20240506: the History of LEGO Castle day 127. 3739 Blacksmith Shop (2002, 629 pieces, 130 different parts) The Blacksmith Shop is a two-story building with a light gray first floor with brown double doors and green 4x5 hinge plates covering one window on each of the sides visible from the front, a white and black second floor with red windows with green shutters, a blue roof, and a light gray chimney with red, blue, and black smoke on top. The building is built on two thin green 8x16 plates assembled with hinges so the entire building can be opened for play or closed for display. This set features two minifigures. -The first minifigure has plain black hair, a yellow minifigure head with black eyes and eyebrows and curly brown bangs and mustache, a dark gray torso with printed silver scale mail and a red necklace with black, and plain black legs. The head and torso were also found in three sets, 4817 Dungeon, 6091 / 6098 King Leo's Castle, and 6096 Bull's Attack. -The second minifigure has brown hair with bangs and a ponytail, a yellow minifigure head with curly medium brown hair with a red jewel in the center of a printed tiara and red lipstick, a red torso with a printed blue corset, and a red 2x2x2 hollow bottom slope with a blue dress print and a key on a rope belt. The minifigure head, torso, and dress were also found in 6091 / 6098 King Leo's Castle. There are several very interesting parts information bits for this set. -This set introduces the 1x4 modified brick with four side studs. -While the black spider had been in use in the Adventurers, Harry Potter, and Belville sets, this is the first appearance within the LEGO Castle theme. The same is true for the 4x2 slope and the 4L bar. -This is the only appearance of the chrome gold bugel / trumpet within the castle theme and it only appears in 11 other sets. -The brown 1x2x1 panel was only found in four other sets. -The dark gray 1x3 robot arm only appears in this set and five Star Wars sets. -The green 4x4 hinge roof only appears in two other Star Wars sets. Blacksmith Shop is the first truly civilian building and only second completely faction-neutral set within the LEGO Castle theme and it features a blacksmith and her merchant husband. (The first neutral set was 6010 Supply Wagon from 1984). This is also the very last set to use brown, dark gray, and light gray. From now on, colors are switched to reddish brown, dark bluish gray, and light bluish gray. Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is also available under the "Instructions" tab on Rebrickable. This set was designed by Jorn Tomsen, as part of the My Own Creation subtheme with information on his other builds available on BrickSet.

20240121: the History of LEGO Castle day 021. 6067-1 / 10000-1 Guarded Inn (1986 / 2001, 256 pieces, 85 different parts) The Guarded Inn is a red and black building with blue, red, and yellow flowers around red corner walls with black lattice work, a sloped black roof, a blue door, and an attached light gray stable and a light gray guard tower. In front of the building, a black sign with two cups and cluster of grapes hangs next to the stable opening. The open back of the building has a yellow table with a bundle of yellow, red, and blue flowers and a blue wine goblet. The four minifigures in this set include two guards with red torsos and blue arms and the gold and black crossed axe pattern and black legs with red belts, a knight with a blue torso and black arms with a silver breastplate pattern and a black plastic cape with blue legs and a black belt, and an innkeeper with a blue plastic cape, red "princess cone hat", a white torso with two red string necklaces and a blue v-neck, and plain blue legs labelled as "maiden". The set also features a white horse with a yellow saddle. This set has a LOT of firsts and a lot of unique parts. The three most unique parts of this set are the black 2x2 hard plastic inn sign with two cups and a bunch of grapes, the red 3x3x6 corner wall with a lattice pattern, and the red 2x5x6 lattice panel castle wall. The blue door is also only found in four other LEGO sets, which makes it less easy to find "in the wild". While the original 6067-1 was released in 1986, the LEGO Group decided to re-release it as part of the Legends theme in 2001. The only real differences between the sets are: the shiny dark gary sword becomes dark gray swords, switching out the 1x1 plates with thin U clips to thick U clips, and switching out the one clip yellow saddle for a two clip. This set is the very first truly civilian scene in the History of LEGO Castle so far, as it features an inn. It really is too bad the knight got a little drunk and then a little handsy with the inn's "maiden" owner, and he really did have it coming when she hit him over the head with her frying pan and then had to drag him into the back while the guards yelled encouragement about what to do with the knight so he might wake up and learn from his mistakes. Insulting the inn's owner just because she was a woman? And then GRABBING her? He desperately needed to be taught some manners. His trusted white steed certainly had fantastic manners, happily munching on some flower petals and never being an arrogant, self-involved prick. Maybe they could convince the horse to drag him through the mud for a bit and then leave him at the local guard shack? The inn's owner definitely felt this plan had potential and the inn's guards offered to fill out the paperwork for local law enforcement. Parts lists for this set can either be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable, while scanned instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. If you want to know more about the designer, Daniel August Krentz, BrickSet did a really nice tribute and has a full list of everything he designed. Additionally, 10039-1 was included in a LEGO Legend Castle Collection (K10039) from 2003 alongside 10000-1 Guarded Inn (re-release from 2001) and 3739-1 Blacksmith Shop (from 2002).

20240122: the History of LEGO Castle day 022. 6074-1 / 10039-1 Black Falcon's Fortress (1986 / 2002, 429 pieces, 93 different parts) The Black Falcon's Fortress was the largest Black Falcon's castle released until the Creator 3-in-1 Medieval Castle in 2021, and it's only slightly bigger than 6073-1 Knight's Castle. The Black Falcon's Fortress is a light gray castle with two towers in the front on either side of a front gate with a black drawbridge. The front towers use the new 3x3x6 corner wall, as do the back corners of the castle. The second floor of the castle has a small covered walkway with the brand new yellow 2x5x6 castle wall panel with black lattice work and a black sloped roof. This is also the first non-symetrical castle so far. The "Yellow" Castle (375-2 / 6075-2), the Knight's Castle (6073-1), and the King's Castle (6080-1) have all had a front gate tower and two matching towers at the right and left corners of the castle, but the Black Falcon's Fortress has the two towers in front making up the larger front gate and the off-center alcove in the rear. The set comes with six Black Falcons minifigures. Four of the minifigures have the standard blue Black Falcon torso with black arms and the silver and black halved falcon pattern on a triangular shield outline with plain black legs and black helmets, though two are archers and two spear wielders. The other two minifigures are both knights, one with a black torso and black arms with the silver breastplate print and one with a blue torso and black arms with the silver breastplate print, and both have black legs with red belts. The knights each have one horse, so one white horse with a red saddle and one black horse with a blue saddle. Unique parts in this set include the blue 2x2 hard plastic Black Falcons flag and the yellow 2x5x6 castle wall panel with black lattice work. The light gray corner wall with dark gray stone print was only found in two other sets, 6062-1 Battering Ram (1987) and 6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress (1989). While the original 6074-1 was released in 1986, the LEGO Group decided to re-release it as part of the Legends theme in 2002. The only real differences between the sets are: the shiny dark gary sword becomes dark gray swords, switching out the 1x1 plates with thin U clips to thick U clips, and switching out the one clip blue and red saddles for two clip saddles. Probably my absolute favorite part of this entire castle is how this is the one castle so far with an entry gate the carts up until this point will actually fit through, as the drawbridge is wider. Overall, though, this castle is such a beautiful design. It's fun to play with and very easy to close, pick up, and move around. I truly enjoy that about these early castles - how easy they are to move, so you can adjust your kingdom much easier, or even move the castle from active play to a shelf. Inventory lists for this castle can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. If you want to know more about the designer, Daniel August Krentz, BrickSet did a really nice tribute and has a full list of everything he designed.
