now that long live (taylor’s version) is almost upon us and there’s a 99.9% it’ll actually kill me, i feel the need to impress upon you all the underrated lyrical genius of long live
now of course, a lot of its lyrical genius is not underrated at all and it’s a beloved song for good reason BUT my history nerd brain feels like one particular line gets missed and i just need you a’ll to understand it in all its glory when the taylor’s version comes out okay?
i’m talking about specifically the line “and bring on all the pretenders.” now i think a lot of people assume that whe’s talking about people who pretend and are fake when she says that, and she absolutely is, given that so much of speak now is about being real and true to yourseldf and lovng the people and things that you love and being honest which makes that line very fitting HOWEVER
the word “pretender” is also a word that means someone who makes a claim to a throne that does not belong to them. there are modern-day pretenders to the thrones of russia and france, for example, even though those places don’t have monarchies anymore, and throughout history when several people have made a claim on a throne at once, they would be considered “pretenders” by the rival claimants.
given the imagery in that song about kingdoms and crowns and “we are the kings and the queens,” the line “bring on all the pretenders, i’m not afraid” takes on an incredible double meaning where she’s basically saying, “let the people come and try to take this kingdom that we’ve built away from us and sit on our thrones, i’m not afraid of them because i know history will remember who this magic belongs to”
it’s such an amazing lyric, and i am never going to be over the fact that she wrote it at TWENTY YEARS OLD COME ON WOMAN THAT’S INSANE
taylor singing long live at 33 makes me wanna cry so damn hard. we've been with this woman for a decade and now she's finally achieving everything she's ever dreamed of, i'm so glad that we never left her and we indeed stayed by her side
Confetes caem no chão
Que essas memórias pausem nossa queda
there is something so amazing about Taylor writing Long Live at 19 as a goodbye letter of sorts to her fans in case her new album failed, and then rerecording and releasing it at 33 while in the middle of an incredibly successful world tour, 17 years into her career
