10 Best Romantic Restaurants in Hong Kong
New Post has been published on https://www.travelonlinetips.com/10-best-romantic-restaurants-in-hong-kong/
10 Best Romantic Restaurants in Hong Kong
Tumblr media
Hong Kong has a reputation for non-stop work, with breakfast snatched on the way to the office, lunch eaten at your desk, and dinner little more than a takeaway at the end of the day. So are there really any openings for a romantic dinner? The answer has to be a resounding yes.
First off is the city’s stunning location – set around Victoria Harbour, with skyscrapers towering on every side. Second is Hong Kong’s affection for not just Chinese food, but for cuisines from all around the world, to say nothing of a penchant for gourmet. And fine wines fill Hong Kong’s restaurant cellars.
So the end result is scores of romantic dining venues, which are all the more popular as Hong Kongers need a break from their hectic schedules from time to time. Many of the most romantic restaurants are in the city’s hotels, with Gaddi’s being a prime example. This is gourmet dining for the upper crust, totally formal and utterly memorable. For a little more informality, hit any of the four branches of Frites — fun food and fun times. And if it’s celebrity chefs you’re after, look no further than Nobu, possibly one of the most famous romantic dining names on the planet.

Hutong’s stunning space is a clever play of faux rustic decor against the backdrop of uber-modern Hong Kong seen from floor to ceiling windows. Much of the food, traditional northern Chinese with a modern bent, may not appeal to meat-and-potatoes types. That said, there are still a few dishes that even the most Western of palates will appreciate, such as crispy de-boned lamb ribs, wok-fried beef tenderloin with scallions and pan-fried sole. Otherwise, expect to find unusual but wonderful dishes such as shark’s lips marinated with ginger and black fungi, stewed fish head, sea cucumber salad or poached frog legs with sponge cucumber. MTR: Tsim Sha Tsui.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Hutong’s romantically inspired menu is just perfect for couples on a special date.
Ed’s expert tip: Book a private room if you want some extra exclusivity.

The Peninsula, aka The Pen, is the oldest hotel in Hong Kong. There may be newer, bigger, more spiffy hotels in the city, but this is the most venerable, and The Verandah is one of its principal restaurants and quite the most gracious place to dine intimately in Hong Kong. The buffet is like one vast path to temptation while the kitchen will cook anything that takes your fancy, from steak to fish and beyond. The staff are a delight, past masters at looking after their guests and getting their evening off to a grand start. Beautiful decor sets the seal on a great venue.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: The Verandah is stylish, airy and fun; what more could anyone want on a romantic date?
Ed’s expert tip: You’ll enjoy your meal more if you are smartly dressed, like all the other diners.

Look out over the harbor for some truly inspirational romantic dining. This 56th-floor restaurant is, perhaps, one of the true gems of the Hong Kong dining scene. The view of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour from some of tables here is breath-taking, and often is complemented by live piano music in the background. The cuisine is contemporary French; the foie gras is a favorite. A lunch menu offers two- and three-course meals, while dinner is served; la carte, with an eight-course tasting meal available. The chef at Petrus uses only the freshest available meat and produce. Reservations are essential. MTR: Admiralty
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Petrus doesn’t just deliver the goods, but does so with a delicious panache.
Ed’s expert tip: Leave room for the goat cheese, which is quite stupendous.

Internationally known chef Nobu Matsuhisa has acclaimed restaurants in world-class cities such as New York City, London, Las Vegas, Miami, Dallas, Milan and Tokyo. Add Hong Kong to the list! Opened at the end of 2006, this outpost is every bit as elegant, sleek and wonderful as its brothers and sisters, and the food is just as fabulous. Sushi and sashimi make up most of the menu, but there are several additional options as well, including steaks, tempura and a host of cooked Japanese dishes. Not to be missed! The restaurant’s location overlooking the harbor must make it one of the most amazing Nobus around the world.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This restaurant is right next to the harbor, so the marine panoramas are unrivaled.
Ed’s expert tip: Book your table before you arrive in the city: it’s that popular.

French food is a natural choice for romantic diners, and there are few more opulent restaurants than this one. The well-regarded Caprice is lovely, with tastefully opulent decor and a wonderful view over Victoria Harbour. Chef Vincent Thierry’s forte is contemporary French cuisine and he imports a plethora of special ingredients to accomplish the best flavors and textures. The menu changes frequently, but expect to find dishes such as Artichoke Cappuccino with Black Truffle, Pan-Sauted Veal Chop with Green Asparagus and Jus of Black Truffle, and Roast Chicken with Fondant Potatoes. If you’re feeling decadent, splurge on the degustation menu. Impressive wine list.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This is not just really superb dining, but value for money too.
Ed’s expert tip: Ask the sommelier to guide you through the extensive wine list.

Lively Belgian beer house Frites brings a taste of Europe to Hong Kong. On entering the bistro, customers see an authentic Belgian-style bar, stocked with four genuine Belgian beers on tap and many more available by the bottle. The menu contains traditional and unique Belgian fare, including mussels in Hoegaarden beer sauce, pork knuckle. and Stella Artois battered fish and chips. At this buzzing authentic Belgian bistro customers can’t help but feel part of the energy and excitement, even before your first beer of many is served. Three other branches of Frites do a roaring trade in Wanchai, Causeway Bay and Central.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: There’s a very lively air to Frites, one that’s inspiring and romantic at the same time.
Ed’s expert tip: This works best as a venue for a romantic evening meal as lunchtimes are busy with executives from the surrounding offices.

One of the Peninsuala Hotel’s many stars, Gaddi’s has been a fixture on the Hong Kong restaurant scene for more than 50 years, during which time it has enjoyed a fine reputation for terrific service, ambiance, and food. Expect to see an older, more established crowd here, enjoying a meal accompanied by light piano music in the background. Among its more popular dishes, the lobster bisque seems to rise above the rest, but the Scottish lamb is equally well prepared. Gaddi’s comes with a smart dress code, so it’s better to spruce up; reservations are highly recommended. MTR: Tsim Sha Tsui
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This is one of the oldest restaurants in Hong Kong and there’s good reason why it’s lasted so long.
Ed’s expert tip: As well as superb food, Gaddi’s also features a superlative wine list.

Take one of the world’s finest cuisines, combine it with one of the world’s most stunning metropolitan views, and the result is Pierre. Perched on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing Victoria Harbour, this restaurant is the personal handiwork of Pierre Gagnaire, a French gastronomic genius and recognized everywhere as a truly original and artistic chef. The dishes are both intricate and elaborate dishes, but always firmly rooted in the French cooking tradition. Chef Pierre makes regular visits here, and in his absence the kitchen is run by Jacky Tauvry, Chef de Cuisine at Pierre. There’s no better romantic dining venue.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Put simply, the grilled salmon is perhaps the best in Asia, let alone Hong Kong.
Tracy You’s expert tip: Pierre’s open for both lunch and dinner, but in the evening the top-floor setting is at its most magical.

Never mind that Brit celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is the man behind London House, it’s the celebrity food that’s got everyone talking. Or rather, it would have, if they weren’t so busy chewing. This is the place for Brit pub classics like fish and chips and bangers (as the English call sausages) and mash, as well as a stunning range of puddings. London House is spread over two levels, with an outdoor dining terrace and big screens for all the sports action however it’s the laid-back atmosphere that makes it such a good dining venue. The staff, informed and friendly, deserve a minor round of applause too.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This breezy, merry restaurant is relaxed enough to make it ideal for a first date. Or a second or third.
Ed’s expert tip: Bag a table with a view of the harbor on the outdoor terrace.

Hi! I am back home at last!  I spent some time in central Oregon with Joel visiting his parents, and it was beautiful and full of nature. Then we went to its polar opposite, Las Vegas, which was exciting and full of restaurants and flashy lights.  It will be hard to keep it to the usual five pictures this week since I had so many to choose from, but email can only handle so much, so choose I must. 1.  Crater Lake - Joel's parents took us to Crater Lake National Park. It's the deepest lake in the US, because rather than being a spot where a river got dammed up or something, it's in the place where a volcano blew the top of a mountain off, and so the bottom of it goes all the way down to the center of the Earth maybe?  Anyway, belatedly, I bought a stamp book, which is apparently something that people who visit national parks can do- go to the visitors center and get a passport-like stamp in a book that has spaces for all the national parks.  It's unfortunate that I didn't know about this until now, so I will have to go back to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone and Yosemite.  I mean, oh no.  But Crater Lake was beautiful, and the whole Oregon trip was blessed with daytime highs in the 70s and fresh alpine air.  It was amazing.
Tumblr media
2.  Deschutes River - it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that 'Deschutes' is a contraction of 'Des Schutes' (and some of the county signs even had the spelled-out version) which is German for, surprise, "the chutes".  This river formed from a collapsed lava tube that came out of the side of the same mountain where Crater Lake is. We hiked down this river and saw a lot of black crumbled lava rocks too. It was a gorgeous river with lots of pretty waterfalls, and the water was really, really cold so no one was swimming in it.  And there was all the pine and aspen forest around it so it looked like there should be elves or fairies darting about.  Hiking there was not like hiking in Texas; the air is cool and dry and sweat actually works.  I would be tempted to move there except it's so far north and winter days are probably like four hours long, and that would make me too sad.  Maybe I can get a summer home there someday.
Tumblr media
3.  Starry night - I was hoping to see some meteors from the Perseid meteor shower and I did see several.  I got to test out the night photography capability of the phone and it continues to amaze me.  The community makes a point to point all the outside lights down so they don't wash out the sky, so the result is an exceptionally dark night sky; they even have an observatory there where I got to see galaxies and nebula through big telescopes, things I'd only seen before in photos. This picture was taken a little after midnight in the middle of the town's golf course, of all places, but that had the best views of the sky since they cleared the trees (MIXED FEELINGS!).  This shot is amazing and at the same time kind of awful because I tried to capture two things in one shot, when I should've just taken two different pictures.  The very bright thing on the left edge of the picture is Jupiter, and the smoky smudges going up the right side of the sky is the Milky Way galaxy.
Tumblr media
4.  Horned lizard - I'm sure you recognize this critter, so I could not resist having my picture taken in front of it when I saw it at the Las Vegas airport.  Like pretty much every American female, I have mixed feelings seeing photos of myself, especially full-body shots.  I've gained weight during the last year, which is frustrating because I've also upped my exercise quite a lot.  I'm eating like a king though, and I especially did on this trip, so here we are.  My cholesterol is low and my resting heart rate is around 65, so I'm clearly doing something right.  Well, I'm ready in case there's a famine at any rate.
Tumblr media
5.  Vegas view - Vegas was in many ways the opposite of rural Oregon- bright, noisy, smelly, and the opposite of peaceful.  But it has its own charms for sure.  This is the view from our room.  And we got it for pretty cheap, too! So there's a hotel on the strip called the MGM Grand- it has a gigantic gold lion in front of it and everything and has a billion rooms and dozens of restaurants.  Next to the hotel are these three high-rise towers called (snooty voice) the MGM Signature.  They are full of what are basically extended-stay hotel rooms with tiny little kitchens in them, and they are sold as apartments or condos.  Some folks bought a few of these and list the rooms on the Air B&B website, at a considerably cheaper rate than hotel rooms but just as nice- you just don't have someone making your bed for you every day.  But we got a great deal on this room on the 28th floor and it had this awesome view; it's a panorama shot from the balcony and you can see the Moon and Venus over the hotels on the middle-left.  On the right you can see a beige and gold looking high-rise- that's one of the other towers of (snooty voice) the MGM Signature.  Our tower looked exactly the same. There was no meteor watching to be had there; the room was lit up at night bright enough to read by unless you drew the curtains.  But this is part of Vegas' charm, right?  The towers were connected to the MGM Grand and all its shops and restaurants, and you could pretty much get to everything you needed without ever setting foot outside.  I called it 'the compound'.  :)

Day 13- 8/15/17
Got a slow start getting back to Zion this morning as the greater part of the morning was spent writing the last week’s blogs and organizing pictures for our most loyal followers (our Moms, Bridget B, and the Factset team). Made it to the Angel’s Landing trailhead just before noon. Made a couple friends from western New York before beginning the final half mile trek up the most technical part of the climb with one of them. The last portion of the hike traveled over narrows straits and steep climbs with cliff dropoffs of over 1,000’ feet on both side. We held on for dear life at points to a chain that was connected to heavy metal poles cemented into the rock. This portion, although slow-moving due to crowds, was absolutely worth it for the views with 360° panorama at the top. After eating lunch at top, we headed back down to canyon valley and took the shuttle back to the car. Hot, dried out, and slightly delirious we decided to jump in the Virgin River to cool down before leaving to Las Vegas.
All in all, Zion was our favorite portion of the trip so far because of the magnitude in the size of the mountains, their distinct features, and the seemingly endless number of them towering over a lush, green valley floor with the Virgin River flowing through it.
VEGAS! We fell asleep by 11:30. We arrived at 7 p.m. and checked into Caeser’s Palace.  After having been in national parks for the last 5 days it was quite the difference.  C & B were overwhelmed to say the least, to deal with this feeling we quickly took a tequila shot to feel more at ease from one of the 2 lobby bars.  We made it to our room and changed out of our hiking clothes and backpacks into fancy dinner attire.  We decided on TOA, an asian fusion restaurant in the Venetian hotel.  Walking along the strip to dinner we were able to see fountains, showgirls, and many Elvis impersonators.  After dinner we decided to do some hard core gambling because why not! It’s Vegas!  So we both put 5 dollars into the slot machines and ended up leaving with $0.29.  Probably won’t be gambling anytime soon.  After the exhausting gambling experience we decided to cut our losses and go to sleep.

Las Vegas - Things to do with kids - Part 1
Tumblr media
Attractions For Kids:
Kids on a family vacation are a lot like luggage (minus the whole stuffed into an overhead bin thing). They're dragged around from place to place with little say in the matter. But Vegas is never a drag. We have fun for everyone, even kids and families. You can hike together to the top of towering red sandstone rock formations or plunge down an 80 mph drop on a roller coaster. We also have museums, but not the boring kind. Plus, there's the stuff you wouldn't expect to find in the desert like dolphins, gondolas and, occasionally, even ... brace yourself ... snow. Did we mention the candy shops? More like mouthwatering monuments. Where else would you find an 800-pound chocolate replica of the Statue of Liberty? New York? Nope. Only in Vegas
Adventure Canyon
The crew at Buffalo Bill's has shown what a little ingenuity can do -- it turned a once boring ride into a novelty that may start showing up in theme parks across the country.
