TW: dead animal, roadkill/found carcass, amateur taxidermy, mention of eating animals. If you don't wanna see this stuff, pls block #anda loves pieces
I think I got more vitamin D this morning than I have all week! I was fortunate to find a lovely, very fresh (!!!!!!), nearly entirely intact (!!!!!!) rabbit on our morning dog walk. So I spent like an hour outside working it up. My first bunny!!! 💚💚💚 (Helping dad after a hunt doesn't count.)
I'm not sure how long it was out there, but it honestly could've still been edible, so it wasn't bad to work up. The injury was to the back of the neck and afaict it was a bite. So maybe not technically roadkill, but still as ethically sourced as an animal can be.
(Just fyi, I wouldn't eat a wild animal that wasn't freshly dispatched bc health concerns, but I'm not against it if others wanna do it. It's technically illegal in my state, although officials have publicly stated that they wouldn't ever charge anyone with "possession of roadkill with intent to eat." It is legal to collect already dead animals, so I'm good.)
Bc the damage was so localized, I got all 4 feet, both ears, and the tail for curing and they are so abdorable. 😊😊😊 They're in my alcohol jar now. Idk if the tail will survive, but I figured I'd give it a go. I mean, free tail. Worst case scenario, all the fur is lost, I have to change out my jar, and I learn a valuable lesson, right? I imagine the ears will keep their shape relatively well bc cartilage. I hope so.
The rest I skinned out, scored and buried. When SO gets home, he's gonna help me put wire screen over it to protect it from dogs, etc. Hopefully that will give me bones eventually, and nearly all of them should be intact. I haven't done it yet bc I'm so new to taxidermy, but ppl say it works well. The head was beautiful, no visible damage. I hope I didn't cut it up trying to skin it. 😟
I'm not good at this yet, but I'm not the worst, and I'm really enjoying it. I wish I took more pictures, but I only have one of the bunny in the bag I used to collect it, and the pieces in my jar. I'mma make them tiny so I don't accidentally trigger anyone. Lmk if it doesn't work.
