Space is warped and Time is bendable, and sometimes things that should be gone for good do come back. Such is the case with Neltharion and Malygos, who find themselves back amongst the living, with a ton of memories not their own, lots of questions to answer and, naturally, a world to save.

Heroes and other Scoundrels is an AU exploring the idea of what could be if Malygos and Neltharion both would get a second chance. A fic especially for everyone who is disappointed with how canon lore handled these two. (and the lore in general)

It's also an E rated shipping fic, so expect some raunchy bits, quite a bit of swearing and crude humor.

Prologue Part I: A Song for the Living

Not too long after the destruction of Dalaran, in a dark and stormy night, Neltharion and Malygos find themselves back amongst the living. All due to a long forgotten, haphazardly thrown together spell Malygos had cast thousands of years ago to ward off the end of the world.

So it's up to these two now to go save the world. But they need to come to terms with each other first and make peace. And spill some well-kept secrets kept for far too long.

Prologue Part II: All Buskers, Rovers and Saints (E)

With the help of a strange tavernkeep Malygos and Neltharion manage to sort their thoughts, open up to one another, and finally make their way to Tanaris to talk to Nozdormu about everything. Because if they want to try and save the world, they certainly need one thing: More time.

Chapter 1: Hangman's Lullaby

Our dynamic duo is back in the past, meeting old friends and new enemies, and learn that the rabbit hole goes much deeper than anticipated. And as this is Azeroth, deep down below is where the Old Gods dwell.

Also the boys decided to buy a tavern.

Chapter 2: The More the Merrier

Neltharion makes his way to Stormwind to see about the tavern, naturally running into trouble along the way.

Back at the tavern the grafted timeways bring forth an unexpected visit.

Chapter 3: Where We Belong (E)

Having had to reveal himself to Onyxia, Neltharion fills his daughter in on what's going on, while Nozdormu has a heart to heart with Malygos.

Back in Stormwind a new foe enters the stage.

Chapter 4: Take Me Back Where I Belong

Neltharion returns from Stormwind and tell the others of his (mis)adventures. Likewise Malygos and Nozdormu share the news about what disaster nearly befell them.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Nefarian learns of the necromancers up north and his interest is piqued, while at the other end of the continent Kalecgos and a friend make a very strange discovery.

Chapter 5: Them Fallen

The recent discoveries of the various groups are investigated, drawing some unwanted attention.

Also Nefarian goes missing.

Chapter 6: Dragons do as Dragons do

While Malygos chases after Nefarian up north, he has first a run-in with a familiar face, and then one with a very familiar face: His own.

Meanwhile the same happens to Neltharion, with unexpected results.

Chapter 7: Once in a While

Revelations are being dealt with, but new questions rear their heads.

Pondering the Dracthyr, Neltharion, Nefarian, and dragonkin

Did Nefarian know about the dracthyr?  He was alive at the time of the Sundering, but had he ever been to the Dragon Isles?  As the heir of the Earth Warder I imagine he would have been there, even if it was a place that commoners didn’t frequent (and I get the impression it was a hub for all dragons, regardless of status.)

As I understand it, Neltharion created the dracthyr well before he became corrupted, so...how?  My headcanons about Nefarian have always been heavily influenced by the idea that his penchant for experimenting with weird creatures was frowned upon as not a fitting activity for a black dragon.  Life is the reds’ area of expertise, after all.  Yet here was Neltharion making half-dragon soldiers like it was no big deal.  Since when did the black flight have powers over flesh like that?  Or did he just design them and then give the schematics to Alexstrasza, who did the actual creation part?  Did he fashion them from stone and then let her bring them to life?

Was it common knowledge that Neltharion made the dracthyr, or was that a secret?  How long before the Sundering were they created?

Did Neltharion refuse to tell Nefarian how he made the dracthyr, not wanting his son to meddle in such things?  A “do as I say, not as I do” situation?

Maybe Nefarian knew about the dracthyr, and that’s where he got the idea of combining the five flights’ magic, but after the Isles were sealed away and his father went mad he was left trying to recreate the concept from scratch.

What’s the difference between the dracthyr and the dragonkin we’ve known since vanilla, i.e. the centaur-style ones and the really tall ones like Broodlord Lashlayer in BWL?  Were they created the same way?  By whom?  And then you have the “dragonman” model that was introduced in Cataclysm, e.g. Maloriak, which looks closer to a dracthyr but still different.  I’ve always wanted to know what the deal was with those dragon-like beings who weren’t true dragons, and the new guys just raised a zillion new questions.

Also, were any dracthyr ever allowed to leave the Dragon Isles?  I know Neltharion had the drogbar to serve him in Highmountain, but surely a squad of dracthyr would have been nice to have around, too.  Maybe they weren’t allowed to serve a single flight exclusively, and had to stay in the Isles where they could serve/protect all dragonkind together.

So let’s take a look at what exactly the original Gates of Ahn’Qiraj event meant for vanilla WoW, and what the upcoming AQ40 opening will likely mean for WoW Classic. While this was wildly ambitious, it didn’t quite work out as intended when all of the grinding and raiding and tension-building over the course of several weeks culminated in the actual opening of the Gates. Because it was a server-wide event involving both factions, it meant gathering the whole server’s population on Kalimdor (and especially max-level players) in Silithus. Again, the whole server’s population, concentrated on one continent, with no phasing or sharding or load balancing of any of the technologies developed since, meant that it was Lag City.

Everything that could go wrong did. Server crashes followed by long log-in queues, coupled with wildly buggy behavior from boats and graveyard spawns, all during an event with exclusive rewards that would expire within hours. If you’re wondering why Wrath of the Lich King and other subsequent expansions did their best to divide the starting areas between the two factions, the lessons of both the Gates event (and Burning Crusade’s Hellfire Peninsula, natch) are likely the major reasons why. Regardless, the end result was someone banged the gong and got a sweet, highly exclusive mount and title; two new raids (one a 20-player outdoor experience that took all the lessons of Zul’Gurub and applied them anew, and the other a deep 40-player dungeon crawl through a nightmarish hive of Old God goodness) were both there for the taking; and countless players, regardless of the technical difficulties, got to say “I was there when the gates were opened.”

It was a memorable event for a plethora of reasons, but at least a few of those reasons — i.e. the lag, the drama of who got the drops for assembling the Scepter, the sheer volume of raid drops needed — are likely why we haven’t seen anything similar in WoW since. While it’ll be difficult to tell before we see it happen, there’s a solid chance that the stability issues that plagued the original opening events won’t happen this time around. But aside from that, the competition between guilds, raid teams, and individuals to complete the quest chain before the gates open is likely to be intense.

The epic quest chain to reassemble the Scepter of the Shifting Sands starts with What Tomorrow Brings, which subsequently asks someone to collect the head of Broodlord Lashlayer in Blackwing Lair. The player who loots the head (and yeah, he only has one), goes on to grind out Brood of Nozdormu rep in the many Silithid hives. Since players start in the deep red reputation levels with the Brood, this takes a lot of time. Suffice it to say that between the sheer logistics and difficulty of 40-player raiding, the attunements required for even entering those raids, and the fact that only ONE copy of these quest items was available in most cases, it was a hot competition to be the person who had the group and infrastructure to pull this process off. And that was happening alongside the War Effort, which was completely external to the raiding scene.
