Marriage Challenges During Lockdown

A sad statistic showed the number of the domestic violence increased during lockdown since couples (and family members) are sticking together a lot more. Tension could be increased and unsolved problems would intensify.

No one chose to live with and to love someone who would harm themselves in the first place. A lot of tragedies actually came from miscommunication. To love someone is a life-long lesson. Instead of looking back and blame each other what they have done wrong, shall we look forward and see what we can do if we still commit to make it work?

We are not relationship experts and can’t solve every family issues, however, we would love to suggest our couples to look at their own love languages.

The Five Love Languages is a book published by Dr. Gary Chapman in 1992. It says there are 5 ways to express and experience love:

– words of affirmation – acts of service – receiving gifts – quality time – physical touch

To find out your own love language is as important as knowing your love one’s love language, since love is a two-way street requires both sides to invest time and effort in.

We did the love language test before and find it useful. Both of our main love language is ‘Quality Time’, so we like to spend 1 on 1 time and doing things together without distraction, however, our second love languages are different. Tina’s one is ‘Receiving Gifts’ (and her last love language is ‘Physical Touch’), Edward’s one is ‘Physical Touch’ (and his last love language is ‘receiving gifts’). So, it is interesting, the way Tina expresses love may not be valued by Edward. At the same time, Edward’s way in expressing love may not be appreciated by Tina. We both learnt to pay attention to each other’s needs and express in the way the other half can understand.

Why the photographer and videographer would talk about this kind of thing? It is because we care. The reason to have shots done for couples and weddings is because we want to ‘preserve love’. Photos and videos let us experience the emotion and the happiness again and again. These memories give us strength and energy to keep going. We record your vows – ‘Words of affirmation’; we bless our clients with what we can give – ‘Acts of service’; the photos and videos are definitely the best gifts to our couples which help them to have the important day relived- ‘Receiving gifts’; we freeze the time and make it last forever – ‘Quality time’; although we may not be able to give lots of hugs and kisses to our clients, our works can touch their hearts – ‘Physical touch’.

Let’s get married (When we are free to do so)

By Tina, lead photographer:  Recently, I saw a post popped up on my Facebook feed written by my sister who has lost her husband who suffered from brain cancer last year, “Love, in Time”.

Somehow we all take it for granted about being loved and be able to love someone back. We all know it by theory, but this time, we really felt it. That is what the pandemic has taught us.

My thoughts are with those lovers who are separated in different locations, different cities or even different countries and also those cohabiting couples.

Miss the time travel together, eating out, have date nights, watch movies in cinemas, buy each other gifts, celebrate each other’s birthdays, experience together, laugh, cry, hangover together.

I asked several people, some of them gutted they just haven’t make the decision to get married sooner when they knew he/ she is the one.

This time, let’s do it ‘in time’. Doesn’t matter if it is a grand wedding or not, because our eyes only focus on our loved ones. By the altar, in front of the witnesses, we vow to love and take care each other till death do us part.

It is why I kept practicing my photography skills. Each love story is important, is priceless, worthy to be remembered and announced. It is our privilege to witness them and capture all these important moments.

Here are some detail shots took during the lockdown:

Why detail shots are important? Normally brides and grooms spend hours on choosing the theme colours, decorations, accessories and clothing, flowers, invitation cards, table plan and so on for their big days based on their characters. In order to ‘feel’ the day relive, we would like to sense the smell, feel the light, the atmosphere, the texture and emotion. All these help us to achieve that. When putting detail shots in the album, it helps to glue different moments together and tell a complete story.

  How do the grooms see weddings?

We all know that it is a tough difficult time since the world stands still, quite a lot of countries are in lockdown. It affects our lives, economy, businesses, relationship, psychology and communities. For now, we would like to get you all away from this. Let’s imagine things slowly getting back to normal, imagine governments allow weddings to be held again.

This is an interview with the man behind the video camera – Edward.

Q. You have seen and filmed a lot of weddings. In your opinion why we normally think of the bride when we talk about weddings?

A. Weddings, Women, we have been told weddings are one of the most important events in a woman’s life. They have started to imagine the dream weddings since they were young.

Traditionally, young ladies are leaving their original families to join their husbands to form new ones. It is difficult for both brides and their families.

But for grooms, it is equally important as it means new  responsibility – to take care the brides and their little angels.

Q. What kind of things grooms looking forward to in weddings?

A. From my observation, grooms see it is an event to spend time with groomsmen, best friends and relatives from afar and of course, enjoy the drinks.

Q. What is going through a groom’s mind on the day?

A. Well, first of all, wake up on time, have some food, and see if there is any guest need directions, so on. The getting ready process would not be as long as the bride’s one, but the groom still wants to look good. To tame the nerves, a glass of drink would help.

A few shots of getting ready would be great: wearing watches, combing hair, spray cologne, wearing jackets and shoes, tidy up cuff links. Then the important scene would be waiting his bride next to the registration desk or altar.

Before getting into the venue, I like to interview the grooms sometimes, to ask how they feel. 9 out of 10, they all expressed they felt nervous (with a smile on the face and probably shaking hands).

The most emotional time is seeing their brides come to them and they turn around to see their brides for the first time. In lots of video clips we filmed, we can kind of feel how they feel when we see tears coming down from their eyes. Some of them think, ‘Wow, she looks different.’, some may think, ‘the makeup has totally transformed you.’ or ‘thank God I have this pretty girl for life!’

Then, the next big task is ‘SPEECH’! (except signing the legal papers, and non-stop taking photos with friends, family and the bride.)

Most of the grooms prepare their speeches before hand. They need to thank the guests for coming, thank the brides’ parents for the beautiful brides, thank everyone who helped in the weddings and most important, praise the brides!

After cake cutting, first dance, the grooms can finally really have fun and party on with unlimited drinks. Quite a lot of times, we see grooms and their groomsmen got tipsy, but we all very happy for them, of course!
