"You said you're a mage?" Rapi was sure she heard the title passed around before but never knew if they were "real real". From all she knew they didn't exactly exist outside of fairy tale books and video game. But she didn't seem like the kind to lie either...
Tumblr media
"I can't say I've ever met one before you today. Though I guess there is a first time for everything here. And you said you're eating what?"

"That's...certainly a strategy." She couldn't argue it was a bad kind of logic if said master was pretty lucky to begin with. But judging by the expression they wore she doubted that was the case. So at the end of the day she was just causing more problems.
"Even if I wasn't traveling with you I feel the need to apologize. I've met several others who would have probably agreed with your master's logic. Though she sounds like someone you care for at least."
Better than most people could say about their own followers. Especially ones that got into trouble that much.
ʚїɞ - "Right. You wouldn't." It was such a silly question with an obvious common sense answer. So it probably wasn't comforting to the silver-haired girl to see just how relieved Fern was to hear it. "I suppose there's nothing to worry about then."
But this led to a circumstance where she had to admit to Frieren's silliest flaw.
Tumblr media
"Ah... My master insists on checking all chests even when we know its a mimic. The spell is only 99% accurate, but she always stakes it all on that 1% in hopes she might find something inside." Maybe if she opened one hundred chests there would be a chance? No, that wasn't how statistics worked.

"Trust me even some people who use it all the time don't even know how it completely works either." Maybe Rapi was speaking somewhat from her own experience. Compared to some of the others she met their own knowledge on it paled, almost to an embarrassing degree. Still better that then having absolutely no knowledge at all either.
"Rapi. It's nice to meet you Fern. I'll be sure to keep that in mind in case I have any questions. Thank you for your time today helping me out today."
The Nikke's words may have been a bit formal but if she was going to be trapped here for however long being cordial was the best thing she could be till more things came up that could use her help. Whenever that did happen she'd be ready but for now a little R&R to herself wouldn't hurt.
ʚїɞ - Fern nodded slowly regarding the question about her phone. "It was the first thing I had to learn how to use when I arrived. You can manage a lot of things with it, and it was the most convenient way to access the internet. I don't exactly understand how it works, but I know how to use it." And that was as far as she was willing to learn when she didn't even understand the basics of modern technology.
She pulled out her own cellphone and tapped it against Rapi's. There was a ding, indicating they had been added to one another's favourites on their contacts lists.
Tumblr media
"My name is Fern. No surname. If you would like to speak more, feel free to reach out even if you don't have a question." That was Fern's way of implying she would like to be friends.

"Not really I think I get the jist of everything going on here thankfully." Or at least Rapi was hoping. At the very least having someone who seems to take these sort of things with stride like her might've been a good friend to have here.
"Though you've learned know how to use a phone right?" Rapi said pointing off to her pocket. "If you wouldn't mind I'd like to keep in touch with you. And in the off chance I have an emergency question as well."
And she wouldn't need to worry about anyone spell checking her for simple mistakes. Unlike a certain group of two people she knew would be combing every text for one simple error...
ʚїɞ - "Sometimes the truth is harder to believe than fantasy, I guess." Fern didn't really know how else to describe it, but that saying made sense for her. Coming from a world that other would call "fantasy" meant that her own definition of "fantasy" was a little different.
She eyed the wall, where she noticed some of the brick was already slowly being restored. "I guess what you consider to be fantasy depends on what you know as reality in the first place." The city of Spirale felt more like something out of a fantasy book than say, a dragon to the mage.
Tumblr media
A slight smile was offered. "All we can do is support each other in this unfamiliar situation. Did you have any other questions?"

Upon seeing firsthand at how brazenly the young girl took her staff and shot out a blast breaking the wall, being fixed up in mere seconds Rapi had more then all the proof she needed that things here just were almost completely incomprehensible. It was one thing to understand there might be a world out there without the ever constant threat of creatures. But self-repairs, emergencies that seemed to happen on the regular, and plenty more rubbed her in ways she couldn't begin to understand.
The only thought that ran through her mind now was just what kind of hellish situation did she of all people manage to end up in...
Tumblr media
"Even if I did ask you how I don't think I'd believe it." The proof was right in front of her after all. Trying to fight it would just cause her more confusion then answers. "Still thank you for the demonstration. It does help clean at least some things up at the very least..."
ʚїɞ - "Six." The mage quickly reaffirmed that what she'd heard was correct. Her confusion about the state of the city made sense. It wasn't really easy to understand until you experienced it yourself. "They happen roughly every other month, and the type of emergency tends to be wildly different each time. As for the damage..."
Fern raised her right hand and her staff appeared out of thin air. She briskly pointed it at a nearby wall and fired off a blast of magic. Enough to chip away some of the wall and leave a scorch mark.
Tumblr media
"If you give it about five minutes, that will completely repair. Its like how the human body heals... but it's a city. Don't ask me how though."

"Six?"
She wanted to believe something went wrong with her hearing for that brief moment but she couldn't find any problems pop up upon hearing the word. Somehow despite there being any real destruction from what Rapi could see the idea of it being so consistent had wrapped around her like a blanket. An foreboding feeling of things to come for sure.
Tumblr media
"Well everyone has their work cut out for them here don't they..." For better or for worse. Though somehow she felt it was leaning more towards the later with how she said it. "But then why call them "major"? Judging from what I've seen so far there doesn't seem to be any lasting damage. Unless I'm not seeing it in the area surrounding here."
ʚїɞ - Out of the three of them back home, Stark was the only one who was prone to worry. Fern took after her master, and she considered Frieren to be much more indifferent to matters. When she wanted to fight the dragon came to mind... Frieren practically had to drag Fern there before Stark saved the day. It was a little ironic in a way.
She'd offered help, but of all of the questions to be asked...
Tumblr media
"Sorry, I might need you to clarify what you mean by "significant". Has there been a war? No. But there is some kind of "event" roughly every three to four weeks, so I'd have to recount roughly six major events in the past year alone." At least there was almost never a dull moment?

"Prone to worry more. I could think of a few friends that'd fit that description." Not that it was meant anything if they weren't here in the first place. But just in case Rapi heard individuals causing problems because they didn't have a clue where they were she could make a few accurate guesses as to their identity.
...And unfortunately probably be right. Still if she had been here a year then taking the opportunity to learn anything was for the best. At least without coming off as too pushy
Tumblr media
"Has anything significant happened here in the past year? The world I'm from is continuing to fight an ongoing war to secure humanity's future. But here there seems to be little to no battles at all."
ʚїɞ - "Hm. In a way. I didn't find it very scary, but I'm sure someone with a personality that was more prone to worry in the same situation would have had a harder time." Sometimes she felt fortunate to be the way that she was, even if it caused friction with people who didn't understand her at times.
Being open to a quick adjustment was probably the right plan of action. Fern didn't often think back to what she might do differently if she had to redo her first day in the city, but it probably would have involved buying more groceries. There were so many new foods here.
Tumblr media
"Is there anything you want to learn about in particular? I'm not familiar with the technology here, but if its about locations or amenities I might be able to help. I've been here for roughly a year after all."

"I can't imagine how weird it must've been for you."
The modern world wasn't exactly anything new for Rapi but she could understand how strange it was to someone who didn't have a single prior experience with it. And no less have to go about it by being dragged to a completely different world too. A flash of that bad luck must've felt pretty awful...
Tumblr media
"Though that is my plan. A lot of this place does remind me of where I come from. But there's obviously some differences..." For starters no Raptures. A world that she and every other Nikke was striving for potentially realized. Something many might not even realize was a far off reality for them.
"...Of course I also want to learn about what this place has as well. Especially if I'm going to be stuck here for awhile."
ʚїɞ - "Likely to market it, yes. I think saying "dough with hazelnut" isn't a phrasing that rolls off the tongue very well." If all they had to do was give it the shape of a beaver's tail to call it as such, then she supposed it wasn't that big of a deal. Such culinary practices could be observed even back home in bars and restaurants, though maybe not on such a creative scale.
Having been in the city for roughly a year now, she'd caught on to some tells when people were new. Visible confusion, clear signs that someone was lost, unfamiliarity with otherwise common terminology. As someone who had been through that herself, she thought it was only right to help where she could.
Tumblr media
"The concept of a "movie" was entirely foreign to me when I first arrived here, much less homes having electricity and lights." She added as a way to add some perspective about just how different their own arrivals had been. "It can be pretty shocking when you first arrive, but over time you'll get used to it."

"So they just called it that to give it a unique name. Interesting..." Though she did wonder what all of that had to do with an actual tail to begin with. Maybe they just thought it sounded cute and marketable enough to anyone who wanted it. While it didn't interest her too much she knew a select few individuals who would be head over heels to try one had they been dragged here.
Although maybe it was for the best they stayed back home. A food massacre was the last thing Rapi wanted to clean up.
"You'd be right though, I only recently arrived here. Judging from some of the others I've met I think I made the safe assumption that I'll be meeting plenty of people that could never come where I'm from." Rapi said coming from a place where she seen it all. But even then said "home" probably held plenty of more surprises on top of this city.
Tumblr media
"It's definitely a more unique experience that's for sure. Not to offend you. The idea of a mage would probably only pop up in movies or comics, never right in front of us."
ʚїɞ - "Oh? You must be newer... If you had been her a long while, you probably would have met numerous mages." She knew of a few at least. Her master, and then that blonde half-elf that her master had met, and then some who had similar abilities. Mage or not, magic was a common enough practice around Spirale.
Tumblr media
The question about her food felt extremely unrelated. "A beaver tail? It isn't an actual beaver tail to my knowledge. It's fried dough with cocoa hazelnut spread and other sweet toppings sprinkled on top." She really hoped it wasn't a real beaver's tail.

"Would I deliberately fall for a trap...?" For some reason she felt this was a trick question. If someone knew a trap was placed somewhere running directly into it or springing it on purpose was just careless behavior. Like one had a death wish or something of the like. Surely no one out there was that foolish with their way of thinking...
Tumblr media
"No I wouldn't. Is that something people in your world did for a specific reason?"
Though now that she thought about it Percival might've done something that foolish if it meant saving someone else. Even if she told him a million and one times that there were better ways of solving such an issue.
ʚїɞ - "My relationship with my master is fine." Fern's blunt response likely made her original complaint even more confusing. If everything was fine then what had she been commenting about it for? "Not ever relationship is perfect though, right? Not even the best ones." She got mad at Frieren sometimes. Frieren didn't always see eye to eye with her either.
Tumblr media
"Out of curiosity. If you knew a treasure chest was booby trapped, would you still open it anyways? Even if the chest might eat you?" Still, it probably didn't hurt to check, right?

"Statistically speaking it would teeter on unlikely odds. But considering what you've said about them so far I'll lean more towards no as well."
Still it would be nice for them to finally have a victory in their book instead of the opposite. Being ripped straight form a chest that many times had to be somewhat annoying after some time.
Tumblr media
"If its for the sake of something that expansive then I suppose it is admirable. Though perhaps they should be a little bit more alert of these sort of things rather than through caution to the wind. For the sake of everyone that may be friends with them."
Tumblr media
"That's...certainly a strategy." She couldn't argue it was a bad kind of logic if said master was pretty lucky to begin with. But judging by the expression they wore she doubted that was the case. So at the end of the day she was just causing more problems.

"Two of them?" It was pretty obvious the purple haired individual was talking about her but the comment was rather confusing. Had she seen a lookalike somewhere in the city that Mélusine hadn't been to yet? Or maybe there really was just another version of herself roaming around. Although if she had to pick one it would be the former...
"Do I look like someone you know?"
@robustdragonheart
ʚїɞ - Fern's ability to sense mana had been significantly weakened upon her arrival to the city but it wasn't gone completely. It was still enough to identify if someone possessed mana, but she couldn't really tell how much they had beyond a certain level. She'd sensed someone that had reached that cap nearby and had gone to investigate but...
It was a petite, teenaged girl with silver hair. She possessed a lot of mana on top of this, so it was a little like deja vu. Didn't she have too much of a trait crossover with her master?
Tumblr media
"Oh no... There's two of them." Saying that aloud was just going to confuse her after you gawked at her for so long, Fern.

Well she wasn't exactly quiet with her speech to begin with. If it was her way of trying to start a conversation then Melu had to at least commend it somewhat compared to other weirder methods. Still to look like someone's master of a completely different race was not normal.
Tumblr media
"I hope that your relationship with your Master is at least somewhat good. I'd rather not be the reason you feel any discomfort or regrets while you are here."
...And an elf? Weren't those drastically different from dragons?"
ʚїɞ - It was a comment that Fern probably shouldn't have said aloud, but she had a penchant for just blurting out the wrong thing at times. She hardly ever faced trouble for it since Frieren was so lenient, being awkward socially herself. And it wasn't as if Stark would dare say anything.
"Oh. You heard that..." Not that she had made any effort to hide it.
Tumblr media
"You remind me of my master a little, that's all. She's small and has silver hair. But she's an elf." There was no mistaking that big difference. This girl had normal ears.
