Initial Post for English Language Fellows Program
Dear Friends - This is my first post as I prepare for an academic year as a Writing instructor in Indonesia. The job starts on Sept. 1, so this is really just practice. I'm going on the US Dept. of State's English Language Fellows Program. I hope to be reporting on my further preparations, as well as my travel, my settling in at the State University of Malang, in Java, as well as my life and work there, and travels in Indonesia, and beyond. Who knows what's going to happen? Join me on the adventure!! - Y.S. Fing/Will

Sometimes it feels like I’m constantly in the hospital, and when I’m not, my pager is going off non-stop. This winter, my first as a hematology / oncology fellow, was definitely **stressful** but I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m learning a lot about cancer, and I’m also learning a lot about time management. Yes, there was a lot of heavy sighs and complaining, but I’m a big believer is airing my concerns and frustrations, and staying balanced 🧘🏾‍♀️ . Anyway, I got this shirt which I love. It is very fitting because it’s been my mantra 😂 • • • #Icant #imoncall #oncall #medlife #fellowlife #lifeofafellow #medicine #medschool #residency #grind #pager #hemeonc #hemeoncfellow #cancer #cantstopwontstop https://www.instagram.com/p/BtQ9aR6h8or/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ffj4zrj6ew08

54 Teachers in the city of Ihosy and the surrounding rural areas came together to practice active English, drama, vocab & phonics strategies, teaching six word stories and the four corner vocabulary activity on culturally relevant themes for their students lives! It was great to collaborate with and teach with Malagasy Teachers,’who also led actvities for their colleagues that they learned in the English Symposium this past May! @elprograms @usembmada #lifeofafellow #teachabroad #madagascar #teacher #teachersofinstagram #teacherlife (at Ihosy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Wo2UIgDfp/?igshid=1fsb0ifxsgwjr

Creating student choices in the classroom using Question 123 How to get all students speaking and engaged in your class? Use this Protocol with limited resources for Speaking Skills. Have students think and share their answers. 1. Give a question; “ What are you thinking about?” 2. Give the beginning of an answer: “ I’m thinking about...” 3. Write student responses on the board. 4. Practice Question 123 as a whole class first, then in Pairs. 5. Everyone will feel more confident and passionate about their speaking skills guaranteed! #socialemotionallearning #day131 #Madagascar #fellowPDO #fellowmidyear #lifeofafellow #fellowfriday #traveltuesday #fellowfirsts #fellowimpact #myclassroom #DearFutureFellow #fellowfriends #ELPalumni #ELFontheroad #elpstaff #ELSpecialist #fellow50h (at Tananarivo) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxv_UUrg2bc/?igshid=e93317yxa1ln

Teaching is definitely an art. It’s an art because the same way an artist returns to a canvas over numerous hours, days, weeks and possibly months, a teacher returns to the canvas of his or her class, and asks him or herself “what am I doing to support my students in the best way possible?” It takes a certain degree of looking at oneself objectively, which is challenging because we all subjectively want to feel successful in everything we do, but this is impossible. We only learn through trials, challenges and errors. No one learned how to do something well through being perfect constantly, at least no one that I know. Teaching is like paying it forward. The benefit is not for you, the benefit is for the people you work with and for society. I am paid every day that I can make someone smile and be told they learned something new in my presence. If the teaching and student connection of the learning relationship is working properly, students are teaching each other and the teacher is continuously learning in the process as well. We are here to put positive energy into the world and into the lives of each other in any way that we can serve use any of the skills that we have been given. I hope to be able to tell my students the same thing whenever, however, wherever and in whatever way possible. #lifeofafellow #alumni @elprograms https://www.instagram.com/p/CAsMg0vg0pj/?igshid=19nj8mn63dz7i

Today I felt very lucky to have an opportunity to teach around 25 Egyptian teachers about how to do virtual teaching tours with their classes. We’re brainstorming ways that we can make our students engaged and interested in learning how to question. Learning how to find answers may help you in school, but learning how to create your own questions will help you in life. The foundation of learning is our curiosity and our excitement to discover the world. We are using flipgrid to have students share their learning after they’ve explored and had practice time to share and listen to what their classmates have learned during the virtual tour. Today’s tour was of the #sandiego #Zoo! #westillteach #lifeofafellow #alumni @elprograms #flipgrid Thank you Natasha Argawal for all your feeback, inspiration and encouragment! https://www.instagram.com/p/CAeYGZSA2Mx/?igshid=lt1g7khtlpnx

A day of teaching online via Zoom to students in Mauritius and also in Turkey. It went well, but it’s a lot of time on the Internet. But if you feel you’re serving in someway a higher purpose than only your life and your interests, it seems more worth it.!#lifeofafellow #allumni #pranayama The best moment during my week was speaking and listening to students around the world and connecting with friends. The worst moment was being in front of a screen basically all day long. What I’m looking forward to most during this weekend is a yoga class I’m hoping to teach on Saturday at 11 AM New York time! feel free to join the link is http://tinyurl.com/fellowyoga https://www.instagram.com/p/B_oIJl-gk4p/?igshid=1bcik8ecochfx

Do you want to integrate the 4 skills in English and in the fuse joy in your classroom try out this activity, it works for any age!
1: Choose one text or multiple texts, put them on different desks.
2. Divide the class into equal groups.
3. For one minute, one student goes to the text, reads it & memorizes a small part and goes to speak what they read to another partner ,who will write it down.
4. After one minute, teacher says switch, the relay runner reading speaker becomes the writer and the writer becomes the relay reading runner speaker.
5. After all groups have finished doing their transcriptions, they are given the actual text and compare where they had errors in writing, spelling and punctuation. The teacher can walk around to compare what kinds of common mistakes students are making.
