The funniest thing in tgcf is the fact that somehow, qi rong is the best dad. Like. Qi Rong.
I mean:
-Feng Xin didn't even know that he had a kid and that kid is dead.
-Xie Lian says he's going to buy milk, fakes his death and comes back centuries later without the milk but with a new boyfriend and starts to give you life lessons. Also, 2 dead kids (Banyue and Lang Ying).
-You all know what Jun Wu did.
-Mei Nianqing: also went to buy milk, spent centuries away crying about his ex and painting. -10 points for not fighting fot xl's custody.
So, yeah. CONGRATS TO QR FOR BEING THE BEST DAD IN TGCF!! HE FINALLY WINS SOMETHING!!!!

I received a very thoughtful anon ask about Qi Rong and in the process of doing research for the ask, I came across a meta about Qi Rong on the Chinese website Zhihu that I absolutely loved, so I translated the meta into English - anon I will answer your ask ASAP, in the meantime I hope you're interested in this excellent meta:
I think Qi Rong's feelings for Xie Lian isn't that of a fan for his idol, but that of a child for an imaginary "father". So he wouldn't try to understand and study XL's character like Hua Cheng; he's only looking up to this "father figure".
This isn't a baseless conjecture - the relationship between father and son has always been a topic that can't be averted when it comes to Qi Rong. I'm guessing that when he was bullied and excluded by other kids in his childhood, it didn't occur to Qi Rong to hate the circumstances of his family; instead he wished for his father to stand up for him and help him teach those nasty kids a lesson. This wish had always existed in Qi Rong's heart and became a traumatising shadow of his childhood.
Whereas his cousin, the prince Xie Lian, who suddenly appeared in his life to help him, was unconsciously used by Qi Rong to fit his expectation of the "father". XL did what he expected a father to do, so he placed XL in his fantasies about a father. Since his abusive and useless father doesn't cut it, then someone as gentle and strong as XL must be the standard for what a "father" is like. Subconsciously Qi Rong had this idea.
Therefore I think a lot of the dumb and horrible things that Qi Rong did for XL is only due to the anxiety that a son feels towards the indifference of the "father", so he tried to do something compensatory to win the father's attention and approval; but this didn't work out at all.
This is also why he's good to Gu Zi, because Gu Zi is just another Qi Rong - he's abused by the father but still begs for the father's love and doesn't allow others to hurt his father. It's probably because Qi Rong understands what this feels like that he'd pretend to be a seemingly decent "father" for Gu Zi.
(Here the author also points out the connection between Qi Rong and Gu Zi based on their names, which needs to be explained to English readers in more detail - Qi Rong's name "Rong," in Chinese "容", is comprised of two parts: 宀 and 谷. The latter part is "Gu" (谷) as in Gu Zi's name, and the former part 宀 stands for a house or a home - in this sense the character "Rong 容" (Qi Rong) incorprates the character "Gu 谷" (Gi Zi) and provides a "home" or "shelter" for "Gu".)
Qi Rong shows off all kinds of places to the kid that he's never been to, deliberately bigs himself up, and protects the kid at the dire moment, because all of these are what Qi Rong hoped his father would do for him. However, Xie Lian was only a kid himself; how could he answer Qi Rong's expectations for a father?
Qi Rong undoubtedly loathes his biological father, because when Qi Rong was a kid, his father was useless and crass, made a laughing stock of Qi Rong and his mother and became the reason Qi Rong was mocked by other kids. But when Qi Rong needed his father and needed him to scold those kids, his father didn't care about him at all (probably only the father could accomplish this sort of task since Qi Rong's mother was depressed and sickly; this plot is repeated later on in Feng Xin and his son).
When the entire country was being destroyed, his other "father," Xie Lian, became a laughing stock too. XL didn't manage to help him before and after his death. For Qi Rong, this is a replay of the events that happened when he was five years old; this perfect "father" proves no different from his biological father.
So fundementally Qi Rong hates Xie Lian for the same reason that he hates his biological father. He indeed projected too many wishful fantasies on XL, but I think it's more about the son's disappointment towards a "father" instead of a believer's disappointment for a "god". In fact, whether XL activated the human face disease or whether he managed to saved Xianle is of secondary importance to Qi Rong; the complaints someone could voice out loud usually aren't what he actually cares about.
Of course, Qi Rong is possessed by the idea of avenging Xianle to some degree, otherwise he wouldn't have plotted revenge with other Xianle descendants. But what Qi Rong really cared about, he only managed to speak when his soul dissipated - it's what he always wanted to say to Xie Lian and his biological father but never could: "I worship and need you so much, but you don't care about me at all". This is more the case of a son who craves the father's love and complains about it. The relationship between Qi Rong and Gu Zi is comparable to the relationship between Jun Wu and Xie Lian. At least Gu Zi received some paternal love and won't grow up to be like Qi Rong, which is nice.
(For anyone interested in reading the original Chinese, here's the link: https://www.zhihu.com/question/372905885/answer/1735047946?utm_psn=1754070720630493184&fbclid=IwAR0eSI0gya5ERovl1C1Fphv2ZjnXGuKUalA378VWcZjoCj4NiUD7Pw6BDS0)

Hua Cheng is not the reward for Xie Lian's suffering. Hua Cheng suffered because Xie Lian suffered after all. Xie Lian was just lucky that someone....loved him that much.
There is no grand amazing world altering moral lesson at the end of TGCF, though some may say staying on the path of good and righteousness no matter what evil comes your way. However, in truth, Xie Lian stayed good because he couldn't bear to be evil. Hurting people has only ever hurt him. The way he so deeply regrets what he did in the past, it shames him because seeing his enemies suffer would have never brought him satisfaction. The same way Bai Wuxiang had to keep finding new enemies to fight because revenge doesn't make the pain go away and won't bring back what was lost. It's not a revelation that revenge is bad or a waste of time, but that it won't change how broken you are inside.
Xie Lian stayed true to himself but the reason he's so happy at the end of TGCF is not because of that. Hua Cheng would love him no matter what he did after all, and Hua Cheng knew Xie Lian so well, right down to the worst he was capable of, he knew Xie Lian would never hurt people, but it ended up boiling down to Hua Cheng choosing Xie Lian over and over again. Through the pain and suffering and sorrow. After everything, Xie Lian was just lucky.
It's painful, knowing that that's exactly how life works. Xie Lian was lucky that there was someone willing to fight for him and by his side for 800 years. Xie Lian was loved and adored the way everyone deserves to be loved and adored. A home was created for him and his pain did not feel meaningless at the end.
But what about Qi Rong? The neglected child who didn't get his happily ever after, except in headcanons? He didn't ask to have bad adults that never corrected him. He didn't ask to.crave attention so much that he'd rather be tortured than ignored.
What about He Xuan who lost everything for something that was never his fault? Getting revenge didn't get that back, it just made him lose more. Where is the home and happiness that He Xuan deserves once and for all?
What about Bai Wuxiang..... The version of Xie Lian that never got a Hua Cheng. That just kept suffering till he went mad.
What about Shi Qingxuan who had luck for majority of his life but will now live and die in insignificance, once again through no fault of his own. Or is he at fault for never asking his brother how he took care of the problem?
What about Ling Wen who loved and killed but never stopped loving. Who went to great lengths to revive her lover just to lose it all. What about Ling Wen who achieved so much but has lost one of her best friends and won't get the one she loves?
Unlucky. That's just it. Things didn't work out for them.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you're evil or good, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. Not all bad guys 'reap the consequences of their actions'. Not all good guys get a happy ending. Xie Lian was lucky, and I'm so happy for him. But every time I remember the others....it brings me to tears.

There’s something very tragic about the first king of Yong’an, Lang Ying that I feel both reflects Xie Lian in his almost-corruption era and also serves as a lesson for Xie Lian during his second banishment era.
Lang Ying loses his wife and young son to the drought in the city of Yong’an, only to be faced with the cruelty of the Xianle court who would rather preserve themselves and their status than help their suffering citizens. Xie Lian is the only noble to help him (by preventing Qi Rong from arresting him for stealing coins from a fountain, offering the man water, helping him bury his son, and then offering him his priceless pearl earrings that Xie Lian had used in the ill-fated Lantern Festival parade), and in return Lang Ying leads the Yong’an refugees in overthrowing the nation of Xianle and installing the nation of Yong’an over its ashes, the drought long over. In this ironic twist, Xie Lian breaking with the Xianle nobles to save Lang Ying’s life caused Xie Lian to lose his kingdom and loved ones, reversing their positions from beloved prince and impoverished commoner to beloved king and banished commoner. Now, they’ve both experienced a mirrored tragedy, though with different causes.
You’d think this would be a story of a man getting his due after experiencing injustice at the hands of the precious kingdom’s rulers, but no. Lang Ying is not satisfied with this takeover; he feels guilty. When Xie Lian goes to kill him, he still has the red pearl earring Xie Lian gave him. He tells Xie Lian that he always wanted to thank him for having given it to him, even if the help had come too late. This is also not the story of a man exacting vengeance for having his kindness repayed with “treachery.” Yes, Xie Lian in that moment was caught up in how Lang Ying seemed to have lived a “good life” and died relatively peacefully, but in later refusing to demolish the original city of Yong’an after realizing the error of following resentment, I feel like Xie Lian was at least partially influenced by Lang Ying’s death.
Lang Ying became king of a new kingdom, but he never got his wife and son back. In fact, his unwillingness to move on from the past, his regrets and fears and resentment, led to him (willingly!) being infected by the Human Face Disease. Yet on some level, he knew his thirst for vengeance—particularly in destroying the life of the one man who tried to help him—led to him being puppeteered by an even greater monster and having to forsake the part of him that wanted to repay a young man’s kindness. He didn’t die a proud king; he died a broken man filled with regrets. Xie Lian could have very well followed this same path: never releasing his regrets and resentment of what led to the fall of Xianle, always chasing those former pleasant memories by disgracing your morals in the present, and eventually being deposed by a victim of his actions. He consciously chooses not to.
Xie Lian is able to learn the lesson Lang Ying wasn’t given the chance to, and in doing so, he breaks out of the cycle of vengeance that Jun Wu was attempting to manipulate him into. I feel like his interactions and history with Lang Ying, as a result, would be good sources of heavy reflection and inspiration for his actions in his second banishment and third ascension.

Names of Devotion
Part1 Part2 Part3
Hua Cheng loves Xie Lian. It's a universal fact. As true as the sun rising in the east. But...was the love always same? Unchanging? I don't think so. His love and devotion has also changed with time. I want to write how his love evolved during different stages of his life.
Hong Hong'er:-
Before Xie Lian's 1st Ascension :-
Hong'er was an abused, lonely child. He didn't even have a formal name at the age of ten. His only source of warmth his mother died while he was still a little kid. His father was neglectful if not outright abusive. His stepmother abused him physically and verbally. Kids beat him and called names. To him the whole world is a purgatory and everyone is an enemy.
[The‌ ‌kids‌ ‌by‌ ‌the‌ ‌door‌ ‌teased,‌ ‌“Hey‌ ‌ugly‌ ‌monster,‌ ‌you‌ ‌sleeping‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌shrine‌ ‌again‌ ‌tonight?‌ ‌Better‌ watch‌ ‌out,‌ ‌that‌ ‌‘mom’‌ ‌of‌ ‌yours’‌ ‌gonna‌ ‌beat‌ ‌the‌ ‌living‌ ‌hell‌ ‌out of ‌you‌ ‌when‌ ‌you‌ ‌get‌ ‌home!”‌ ‌
Xie‌ ‌Lian‌ ‌frowned.‌ ‌Under‌ ‌the‌ ‌wrapped‌ ‌bandages,‌ ‌the‌ ‌boy’s‌ ‌one‌ ‌eye‌ ‌flashed‌ ‌with‌ ‌anger,‌ ‌he‌ ‌raised‌ ‌his‌ ‌fists‌ ‌and‌ ‌yelled,‌ ‌“I‌ ‌don’t‌ ‌have‌ ‌a‌ ‌home!!‌ ‌I‌ ‌don’t‌ ‌have‌ ‌a‌ ‌mom!‌ ‌She’s‌ ‌not‌ ‌my‌ mom!‌ ‌Get‌ ‌out!‌ ‌Get‌ ‌out!‌ ‌Keep‌ ‌talking‌ ‌and‌ ‌I’m‌ ‌gonna‌ ‌beat‌ ‌the‌ ‌crap‌ ‌outta‌ ‌you!”‌ ‌
Yet‌ ‌the‌ ‌group‌ ‌of‌ ‌kids‌ ‌couldn’t‌ ‌care‌ ‌less.‌ ‌They‌ ‌stuck‌ ‌out‌ ‌their‌ ‌tongues‌ ‌and‌ ‌challenged,‌ ‌“You‌ ‌dare?‌ ‌Careful‌ ‌we‌ ‌might‌ ‌just‌ ‌tell‌ ‌on‌ ‌your‌ ‌dad‌ ‌again‌ ‌and‌ ‌let‌ ‌him‌ ‌teach‌ ‌you‌ ‌a‌ ‌lesson.”‌ ‌
Some‌ ‌raised‌ ‌their‌ ‌brows‌ ‌and‌ ‌sneered,‌ ‌“Oh‌ ‌right,‌ ‌you‌ ‌don’t‌ ‌have‌ ‌a‌ ‌mom,‌ ‌because‌ ‌your‌ ‌mom‌ ‌didn’t‌ ‌want‌ ‌you.‌ ‌You‌ ‌don’t‌ ‌have‌ ‌a‌ ‌home,‌ ‌because‌ ‌your‌ ‌family‌ ‌doesn’t‌ ‌want‌ ‌anything‌ ‌to‌ ‌do‌ ‌with‌ ‌you.‌ ‌That’s‌ ‌why‌ ‌you‌ ‌can‌ ‌only‌ ‌sleep‌ ‌in‌ ‌this‌ ‌pitiful‌ ‌shrine...”‌ ‌] ch73
Is it any wonder that he wanted to kill himself and drag the whole world with him? So he decided jump off a wall during the God Pleaseing Parade and ruin it. So that he can drag Xian Le with him. Yet he ended up getting distracted by the Taizi Dianxia, and fall from the wall. But he didn't die Dianxia saved him.
Then Taizi Dianxia hold him while doing the parade, and told him not to be afraid he would protect him.
To xl it meant nothing. Just a child he saved in passing. Yet to Hong'er it was the first act of kindness someone directed toward him. It was the drop of water after a lifetime of draught.
Even though xl had only shown him the bare minimum of kindness he lapped it up like a blind man seeing the first ray of sunlight. He saw with his own eyes how xl bear all the scolding for almost ruining the parade just to save his life, yet he didn't regret saving him. For the first time someone thought that his life is worth something.
Once again, xl saved his life from Qi Rong and took him to Mount Taicang. Those few hours must have been the happiest and the most hopeful hours in his short human life. He must have been so happy that there was someone in this world who wanted him. Now he didn't have to live in that house where nobody wanted him instead he would live with his hero.
But alas! It didn't last long.
As soon as he went there, xl's house cut on fire and evil things attacked him. He didn't understand what was happening, yet a man said it was all his fault. He was a star of misfortune for himself and those close to him. He will ruin everything he touch. In a moment all those hopeful dreams of living with his hero vanished in smoke.
He didn't understand why it always happened to him. Why?! What wrong did he do? He was not a monster! Why everyone hated him so much? What was wrong with touching him? He was not toxic! That man was lying!
Wasn't he?
While everyone trying not to touch him as if he was something untouchable, his hero held him in his arms and told him it was not his fault. He was not anything bad. It was first time after his mother's death someone hugged him and told him 'everything will be okay'.
[Before‌ ‌he‌ ‌even‌ ‌finished,‌ ‌there‌ ‌was‌ ‌a‌ ‌loud‌ ‌scream,‌ ‌and‌ ‌Hong‌ ‌Hong-Er‌ ‌leapt‌ ‌to‌ ‌his‌ ‌feet,‌ ‌running‌ ‌towards‌ ‌Guoshi‌ ‌to‌ ‌headbutt‌ ‌him.‌ ‌His‌ ‌voice‌ ‌was‌ ‌tender,‌ ‌but‌ ‌his‌ ‌screams‌ ‌were‌ ‌filled‌ ‌with‌ ‌rage,‌ ‌as‌ ‌if‌ ‌his‌ ‌heart‌ ‌was‌ ‌filled‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌brim‌ ‌with‌ ‌unspeakable‌ ‌pain‌ ‌and‌ ‌anguish,‌ ‌making‌ ‌many‌ ‌shiver.‌ ‌That‌ ‌young‌ ‌child‌ ‌was‌ ‌covered‌ ‌in‌ ‌injuries,‌ ‌yet‌ ‌he‌ ‌yanked‌ ‌and‌ ‌struck‌ ‌like‌ ‌a‌ ‌red-eyed‌ ‌rabid‌ ‌dog,‌ ‌violent‌ ‌and‌ ‌aggressive.‌ ‌] ch67
[Seeing‌ ‌that‌ ‌everyone‌ ‌was‌ ‌avoiding‌ ‌him‌ ‌like‌ ‌he‌ ‌was‌ ‌a‌ ‌poisonous‌ ‌snake,‌ ‌that‌ ‌child‌ ‌was‌ ‌shaken‌ ‌and‌ ‌started‌ ‌thrashing‌ ‌even‌ ‌harder,‌ ‌biting‌ ‌and‌ ‌screaming,‌ ‌“I’m‌ ‌not!I’M‌ ‌NOT!!‌ ‌I’M‌ ‌NOT!!!!”‌ ‌] ch67
[Suddenly,‌ ‌a‌ ‌pair‌ ‌of‌ ‌arms‌ ‌wrapped‌ ‌him‌ ‌around‌ ‌the‌ ‌waist,‌ ‌encircling‌ ‌his‌ ‌small‌ ‌form.‌ ‌A‌ ‌voice‌ ‌came‌ ‌from‌ ‌above‌ ‌his‌ ‌head,‌ ‌“You’re‌ ‌not.‌ ‌I‌ ‌know‌ ‌you’re‌ ‌not.‌ ‌Don’t‌ ‌cry,‌ ‌now.‌ ‌I‌ ‌know‌ ‌you’re‌ ‌not.”‌ ‌] ch67
The kid who hadn't cried when his ribs, hands, legs were broken wailed in despair. Because he knew nothing would be okay. He would always be alone. He was a freak, a misfortune, who ruin everything. And he could never live with his saviour. Because he couldn't ruin him, no matter what.
To Hong'er Xie Lian was his saviour, his hero. Someone to respect and worship........, but from afar.
(To be continued......)
I meant to write a single post. But somehow I ended up writing the book from Hua Cheng's experience. And I'm going to post all those things in separate posts. The next one will be during the war.

Ranking Xie Lian’s Kids By How Likely They are to Call Him Dad
1. Guzi: Still thinks Qi Rong is his dad, which makes Xie Lian an uncle of sorts 0/10
2. Pei Su: Respects Xie Lian way more than he does Pei Ming, despite the latter’s desperate attempts to be his “cool dad”. Still, ultimately sees Xie Lian more as like a cool mentor rather than a father. Would give him a #1 Dad Mug in front of Pei Ming just to be a bitch, though. 3/10
3. Lang Ying (the real one): Seems rather terrified of everyone, and they got off to a rocky start (with his face giving Xie Lian a panic attack) and a rockier finish with the whole ... revenge thing. Still Xie Lian’s probably the nicest an adult’s been to this poor little dude in 700+ years, 4/10
4. Lang Ying (Huahua version): No. -100/10
5. Lang Ying (Jun Wu version): Always up for adding another creepy dimension to his relationship to Xie Lian, 8/10 and I feel unclean
6. Ban Yue: He was canonically thinking about adopting her, and literally got trampled to death trying to save her. She based her decision to end Ban Yue Kingdom and let herself be tortured to appease their ghosts off Xie Lian’s entire life philosophy. Tragic, noble father+daughter duo of the year,. 9/10 bc they’re both too traumatized to make the first move in addressing the other as family
7. Lang Qianqiu: 100% accidentally called Fang Xin Guoshi “dad” during a lesson; it was incredibly embarrassing. Has 1000% sure accidentally called Xie Lian “dad” during a post-canon meeting in heaven, which was even more embarrassing. 10/10
