      Chirping birds woke you up well before your 7am meeting time with Tommy. Never a morning person, you groaned while covering your face with your pillow. You tossed and turned until you couldn’t stand it anymore. You dramatically uncovered your face and threw your pillow in the direction of the chirping. Fucking birds. Rolling to the edge of the bed you finally forced yourself to sit up and face the day. The only consolation for your far too early wake up call was that you were seeing Tommy today. A large smile split your face when you thought of your best friend and you were excited to see him. Even though you had only seen him hours before, you missed him and begged the clock to move faster towards seven. As much as you relied on each other, you both didn’t see each other as much as you would like. Tommy was a busy man who made time for few. You were one of the lucky ones and you only saw him once or twice a week. 

       You finally forced yourself out of your warm bed, lazily strolling towards your kitchen in search of breakfast. You took your time not feeling like moving fast so early. Eventually, it was time to get dressed and leave so you quickly changed and headed out the door. 

       It was summertime in Birmingham which meant you could wear dresses outside and not freeze to death. You reveled in the rare sunshine warming your cheeks and sighed in contentment while making the short walk to the betting shop. Much to your disappointment you quickly came upon the shop which would force you to swap the sunshine for the dull atmosphere it held. Before you had the chance to go in you heard someone calling your name behind you. The first thing you noticed was the clear blue eyes of your best friend. A cheeky smirk crossed your face as Tommy approached you. 

     “My my is the Thomas Shelby running late?” you giggled out. “I’m almost offended because you’re never late for anything.”

      He rolled his eyes as he planted a quick kiss to your cheek. You wondered if it was the sun or his plump lips that made the skin of your cheek heat up. You shook your head to rid yourself of such a ludicrous thought and smiled brightly at him. Tommy lit a cigarette before pointing it at you. 

      “I’ll have you know I was not late Y/N. I was pulling the car around back for Curly to fill up with Petrol. I would never be late for anything involving my best girl,” Tommy said with a lazy smirk on his face. 

       You were immediately excited by his words. It wasn’t often you left Small Health and it was even rarer when you left Small Health with Tommy. You knew today was going to be a good day. You were practically bouncing with your excitement and beaming like a small child on Christmas. As he grabbed your hand to lead you to his car you couldn’t stop the barrage of questions pouring out of your lips. 

        “Where are we going, Tommy? Are we going to the country? Are we going to London?” You said eagerly shaking your intertwined hands back and forth. Tommy swore you were both fifteen again and about to sneak off on your first trip outside of Small Health together. He smiled fondly at the memory. 

        “If we go to the country can I drive the car? Oh it’s so nice out we should have a picnic! Maybe we could ride the horses and visit the Lees and-”

      “Y/n! Lord woman calm down. I’m not telling you where we are going until we get there, now please get in the car,” Tommy said while opening your car door. 

     “Fine but I’m going to bother you the whole way there Thomas,” you chuckled manically.

       About an hour had passed driving through the lush countryside and you were barely quiet the entire time. You had to make the most of the rare alone time with Tommy. He only got mad at you once when you started worrying over the large bruise covering part of his left eye. Your pouty lips and puppy dog eyes made him forgive you rather quickly. Tommy always had a hard time staying mad at you. Time passed too fast for your liking when you finally felt the car roll to a stop. You would’ve been perfectly content driving and chatting Tommy’s ear off for the rest of the day. Despite this, you were excited to see a stable off in the distance. You almost loved horses as much as Tommy did. 

      “Are we riding today Tommy?” you questioned him happily. 

         His only reply was the cryptic smirk he sent your way before he walked to your side of the car and helped you out. Remaining silent he grabbed your hand and pulled you towards the stable. Tommy rubbed his thumb on the back of your hand to calm you down. He always did that when you were nervous or excited because you had very strong emotions that pulled you all over the place. Tommy only let go of your hand to push open the stable doors. Once you were inside you were overwhelmed with the sight of the many beautiful horses. One large black stallion in particular caught your eye. You dropped Tommy’s hand in order to move closer to it. He truly was beautiful and you couldn’t resist patting his nose. Tommy smiled softly as he watched you whispering to his horse. You were so enamored with the stallion you jumped when Tommy began speaking behind you. You cursed Tommy under your breath for scarring you. 

      “His name is Apollo,” Tommy laughed as you swatted his arm, “the owner of this stable is a good friend of mine and has been training him up for a few months now. He’ll be racing at the Derby tomorrow. James Burton’s horse will also be racing in the same Derby. I’m sure you can see where this is going Y/N.”

       You remained quiet as you pondered Tommy’s words. You knew you’d do anything for him and you were very curious to see what he planned for you. 

      “What do you need me to do Tommy? I’m ready to do whatever it takes,” you said softly. 

         Tommy sighed sadly in response, “Aye, that’s what I’m afraid of Y/N. I shouldn’t have brought you into this. It would have been better if you didn’t know, but I don’t know what else to do.”

        You were shocked to see the genuine sadness in his eyes. He hadn’t looked so sad since he was a boy. Tommy told you almost everything but he always hid the bad parts from you. He never wanted you to see him falter and always tried to protect you from what he didn’t want you to see. You knew the situation was grave when you saw how he looked at you. 

       “James Burton will not be leaving the race alive,” Tommy said slowly. “He is a liability and he is getting far too confident. He needs to be disposed of quickly and quietly. As much as I don’t like it you will distract him while the rest of the boys dispatch his men. There are a few private boxes at this track, you are to take him there and keep him preoccupied with the race. There is a door behind each bar in the boxes, I will be waiting there and I will kill him when the time is right. Do you understand?”

       “Tommy, wouldn’t it make more sense if I were to do it? I mean it would be so easy to carry a small gun in my purse and spring it on him when he least expects it. What if he hears you come in when you open the door and you get hurt? I really think it would be best if you let me-”

     Tommy immediately cut you off before you could finish. You could see the fury practically rolling off his body which scared you a bit. Tommy never got like this with you. 

        “Absolutely not Y/N. Have you gone fucking mad? I will not risk it. I will not risk you,” Tommy roared. 

      You were furious. You couldn’t believe Tommy was talking to you like this. Not one to hold back you turned your anger onto him. 

    “Why do you constantly underestimate me, Tommy? I am a far better shot than John, and hell I’m probably a better shot than you. Just because I am a woman doesn’t mean I’m not capable. Why did you ask me to help if you aren’t going to trust me, eh? You just want me to be some pretty damsel in distress and I don’t fucking like it. I’m not useless Thomas, why can’t you see that?” you seethed. 

        Tommy roughly ran both hands over his face before he threw himself down on a nearby stool. Your headstrong nature drove him mad sometimes and he wished you would just listen to him. He lit a cigarette and thought for a few minutes before speaking again. Meanwhile, you were glaring a hole into the side of his head. 

     “Love come sit by me, eh? I don’t want to fight with you, “ Tommy said while gently patting the stool next to him. 

     You tried to keep yourself from going over to him but you melted when he called you love. Tommy knew good and well that was one of your weaknesses. He never fought fair. You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms with an over exaggerated huff leaving your mouth. You forced yourself to stay cemented to where you stood. 

     “Please love, we never fight. Let’s not start now, eh?” 

      Damn him and his husky voice and pouty lips and puppy dog eyes you mentally cursed as you crossed the stable and sat down on the stool next to him. Refusing to let him win so easily, you dramatically crossed your arms over your chest before turning your back to him. You always forgave him quickly, but today you wanted to make him sweat. 

     “Y/N look at me, please. I need you to talk to me,” Tommy said. 

        Still, you refused to turn around and face him. Accepting the situation, Tommy began talking at your back. 

        “Love, I know what you’re capable of. You are one of the bravest people I know and I know you could easily handle Burton. I just don’t want you to ever know what it’s like to kill a man. It changes you. It makes you cold and bitter and I don’t want that for you. I want to keep you safe and I don’t want you to end up how I have. I’ve become a bad man. I kill men who look at me the wrong way and children are scared of me. I don’t want you to know what that’s like. Please Y/N don’t be angry at me” he pleaded with you.

      Tommy turned you to him when he heard you sniffle. His calloused thumb quickly wiped the tears falling from your eyes. It broke his heart when you cried and he never liked to be the reason for it. 

        “Please don’t cry, love. I’m sorry for upsetting you,” Tommy said softly while grabbing your hands and lightly running his thumbs across the back of them. You began to calm down and you finally looked Tommy in the eye. 

       “It’s not that Tommy. It just breaks my heart to hear you speak so lowly of yourself. You are the kindest and sweetest man I have ever known and I wish you could see yourself how I see you. I’m crying because I worry so much about you and thinking of you getting hurt makes me physically ill. I want to protect you too you stupid idiot,” You said while lightly punching his chest. 

       “Are we ok then Y/N? I want to make sure we are fine before tomorrow?” Tommy asked nervously while wiping the remaining tears from your cheeks.

     “Yes Thomas, we are ok. And yes Thomas I will follow your plan so stop worrying,” you rolled your eyes. 

         You could see him visibly relax and you giggled as he kissed the back of your hand while mumbling quiet thank yous. 

        “Oh, but Thomas?” You said with a cheeky smirk on your face “I’m going to need a new dress for tomorrow and I trust you can handle that for me.”

        Tommy rolled his eyes playfully at you, “Whatever you want love.”

Drake, Olivia, and Maxwell were seated in Liam's suite, faces open in shock as they pore over the contents of the anonymous delivery that Liam had received. All of them were just as perplexed as the king himself, his own face downcast to the floor, unwilling to even make eye contact as he tried to make sense of it himself.

Who could possibly know he was here? Were there people spying on him? Maybe he wasn't being as inconspicuous as he first thought?

“What are we going to do, Liam?” Drake says, his voice sounding far-away and muffled like he was underwater. The subsequent silence hinted of the king’s exhaustion.

After a long moment, they exchange a tense glance when they find his face devoid of all emotion, his eyes just as blank.

“At this point in time, Drake? No. I am half expecting this to be a complete ruse.”

At this time he was admittedly astonished he could feel anything at all. It was a complete miracle he had some semblance of a heart left. Ariel had all but destroyed it.

After all this leeway he was still a broken man, pining for his wife that he wasn't even certain would return to him.

Liam had gathered his entourage in his room as soon as he read the message. Bastien had appeared a few minutes after Liam had texted him and the others following shortly thereafter.

“Your Majesty…” Bastien starts, his posture and expression, for once, not that of his bodyguard, but that of a man who had seen his charge grow up into a respected and well-loved monarch, to a forlorn, man who had suffered through two years of a hellish nightmare.

“Yes, Bastien?”

Although Bastien’s posture was calmer and personal, his words still held respect and rectitude. “Permission to speak freely, sir?”

Liam gives a curt nod, waving at him in a casual gesture to continue.

“Over the course of your life I have seen you at your best but also your worst and over the past two years, the latter has been the most dominant. The cipher only gave us Moscow...it certainly didn’t give us anything else. Pardon my language, my king, but I’ll be damned if I see you spiral into yet another dark hole which I’m afraid you won’t recover from.”

Drake gives a long exhale as he sits down, levelling his gaze at Liam’s bodyguard.

“Bastien...aren't you worried that this is a trap?”

“In all my years of protecting King Father Constantine there was always the threat of correspondence being a trap, however, my gut is telling me that if we do not follow this lead we will be missing out on a chance to find the queen.”

Drake’s eye’s shift to his best friend, reading Liam’s expression and his heart clenches when he sees Liam flinch at the name of his wife. It amazed him how a few simple syllables could make the almost-always cool, indomitable King of Cordonia react as if he’d been punched in the stomach and shot in the chest all at once.

It’s quiet in the room, the last of Bastien’s words echoing in their ears until Olivia huffs, the sound of her fist connecting with the desk almost deafening in the thick silence.

“Enough of this nonsense! I’ve had to witness Liam become a shell of a man because of all this mess. He might not know what to do but I’ll be damned if I’m going to watch him slowly retreat into himself once more.”

Olivia pauses, taking a deep breath, shoulders heaving in exertion. Her face set in resolve, the corners of her lips lift up in a visceral smile.

“I will not sit idly by when the one clue we have been searching for three days appears right in front of us. This is our chance. You'll be a fool not to take it. I'll drag you there with my bare hands if it’s so inclined for me to do so.”

Liam glances up at Olivia, her slender form exhuming that fire he so admired about her. Her steely eyes pierce through him, almost as if she was trying to exchange some of that fire to him herself, to give him that push he needed.

For all intents and purposes, Olivia was right. This was solid evidence. Liam would only be an imbecile if he didn’t seize this opportunity. He would be quite an idiot if he didn’t take this information and grab onto it for dear life.

A few beats pass of stretched silence, the king’s fingers fiddling with his wedding band, his mind running a mile a minute.

The silence is almost too thick, the urge to fill the silence almost too unbearable. That is until Liam squares his shoulders, his posture settles into the regal, poised well-practiced disposition as if he was gearing himself up to enter into a room full of press and dignitaries.

Liam clears his throat as he stands, his expression set into a renewed vigor. The earlier despair nowhere to be seen. His eyes alight with the fire Olivia spurred in him moments before.

He glances around to all his friends, the numb ache his chest that was a common occurrence most days transitions into gratitude for each of them.

“I think you might be right, Olivia. Bastien.” Liam nods to each as he gives them each a smile of thanks.

Despite the verbal kick to the backside both rightly given by two of the people he trusted, Liam feels the fatigue settle in after the shock of the delivery and the resounding adrenaline stemming from that slowly ebbing away.

That too fades away as the clock chimes with its nightly reminder. “As much as I would love to go right now - it’s late. I believe we should all retire to bed and pick this up in the morning.”

It was a sore thing to admit, but the clear-mindedness a few hours of rest would grant everyone an advantage in the days ahead. They would need it.

He could not afford to lose focus now. He was so close. Years of training and trusting his instincts either with a tax reform put forth by the Royal Council told him that he was close. He had to believe that if nothing else.

Small, conciliary smiles slip onto his colleague’s faces as they slip silently out of the door, Bastien following behind and closing the door to leave Liam to his thoughts.

Once the door was securely shut, Liam’s face fell and he sighs heavily, slowly sinking to the bed, his hands moving up to his face to cover it as his shoulders sag in his growing exhaustion.

The burn behind his closed lids enlightening him into the ever-present pain that he hid from most public and private eyes. Had it always been there, or had it come just now? He suspected that it was the former. Perhaps he just didn’t notice it as much these days, so long he had gotten used to it.

Unable to bear it, Liam jumps up from his bed and begins pacing, his footsteps creating a soft thud against the carpet. Liam’s pulse races as he tries to make sense of the message that was delivered and the conclusion that was drawn. He could not fault his friends for pushing him to follow this. This lead could potentially change the course of how he proceeds with finding Ariel.

Liam rolls his shoulders, pushing his arms back and forth and cracking his neck, the tension in them almost too uncomfortable to bear. He rubs at the spots along his neck that are tight and as he closes his eyes, a smile lifts his lips as he imagines a much smaller pair of hands kneading the back of his neck, the lithe fingers easing the tension after a long day of meetings, diplomacy and trade deals.

If he envisioned hard enough, he could acutely feel her fingers on his skin, her soft lips on his neck as she kneads the knots away as Liam sighs in contentment, his chest warming with love for his wife.

Liam allows himself to stay in that vision for a few ticks of the clock until his exhaustion starts to overcome him and the smile of Ariel snaps away. Liam takes a deep breath as he settles into the bed, his eyes already heavy from the emotions swimming inside his gut.

Even with the sweet blackness of sleep dragging him under, Liam can only hope that the message he had gotten was the answer to all his questions.

He at least had to try.

And maybe . . . just maybe . . .

He’d be able to breathe easy once again.

Three days had passed and she hadn’t heard from Marguerite since she instructed the princess to hand off that message to Liam. The worry was starting to gnaw at her insides.  

Marguerite had been born into the world of crowns and charity derbies and the heavyweights of the monarchy. She’d all been bred for the role, punctuality and resiliency included. It was unusual for her to be this late with information.

Maybe this was just paranoia. That didn’t surprise her really. She’d been on the run for nearly three years, what’s a little paranoia to add to growing list of more bad karma to happen to her?

If she could be sure about anything, it was that the message was delivered. She had to. It was the only thing that was tethering her down at that point.

Liam might be doing this on his own but Ariel could breathe a sigh of relief to know that he had a bit of help.

It was the only thing she was capable of doing even when she was in hiding. The contacts she had made over the past few years served her well.

It still astounded her that most of the European royals were falling to the tricks of The Sons of Earth. They weren’t to blame. The Sons of Earth were the puppeteers, and they, the marionettes. How easily she and the others had danced into their trap, one by one. The ultimatum they sprung on her all those years ago sending a shiver down her spine at the memory.  

The amount of royals, though, was a surprising number. They had planted the root of their plan inside her crown, and from there, it had ensnared so many. Belgium, Monaco, Sweden - how many would mourn in front of television cameras and the harsh scrutinies of family expectations because of her?

Oh, the Sons were clever, she had to admit. She had been so naive, believing in the goodness of people to ensnare them in their own deviations. How wrong she had been, and now she was paying the price. It was little comfort knowing her fellow royals were undergoing the same thing. No, it was a tinge of guilt.

An all too familiar flare of anger closed its fingers on her chest, and Ariel bit down on her cheek, keeping quiet lest she shout in anger.

Anton Severus…

How dare he return.

Anton hadn’t wasted any time in making sure that he had power over Ariel. Liam was her weakness. Her only weakness and Anton carelessly toying with both their lives too many times.

All the lives balanced so precariously in her hands was too much. And the Sons had known it, shaking her so much her knees gave out from under her and she cried herself to sleep countless nights.

“After everything . . . and I’m still here,” she muses, dejected, shoulders slumping.

After conquering Anton at her wedding...she and Liam could finally relax. They felt free. Free to live, laugh and love.

Liam’s reign was no longer chained by these threats. They were free from further plots against them.

Ariel scoffs, shaking her head in bitter resignation.

Who was she to think that she was finally rid of that complete asshat?

The time that she had with Liam felt like a distant memory and something that was slowly slipping out of her grasp like sand on a hot summer's day. The time without him was breaking her, if not already. It would be easy to leave, max out her credit card to reserve a ticket on the library computer, then jet away. That little slip of paper would be her salvation and her downfall.

She had a purpose. She had a duty.

If she took flight, her feathers would only fall on the other royals. Whose lives would be at risk now? Marguerite? That prince of Belgium who disappeared just a bit ago? Another royal with no idea of his or her fate?

Anton Severus knew how to play her. How to play all of them. Either disappear or let the lives of all royals to fall into the hands of the Sons of Earth and let the monarchies of Europe falter and crumble. The worst part? Essentially giving Anton Severus the control to do as he pleases without any remorse for the consequences. Trying to kill Liam and herself was simply not enough in his case, apparently. For everyone's sake, Ariel chose the former.

That was the exact reason why Liam was in danger. Anton had close eyes on him and if Anton caught a whiff of what Liam was doing Anton had the means to make sure Liam would stop.  Ariel had faith that he’d be doing the investigating discreetly. Ariel knew her husband enough that she knew he’d be doing everything in his power to find her. If the roles were reversed -- she would not stop until her last breath.

Ariel exhales heavily as she leans back against the couch, pulling the soft fleece blanket over her as the chilly apartment bites into her skin. The low drones of the television distract her from the impending realisation that no matter what she did...those she loved would be in danger and she could not do a thing to stop it.

The last remnants of sound eased in and out of the tiny room as her eyes closed.

“Officials report no further leads on the disappearance of European royals . . . here to speak on the matter, is geopolitical expert, Thomas Marin. Thomas, tell us . . .”

“Order up!”

It had been four hours already, delivering orders, pouring beer and spirits to those who asked, their eyes glazed over in an alcohol haze she saw on a daily basis.

When did her life become this mundane, never-ending cycle?

Her heart aches at the longing she feels for the diplomatic meetings, international and national trade deals and economic summits she accompanied with Liam. She would give anything for her to be in one of those now. Who would have thought she’d take those meetings for granted?

She chuckles at the irony. “Figures. Such a twist of fate that is.”

More duties come as Ariel takes a plastic bussing bucket and begins to empty the tables of the half-eaten food, her mind drifting to the rolling hills and calm blue waters of Cordonia and the deep running valleys of her duchy. She wondered how Valtoria was doing without her.

Ariel's stomach twists in regret because she left a duchy, her duchy without anyone to guide them. She had failed them all. Even more tragic, she had failed Cordonia.

“Honey, you’ve got two at table twelve,” Tania yelled over the din of a cracking plate, and the drunken slurs of a young man nearby. Hurriedly brushing a tiny bead of sweat from her brow, Ariel whisked over to the table, sidestepping a grease stain that the busboy had failed to clean. She’d have a word with him later.

“Hi! Welcome to the Mountain Tavern, what can I get you guys?”

A deep chuckle resounds in her ears and she glances up. The smile she has on slips from her face, the breath in her lungs jarring to a stop as the blood in her veins runs cold when she recognises the face.

Her eyes dart to the unfamiliar brunette beside him as panic rises to her chest, the overwhelming urge to run pounding through her whole being.

This is bad. This is so bad.

The next words out of Ariel's mouth are choked, short, all of them stringing into an incoherent sentence. “What--I don't--How--Where--?”

The man with the familiar face stares her down. His eyes are kind yet had a hint of suppressed anger.

“Well, this a shock. What are you doing here, Your Majesty?” he says, the smirk on his face evident. That mischievousness she so delighted in seeing appearing even in this tense atmosphere.

The brunette beside him gives her companion a quizzical look. Her face blanks and then flashes in recognition as she meets Ariel’s blue eyes. The stunning brunette gasps.

“Oh my gosh. This isn't--?”

Leo nods, his blue eyes piercing through Ariel like he could see through to her soul where all her secrets lie. She flinches as her stomach rolls violently. Her skin prickles in the telltale sign of a fainting spell, herself already feeling lightheaded.

“The one and only. My brother’s wife and the missing Queen of Cordonia.”

especially stressful days (and which ones aren’t?) usually end with him in the bath, soaking in lavender-scented epsom salt with water nothing short of scalding until his fingers prune. james has always been cerebral, pensive; it’s hard to find a moment when his mind isn’t churning over something, but baths are a sacred slice of his day when he forces himself to relax and think of something other than the latest narrowly-averted catastrophe.

licking his lips. a dead giveaway of james in thought. his lips tend to chap if he’s been chasing a particularly difficult train of thought or project for a few weeks, which means chapstick (mint) is never too far away from his desks.

sitting on things that aren’t meant to be sat on, and sitting in chairs in ways he’s not supposed to. james isn’t sure why he does it. sitting in chairs normally just doesn’t feel comfortable. wo fat insists it’s because he’s a rebellious little shit— he’s probably right. but if there’s a proper way to sit on something, james isn’t doing that. he’s more comfortable with his ass on a counter or desk, arm slung over the back of an office chair, legs hooked over the sides. why? because fuck you, that’s why. but when he’s forced to sit like a good boy...

crossing his legs. james tends to sit knee-over-knee when he’s confined to a chair, a motion that’s feminine and oddly appropriate for him. 

pushing up his glasses. more a holdover from when he was a child and his glasses were a size or two too big. frequently done as a filler between thoughts, or maybe the slightest frustrated tick.  

canting his head. almost always associated with a smirk, usually whenever something catches his interest.

james takes immense pride in his entire wardrobe, but he has a particular weakness for shoes. leather shoes. dressy shoes. expensive shoes. his personal favourite are THESE floral derbies, which he saw in a store window and bought without a second of hesitation.

james rarely sleeps. it’s not uncommon for him to go a day, two days, three days without it. a wicked case of insomnia (which he’s medicated for, but rarely actually uses those pills) coupled with a stimulant problem in his early 20s and a paranoia that wakes him up when sissel so much as pads across the kitchen tile means james has trouble sleeping. 

that means when james does fall asleep, it’s either a) with someone he trusts, or b) not entirely of his own consent. he’s fallen asleep at his desk more times than he can count, working until he literally can’t keep his eyes open, or drifting off inadvertently on the couch for a couple hours at a time because whatever netflix documentary he’s got on as background noise has lulled him to unconsciousness. but when he does find himself in bed, it’s usually curled tight with his back pressed to his partner, or— if he really trusts you— he’ll lounge on your chest, knot his limbs with yours and use you as a pillow.

they’re nimble, long-fingered things that are more calloused than you’d expect of someone who looks as put-together as he is. years of working on computers (hardware and software) have left him with tough pads good at precisely striking keys, and his time more heavily invested in the criminal world (yakuza or otherwise) saw him leaning heavily on knives, wearing a few telltale callouses and scars of knifeplay gone awry. 

but james still puts effort into them. they’re soft where they haven’t been hardened by his lifestyle, well-manicured with nails cut short, though a kaleidoscope of small cuts and scars can be found along them. most notable is the ridge that runs across his palm and its mirror along the back of his hand, which into his 30s is little more than a pink line— he doesn’t like to talk about that one.

and blatant physical affection usually only comes at the end of inebriation, and james’ drink of choice will always be whiskey. not the cheap shit, either; james has expensive taste, from his clothes down to his drinks, and it comes off on his breath.

You Got Me!

Alright, alright...I could have been better with the blogging...

And one could wonder why, seeing that I've been jobless for a year (partly by choice and a series of unfortunate events regarding my health), one would think that would spur on more literary feats from yours truly...

Seeing that one has much time on her side, one would think that there'd be more text on this page...

Alas, one is not always right, is...one? 😜

Basically, writers block comes without warning. And in my case, for extended periods of time. Life has also been more fascinating to actually live rather than write about or document. And whilst I probably document more than most, I've been enjoying the downtime I take from it too.

In this case, it has resurfaced late at night when I struggle to sleep. This is due to a combination of rather boring things such as oversleeping during the day and being zonked out from medication I am currently on.

So in these rather cumbersome moments of ridiculous insomnia, I choose instead to write and reflect on how amazing life is right now. Maybe the infective positivity of everyone's new year reflections has finally made its mark on me. Or maybe, just maybe, I dare say I'm quite happy and pretty grateful for life as it stands?

For starters, there's a very cute furball curled up at my feet.

Isn't he just the sweetest?

There's also a very handsome man sleep talking right next to me. Occasionally in his sleep he turns around and gives me a peck on my forehead or cheek. When questioned about this in the morning, he will adamantly deny this - lest he be perceived as sweet or adorable.

He is my rock, my best friend and super hot lover. That's right, womankind, I did good.

He will also have my head if I put yet another picture of him sleeping up on the whole wide web.

I also got the job I've been wanting for a while - the clinical medical fellow post that'll guarantee stability for 1-2 years before I apply for GP training. Pay rise plus 9-5 with no oncalls- the dream, some would say. Plus it's nice to not have to move for a while. I could get used to that.

There are ideas buzzing in my head about where I want to take myself career wise. Do I want to stay in medicine or try out something new? I'd like to get involved in management. Hence the MBA on the horizon, that would supplement the possibility of making partner at a practice in the future. More autonomy. Less clinical time.

There's the supplement of being able to do Botox injections and lip fillers. Lucrative business, that.

Like it or loathe it, Botox, fillers and other nonsurgical procedures are becoming the new beauty norm. After all, it’s your face, your choice – right? GLAMOUR reports…

It’s August 2017 and Jennifer, 27, is on her best mate’s hen do. “Cheers!” cries the bride-to-be, in the centre of the room. But instead of quaffing a glass of bubbly, she leans back and closes her eyes as a woman poises a needle at the side of her forehead. Wait, what the? “It was a Botox party,” Jennifer explains, adding that, since then, she’s had one additional Botox treatment at a London clinic. “I wear sunscreen, I buy face creams. To me, Botox is the next step and it’s now part of my beauty routine.”

The new normal?

Jennifer isn’t alone. Research shows a huge upsurge in twentysomethings getting injectables in the form of Botox and lip augmentation, as well as nonsurgical enhancements, including dermal fillers and jawline reshaping. Over half (51%) of women aged 16-29 would consider getting cosmetic enhancements either now, or in the future* – and by 2020, it’s believed that almost 1.5 million of us in the UK will have had a nonsurgical treatment such as Botox or fillers.

“I consider getting Botox as just good grooming – it’s like flossing my teeth,” says Eden, 24, from Edinburgh.

Generation X may raise their eyebrows – or would, if their eyebrows could move. Because one of the reasons so many millennials are exploring nonsurgical procedures is because their mums are doing it, or have done it, too. “We see a lot of mother-daughter pairs in our office,” says Dr Norman Rowe, a board-certified plastic surgeon with a practice in New York City. And for some of the daughters, the motivation is getting a step ahead of the ageing process. “People start earlier,” agrees Dr Tijion Esho, who runs the Esho clinics in Newcastle and London.

“In the past, you might not consider these treatments until your mid-forties, now women in their twenties are more aware of the ageing process and are doing things to halt it.” Women like Emilijia, 28, from Norwich. “Instead of forking out hundreds on expensive creams that might not work, I know Botox can stop my frown lines getting any deeper. I don’t fear ageing but I also don’t accept that ageing has to mean resigning yourself to everything nature does to our appearance.” Not only that, but for Gen Z and millennials who have grown up seeing a dermatologist, using skin creams and having spa appointments such as lash tints and facials, fillers and injectables have become the next logical step.

“Millennials are more open to cosmetic procedures than any other generational group,” says Jack Duckett, senior consumer lifestyles analyst at global market-research agency Mintel. Its most recent report found that 28% of 18- to 24-year-olds and 31% of 25- to 34-year-olds have had some form of cosmetic treatment (compared with an average of just 21% for the whole UK population). “This age group is more knowledgeable about nonsurgical treatments, and what can be achieved with them,” says Dr Rekha Tailor, medical director of health and aesthetics in Surrey. Advances in technology have also led to subtler results, which in turn means less stigma surrounding injectables. “People are starting to realise that Botox and fillers can be done and still give the person a natural appearance,” says Dr Rowe.

Of course, it’s easy to pin the rise of interest in cosmetic tweaks on Instagram. “I feel social media has imbued this very specific, Barbie-esque aesthetic with big lips and a sculpted face,” says Caroline, 27, from Swansea. But your feed might not be telling the whole story. Make no mistake: scrolling through a well-curated account can make us compare our looks, but experts point to a wider shift in cultural norms.

‘Airbrushing’ apps such as Facetune, as well as the contouring make-up trend, can give people a glimpse into what fillers or Botox could do to their faces. “Contouring made me really aware of my angles, and to be honest, getting fillers was a less labour-intensive solution,” says Isla, 27, from Bristol. But Isla is quick to point out she isn’t turning to treatments to raise her self-esteem: “It’s just a look I prefer, the same as I prefer plucked eyebrows and straightened hair.” That, say experts, is the key change in attitude from earlier generations. “Patients used to bring in images of celebrities as a reference; now more and more patients show us airbrushed and retouched pictures of themselves as a guide to how they want to look,” says Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh, a world-renowned cosmetic doctor with a clinic in London.
