September 14 - 20 - Paris
At Avignon we left Backroads and took the TGV Train to Paris with our arrival in the late afternoon. Francine’s cousin, Jean-Paul, took us to our Paris apartment on the 10 Rue Boutarel on the Ile Saint Louis. A charming second floor nicely restored apartment with modern appliances and other amenities. From the apartment it was an easy walk to the Right or Left Banks. We spent the next five days enjoying the city, visiting with Jean-Paul and his family, Nicole, Antoine and Aurore and spending time with our friends Steve and Nancy Farrow, who coincidently were in Paris for 2 weeks. We had our first dinner in Paris with Jean-Paul and Nicole at a nice Italian restaurant.
The first day, Saturday, we met with the Farrows and had breakfast near our apartment and then walked the Marais to Moulin De Rosa, a delicious patisserie, and then to a small department store called Merci with unique contemporary items. We stopped at Empreintes, a a French craftspeople sponsored store with quality functional craft. We then walked to a knitting store in the Passage du Grand Cerf. We stopped for coffee before walking and visiting Atelier Galerie Collection du France, a fine craft gallery, non-functional work, also supported by craftspeople. We walked throughout the Marais and other shops and Francine purchased a pair of glasses. We had an early dinner at a cafe, a fun day for all.
On day two, Sunday, we walked from our apartment to meet Jean-Paul at the Canal St. Martin for a late morning walk in another area of Paris and then lunch at comfortable and well designed cafe. Nicole joined us for lunch. After lunch we said goodbye and we walked back to the Marais area and did more walking and visits some shops. We then went back to the apartment and walked to Jean-Paul and Nicole’s flat, a 3.7 mile walk, for dinner and Antoine joined us.
On Monday, we took the subway to the Bon Marche where we met the Farrows. We explored the store and then took the Metro to Printemps for a look at Paris from the roof and then lunch at a cafe in the department store. After lunch we all took the Metro to the Louis Vuitton Foundation and explored the building and museum. We then took the Metro close to our respective hotels. We said goodbye and we enjoyed our walk back to the apartment. We bought fruit and left-overs for dinner.
On Tuesday, we had breakfast at the apartment and then walked to Atelier Galerie Collection to purchase a ceramic piece. We then walked to a fabric store and to Objet Rare, an art jewelry store (opens at 2:00 p.m.). We took the long walk back to our apartment. We changed and started our walk to the restaurant Marco Polo, an Italian restaurant on the Left Bank, to meet Jean-Paul, Nicole and Aurore for dinner. On the way we went to a chocolate store, Kutjen sweater store and to Elsa Vanier, an art jewelry store. We had a nice dinner and conversation, it was a lovely evening.
On our last day, Wednesday, we again had breakfast in our apartment and went for coffee and then to the Pompidou museum, picked-up the ceramic art piece did a little more wandering and met Antoine for an early dinner at Les Philosphies. Of course another ice cream.
