1827 - Dumont d’Urville faced mutiny from matelot (seaman) Simonet (in my head he looks like Des Voeux and has a thick southern French accent, as he was from Pérols) and a few others “kidnapped” on the beach by Tonga men who were sent by a local chief, Tahofa. D’Urville threatened to destroy Mafanga, a sacred site, to incite other chiefs to bring Tahofa to reason, in vain. The local soldiers had rifles and Simonet had taught them how to shoot. It was dangerous for the Astrolabe to be so close to the reefs, but d’Urville knew some of the seamen kidnapped were innocent so he would not leave them. For three days, cannon fired on Mafanga, killing only one man and making few damages due to ingenious fortification from the locals. Yet, in the end all the seamen were freed and returned to the ship, except Simonet and Reboul who had gone in the forest. Knowing it would be too dangerous to have them on board and as he did not want to lower the crew’s mood with death penalty for Simonet, D’Urville left them in Tonga. For @lastrolab a photo off of my camera roll of my 13-year-old #Delos oxfords, inspired by the John Lobb St James’s Rodney bespoke model. #Bergeronette leather with natural sun fading patina. Not a posed pic, taken while futzing around with my Lobb shoebags for a friend. #swansongsrjdm #anthonydelos #bespoke #bottier #custom #cordwainer #grandemesure #bottiersurmesure #madeinfrance #handmadeinfrance #cordonnier https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHGj9Vp2rl/?igshid=1gz3whd6gh84y
