'Tis that time of the year again: Halloween. It seems only fitting to bust out some scary records during this season. Of course, you got your Black Sabbaths and Dopethrones, and whilst these records are timelessly scary, I want to highlight some less obvious candidates.

Acid Witch -- 'Stoned' (2010 - Hells Headbangers Records)

Stoned by ACID WITCH

ACID WITCH may be the least "serious" band on this list, but if you don’t mind gorging on the cheese, there is much to appreciate here and omitting Acid Witch from this list would honestly be a crime akin to the Wicker Man remake.   Stoned may not have The Bees! but it is a true trick or treat bag of cheesy synths, B-horror movie samples, and the crispest riffs you could imagine.   Acid Witch is one of those cases where if you hate the band there’s a good chance you hate fun.   At very least, you must admire a song name like "Metal Movie Marijuana Massacre Meltdown."   I doubt Halloween ever end for these guys.

Mizmor -- 'Yodh' (2016 - Gilead Media)

After being confronted with the stunning cover art of YODH, courtesy of the late, great Zdzisław Beksiński, I certainly do not have to tell you that we tread into dark territories here.   The music reveals itself to be at least on par with the artwork, a lumbering behemoth of blackened doom, crowned by solitary member A.L.N.'s unique and varied vocal approach with those terrifying high-pitched shrieks interspersed.   However, what really makes Yodh so scary is how relatable it is.   Whereas many albums on this list deal with themes abstract and distant from everyday life, Mizmor is very human and down to the ground.   It will drag you along, whether you like it or not.   The origins of Mizmor are that of a deeply religious man losing his faith (as he so strikingly puts it: “The best friend I came to love dearly turned to ash in my arms.”).   Struggling to come to terms with his loss, his life depends increasingly upon using music as a vessel for his grief and anger.   Mizmor’s music is brutally honest; a master lesson in catharsis.

Khanate -- 'Khanate' (2001 - Southern Lord Recordings)

In 2001, KHANATE released the ultimate tribute to lunacy in the form of their eponymous debut record.   This thing goes the extra distance to traumatize you.   From the earsplitting solid minute of feedback that opens the record, you already know you will be in for a very unpleasant hour.   The instrumental part of this slab of drone certainly isn’t a slouch -- sounds like Burning Witch on a particularly bad day -- but the vokill (as it reads in the liner notes) performance of Alan Dubin really takes the cake, with his insane ramblings, whispering, screeching, and shrieking about saws, stripping bones, and wearing human skin like a coat.   He sounds like strung out Gollum reading some disjointed manifesto carved into the wall of a psychiatric ward with bare hands.   If that doesn’t have you chewing your fingernails off, then I don’t know what will.

Primitive Man -- 'Scorn' (2013 - Relapse Records)

In many ways, PRIMITIVE MAN and Khanate seem to be similar, despite their differences in sound.   Both aim to showcase just how fucked up humanity really is and whereas Khanate draws from insanity, Primitive Man does so from hatred on their aptly named first record and death-doom masterpiece, Scorn.   Unlike Dubin’s vocals, which are often very human (even if they are at times too close for comfort), Primitive Man's own Ethan Lee McCarthy goes for the polar opposite with his inhuman, bestial gutturals and bellows.   Truth be told, the only entrance to hell known to mankind must be located in McCarthy’s throat.   The intensity of the record is only amplified by Primitive Man’s penchant for really fucking unsettling noise-interludes, like "Black Smoke" (which I swear samples somebody beating off).   Scary shit, kids.

Sunn O))) -- 'Black One' (2005 - Southern Lord Recordings)

“Cry yourself to ash.”   It’s hard to believe that a band like SUNN O))) would have something akin to quotable lyrics, but with "It Took The Night To Believe" from the album Black One, Sunn delivered what is to date their darkest outing.   Much of the tenacity of this record is owed to the pool of renowned black metal musicians that Sunn chose to collaborate with.   USBM mastermind, Wrest, made a guest appearance on the aforementioned song, which one online commenter aptly describe as sounding like a washing machine on heroin that was simultaneously on fire.   The gruesome closing track, "Bathory Erzsebet," features claustrophobic guest vocalist, Malefic of Xasthur, who was supposedly locked away in a coffin to record the vocals.   Considering how muffled and tortured he sounds, I’m buying it.

Ahab -- 'The Call of the Wretched Sea' (2006 - Napalm Records)

I think lists of essential funeral doom that don't include The Call of the Wretched Sea must be few and far between.   I can vividly recall my first time listening to this monster of a record by AHAB and many times later (including having the privilege to see Ahab perform it live earlier this year) it still flattens me as if a whale decided to do a belly flop on top of me.   They really earned themselves the genre tag of nautical funeral doom, as the true star of this record is the oppressive, crushing atmosphere that Ahab creates.   It truly feels like being trapped in a shipwreck at the bottom of sea, with oxygen slowly running out.   Daniel Droste’s ocean-deep gutturals beckon the arrival of some unknown monster of the deep sea, hell-bent on devouring you.

The Body -- 'I Shall Die Here' (2014 - RVNG)

I Shall Die Here by The Body

THE BODY from Portland, Oregon is certainly not short on uneasy music, like the schizophrenic "Empty Hearth" off their debut record or last year's self-proclaimed Grossest Pop Record of All Time, 'No One Deserves Happiness' (2016).   But no other record embraces sheer terror like their collaboration with experimental electronic musician The Haxan Cloak, aptly titled I Shall Die Here.   The minimalistic arrangements with sparse riffs, thunderous drums, noise, primal electronic beats, not to mention Chip King's piercing screams, feel far removed from other kinds of music -- like a hostile, alien landscape with the only exit being the end of the record.

Dragged Into Sunlight -- 'Hatred For Mankind' (2011 - Mordgrimm)

Hatred For Mankind by Dragged Into Sunlight

Last, but not least, on my Doomed Halloween list is the seminal Hatred For Mankind by Liverpool's DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT.   Of course, first one must admit that Hatred for Mankind is not a doom metal record, stemming primarily from a particularly rotten strain of blackened death metal, with only the occasional pinch of doom (such as in the album highlight, "Lashed to the Grinder and Stoned to Death").   This record is just so ferociously evil it even claws its way into lists it doesn’t quite fit in.   Hatred For Mankind is unrelenting, vicious, raw, and intense, topped off with a batshit insane vocal delivery that searches its equal.   The mere implication of there being a musical apex predator such as Hatred for Mankind is terrifying.   In many ways, it still remains the definitive extreme metal record, 8 years after the original release.   This is The Album that should not be.

U.S. ITC details why it rejected CSeries duties, says Boeing not hurt

MONTREAL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – An independent U.S. trade body on Wednesday said it rejected hefty U.S. duties on Bombardier’s CSeries jets partly because Boeing lost no sales or revenue when Delta Air Lines ordered the aircraft in 2016 from the Canadian planemaker.

The International Trade Commission published its reasoning three weeks after announcing the decision.

The ITC said the 110-seat CSeries jets ordered by Delta (DAL.N) and Boeing Co’s (BA.N) smallest 737 MAX 7 plane do not compete. It also said Bombardier Inc’s (BBDb.TO) CSeries sale to Delta did not come at Boeing’s expense as the planemaker did not offer any new aircraft to the No. 2 U.S. carrier.

“Boeing lost no sales or revenues,” the ITC said in its 194-page ruling.

“The higher standard seating capacity of the 737-700 and 737 MAX 7 limits competition between those models and the CS100 for some purchasers,” it said.

It was not yet clear whether Boeing will seek to appeal the ITC’s decision, a move that could generate uncertainty at a time when the U.S. planemaker’s European rival Airbus SE (AIR.PA) plans to take a majority stake in the CSeries program.

The ITC determined on Jan. 26 in a 4-0 vote that the CSeries did not harm Boeing and discarded a U.S. Commerce Department recommendation to slap a near 300 percent duty on sales of Bombardier 110-to-130-seat CSeries jets for five years.

Spokesmen for both Boeing and Bombardier said the companies are studying the ITC’s decision and did not have an immediate comment.

Former ITC chairman Dan Pearson said the cost to appeal the decision would be marginal compared with what Boeing has already spent.

“Boeing has put a whole lot of money into law firms for this case. They’ve got millions of dollars invested,” Pearson said by phone.

Boeing has the option of appealing the decision at the Court of International Trade in New York, or a trade dispute settlement panel under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

However, in negotiations to modernize NAFTA, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has pushed to scrap NAFTA’s process to settle trade disputes, which he says is biased against the United States.

Pearson said he believed the commission’s decision will likely improve U.S.-Canadian trade relations, which have been complicated by disputes over tariffs on Canadian lumber and U.S. milk and President Donald Trump’s desire to renegotiate or even abandon NAFTA.

“It does help the bilateral relationship between Canada and the United States, and I hope both sides see it this way.”

In its complaint, Boeing had alleged it was forced to discount its 737 narrow-bodies to compete with Bombardier, which it said used government subsidies to dump the CSeries during the 2016 sale.

But the ITC said the CSeries is not likely to depress prices of U.S.-made jets and that Bombardier is unlikely to offer other prospective buyers the same discounts provided to Delta.

Quicken Loans, the holder of the No.1 customer satisfaction rating by J.D. Power for seven years, has received a blow to their image in the form an $11 million fine for influencing appraisals to encourage loan approvals. The tampering dates back to the boom years prior to 2008, when the mortgage company furnished appraisers in West Virginia with “estimated” home values, needed to secure a loan approvals, which ultimately left the owners under water, a federal prosecutor said. [TRD]

Lack of lumber causes homebuilder confidence to dip to an eight-month low

Rising material costs, particularly lumber, has the homebuilding industry concerned. Builder confidence has hit an eight-month low, according to a poll by the National Association of Home Builders and Wells Fargo. Housing demand is still strong, but builders feel pressure to absorb the increase in costs in order to offer competitively priced homes, the poll found. NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald told Bloomberg that rising prices of building materials “is hurting housing affordability even as consumer interest in the new-home market remains strong.” [TRD]

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK Boeing Co on Thursday asked the U.S. Commerce Department to investigate alleged subsidies and unfair pricing for Canadian planemaker Bombardier’s new CSeries airplane, adding to growing trade tensions between the United States and Canada.

The petition against Canada’s new competitor to the Boeing 737 aircraft came just days after the Commerce Department imposed duties averaging 20 percent on imports of Canadian softwood lumber, saying that the product’s origin from public land amounted to an unfair government subsidy.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto that he intended to begin renegotiating the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, after White House officials said Trump had been considering an order to withdraw from the pact.

Boeing said in its petition that Bombardier, determined to win a key order from Delta Air Lines Inc after losing a competition at United Airlines, had offered its planes to the airline at an “absurdly low” $19.6 million each, well below what it described as the aircraft’s production cost of $33.2 million.

“Propelled by massive, supply creating and illegal government subsidies, Bombardier Inc has embarked on an aggressive campaign to dump its CSeries aircraft in the United States,” Boeing said in its petition.

Boeing’s similarly sized 737-700 model has a list price of $83.4 million, with the new 737-MAX 7 priced at $92.2 million. Sales discounts from list prices are typically 40 percent to 50 percent in the industry.

In April 2016, Bombardier won the Delta order, its biggest yet, for 75 CS100 jets, worth an estimated $5.6 billion based on the list price of about $71.8 million.

In its complaint against Bombardier, Boeing argued that the CSeries program would not exist without hundreds of millions of dollars in launch aid from the governments of Canada, Quebec and Britain, or a $2.5 billion equity infusion from Quebec and its largest pension fund in 2015.

Quebec Economy Minister Dominique Anglade said in a statement that her government would defend “the commercial partnership concluded with Bombardier” for a $1 billion injection in the CSeries.

Boeing also took a shot at European rival Airbus SE, which it accuses of benefiting from similar “unfair” government subsidies in a long-running dispute before the World Trade Organization.

Bombardier is “taking a page out of the Airbus strategy book” by trying to muscle into the U.S. market with cut-rate pricing, Boeing charged.

A Commerce Department spokesman said the petition would be given “a thorough review” and further comment was premature.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has taken action in recent weeks to protect the U.S. steel and aluminum industries from foreign competition, launching national security investigations that could lead to import restrictions.

An investigation could lead to duties on the Bombardier aircraft to offset any below-cost pricing or any subsidies deemed unfair.

In a statement, Canada’s government objected to Boeing’s allegations and noted that the CSeries has many U.S. suppliers, including for engines, and supports thousands of U.S. jobs.

“The Government of Canada will mount a vigorous defense against these allegations and stand up for aerospace jobs on both sides of the border,” it said in the statement.

Bombardier’s chief executive conceded the company had been “aggressive” on pricing in order to win, and sources familiar with the deal pegged the discount closer to two-thirds off the nominal list price.

Bombardier said in a statement that it was reviewing the petition and said it structures its dealings to ensure compliance with all relevant laws.

The request for anti-dumping measures was also addressed to the U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent U.S. trade body that will review any decisions by the Commerce Department.
