23 Times People Were Majorly Confused By Australian Slang
Having grown up in Australia, I sometimes take our weird and wonderful lingo for granted. Sure, every culture develops its own unique slang; I thought I had learned Spanish until I turned up in Spain to discover that people have a ‘language within a language,’ countless funny and often rude idioms and phrases that they just don’t teach you at school.
Australia is the same. You haven’t truly experienced Australia until you’ve had a chat with a random bogan in a bluey, durry in hand while smashing down a tinny in his stubbies and thongs. If you’re lucky, he might let you help yourself to the contents of his esky, chuck a snag or two on the barbie and discuss whether he reckons the pies have got a chance of winning the flag this year. (Pro tip: the pies are a bunch of sooks and sheilas, catters all the way mate).
Needless to say, when foreigners come into contact with all this nonsense it can be a bit of a head-scratcher. The internet is providing tons of opportunities for a bit of cross-cultural education, and it’s always fun trying to help the uninitiated try to decode our unique way of speaking. Need proof? Scroll down below to check out some Tumblr users who were just fair dinkum stumped by it all, and needed an explanation. What do ya reckon? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Queen’s Thief Fic Recs
For @little-berenice who just finished Megan Whalen Turner’s Queen’s Thief series and loved it and wanted to know if I had any fic recs to tide her over until May. I may....have a few. :) All links to AO3.
Letting Go by Ghostie (Queen's Thief, Gen, Eugenidies the God, Moira, Queen Thief) The Queen Thief is dancing on the rooftop, calloused toes flipping deftly across the slates. Eugenides stands invisible beside her, watching her spin and twirl against the sky. She’s beautiful like this, he reflects. So graceful, so joyful, so human. So much more than just another mortal tool.
Her Lovely Face Gleaming Like a White Poppy by loathlylady (Queen's Thief, Attolia, Eddis, Gen, Sophos, Phresine, Magus) The paths which Attolia and Eddis take are both paved with loss, but the ways they walk those paths are very different. An amazing non-linear fic about the lost brothers of both Queens and the way they remember them, and the path that lays before them. Great backstory for both.
The Servant by jadelennox (Queen's Theif, Attolia, Phresine, Eugenides) Post-Queen of Attolia. Phresine!!! a book unfinished by VegaOfTheLyre (Pre-canon, Minister of War/Queen Thief) When the minister of war meets the King's Thief's daughter for the first time in years, it is not under the most favourable of circumstances. Oh, man. Great look at what Eugenides' mom might have been like, and how the serious, stable Minister of War might have fallen for a Thief. The Princess of Eddis by TL (Pre-canon, gen, Helen, Irene) Helen's only experiences with princesses come from herself and the histories. An imagined first meeting between Helen and Irene. I love the tension here of how different they are, and yet similar, and how in different circumstances, maybe they could have been friends. A Temporary Inability to Go Up or Down by lightgetsin (Queen of Attolia, gen, Eugenides, Eddis, Magus) Eugenides was not stuck. This is a missing scene of Eugenides making his decision to go up or down after Attolia's punishment. Eddis' understanding of him and Eugenides' conversation with the gods as he clings to the side of a tower are just fabulous and so well-drawn. Lovely, lovely, lovely. The Best Interest of Nations by pendrecarc (Mid-'King of Attolia', gen, Magus, Eddis, Minister of War) In which a story is told, swords are drawn, and adventures are planned, but nobody arranges a cart. This fic has a great voice and style. I could easily imagine it as a cut-scene from the books. I think I would have sub-titled this fic 'How the Magus got his groove back'. It's a nice look at how he comes to make his choices in 'A Conspiracy of Kings'. Plus, Eddis and the Minister of War are particularly well-drawn as well. Epithalamium by yunitsa (King of Attolia, Attolia/Eugenides) A Pindaric ode in honour of a wedding. All you need to know about this glorious, painful, beautiful, lovely fic are these lines: "She had been frozen and the thawing hurt, like a hundred stabbing knives. He spoke her name, drawing away for the space of a breath, and in his mountain accent it sounded like ice breaking." Guh. The Landscape After Cruelty by elanne (King of Attolia, Attolia/Eugenides) A story, say the people, of the god Eugenides, how he came down from the mountains – not in a blaze of flames, but with an outstretched hand. This is not a simple pairing. They have guilt and pain and cruelty between them and will perhaps never be fully easy with the lives they have to live. All of which is why I love them to bits. This fic does such a great job of dealing with all of that, not glossing over anything, but still leaving them intact with their personalities and affections. my secrets are doors by Fahye (Attolia, Attolia/Eugenides) As a young girl, the queen of Attolia thought about the manner in which love might strike her. A look at Attolia's uneasy relationship with love and growing up and where Eugenides fits in. A Token for a Token by Miri Cleo (King of Attolia, Attolia/Eugenides) Gen is still a thief at heart, and it is best not to offend the gods or one's wife. A fun little romp, with Eugenides being Eugenides and Attolia being Attolia. Everybody Rolls With Their Fingers Crossed by redbrunja (King of Attolia, Attolia, Attolia/Eugenides) The most inept assassination attempt of Attolia's reign occurred three days after her marriage. Ha! Attolia kicking ass and being generally awesome. With bonus Eugenides. The King's Guard by Lesserstorm (Post-King of Attolia, gen, Costis, Teleus, Relius, Aris, Eugenides, Attolia) Costis is just glad to be a squad leader again, even if Aris does say he's starting to think like a politician. I love Costis, and this is a great look at how and why Eugenides chose him. And how he's kidding himself if he thinks the king will ever be done shaping him into a useful tool.
Ere by chalia (King of Attolia, Attolia, Eugenides, Relius) “Ere translates as love, a rather ruthless love, not mercy. . . The Great Goddess of Eddis is not known for her mercy.” Attolia would never confuse love with mercy. Absolutely amazing in every way. This is why I love Attolia. THIS.

Fox women...”Fox wives, writes folklorist Heinz Insu Fenkle (in a good article on the subject) are seductive creatures who "entice unwary scholars and travelers with the lure of their sexuality and the illusion of their beauty and riches. They drain the men of their yang -- their masculine force -- and leave them dissipated or dead (much in the same way La Belle Dame Sans Merci in Keats's poem leaves her parade of hapless male victims).”

WIP meme
tagged by @verecunda again <3
Rules: Include the first line from a WIP, and tag as many people as there are words.
considering that openings are awful and my script WIPs have undecided first lines, i went with the fic option, and horrifyingly, i’ve spent so much time with the fucker that i didn’t even need to look it up
Omar has never been particularly good in a crisis.
it’s not even a very long sentence, and i STILL don’t remember who writes, but i’mma give it a stab this time: @birdsquirrel?? @facingthenorthwind, @loathlylady, how about @sevengiraffes and @the-illusiory y’all writing anything? and a few wild stabs in the dark, @xihydrae @yagyuzue @let-it-be-extraordinary and lil @bubblesbythebeach whom i can never tag, life is dark and horrible

Everything you thought you knew about witches is wrong. They are much darker, and they are much more horrifying. Wytches takes the mythology of witches to a far creepier, bone-chilling place than readers have dared venture before.  When the Rooks family moves to the remote town of Litchfield, NH to escape a haunting trauma, they're hopeful about starting over. But something evil is waiting for them in the woods just beyond town. Watching from the trees. Ancient...and hungry.
