Zanskar - a not-so-known treasure of Ladakh and what is the most beautiful treasure of Zanskar is Phugtal Gompa or Phuktar Monastery. Earlier this gompa was just a cave inside a mountain. Today it is a beautiful Gompa where you can reach by doing a 2-3 hrs trek from Purne village. If you ask me what's so special about this monastery, I would say "everything". Right from the location, to its structure, Peaceful spritual mountain, to the pious area surrounding it, monks living in the monastery and everything. However, if I have to choose my fav among all then it had to be the Trek from Purne to Phugtal. You get to see Tserap River flowing in all its glory in the Lungnak Valley. The river water is frozen during the winter, turquoise blue during summer, and remains somewhere between white and Grey during monsoon and I did this trek during the monsoon. A unique thing about this Gompa is it's the only Gompa in Zankar that can only be reached by foot, no vehicle goes here...! !

The Key Monastery is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Lahaul and Spiti District of India. Located at an altitude of 4,166 metres above the sea level, the monastery is very close to the Spiti River in the #Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh in India. Also known as the Kye Monastery, it is believed to have been founded by Dromton, who was a student of the famous teacher Atisha in the 11th century.
The Key Monastery is over a thousand years old, and apart from being the oldest, it is also the largest monastery that can be found in the entire Spiti Valley. The magnificent monastery doubles up as a religious training centre for the Lamas, and about 300 lamas receive their education from here. It has a long and quite fascinating history that is attached to it: a long history that involves numerous attacks that the place had to face. Nevertheless, the monastery survived and celebrated the completion of its thousand years in the year 2000 in the presence of Dalai Lama.
