Inspired by @ofmdtereomaori, I'm going to share some kupu whakarite! The Dragon Prince is one of my fave shows ever, and so here is dear precious Zym with the first. <3
Kia kaha te reo Māori!

Two kupu whakarite (metaphors) about Lucius and his hands.
There's also a whakatauki "Moea he tangata ringa raupa" (marry a person with calloused hands) about how hard workers are the best partners, but I'm pretty sure this doesn't apply to anyone on the show.
I got both of these from Hona Black’s He Iti Te Kupu: Māori Metaphors and Similes, available here.

I wondered for ages whether it would work to call the Kraken a taniwha. While taniwha can be sea monsters, they can also be guardian spirits (I think a bit like Chinese dragons). But this kupu whakarite (metaphor) definitely works for Ed's s1 ep10 transformation into the Kraken.
There's a good intro to what taniwha are about here: https://teara.govt.nz/en/taniwha

Nau mai, hoki mai ki te Wiki o Te Reo Māori! Welcome back to Māori Language Week! This year I will be using Our Flag Means Death screenshots to illustrate kupu whakarite (metaphors), kīwaha (idioms) and the occasional whakataukī (proverb).
I got most of them from Hona Black's excellent book He Iti Te Kupu: Māori Metaphors and Similes, available here in physical and electronic form.
Shout out to ngā taurapa o ngā waka kātoa - all the people working out of the spotlight to support others. And shout out to everyone who's supported this mahi since I started on Twitter a year ago. :)

I also thought about using "he ika haehae kupenga" - a net-tearing fish, meaning "a troublemaker, one who whines, talks behind people's backs and is belligerent" (Hona Black, from He Iti Te Kupu). But from the fish's point of view, they should be tearing the net and escaping. A lot of the characters in OFMD tear their nets, and that's a good thing.

Probably a kīwaha (idiom) rather than a kupu whakarite (metaphor) since no-one seems to know the exact literal meaning. But probably something to do with a crack in the earth.
(Hokoa te pukapuka He Iti Te Kupu, nā Hona Black, kei kōnei)
