OPINION: Why PreCure's Good, Colorful Optimism is So Welcome
Magical girls are something of a time-honored genre among anime. The traditional formula of young girls acquiring fantastical superpowers in order to save the world has given rise to some renowned classics like Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. But we're here today to talk about one shining gem of the genre: Pretty Cure. Already popular in Japan, two shows from the long-running franchise have made their official (Crunchyroll) debut in unadulterated fashion. If you've never heard of Pretty Cure, now is the perfect time to see how this cheery and uplifting series can stack up to the big leagues in the magical girl world.
For the uninitiated, Pretty Cure (typically shortened to PreCure) is a long-running series of magical girls that isn’t too unlike your standard Super Sentai or Kamen Rider affair. The series focuses on a group of girls who transform into superheroes to save the world, but there’s a new entry to the series every year with new characters, different themes, and varying stories. It's worthy to note that this isn't PreCure's first arrival in western territories. The original show received an English dub in 2009 that only aired in Canada. Two other shows in the franchise were also released in western territories on Netflix, although the dubs, marketed as Glitter Force and Glitter Force Doki Doki were far less faithful in their adaptations with name changes and wildly different dubs.
Along with the first series, Futari wa Pretty Cure, Crunchyroll is currently streaming two shows from the franchise. The latest installment is Healin' Good Pretty Cure, which follows three young girls who team up with fairy doctors-in-training to save Earth from a mysterious evil who seeks to cover it in disease. Kira Kira Pretty Cure a la Mode first premiered in 2017 and followed five girls who use the magic of sweets and baking to fight dastardly villains. The former has new episodes every week, and you can stream Kira Kira in its entirety right now!
From the get-go, Healin’ Good and Kira Kira contain all the hallmarks of a more standard magical girl show: bright and colorful transformations, adorable fairy companions, and thinly-veiled toy commercials are all at the forefront of each episode. It’s everything and more that you can expect for an anime with young girls as its target demographic. For all intents and purposes, PreCure is harmless, glamorous Saturday morning cartoon fun, with optimistic and impactful storytelling that playfully balances raw emotion with the magical girl genre's more typical tropes.
Between Healin’ Good and Kira Kira, PreCure as a franchise presents a strong case for how magical girls need not sacrifice its optimism for good storytelling. Kira Kira does this in the form of excellent character stories. The story of using sweets to save the world is quirky and cute enough on its own, but the slice-of-life format allows each character their own spotlight and character growth. Complex relations, pursuing your dreams in the face of adversity, and overcoming your anxieties help Kira Kira truly stand out as a relatable genre contemporary.
On the other hand, Healin’ Good does well to interweave monster-of-the-week stories and sparkly transformations into each character’s development. Nodoka Hanadera (Cure Grace), the leader of the team, spends much of the series having many first experiences after being hospitalized during her early childhood and is driven by her new lease on life to help others. Chiyu Sawaizumi (Cure Fontaine) has a strong sense of responsibility when it comes to saving the world, but also learns to apply that to her normal ambitions. Hinata Hiramitsu (Cure Sparkle) is flighty and ditzy and often quits things when they become difficult, but learns how to see things through and rely on her friends through those hardships.
Even their fairy partners have their own little character arcs. Whereas magical girl mascots are typically reserved for comic relief or toy fodder, these fairies are thoughtful characters in their own right. Rabirin eventually must learn how to accept herself and trust in other people rather than shoulder the burden on her own. Pegitan has a simple but heartwarming arc on self-confidence. Nyatoran allows himself to compartmentalize his infatuation with another person with his bond of friendship with Hinata without one trampling over the other. Even Rate, the tiny dog princess who often needs to be protected, actively wants to, and eventually becomes, part of the fight alongside Cure Earth.
When it comes to magical girl shows, it's been easy for PreCure to fly a little under the radar when compared to other shows. Despite its popularity in Japan and a dedicated underground fanbase, the lack of overt availability of PreCure made it become a little overshadowed by the darker, grittier subgenre. For instance, the aforementioned Madoka Magica became wildly popular and influential for its deconstructionist approach. Though Madoka was far from the first magical girl anime to incorporate darker plotlines, it played a major role in popularizing the concept. Shows like YUKI YUNA IS A HERO and Magical Girl Raising Project began to crop up to ride the coattails of Madoka's success and presented dire, even violent interpretations of these stories.
Given all the attention granted unto subversive tropes in magical girls, deconstructionist storytelling began to feel more like the norm. But while there’s no harm in preferring one type of magical girl to another, or two subgenres coexisting within the same space, people don’t give nearly enough credit to the narrative value and substantial depth that the magical girl standard still offers.
And that's why the boundlessly hopeful Pretty Cure feels so good: Healin' Good and Kira Kira are strong examples of how the same old formula can still be used to tell great stories. While PreCure doesn't outwardly aim to appeal to anyone outside its target demographic, it doesn’t really need to — fun to be had and emotions to be felt for people of any age who just want to watch a story about magical girls saving the world without too many strings attached. Both Kira Kira and Healin’ Good, PreCure offer the same emotional and narrative value as any other show while still embracing the bright colors and cheerful nature we’ve come to expect from glittering, brightly-colored superheroes.
Will you be checking out Pretty Cure on Crunchyroll? Are you a longtime fan or are these your first? Comment below and let us know!
Carlos (aka Callie) is a freelance features writer for Crunchyroll. Their favorite genres range from magical girls to over-the-top robot action, yet their favorite characters are always the obscure ones. A better world is on our power to create
This piece first appeared in the IPPR’s Progressive Review in June 2018.
British politics is currently convulsed with contested claims about what we do know, and what we can know, about who has done what in global affairs. Whether it is the row around Boris Johnson’s claims about Porton Down’s findings on the Salisbury attack or Jeremy Corbyn’s equivocation about the suspected chemical attack in Douma, it can sometimes seem as if it is the nature of the facts rather than the appropriate foreign policy response to them that is dominating Westminster. The policymakers of a country that retains membership of the economic premier league, the UN Security Council and NATO seem to be spending more time commenting on the reality of events than determining the course of them. This is not inevitable: Britain could remain one of the most influential countries in the world, even as our new reality is defined by ‘the three posts’ of being post-imperial, post-industrial and post-Brexit. Retaining power will require using one of our unequivocal comparative advantages – our status as a development powerhouse – to better effect.
While the front benches slug it out over versions of the truth on security questions, the picture on development ones is different. The parties don’t have competing accounts of the same events, but they do each deploy a narrative which, in being partial, obscures the whole messy truth.
On the left the focus tends to be on the outrage which rightly accompanies what has been an incredibly bleak beginning to 2018. In January four Save the Children colleagues in Afghanistan became the latest in the litany of grim statistics of aid workers murdered in the course of their work. In February we released new research[1]showing that more children than ever – 357 million globally – are living in areas impacted by conflict. In March new figures[2]showed that at least 37 Syrian civilians had been killed every single day since mid-2017. April began with more deaths in Gaza and the Central African Republic and throughout the year we’ve seen the kind of extreme weather that climate campaigners have been warning for years could put all of our recent development gains in to reverse. Against that backdrop it is easy to see why Shadow Secretary of State for International Development Kate Osamor warned, in Labour’s recently launched paper A World for the Many Not the Few[3], that “we should be under no illusions about the scale of the global crisis we face today, or how far there is to go”.
For thinkers on the right there is tremendous frustration that the parallel story of progress remains largely untold. Fraser Nelson reminds us repeatedly that “the point cannot be made enough. We’re living through a period of amazing progress – in medicine, prosperity, health and even conquering violence”[4]. This too is true.
Above we’ve taken the gloomiest possible read on 2018. What if instead we applied a rosier lens? In January Rwanda implemented universal eye care, becoming the first poor country to do so in a world where over 200 million people can’t see clearly. In February Ruth Davidson was in Afghanistan with the HALO Trust to celebrate the clearing of millions of square miles of minefield. March saw Unicef announce new figures[5]suggesting action on child marriage had spared 25 million girls from this appalling abuse in the last ten years. April’s Malaria Summit celebrated the 60% drop in malaria deaths in the first fifteen years of this century. These are astonishing achievements and help explain why the development champions of the centre-right fret that the left’s focus on the work undone only serves to suppress public enthusiasm for the cross-party project of eliminating global poverty.
A complete account of life on earth in 2018 is one that reconciles these two. The hope that progress is inevitable breeds complacency, the fear that it is impossible generates paralysis. What is needed instead is the widespread national sense that there is still much that we can do, but that doing it requires us to deploy British assets of which we should be immeasurably proud. While the aid agencies, rightly, have spent the opening months of the year focussed on improving safeguarding and protections against harassment, we have also been working together to rekindle public enthusiasm for making poverty history. The UK remains the ‘Silicon Valley’ of development, with an incomparable concentration of charities, universities, corporates, foundations and research institutions with global reach. That eco-system could turbo-charge government efforts to build a Global Britain, but success will require picking a few issues on which change is both winnable and potentially transformative.
To take just one example of an area where we could still lead, pneumonia is currently the number one killer of children under five worldwide. We should be hugely hopeful it can be overcome: after all, it has only emergedas a bigger killer than malaria, diarrhoea and measles combined because previous efforts on those diseases have been so successful. At the same time, we should be appalled that a disease that can be treated with antibiotics costing as little as 30p is still claiming two children’s lives every minute. Britain, long one of the biggest drivers of breakthroughs in global public health and the home of the globally-admired National Health Service, is well placed to convene partners to drive down vaccine pricing and target aid to building the universal health coverage and global supply of oxygen and antibiotics which can end preventable pneumonia deaths.
Or to take another: the protection of children caught up in the world’s worst conflicts. We can be proud that Britain has been at the forefront of international efforts on preventing sexual violence in conflict, for an Arms Trade Treaty and for action on landmines. But it cannot possibly be justified that we have agreed to sell 48 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia with no guarantees they will not be used as part of the aerial bombardment of Yemen, a campaign which has already seen the bombing of 800 schools. Once again, British expertise would be well deployed in protecting children. Two thirds of Syria’s children have had a family member killed, been injured themselves or had their home bombed. They are showing signs of what psychologists call ‘toxic stress’, a prolonged fear response which permanently impairs development. Children’s mental health needs a global champion with a track record of delivering predictable, high quality aid, but more than that it needs a foreign policy heavyweight prepared to end the culture of impunity surrounding the attacks which breed trauma in the first place. Britain’s armed forces are well placed to lead by example (by, for instance, updating training manuals to outline the specific steps the UK will take to mitigate civilian harm from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas), but we also need a political leadership willing to use every tool at its disposal, whether it is suspending arms sales or gearing every element of our defence and diplomacy strategies to the protection of civilians.
These are just two examples of causes a post-Brexit Britain could champion. We have just twelve years until the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals. Twelve years ago nobody would have predicted the Arab Spring, the Brexit vote or the victory of a nativist authoritarian after eight years of a liberal African-American President. The world can be transformed in just over a decade. The question for the coming one is whether Britain’s political leaders can inspire the public with a story of the world it is in our power to create – and whether they believe in it themselves.

The goals started to flow on Friday night when Leicester thrashed Southampton 9-0, before Chelsea beat Burnley 4-2 and Brighton won 3-2 against Everton on Saturday.
Manchester City kept the pressure on Liverpool with a win over Aston Villa but the Reds responded with a big victory over Tottenham on Sunday.
Here’s my team of the week – have a read and select your own below.
Goalkeeper – Ederson (Manchester City)
Ederson:Two great first-half saves by Ederson from John McGinn and Douglas Luiz during the same phase of play against Aston Villa kept Manchester City alive. There is no doubt about it, City have issues in defence and it has taken Ederson in goal these past few weeks to pull them out of some very difficult situations. However, the Brazilian is not only capable of keeping clean sheets when it matters but spotting when the opposition is vulnerable. His long-ball delivery for Jesus to flick on for Raheem Sterling to ram home made a mockery of the notion that City over-indulge and cannot play a direct game. This is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League on current form.
Did you know?Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Ederson has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League (41).
Defenders – Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle)
Alexander-Arnold: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pass on the run for Sadio Mane in the first half was out of this world. There are very few full-backs who have such an acute appreciation of the sort of pass a striker needs but Alexander-Arnold is certainly one of them. More importantly he has the ability to provide the pass. Quite apart from anything else he is back to his best after what I thought was a shaky start to the season for such an accomplished youngster. As for Spurs, when are they going to learn that Serge Aurier, as good a player as he can be on occasions, cannot be trusted? He is rash and unreliable.
Did you know?Alexander-Arnold has provided 14 assists in the Premier League since the start of last season – the joint-most by any defender alongside team-mate Andy Robertson.
Maguire: Since the arrival of Harry Maguire in the back four at Old Trafford there has been a calm in defence. This was no better illustrated than against Liverpool at home and again away at Norwich where VAR did its best to disrupt, confuse and irritate just about everyone. While his team-mates were being awarded penalties and missing them, Maguire remained composed and played the game with a quiet authority. He may have cost £80m but I’m beginning to think he is worth it in the current climate. He might even save Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job.
Did you know?Maguire has won 39 aerial duels in the Premier League this season – 15 more than the Manchester United player with the next most (Victor Lindelof, 24).
Lascelles: After a poor start to the season Newcastle responded to some very sharp criticism. Their performance away at Spurs was probably the catalyst to their resurgence. Leadership has been the key both on and off the pitch. Jamaal Lascelles has been quite brilliant in that department for Newcastle. He takes responsibility in defence and is not afraid to attack in the opponent’s box. Wolves, on the other hand, looked the better side in the second half but Newcastle held the fort and with 10 men. Newcastle displayed plenty of bottle.
Did you know?Lascelles has made more clearances (48) and more headed clearances (23) than any other Newcastle player in the Premier League this term.
Midfielders – Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Scott McTominay (Manchester United)
Pulisic: I said last week that Frank Lampard’s ability to bring on the youngsters at Stamford Bridge was starting to make an impact and I never even included Christian Pulisic. The scream of delight after the United States international scored his first Premier League goal for the club told only part of the story. When he arrived at the club I thought “what’s the game coming to; we’re now spending £58m for an American!” This hat-trick against Burnley is starting to suggest that this was money well spent. As for Lampard, how many more of these impressive youngsters does he have waiting in the background ready to explode onto the scene?
Did you know?Pulisic became Chelsea’s youngest hat-trick scorer in Premier League history (21y 38d), while he also became the first player to net a ‘perfect’ league hat-trick for the Blues since Didier Drogba against Wigan in May 2010.
Kovacic: I normally don’t care for statistics – they are for statisticians – but when I saw the pass rate for Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho against Burnley I suddenly paid attention. The performance of Kovacic in particular has been a revelation since the departure of Maurizio Sarri and the arrival of Lampard. The way he used the ball to cut Burnley to shreds was cruel at times. It’s hardly surprising Chelsea fans are enjoying their football so much these days. They have developed a generation of players desperate to play for a manager who, along with his players, are going places.
Did you know?Kovacic has completed more dribbles than any other Chelsea player in the Premier League under Frank Lampard (22).
Gundogan: If it’s not David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne or Raheem Sterling dominating the headlines, Man City still have players who can turn a game on a sixpence. This time it was Ilkay Gundogan who ran the show against Aston Villa. The Germany international is often perceived as the junior partner in comparison to the players previously mentioned. Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola may well find himself relying on Gundogan’s services as he tries to get City to their first elusive Champions League final while still trying to retain the title.
Did you know?Gundogan has completed 318 passes in the opposition half in the Premier League this season – the only Manchester City player with more is Rodrigo (343).
McTominay: I’ve watched this lad a lot in recent weeks and couldn’t work out why Solskjaer keeps playing him. He runs about a lot and is certainly not afraid to put his foot it – but a Manchester United player? Against Liverpool he was excellent and after his performance against Norwich he finds himself in my TOTW. He’s also bright enough not to get involved in taking penalties for Manchester United. I think I might have misjudged him.
Did you know?McTominay’s opener was Manchester United’s 2,000th goal in the Premier League, with the Red Devils being the first team in competition history to reach this tally.
Forwards – Ayoze Perez (Leicester), Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
Perez: There have been players who have scored great goals, even had great games, and missed out on being in my TOTW because other players have had a greater impact on a match. However, what I will always acknowledge is when a player scores a hat-trick in a Premier League fixture. Ayoze Perez has scored two in his career against Southampton, the latest inflicting the most telling destruction of a football team I have seen in years. Would Leicester have had such a devastating effect on the Saints had VAR not interfered in proceedings? I think not. Read more about what I have to say on this affair in the Crooks of the Matter below.
Did you know?Leicester’s Perez became the first player to score a hat-trick in back-to-back Premier League appearances against a single opponent since Luis Suarez against Norwich City in September 2012.
Mane: Two seasons ago it was Mo Salah who was carrying Liverpool. Last season it was Virgil van Dijk who had a massive influence on the success of the team. This season it’s Sadio Mane who is carrying Liverpool on his shoulders. His speed, power and strength have been a feature of Liverpool’s play this season and without the Senegal international, life at the top would be considerably less comfortable. It was Mane who caused mayhem in Tottenham’s ranks the entire match and the reason they lost. With a little help from Serge Aurier, of course.
Did you know?Mane has scored more goals in Premier League home games than any other player in the competition in 2019 (15 at Anfield).
Vardy: There is a ruthlessness to Jamie Vardy’s finishing that sometimes makes you have to look away. Vardy started his scoring tirade when Southampton were 4-0 down. He completed his hat-trick to make it 9-0 with the last kick of the game. The delight on Vardy’s face was as if he had just scored the winning goal in the final seconds of a cup final. Is it any wonder Brendan Rodgers is looking so pleased with himself when he has a striker in his team with that kind of attitude. It’s hardly surprising Vardy is so unpopular with opposition supporters.
Did you know?Vardy has scored 18 goals in the Premier League since 3 March (Brendan Rodgers’ first game) – the most of any player in the competition in this period.
Now it’s your turn
You’ve seen my selections this season. But who would you go for?
Crooks of the Matter
I thought at the time the sending-off Ryan Bertrand was a harsh decision but when I discovered Mike ‘clever clogs’ Dean was behind VAR in the Southampton versus Leicester fixture I wasn’t surprised.
Anyone who has played football at any level, and especially in the conditions both teams had to contend with, would have made allowances for the players.
If Dean has played the game (and I rather suspect he has) then he should know what defenders have to cope with and therefore I can only assume that he wasn’t a very good player.
There wasn’t one pundit in the BBC Match of the Day studio or anyone on the pitch at St Mary’s who would have sent Bertrand off for the challenge on Perez. And why? Because they recognised and understood the conditions.
Quite apart from destroying what would have been a perfectly good contest for the viewing public, he’s instigated huge embarrassment to the club, its players and put a manager’s career on skid row – all on a whim. You would also be very wrong to compare Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff’s dismissal against Wolves to Bertrand’s. Longstaff was reckless.
The long-held tradition in football that the referee’s decision is final is no longer the case. Andre Marriner gave Leicester the advantage by letting play run on and they took it. To punish the Saints further with the ultimate sanction and a sending-off, as opposed to a booking, was double jeopardy and, in my view, not in the spirit of the game.

Acclaimed actor and producer Cate Blanchett has presented the 5th Filmmaker Award. The award ceremony took place during the 15th Zurich Film Festival at an exclusive IWC Schaffhausen private dinner at rooftop restaurant Haute. The award, which is worth CHF 100,000, supports Swiss film projects that are in the production or post-production stage. A few days earlier, the Zurich Film Festival was officially opened with “Die Stimme des Regenwaldes” by Niklaus Hilber, a previous winner of the Filmmaker Award.
Few individuals in the film industry possess the appeal of Cate Blanchett: Since the 1990s, the Australian actor, who is also an IWC brand ambassador has appeared in dozens of feature films and TV series. In 2014, she won Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her leading role in “Blue Jasmine”, having already won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in “The Aviator” in 2004. Blanchett is not only omnipresent on the silver screen; she also regularly appears on stage and is involved in various projects as a producer or artistic director. She also works tirelessly with charitable organisations and other partners to improve society or the environment. As a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR, she is focused on the issue of forced displacement and statelessness, meeting with refugee families overseas and addressing states and corporate leaders at the UN Security Council. Blanchett’s many successes also inspire countless women who want to gain a foothold in the film industry. She presented the 5th Filmmaker Award at an exclusive IWC Schaffhausen private dinner at the restaurant Haute, which was held as part of the 15th Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). She was spotted wearing the new Portofino Automatic 34, the latest women’s watches added to IWC’s iconic Portofino line and currently the smallest in the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer’s portfolio.
“WANDA, MY MIRACLE” WINS THE 5TH FILMMAKER AWARD
A total of thirty-eight projects had applied for the 5th Filmmaker Award. The jury finally selected “Wanda, My Miracle” as the winner. The film tells the story of a Polish woman named Wanda. While looking after an older Swiss couple in their villa, she embarks on an affair with their youngest son Gregor and unexpectedly becomes pregnant. The film will be released in 2020. Directed by Bettina Oberli from Bern, it is produced by Lukas Hobi and Reto Schaerli, who, in addition to the Filmmaker Award, were also presented with a Portugieser Automatic (IW500703) from IWC Schaffhausen. The premiere of “Die Stimme des Regenwaldes” (“Paradise War”) by Niklaus Hilber likewise underscored the importance of the Filmmaker Award. This highly anticipated film had officially opened the ZFF on 26 September. Telling the gripping story of Swiss environmental activist Bruno Manser, who fought alongside the Penan people to save the rainforest in Malaysia, this project won the Filmmaker Award in 2017.

“I am proud that the Filmmaker Award helped to bring this project to the large audience it deserves. The challenges involved in making this ambitious film have made it very clear that this award is essential for Swiss filmmakers.” – Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen
FILMMAKER AWARD HELPS TO BRING PROJECTS TO THE BIG SCREEN
The Filmmaker Award, which comes with CHF 100,000, was established by the Verein zur Filmförderung in der Schweiz (Association for Film Funding in Switzerland). As well as the co-founders of the ZFF, Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri, this association also includes Ringier CEO Marc Walder and IWC CEO Christoph Grainger- Herr. The prize closes a gap in Swiss film funding by targeting projects that are in the crucial production or post-production phase.

Tivvy V Basingstoke Match Report By Simon Ellis
TIVERTON TOWN 3-2 BASINGSTOKE TOWN
Saturday 16th September 2017. A date for all the historians and statisticians to take note of and remember. Whilst it is NOT the first time (contrary to reports) that the Yellows have found themselves at their highest ever league position at the top of the Southern Premier Division, as they achieved the same feat in September 2002 (4 days) and August 2006 (5 days), it will be the longest period they spend there after their fifth straight home victory of the season. Such an achievement early on in the campaign will not go unnoticed elsewhere and although one of the `newbies` to the group it will make other sides think long and hard before underestimating Tivvy. Three up at half time, 2 more from Levi Landricombe to continue his fine scoring run and a `greatest ever at Ladysmead` contender from eventual Man of the Match Ben Mammola had Tivvy seemingly cruising to victory before Basingstoke scored twice after the interval to set up a tense finale.
After what seems to be the customary opening period at Ladysmead nowadays where the visitors start on the front foot, the rest of the first half was a fairly even affair, chances a plenty for both sides in an open and entertaining game, apart from one glaringly obvious difference. All great teams are exactly that, teams, but with them there is usually a figure head, a talisman. The great Liverpool sides of the 70`s and 80`s had Ian Rush, the great Manchester United sides of the 90`s had Andy Cole and at Tiverton currently, Levi Landricombe. 73 goals in 82 appearances including his latest brace has him as one of Tivertons` most prolific ever forwards. Certainly his first was not without a good slice of fortune, after a complete air shot at Nick Hursts` cross, his second effort took a sizeable deflection off `Stoke defender Dan Collier to balloon over stranded keeper Colm McAdden, his second 2 minutes later though was a beauty. Ollie Knowles was tripped 25 yards from goal and similar to numerous previous occasions, a left foot effort was bent around the wall in to the top corner.
Excellent goalkeeping and bodies on the line prevented the visitors making in-roads into Tivertons` lead, notably when Rice tipped Sam Deadfields` curling effort on to the bar, Mammola found himself in the right place to clear the lines and the bravery of Michael Landricombe blocked Tim Wohlfiels` fierce effort before Mammola scored, as previously mentioned, an outstanding third. Genuinely reminiscent of something Lionel Messi makes a habit of doing, Mammola strode forward from the half way line, waltzing past several defenders along the way before prodding neatly home from close range when confronted by McAdden.
The Dragons responded instantly after the interval, top scorer Sam Smart added his fifth of the season after being played through and with 18 goals in their previous four wins, it was enough to set panic amongst home supporters. Such panic was, or should have been short-lived. McAdden saved well from the head of Michael Landricombe and Owen Howe had a goal chalked off for offside as the Yellows looked to re-assert their chokehold on the game. Jordan Rogers and Tom Bath replaced Howe and Levi Landricombe and both had their chance to put the game to bed before `Stoke set up the grandstand, nervous finale. McAdden saved with his legs from Bath as he raced clear of tiring defenders and Rogers deflected shot bounced off the crossbar as the visitors pushed higher.
With the job seemingly done and four minutes of injury time had passed, no-one seemed particularly interested in Charlie Kennedy when he picked up the ball 20 yards from goal, so he duly arrowed a low shot into the corner but despite their best efforts in the remaining minutes, the resolute defending of the Yellows ensured there would be no fairy tale comeback.
Tiverton: Martin Rice, Nick Hurst (Scott Rogers 78), Callum Hall, Jamie Price, BEN MAMMOLA, Tom Gardner, Jamie Short, Ollie Knowles, Owen Howe (Tom Bath 78), Levi Landricombe (Jordan Rogers 78), Michael Landricombe. Goals: Levi Landricombe 17, 19 Ben Mammola 45+1. Attendance: 220.

Week 5: Politics and cultures
In week 5 we looked at politics and cultures and how these are currently being used through political campaigns. Many politicians are currently using social media platforms to connect with their audience digitally, and more so connect with the younger audience that can be hard to relate with. I believe that currently it is not being used very well in Australia and there is a lot of work to be done before this becomes a way for politicians to gain a large vote from, or even win an election.
Tumblr media
If we look at our current prime minister Scott Morrison and his latest news story that caught headlines goes to show there is room for him to really understand the whole social media 'thing'. There is current a photo going around the internet of Morrison and his family where the stripes from his sneakers have been photo shopped out of, why? Who knows. But it just shows that social media has not yet be grasped as an influential tool for politicians here in Australia and I believe this could be if it was used on a way to educate, rather than slam people with political information.
Tumblr media
A way that America has utilised social media and political campaigns is advertising. Instead of paying for advertising on television and radio many political campaigns are being recorded then added to places such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter this ensuring their message reaches thousands of people and without the astronomical price associated to it (Thoughtco 2019).
A great example outlined in this week's presentation by group B of where an Australian political got the social media 'thing' right, was Former New South Wales Premier Mike Baird. He became relatable through his social media presence to a younger audience by live-tweeting the Bachelor and posting a Jimmy Kimmel Mean Tweets style video on YouTube (Butler J 2017). This is creating relatable content that is similar to what millennials already consume through influencers or people they actively follow, into politically informative information that can educate the viewer on up-coming elections. Primarily this is done to gain respect and acknowledgement through millennials, but I believe when this becomes poll influencing, is when politicians use social media to educate and drive campaigns through social media and not use it to just create a following but create an educated following.

Ghanaian stars who are playing for other countries
[caption id="attachment_741318" align="alignnone" width="620"] Ghanaian trio are among players who could have played for Black Stars[/caption]
Going from Gerard Asamoah and Marcel Desailly, there were plenty of Ghanaian-born players who decided not to wear the national team shirt throughout their successful careers.
However, the country was always packed with highly-talented names and such an absence did not leave significant consequences on the team’s results. Ghana were regular World Cup participants over the last two decades, but they missed out on the 2018 edition, hosted by Russia.
For the first time in a while, we can discuss the lack of talent as it is hard to find a genuine Ghanaian star in European football at the beginning of the 2020s. This is why, with the help and support of the experts at bettingtips4you.com, we decided to create a list of players who would have been of massive help for the current Ghanaian team had they decided to play for their parents’ country.
Dennis Appiah
The 27-year-old defender is a first-team regular for Nantes. He made a move to Les Canaris in the summer of 2019 after spending three years in Anderlecht.  Dennis is the kind of a player all coaches appreciate as he can easily fill the gap in every position at the back. He spent the entire youth career playing for the French national side, earning caps for the U16, U17, U18 and U21 team. A centre-back playing regularly for a team in the middle of the Ligue 1 standings would n doubts be a huge addition to the current Ghana squad.
Jerome Boateng
Speaking of the centre-halves, Jerome Boateng is probably the biggest name on the list. The “German” veteran has been the heart of Bayern Munich’s defence for the last nine years. He won the World Cup 2014 being a vital part of Die Mannschaft’s rock-solid back line alongside Mats Hummels. He also won the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League with the Bavarian giants. He represented Germany on more than 70 occasions. Interestingly, his younger half-brother Kevin-Prince Boateng still plays for the Ghanaian national team.
Ethan Ampadu
Son of the former Arsenal and WBA player Kwame Ampadu, Ethan chose Wales over England, Republic of Ireland and Ghana. He made his international debut for the U-16 English team but quickly switched for Wales. By now, the young centre-back made 17 appearances for the Dragons following his 2017 debut. He currently plays for RB Leipzig on loan from Chelsea as Frank Lampard did not use him at all in the first half of the 2019/20 season. Overall, the youngster made just one appearance for Chelsea (in 2017) and is yet to score his maiden senior goal.
Alexander Tettey
Tettey is 14 years older than Ampadu, but the current Ghanaian team would no doubts love to have a Premier League player in their ranks. Tettey is actually one of the rare players from this list who was born in Ghana but moved to Norway where he spent the entire childhood. The defensive midfielder spent his entire professional career in three clubs (Rosenborg, Rennes and Norwich City). He made a move from Rennes to Norwich City in 2012 and has made more than 220 appearances for the Canaries since then. He made 34 appearances for the Norwegian national team but has not earned a call-up since 2017.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Liverpool's central midfielder is among the best players on the list. He has been enjoying a fabulous form in the last couple of years. He won the 2018/19 Champions League with the Reds and is on the best way to clinch the Premier League silverware in the 2019/20 season. Georginio, who was born and raised in Rotterdam, scored 18 goals in 62 appearances for the Dutch national team. He also won Eredivisie with PSV and made it to the UEFA Nations League final with Oranje. A player of his qualities would make all the difference in the Ghanaian team.
Callum Hudson-Odoi
At the age of 19, Callum has prospects of being the future star of the game. He made a breakthrough with Chelsea in the 2018/19 season and continued to shine for Frank Lampard’s side at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign. Being still a teenager, Hudson-Odoi can be proud of more than 30 appearances for one of the most famous English Premier League clubs. Sadly for Ghanaian football admirers, Callum has already made his debut for the Three Lions and will represent the English national team in the future.
Mario Balotelli
Mario’s parents are both Ghanaians, but he was born in Palermo and spent an international career defending Italian colours. Mario Balotelli was an extremely promising prospect 15 years ago. He used to play for the giants such as Inter, Milan, Manchester City and Liverpool at the peak of his career. Balotelli is still active in the elite class of Italian football, but can't quite be proud of the form in Brescia. Even though he would probably sit on the bench in an ideal Black Stars team, his immense experience at the highest level could be of help in some important affairs.
Memphis Depay
Born in 1994 to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother, Memphis Depay spent his entire childhood in the Netherlands. It was hard to believe that he would ever wear a Ghanaian shirt, but he certainly has connections to this African country and would certainly play a pivotal role in the present time. In the real world, though, Memphis captains Ligue 1 giants Lyon and is the No 1 striker for the Dutch national team. Depay bagged 43 goals in 101 appearances for Les Gones and he is yet to reach the peak of his career.
Inaki Williams
We will complete the list with another high-profile striker. Inaki Williams was born in 1994 in Bilbao to Ghanaian immigrants He became a star in Bilbao making more than 200 appearances for one of the two biggest Basque teams since the debut in 2014. Interestingly, he made a debut for the Spanish national team in 2014 but has not earned any additional cap for La Furia Roja. Inaki would make a deadly attacking duo together with Memphis Depay. If you fancy betting on goalscorers make sure to check bettingtips4you.com for the latest promos.

John Bolton, Kobe Bryant, Grammy Awards: Your Monday Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good morning.
We’re covering new evidence related to the Trump impeachment inquiry, reaction to the death of Kobe Bryant, and the Grammy Awards.
New Ukraine details in John Bolton’s book
President Trump told his national security adviser in August that he wanted to continue freezing $391 million in aid to Ukraine until officials there investigated Democrats including the Bidens, according to an unpublished manuscript by the since-ousted adviser, John Bolton.
A key element of Mr. Trump’s impeachment defense has been that the aid holdup was separate from his requests for investigations. Here are five takeaways from Mr. Bolton’s book.
Mr. Bolton has said he would testify at Mr. Trump’s impeachment trial if he were asked to do so, but lawmakers said the Senate was highly unlikely to call new witnesses.
How we know: Multiple people described Mr. Bolton’s account of the Ukraine affair to The Times, but the White House did not answer questions about Mr. Bolton’s assertions. Mr. Bolton’s lawyer accused the White House of disclosing the book’s contents.
What’s next: Mr. Trump’s legal team is to resume his defense today, starting at 1 p.m. Eastern. During an abbreviated session on Saturday, the president’s lawyers attacked his accusers as partisan witch-hunters trying to remove him from office because they couldn’t beat him at the ballot box.
Coronavirus outbreak intensifies
The death toll in China from the respiratory illness rose to at least 80 today, and the government extended the Lunar New Year holiday by three days in an effort to limit travel. Here are the latest updates.
A top Chinese health official warned on Sunday that the virus’s spread was accelerating despite a lockdown affecting 56 million people. The quarantine could make the situation worse, including by exacerbating shortages of medical supplies.
The details: Most of the nearly 3,000 people who have contracted the virus live in China, but it has spread to 10 other countries. Five cases have been confirmed in the U.S.
Go deeper: Compared with China’s response to the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s, the government has responded faster to the current outbreak. But there are signs that officials, especially those at the regional level, were slow to recognize the danger and are continuing to mishandle the crisis.
Another angle: Many airlines are accommodating travelers who want to modify, delay or cancel China itineraries. Here’s what to expect.
Mourning an N.B.A. great
The death of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others in a helicopter crash in California on Sunday shocked the sports world and generated an outpouring of grief.
Thousands of people gathered at Staples Center, and condolences poured in from presidents and celebrities. Several entertainers paid tribute to Mr. Bryant at the Grammy Awards, which took place at the arena hours later.
The helicopter carrying Mr. Bryant, 41, went down near Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, in foggy conditions. Here are the latest updates.
Catch up: The helicopter was on its way from Orange County, where the Bryant family lives, to Mr. Bryant’s youth basketball academy, where he coached his daughter Gianna, who died in the crash. A baseball coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa was also killed, as were his wife and daughter. The other victims haven’t yet been identified.
Obituary: Mr. Bryant jumped straight from high school to the N.B.A. in 1996 and won five championships with the Lakers before retiring in 2016. He was an unquestioned basketball great, but his legacy is not so straightforward.
Iran’s 72-hour lie
The country’s military officials knew for three days that their own forces had shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet over Tehran this month, but it took a resignation threat from President Hassan Rouhani and an order from Iran’s supreme leader before the government acknowledged its fatal mistake.
We have an in-depth report on the cover-up and its political implications. The main takeaway: The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the elite force charged with defending Iran’s clerical rule at home and abroad, effectively sidelined the elected government in a moment of national crisis.
How we know: The Times interviewed current and former Iranian officials, ranking members of the Revolutionary Guards, and people close to the inner circle of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Another angle: The Pentagon said 34 American service members had sustained traumatic brain injuries when Iran fired missiles at an Iraqi military base this month. President Trump said last week that the troops’ concussion symptoms were “not very serious.”
If you have 6 minutes, this is worth it
The faces of life after the Holocaust
A ceremony today at Auschwitz will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland.
Before the event, our Opinion section published portraits of 75 Holocaust survivors. Among them are, clockwise from top left: Esther Meron, Motke Weisel, Sara Leicht, Thomas Geve, Batsheva Dagan and Avraham Harshalom.
Here’s what else is happening
A Middle East peace plan: President Trump is expected this week to reveal details of his long-promised proposal to broker peace in the region. But with the Palestinians refusing to participate in the process, diplomats in past peace efforts see the plan as a way to aid the re-election efforts of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
20 questions with Democrats: The Times interviewed six presidential candidates about foreign policy, the last book they read and more. Watch their answers here.
Changes to your credit score: Under a tweak to the widely used three-digit score, consumers in good financial standing should see their scores bounce higher. But those in financial distress may experience a fall.
Snapshot: Above, Billie Eilish accepted the Grammy Award for song of the year, “Bad Guy,” on Sunday. The 18-year-old won five awards and swept the major categories. Here’s a full list of the winners.
Metropolitan Diary: In this week’s column, a fresh start, a table at Grand Central and more reader tales of New York City.
What we’re reading: This Boston Globe investigation of the U.S. government’s inaction on E. coli outbreaks. The story of a 2-year-old boy who ate some of his father’s salad and developed the illness is “heartbreaking, terrifying and riveting,” writes our Times Insider editor, Jennifer Krauss.
Now, a break from the news
Cook: Slow cooker red beans and rice takes only about 20 minutes to set up in the morning.
Read: In her latest comic book endeavor, Roxane Gay adapts a short story, “The Sacrifice of Darkness,” from her 2017 collection “Difficult Women.”
Watch: “Miss Americana,” a Netflix documentary about Taylor Swift, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last week.
Smarter Living: Wirecutter recommends five cheap(ish) things to make over a cluttered closet.
And now for the Back Story on …
Bill Clinton’s impeachment
We asked Peter Baker, our chief White House correspondent, to reflect on a major moment in the lead-up to the last presidential impeachment and compare it with the current trial. He has covered both.
Twenty-two years ago this week came a milestone moment in the last presidential impeachment drama. President Bill Clinton was on the defensive after The Washington Post, where I was working then, broke the news that Ken Starr was investigating whether the president had committed perjury to cover up an affair with a former White House intern.
Mr. Clinton took to the microphone at the end of an event, glared angrily at the reporters in the room, wagged his finger and, with Hillary Clinton standing behind him, forcefully said, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”
We were struck by two things: One, that he seemed to briefly blank on her name, referring to her as “that woman,” before summoning it. But the second was the intensity of his denial. He was white-hot mad.
At that time, before the DNA and the grand jury testimony, we didn’t know if the story we were pursuing was bogus or if the president of the United States was lying to us and to the country. Of course, later we found out which it was.
Now, as Ken Starr re-emerges as a lawyer for President Trump in the current impeachment trial, and the administration’s explanations of what happened continue to fluctuate, it’s hard not to feel déjà vu.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.
— Chris
