quickly, taking a sip of the coffee and muttering a thanks.

“You’ve seemed distracted since we came back from vacation.”

“Have I? I didn’t notice,” Aaron keeps his expression neutral, taking short drinks of coffee as he looks back down at the file.

“Anything new to report?”

“Dave.”

“You only say ‘Dave’ when you’re avoiding,” Rossi says knowingly.

With a reluctant sign, Aaron looks up at him, “I may have…reconnected with someone.”

“The girl from the library?”

“The girl from the library.”

“She took you back,” Rossi says with a smile and a twinkle in his eye.

“We weren’t…we never were together then, I was with Haley. The reason we stopped talking,” He cuts himself off, shaking his head. “We don’t need to get into it.”

Rossi nods, not pushing for information knowing Aaron will share when he’s ready, “Does she love you too?”

“By some miracle.”

“You deserve to be happy Aaron. I’m glad that you two made it back to each other.”

“Yes, I am too. Thank you, Dave.”

“I told you he got some. Pay up,” Morgan says from behind them, sticking his hand out at Spencer.

“It was completely reasonable for me to deduce that his mood had improved because he was over the first stage of grieving his marriage. According to research,” Spencer’s ready to spew a perfectly sound statistic but is interrupted.

JJ puts her hand up to stop him, “Spence, just open your wallet.”

Aaron frowns, turns around to look at his team who all have sheepish looks on their faces, “You all we’re betting…on my love life?”

“And we’re happy for you sir,” Penelope’s smile is infectious, and though he’s a little annoyed he can’t help but smile back.

“I, for one, am a little unhappy because I’m out of 50 bucks,” Emily had sided with Spencer, putting faith in his knowledge.

Aaron rolls his eyes at all of them before looking over at Blake, “Blake?”

She grins but puts her hands up in surrender, “Oh, I stayed out of it. It’s none of my business.”

“Thank you.”

“But I am happy for you, Hotch.”

Aaron gives her a warm smile and nod, before turning back to the rest of the team. “The rest of you need to take a page out of Blake’s book. Evidence, read, now.”

There’s a series of grumbles and complaints, exchanges of money, and then they’re all neck deep in figuring out victimology and m.o. Aaron’s still distracted, thinking about how you’ll react to hearing about his team placing bets on your existence. He can’t wait.

When he asks you to stand next to him at his wedding as his best person, there isn’t a universe where you can say no. Funnily enough, it’s almost 5 years to the day that’s become the most dreaded of your life. The day you realized how deeply you felt for him. It isn't on purpose but when that day rolls around it's a known bad day, like an omen. He’d asked you just a few hours after he asked Haley to marry him on a whim. Your entire world had been tilted since you’d fallen in love with him but now it's turned upside down.

You get to wear a special dress. Haley helps you pick it, she has an impeccable taste that you trust. It's gorgeous, classic with a little bit of sparkle. For just a moment as you get dressed in it on the big day, you wonder how he’ll feel about seeing you in it. Usually, you don't let yourself fall into daydreaming about how things could be, it helps keep your feelings locked up. They’re almost a completely separate entity at this point.

They don’t feel like that when you walk down the aisle, gripping the bouquet of roses, eucalyptus, and baby’s breath tight. He looks as handsome as ever and young, looking like a love sprung, recent college graduate that he is.

When you join him up at the altar he turns to you, grasping your hand, “Thank you for being here with me.”

“Of course, you know I wouldn’t miss it.”

If you were in your right mind, your knees would buckle as you watch her walk down the aisle. But, you’ve prepared yourself for this day. Coached and coached and coached yourself into the delusion that you can handle this. You can watch him tie himself to her in this way, pledge himself to her, and whatever family they’ll build together. You can and you do.

He pulls you onto the dance floor later that night and you can’t help but smile at how happy he is. If either of you is being honest, he rarely lets himself be truly happy. But as the two of you glide around the dance floor you don't see any hints of his perpetual sadness in his deep brown eyes. When you ask him about it he says he can't feel it either.

That makes it all worth it to you. You know better than anyone else what his past holds and how it’s kept him from believing in himself and his deserved happiness. You can’t think of a better reason to resign to your fate and you start to scour the crowd for the guy Haley talks about setting you up with.

Once you’re home at an indecent hour, you peel yourself out of the dress and put it in a box you label goodwill. You never want to see it again.

The realization comes 6 months after the day you’d met him. The two of you are sitting in the bed of his ratty pickup truck sharing a massive bag of french fries at the local fair. He’s got a black eye from the lacrosse game he played yesterday and his hair is blowing in the light spring breeze, some of it sticking to his sweaty brow.

It comes as an effortless thought. The two of you are people watching, just making up stories about whoever walks by and he says something ridiculous. It sends you into a belly laugh, one you know that'll make you sore the next day. The thought runs through your mind as easily as your laugh floats through the air.

God, I love him.

It's sobering but you put on a good face because he wraps his arm around your shoulder, whispers something heinous about a group of guys that's just walked past and you know if you don't laugh he’ll know something’s up.

Later that night as he walks you up the stairs to your front door he sighs like something’s on his mind. You turn to look at him, asking him what’s wrong.

He shifts from foot to foot, “I think I’m in love with Haley.”

The smile you paint on your face is the opposite of the darkness you feel swirling in your chest, “You should tell her.”

“Really?”

“She’ll love you back, you're you.”

“I don't know about that,” His hand runs over his face before pushing through his hair nervously. He always has a knack for doubting his self-worth. You've been trying to help with that.

“Well, I do. Tell her,” You urge. How you wish that you could have the opportunity to tell him how you feel.

Abruptly, he scoops you into a hug so tight you feel as if you’re collapsing in on yourself. You return it though, your hold on him just as tight as you memorize the way it feels to be in his arms like this.

“I’m so glad we met,” He whispers into your ear, voice sincere.

“Me too, Aaron.”

And while you mean it, it doesn’t dull the ache that finds its permanent home in you.
