Honestly the funniest thing about Haruka's idol story line in y5 (and dont any of you come at me with the You're Lessening Mirei's Evil Heinous Actions shit, I know she was the antagonist, blah blah) is the fact that as far as traineeships go Haruka's.... wasn't all that unusual- Living on your own away from your parents? Par the course. Having older figures be unduly harsh about your talent/looks? Also par the course. Insane schedules? Creepy fans? Yep. In fact Haruka is older than a lot of people are when they start traineeships nowadays... Like that aspect of the game could have been played up for even more dramatic value than it was.

gloomy I can't stress enough how bad I am at this. once we got past stats and I had to actually come up with real character things it was awful. dragged kicking and screaming through character creation. also I'm realizing as I type this how little I still have in mind for this character bc I never even decided what gender they are. we've been referring to them interchangeably as "my new cringfail losergirl oc" and "my new weird little guy"

Quirks:

Orson has the habit of running his tongue over the front of his teeth and it looks weird but he refuses to stop.

He’s bisexual. When Sophie came to sit at his table with Jensi, his behavior did not change. He is drooly whether or not a girl is around. Because he is constantly surrounded by hot guys. <- his besties

There’s a scar on his thigh from falling out of a tree. He used to climb all the time but nowadays dedicates his time to more important things, like writing bad poetry in his favorite blue sparkly notebook (it matches his eyes)

His favorite things are: boobries, his little brother (who hasn’t manifested and isn’t expected to), boobs, learning about humans and their culture (unfortunately, no accessible info on the humans exists since before Atlantis sinks, which makes it very outdated and fairly inaccurate), experimenting with hairstyles (he hasn’t gotten far past “ponytail” unfortunately), the snapping, carnivorous sort of plants, writing and reading poetry, and watermelon flavored air.

He also likes visiting Ancients to see what they know about humans, and also just to hang out. He finds them interesting and funny, and they find him charming and silly.

He collects prattles pins like mad, but doesn’t care about the rare ones. He just collects the ones he likes the most. He has like 50 boobrie pins, as well as many other birds. He loves birds. He would love to be a bird.

Backstory:

His parents are both talentless, and his grandparents were a bad match with only one of them having an ability. So no one really expected him to manifest— when he did, his parents threw a whole celebration.

He’s experienced the prejudice that comes from having working class parents and also the euphoria and pride that comes from manifesting unexpectedly

As a result, he understands that matchmaking and “special abilities” are a dumb thing to construct a society around. 

The expectation to succeed as the only one with an ability since his grandma pushes him into constant stress, studying, etc.

His little brother isn’t expected to manifest as his window shrinks, which really just adds to his stress as his parents place more and more on his shoulders— basically to redeem the whole family. Orson is clearly the favorite and it grates on his brother. They haven’t been as close since Orson manifested.

Efforts to improve his schoolwork also includes pushing himself past his limits with his conjuring, trying to conjure too-large objects or too many at a time, despite not being super powerful. He’s perfectly average at conjuring and it bothers him, especially as Jensi goes to sit with Sophie instead of him, and then is dropped later. Their group of powerful friends irks him with the knowledge that they will never even think of him or his friends as people to accept, even Jensi.

It also hurts when Jensi immediately tries to leave their friends for Sophie, Dex, and Marella as soon as he gets the chance. Jensi is embarrassed of them, and as someone who has been embarrassed over everything in his life (his parents, his hair, his freckles, his grandparents’ bad match status, etc) he doesn’t understand why.

Despite all this, he tries super hard to remain positive. He likes being around his friends, who are all very fun and cool when new people are not there. They often have ethics debates in very chilled out language. If the Drooly Boys had weed they’d be unstoppable honestly. He doesn’t like Sophie and her friends (esp the Vackers—Dex wasn’t alone in this) on a personal level but appreciates what they’re trying to do. 

He has hope that things will change, even when Team Valiant is established and it’s still all people with powerful abilities instead of any Talentless, twins, etc who could provide perspective on what the Neverseen are doing. He clings to the knowledge that Dex is there, who knows bad match shaming, unmanifested pressure, and multiple birth prejudice. 

Personality:

Tends to interrupt people when they’re talking just because he had a thought. Will then apologize and let them talk, and then do it again.

Will sacrifice his time and energy to be around people, helping his brother, parents, and friends (as well as his Ancient friends) until he shuts down/burns out and has to recharge in his bedroom for a few days.

He has a dry sort of humor that a lot of people tend not to pick up on. They take him seriously, which can make him appear either mean or stupid when he is neither of those things.

Likes to make up puzzles in his head and give them to his friends to solve. Often, he will become so impatient he’ll start giving them clues that are basically just the answers.

He avoids making snap judgements of people, since that so often is used against him and his friends.

Afterthought:

That's all! Hope you like him :] he's both a funny concept and a serious one, since he is the opposite of what he's presented as in the series and also fits into what characters like Dex, Marella, Tam, and Linh have exposed about the flawed nature of the Lost Cities. Orson holds a hurt in him that comes the world around him, but he also carries the hope that the world can be changed for the better. Despite this, he's not in a position to be a part of that change the way Jensi is starting to, and he doesn't want to-- he has enough pressure with his schoolwork and parental expectations.
