Yoichi may generally be an early riser, but that didn’t mean he was prepared for such an existential conversation so soon after dragging himself out of bed. 

“I mean, I... I would hope so,” he answers after a moment, choosing his words carefully. He doesn’t sound confident. He’s not stupid; they’ve all nearly died, probably a million times over by now. He’s not even sure of the age of the oldest person he’s met since the vampires rose to power, but certainly not over fifty. “...Do people actually get to retire anymore? Was that a trick question?”

"...Right." But is it? It feels wrong, it feels wicked, depraved in the way that old sermons sometimes spoke of humanity. Gekkoin was right when he spoke to him before he'd managed to contract with him; he was grateful to be alive. He had been afraid to die, so in a way, didn't a part of him ask for this? The rest of the squad seemed to have purer motivations---they were all protecting something, saving someone---and sure, so was he, but the primal, visceral wrath that has settled in the pit of his stomach lately... it doesn't suit him. It makes him feel sick, but there's nothing he can do about it.

No, he can't ever let his friends know about this. Not really. He shakes off the rotten feeling and flashes his squad leader a bitter smile. "Sorry, Shinoa. We should probably catch up to the others, huh?"
