Have you ever gone to a supernatural convention? I'm going to Austin just for the Misha Special thing, but I feel a little fomo for not getting a ticket to the actual con. But the thing is, it's so expensive, and I actually cringe a little when I actually meet actors. Idk why, but I'm so awkward and the idea of paying so much money for a 5 second obligatory hug makes me squirm lol. What's it like? An I missing much?
If you haven't, then disregard haha. Thanks for being in the fandom, I love your blog :)
hi hi! first off, a bit of housekeeping, because i've got a few other anons in the inbox i just haven't had time to reply to lately (SORRY! I haven't been on tungl much recently!), but since this is a bit time sensitive with the con happening this weekend, i figured i should at least answer this one :)
YES! I've been to a bunch of cons, but only a few as a ticket holder. I have volunteered at some, worked for a vendor at others, and lobbyconned at even more. They are a LOT of fun. The first con i went to was DC Con 2014, over a decade ago, and after all these years, the most fun part for me personally is just seeing friends in person, more than the actors, panels, etc.
most recently i was up at NJ con in May, right around the 10th anniversary of my first con :'). i didn't have a con ticket, but did have a ticket to the SNS (which is also a lot of fun if you ever get a chance to go to one of those! Karaoke is also fun, and free to the public!). Some cons are better for not having a ticket, and NJ is not among those lol. You need a ticket to even get into the vendor area there.
That said, I don't know the layout of the austin con venue, so I don't know if you'll have access to the vendor area, etc. But it is fun just go to and wander around a bit!
I also haven't been able to get into the Misha event yet (i tried in NJ, but when they moved the venue I was worried I'd miss part of the SNS if I tried to make it there and back, so I didn't go... I went to the SNS with friends instead :)
As far as con tickets, there are single day general admission tickets that are less expensive, but the cost of the con is for the whole experience, the all-day panels with the actors. And even if you do get a photo op, you absolutely do not have to hug anyone you don't want to! in my lil icon pic up there, i wanted both me and jensen to hug misha (that pic was taken during the post s10 hiatus, and i thought Cas really needed a hug :'D), but you don't even need to touch anyone if you don't want! Directly in front of me in line, my friend jenn had jensen and misha play twister while she knelt beside the mat :'D But there's lots of ways to have a fun pic taken with folks without hugging if that's not your thing!
But again, the biggest draw to cons for me at this point is being in a room filled with people who all love the same thing as much as you do! :)
I hope you have a great time, however much of the con you're able to experience! :D

So before I fall asleep and forget panels
Mandip really has loved every minute, talks about how good a "number one" is - Jodie leading the cast in a totally supportive way so everyone had lunch in her trailer just as a matter of course as they talked things out and she looked out for them; she's "the boss" to Bradley Walsh and even he was impressed by how she does that BTS job of kind of being the captain and anchoring/guiding them (Colin Spaul who did classic Who and new mentions there really isn't much time for rehearsal now, unlike the old days, so not a lot of time to plan and experiment)
S11-12 Jodie was 1, Brad 2, Tosin 3, she was 4, and she probably should've been 3 with John Bishop's experience but Jodie said absolutely not; also in scenes without the Doctor Mandip was half jokingly being 1 but had actually learned a lot from Jodie about leading a cast, a lot of bts stuff she'll take with her [parallelling Yaz!] obviously admires her as well as being really good friends
it's Mandip's first con in the states so of course she's getting really competitive trying to beat Barrowman's ribbon collection
she doesn't think of it as work (she said this at the smaller meet & greet) she really does love acting!
Mandip was a little disappointed they had to stay in wales ("I love Wales!" she hastened to add) for s13 after going to S Africa and Tenerife and Bulgaria, but she liked the continuity, getting to work with actors for several stories like past work
Her favorite stunt so far, although they're tiring, was the crane, just because she'd been doing "telly in the kitchen" right before that, and that scene told her right away this was Big (although she didn't like the heights)
upside down isn't as fun as she thought it would be; headache!
She didn't know that yaz was going to fall for the Doctor until she read those lines on the page — she and Jodie were both like "hm, yeah, we can work with this!" —although it was a natural progression. Until then had been playing it that Yaz admired and loved the Doctor in one way or another, but it totally made sense (she talked about falling in love after becoming good friends with someone, and about how Yaz's flashes of anger with the Doctor are because it hurts more when someone you love hurts you; you don't care so much "if it's a bus driver being rude")
Yes, she had her "Thasmin is canon" ribbon; it was the first thing she mentioned, to much applause. Given her by interviewer Riley Silverman
She talked about representation, understanding it as an Asian actor and why it matters to see characters like you on the media you watch.
And it was just a relaxed and comfortable interview. Riley mentioned at lobbycon that Mandip appreciated Riley had really listened to what she said, more than most interviewers do, which Riley noted as sad. [That's the trouble with prepared questions. Riley is a standup comic, so she's better at improv.]
I feel like I should have more for Sacha but his interview was before Mandips and the interviewer's questions weren't as good.
He has tremendous respect for and spent a lot of time with Waris Hussein. (Who said he did a good job, except while watching rehearsal "I was more posh."
Sacha joking about his not-posh Mancunian (Manchester) accent: he's the first Master not to call himself Maaaahst-ah with that initial posh a-sound. He's from a small village in Manchester, misses it.
Talked a lot about variable modes of his Master, that rather than wearing latex masks he rips off, he likes to settle into other roles, other lives, almost as if he's trying to escape being himself — he's the "Master of disguise" and keeps acting in new ways so you're never quite sure which is the real him.
Got down into his mind a little bit, being resentful of not being appreciated, old friends/enemies with the Doctor, etc etc etc.
Suggested a wild idea— with canon changing/refreshing in weird ways — he could be the next Doctor (I almost think he meant his Master; he's still learning the lore. But he was joking around.)
Asked if he had a controversial take on the Master, what he would have his Master say, he kind of curled around the mike and did a tortured "I love you, Doctor" which would have caused several shippers' heads to explode. I'm not sure he is aware of the shipping, although I suspect by the end of this weekend, he'll be informed.
He and the interviewer had mentioned therapy at some point, so they concluded that perhaps s14 should include the Doctor and the Master in couples therapy.

while im oversharing on this topic of lolita fashion attracting pedophiles, once at a con, as a minor, i got wasted in a trusted-at-the-time friend's room(i was stupid. i do not endorse this) and said friend was just lobbyconning so i ended up in the public con hall with random 20 and 30somethings and this one guy kept 1. trying to get me MORE drunk and back to HIS hotel room 2. trying to steer the conversation towards fetishes and 3. kept calling lolita and historical fashion cosplay which was like, the greatest sin to me at the time. i should have cut him off far earlier but i didn't know how to tell people no so i just kept changing the subject and then eventually was like "you know, ive gotta go to a panel with a friend at.... 12:00.... So ... Haha goodnight..." (it was like, 10:00 at the time). i also continually accidentally stepped on his feet with my huge heavy ass wooden block rocking horse shoes which is the one thing i don't regret about the encounter

Wednesday was a travel day, where we left Anaheim and eventually headed to the LAX Marriott for Gally. Luckily, our hotel had a very generous parking policy. Even though checkout was at 11am, parking privileges don't end in the lot until 3pm. Probably to give people another day at the parks even if they need to check out.
So we checked out of the hotel, and even though we didn't have tickets for a 3rd day at the parks, we still were able to get to Downtown Disney and walk around. There was actually a lot more Oswald the Lucky Rabbit merch out that day which wasn't at the parks when we were actually there so I picked up a plush of Oswald playing a banjo and a small tub of cotton candy, as a treat. I just thought the packaging (with Grogu) was adorable and when the cast member ringed up my stuff, she mentioned how good that cotton candy flavor is and I made a good choice picking it up.
Haven't tried it yet but will soon.
We had plans to check out the Frank and Son Collectible Show in the afternoon (the place doesn't open until 3pm) so we stuck around Downtown Disney for that last bit of classic park ambience, then left to slowly make our way, eventually, to the Marriott.
We were looking for something else to do before 3pm rolled around and I decided that we could check out an H Mart. H Mart, for those not in the know, is a Korean grocery store chain that's begun to expand into California. There are quite a few in southern California but the ones up where I live are still pretty far away. I'd seen other folks online rave about how great it is so I was pretty curious to check one out. So we set out for the one in Buena Park and ended up picking up some things for dinner. I got a kimchi rice ball, some jeon (savory pancakes, with crab and scallions mixed in), a tub of kimchi, and a bag of shrimp-flavored chips. I was most impressed with the selection of kimchi. I really wish we'd get an H Mart closer to where we live.
After the grocery stop, it was off to Frank & Son. The event is a former furniture warehouse where small vendors can rent space for a booth. It's like wandering into the Dealers' Room at any decently sized con. Lots of Funko booths, and some anime merch (i'd considered picking up the King Mickey Nendoroid but there wasn't much difference in price between the booth and getting the figure on Ebay so I held off). J found a couple of Hot Wheels he was searching for so I think the trip was worth it. Some booths were selling Magic cards and Pokemon cards, comics, and some sports collectables, though most of the stuff I saw were geared towards toys vs. sports.
By the time we got out of the building, it was getting dark and we drove towards LAX. I was reminded why no one in L.A. likes going to LAX. It took over an hour to drive 20 miles. Granted it was the middle of rush hour but we weren't in a huge hurry so it didn't matter much.
Got to the hotel around 7pm and checked in. As I waited in line at the lobby, I saw Janet Fielding, Sophie Aldred, and Chris Chibnall checking in at the desk. Gally began for me that moment. :)
We ate our Korean food for dinner in our room, making it smell like kimchi (oops) and met up with some friends in LobbyCon before calling it a day because I've done more in the past 3 days than I had for many months at home. Tired but excited for what's to come.

it's Sakura Con this weekend and I have been seeing people at various parts of town not remotely near the convention center in full cosplay/gorgeous goth loli coords w/giant halberds and its so delightful.
was hoping to go down today and lobbycon but It's Not Happening bc Holidays. ah well.
But yesterday I had the hilarious idea that next year I should go on Sunday dressed as anime jesus (it would be funny bc sakura con is always Easter Weekend). and then someone could go as anime pontius pilate with me complete with the phone charms they beat Jesus with.

Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention, a tradition in North American Doctor Who fandom since 1990. Yes, Gallifrey One has been running for going on thirty-two years! With the record for the longest-running Doctor Who con, it’s easy to see why the Doctor Who cosplay from Gallifrey One is some of the best in the world!
L-R: The War Doctor Cosplay (@whonewpodcast), 11th Doctor Cosplay (@redheadedchinny96), Tasha Lem cosplay (Corissa B.), 13th Doctor Cosplay (@georgiiaagrace}, 10th Doctor cosplay (@doc_in_the_box), 12th Doctor Cosplay (@whocosplay), Amy Pond cosplay (@thegingercompanion), Rory Williams Cosplay (@vigilantecosplay), 11th Doctor Cosplay (@aaronrivin)
What makes the cosplay at Gallifrey One special
For many, Cosplay is a way to express themselves, be creative, and make new friends. It creates a sense of community that most grown-ups lose after high school or college. For some, it goes so far as to make them feel more confident about themselves without realizing it. Many find it was an avenue that helped them learn more about themselves. And let’s face it, it’s just fun to dress up!

Cosplay is this “special” universe where adults come together, put their egos aside, and celebrate what they geek-out over without any shame of “not acting our own age.” Anyone would be lying to themselves if they said they didn’t care to find a realm where they could be unapologetically themselves while dressed as their favorite character. This can be true of the cosplay at any convention. However, the situation at Gallifrey One gives a special license to be a little more unique. Doctor Who has over 50 years’ worth of characters and spin-offs to draw from. There are plenty of options for what you can cosplay.

Being recognized as a Doctor Who cosplayer can be tricky at most comic cons. Much of what the characters wear on the show is ordinary, (albeit very fashionable) everyday attire. Much of what is worn in the current series can be purchased at popular retail stores (we call these cosplay pieces “screen accurate”). It also makes it easy to find a suitable and affordable alternative (“alts”) outfit that look close enough to what the characters wear on the show. At a convention like San Diego Comic-Con for example, not everyone will immediately recognize your outfit as a Doctor Who cosplay, they might mistake it for just everyday attire. At Gallifrey One, even the most obscure cosplay is recognizable to someone.

The Masquerade
Every year at this convention is the Masquerade of Mandragora. Named after the first serial of the 14th Season, it is the annual Saturday night costume competition and fashion show. Many conventions boast costume contests. At other conventions, the costumes are from a large range of fandoms. The masquerade at Gally (short for Gallifrey One) revolves around one fandom, Doctor Who. This gives children and adults who enter the competition an opportunity to turn up the creativity.  Photographer David Phillips (IG: @drquien) captured the beautiful cosplay that was on display.
Contestant Veronica Swarbe as a clockwork droid.
Cosplayer @lotcosplay as Ramona
Contestants Bryan Little, Mette Hedin and Mea Cottman.
Cosplayer Becca Novotny.

Cosplay Meet-Ups & Groups
Cosplay Meet-Ups happen at many different conventions. It is an opportunity for cosplayers to gather together and celebrate their shared love for a character or a fandom.  Cosplay meetups can be large or intimate. No matter the size, the main purpose is to get together and take fun photos while hopefully meeting new people and celebrating fandom.

These are far from all the meetups that happened at this convention. Most of the meetups are fan organized and happen through Facebook groups and are eventually announced in the Gallifrey One schedule. Some notable meetups that we did not get to photograph ourselves were the 10th Doctor Meet-Up usually hosted by @hairclubforten, the Pond Paradox Meet Up and the River Song Meet Up.
Cosplay Mash-Ups
Cosplay mash-ups are when two fandoms or ideas collide to make one unique cosplay! This year, there were plenty of mash-ups to be seen. From punk, pajama, and 1950s inspired Doctor Who groups to Critical Role crossovers. This convention gives Whovians (Doctor Who fans) an opportunity to mash together a lot of the things they love!
