BOAT BOYS ARE SEPERATED!?! *i am shot with bullets

Yep 🥲 they had a thing during the year Etho spent on an exchange with the university that Joel and a few other familiar faces attended. I'm gonna put the details below the cut in case anyone doesn't want to know, especially given that you didn't outright ask, but for anyone who's curious:

They meet through Grian, who met Etho through Mumbo, who's in the engineering program that's hosting the exchange. It starts off casual—literally on the same night they meet—which is already a bad sign because Etho doesn't really do casual and even from that first night, the other guys are constantly taking the mick out of Joel for his lifelong crush on a girl named Lizzie.

It's really more of a situationship than a relationship (though Joel does take Etho out on a stupid touristy boat ride where they accidentally end up on one of those two-person pedal boats with "The Relation" stamped across the side). It's sort of accidentally established as something to keep quiet very early on, and both of them are just trying to respect what they think is the other person's wishes to not tell any of their friends because obviously it's no big deal, right?

Unfortunately Joel is as chronically affectionate as he is abrasive and as much as Etho presents himself as aloof they're both very very attached to each other even if they both think it's just casual/physical. Joel thinks Etho's really a private person and doesn't need their nosy friends getting up in his business, plus he doesn't need anyone thinking that he's obsessed with Etho, or anything, especially when Etho is inevitably going to leave anyway.

Etho is a private person who doesn't really want their nosy friends being nosy, but he's also a bit insecure since it seems like Joel is a lot more experienced in relationships than he is, and with the other guys constantly teasing Joel about Lizzie, he doesn't want to add fuel to the fire. But as his program's end approaches, and he and Joel get closer, every next not-date and hookup feeling less and less casual, Etho starts to get bad ideas like staying, though it kind of freaks him out that he's even considering it. 

Then, out of the blue, Joel tells him that they should stop all of it, because Lizzie is coming back, and she's actually asked him out for a change. Etho is upset, more at himself for getting carried away on a pointless venture, and pretends (badly) that he's happy for them, and then packs all his things and moves back to Canada as fast as he can without saying goodbye.

Really it's all a classic miscommunication debacle + emotional constipation + a bit of right-person-wrong-time/circumstances. And also very much not Lizzie's fault she has done literally nothing wrong. In this world they probably wouldn't have worked out anyway, but a lot of the mess could have been avoided if they maybe had a single conversation about what they were doing, but they'll get to that conversation eventually, I just need to put them in situations ;)

What is the retirement au?

Hello, thanks for asking!

The Early Retirement AU is the setting of a fic I'm writing, in which a mid-thirties Etho is let go from his engineering job of eight-or-so years and decides to just retire early instead of looking for new work, and follows him trying to figure out what he really wants from life now that he has more time on his hands.

The fic Oh, brother! that I posted recently is a part of this AU as well and details specifically his relationship with Gem, whose family took him in when his parents died when they were kids.

It's a Cleo/Etho fic at the end of the day, but my intention is to emphasize his friendships as well (specifically with Bdubs and Team TIES, among others!), and his past relationships from his graduate research exchange to London ten years prior will come back to bite him as well (the only thing i like better than boat boys being together is them being separated and unwell about it).

Still ironing out some details as I write, but I'm very excited to share about this little au with anyone who's interested, and I can't wait to have the fic written up for people to read.

hi just wanted you to know that my friend and i are going absolutely feral about your art, it is stunning and so well done and the character designs are PERFECT

the neck kisses and the way etho is smirking a bit and the lightning looking scar and the light from the window it’s all just so beautiful, it reminds me so much of some of my fave fics of them

and the cletho one… oh the cletho one WAAAA the two body types that are both so perfect and fit together so well, the way they are leaning into each other and the snakes wrapping around and yet he doesn’t mind, it’s all sooo so wonderful

and then on top of everything else, your rendering and anatomy is incredible, i keep staring at the hands and the muscles beneath the shoulders and i’m like, this is black magic how does someone have this much talent? but you do and it’s awesome

anyways, uh you have reached your target audience (regardless of if you had one in mind or not) so thank you so much for sharing your art

Oh em gee ive FOUND YOU!

ok that sounded creepy.

Im literally… so… obsessed. So obssessed. With your work. I read your gemtho sibling fic… where do i even start??? The writing… so talented? The description was on POINT without being too showy and jacked with unnecessary words. I have an image in my head for what’s happening the whole time, even without the pictures! And… the pictures. Wait wait more about the writing iteslef first.

In conveys their relationship SO SO SOOOO PERFECTLYYYYYY GAHH!!!!!!!!! The little details? I LEGITAMATELY found myself belly laughing at various parts, which i rarely do, and when I wasnt laughing I was smiling and rocking back and forth like a little kid. Some of the little sentances… HOW DO YOU WRITE THEM SO WELL??? I cant even express how I feel about this. The storyline was great, and i LOVE the idea, but an idea is nothing without a good excecution, and this excecution is SPOTLESS.

From that first picture, i knew i was in love with your style. Little gem? ADORABLE!!! Now, ive said this on ao3 a while ago, but I mean every word of it still. Ive never “had a crush” on anyone in my LIFE, people are ugly and weird lol. Im basically a hermit irl. But I think I fell in love with Etho MINIMUM three times in your art stlye. That whole scene with Beef was so. Perfect. It conveys everything SO perfectly. GAHH!!!! I can just picture them looking at gem dumbfounded with pizza in their mouths, then etho getting tackled and being so USED to gettign tackled that his only comment is “Hey Gem” I LOVE THAT SO FREAKING MUCH!!!!!

Gem calling him her “emotionally stunted big brother” nearly broke my heart, and when Etho cried I nearly started with him. The first time reading the fic i was in tears of pure joy all the way through. OMG Im SO IN LOVE WITH THIS!!!!

Am I being creepy? Im sorry lol!!! I cant help myself i’ve never felt so strongly about anything in my life (which sounds wild… but i dont show emotions irl very often so trust me its more true than it sounds)

And thank you for your kind words about my art, and my take on Etho. He's very quickly become one of my favorites to draw, and I'm so glad you pointed out the one with Beef holding him like a cat, that's probably my favorite of the bunch for that fic.
