This is a tragic story that has been developing over the last few days.

In our classes, we talk a lot about the importance of being prepared for other “good guys with guns” if you have to use your gun in a public space.

Too many courses currently being taught still have a 1980’s mentality that everyone you see with a gun in public is a bad guy. Back when less than 1% of the country could legally carry a concealed pistol, and a dozen States had no provision for it at all, instructors and police academies could get away with that.

With the current list of Permitless Carry States being factored in, I figure over 50 Million People can legally conceal guns in public in our country. Many more have them in their cars or workplaces. Plus Law Enforcement and Armed Security. AND there are good guys who carry even in non-permissive environments.

The idea that if you are assessing after a shooting and see someone with a gun you should automatically point your gun at them and/or begin shooting at them is RECKLESS. But, I still see police and civilian “defensive” training that involves shooting multiple target engagement without actual assessment of the second target first. 📷.

We need to do better… in both Civilian and Police Training.

In addition to better information processing, we also need to lose antiquated extended ready positions from all defensive curricula. Compressed readies are much more easily distinguished from shooting positions and make “trigger checking” far less likely. They make both negligent discharges and “good-on-good” shootings less likely.

We have the training models and techniques to make things better… we just need more evolution and adoption of these methodologies.
