What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a system that assesses your ability to communicate in English. Its a test for those who don't speak English as their first language. Its goal is to determine your English proficiency (your result is a band score between 0 and 9). IELTS scores are recognized across the world! Due to its widespread recognition, IELTS is the most popular English language competency exam. IELTS is the world's most widely used English language competence test. The exam assesses the ability of the test taker to communicate in four basic English language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The IELTS test is divided into two sections: Academic and General Training. Students aiming to go for further studies the Academic Module, while those planning to live and work in another nation take the General Training Module. IELTS may be taken on a computer or on paper.

Structure

The IELTS test consists of four parts:

·         Listening

·         Reading ·         Writing ·         Speaking

How does this work

The Listening exam takes around 40 minutes to complete: 30 minutes to listen to a recording and answer questions about what you hear, followed by 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the Answer Sheet.

In a computer-based IELTS, you'll have two minutes to double-check your answers.

The Reading test lasts an hour, and your objective is to read text passages and answer questions based on what you've read.

The Writing test is similarly an hour long and is split into two parts: 20 minutes for a letter/report and 40 minutes for an essay.

The Speaking examination lasts up to 15 minutes and is divided into three sections:

·         An interview in which the examiner asks you a few questions

·         A cue card talk in which you are the one speaking and, ·         A two-way discussion with the examiner.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the IELTS exam.

Speaking Tips:

● Use familiar words.

● Do not worry about your accent.

● Practice common IELTS Topics Eg: Environment, Education, Internet

etc.

● Do not memories your answer; keep it natural.

● Pronounce words clearly.

● Try not to use the same words over and over again.

● Do not change your pace while speaking.

● Develop your vocabulary

-Open the thesaurus and find the synonyms for the words that you use

often.

-Use a range of grammatical structures.

-Use linking words and phrases like however, moreover, etc.

Reading Tips:

● Time management is important

● Look for key words or specific details.

● Skimming, i.e., reading quickly(To understand the main idea)

● Do not spend too much time reading the passage.

● Always set your timer when practicing.

● Do not make any assumptions while reading the passages.

● Practice reading a variety of English texts.

● As you read, circle or underline key words.

Writing Tips:

● Writing Task-1, 150 words minimum.

● Writing Task-2, 250 words minimum.

● Plan the structure of your essay before hand.

● Use your own words.

● Do not include words copied from the question.

● Always proofread what you have written.

● Do not use contractions. For example, isn't and weren't.

● Examine the questions properly and see that you cater to all the parts

of the questions.

● Do not use the same words multiple times in the same paragraph.

Listening Tips:

● Familiarize yourself with a range of accents.

● Do not leave any blank answers.

● Hyphenated words are considered one word. EG: Large-Scale

● Improving listening skills should be the top priority (listen to Ted Talks,

  BBC news, etc.).

● Watch out for indicators (e.g., but, finally, however, unless)

● Practice multitasking. (You should be able to read, listen and write at

  The same time)

Make sure you're ready for the big day.

In order to be well prepared for the examination, keep the following tips in mind:

Arrive early to ensure that you have enough time to register and find a seat.

Check in your things, such as electronic devices, books, and notes, at the designated test center location.

Make sure you have your identity card and any other necessary paperwork.

PALOTAI

Tokajban a Hegyalja fesztiválon hallottam először, MultiCafé sátor, Cadikkal és Zeekkel együtt természetesen. Aztán Rewind, meg egyéb bulik, fesztiválok. De nekem Palotainak inkább a rádiós oldala volt meghatározó. A Jövőzene teljesen átírt mindent, amit a djzésről addig gondoltam, tudtam. Ő mutatta meg, hogy mennyi minden belefér két órába, és hogy minden zenének megvan a helye, csak meg kell találni. Black Eyed Peas és jazz egy szettben. Drum and bass és valami arab népzene egymástól 15 percnyire. Mélységek és magasságok, hézagmentesen összeillesztve. A mai napig nem tudom, hogyan tudott ennyiféle zenét ismerni, tudni, hogy mikor van az a pillanat, amikor mehet rá a következő, úgy, hogy ne vedd észre, hogy az már a következő. Mindezt 2 lemezjátszóval meg egy keverővel, és nem egy NASA irányítópulttal.

Az, hogy képes vagyok bármilyen zenét meghallgatni és hogy annyi mindent be tudtam fogadni, az neki köszönhető. A Jövőzenéknek, a Sessionöknek, a Szerdaiaknak.

Ma beszabadultam a Magyary archívumban lelt atlaszokkal a MOL óbudai épületébe, ahol az ország talán legnagyobb digitalizáló asztala van, és a Triponttal befotóztuk (ők fotóztak, én pofáztam) ezeket az elképesztő és hatalmas ábrákat. A kutatók éjszakája jó lesz az ELTE ÁJK kari könyvtárában, főleg mert Bátorfy Attila fog ezekről beszélni. És kinek másnak köszönhetnénk ezt is, mint Keltnek.
