Portrait of Louis of Nassau, Lord of den Lek and Beverweerd (1602-1665). Unknown artist.
He was the illegitimate son of Margaretha van Mechelen and Maurice, Prince of Orange, and so a collateral member of the House of Orange-Nassau. He was a Lord of the heerlijkheid (a landed estate that served as the lowest administrative and judicial unit in rural areas in the Dutch-speaking Low Countries before 1800) van De Lek (which he inherited on the death of his older brother, William of Nassau on his death in 1627), as well as the Beverweerd Castle (the second picture shows the Castle) and its heerlijkheid from his father.

Here’s Why Everyone Is Talking About A Pirate Drama That Ended In 2017
Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates
If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTok’s sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?
Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. ‘I am SO excited for people who’ll be watching this show for the first time,’ one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, here’s why you should tune into Black Sails this month.
Tumblr media
New To Netflix: Black Sails
What Is Black Sails About?
Black Sails transports us back to 1715 – aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (‘Long’ John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.
Is Black Sails Based On A Book?
Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island (1883).
Tumblr media
Is It Based On A True Story?
While Black Sails isn’t based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Lima’s treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire – a la Pirates of the Caribbean.
Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:
Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson)
Anne Bonny (Clara Paget)
Benjamin Hornigold (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)
Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz)
Charles Vane (Zach McGowan)
Ned Low (Tadhg Murphy)
Israel Hands (David Wilmot)
Meanwhile, Captain Woodes Rogers (Luke Roberts) – who represents the British Empire in seasons three and four – is based on a real English sea captain and slave trader, and subsequently the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas.
Tumblr media
Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?
Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smith’s Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drake’s Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy (1904).
Where Was Black Sails Filmed?
Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island – was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the series’ two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.
Tumblr media
The Cast
The cast of Black Sails is incredibly large, but key characters to know include:
Toby Stephens as James McGraw/Captain Flint
Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie
Luke Arnold as ‘Long’ John Silver
Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max
Tom Hopper as William ‘Billy Bones’ Manderly
Zach McGowan as Charles Vane
Toby Schmitz as Jack Rackham
Clara Paget as Anne Bonny
Mark Ryan as Hal Gates
Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Mr. Scott
Sean Cameron Michael as Richard Guthrie
Louise Barnes as Miranda Hamilton/Barlow
Rupert Penry-Jones as Thomas Hamilton
Luke Roberts as Woodes Rogers
Ray Stevenson as Edward Teach
David Wilmot as Israel Hands
Harriet Walter as Marion Guthrie

Wilhelm II (r. 1888-1918)
The Last Kaiser
Well, as you all know, our esteemed Kaiser has had a few bumps along the road of his reign. Most notable was, of course, the sacking of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, which made waves all across Europe. So far, the Iron Chancellor's successors have possessed none of the realpolitik skills needed to govern the country and this "dropping of the pilot" will surely be seen as one of Wilhelm II's greatest failures.
His Majesty has greatly expanded our navy, including the Nassau class of battleship, our response to the British Dreadnought. While some have railed against this expensive arms race with the British, His Majesty assures us that Germany must establish itself on the seas to be taken seriously. One cannot help but wonder if His Majesty's increasingly frantic search for "a place in the sun" has any connection to his upbringing.
His abrasive personality has led to Germany's isolation from former allies Russia and Britain, which places Germany in a precarious geopolitical situation should war in Europe break out. (Note: Don't be ridiculous -T)
Friedrich I (r. 1688-1714)
First King in Prussia
Persuaded the Pope to elevate the duchy of Brandenburg-Prussia to a kingdom, creating the Kingdom of Prussia. Were it not for him, our great state would have never existed. Unfortunately he was unable to claim the title "King of Prussia" due to some ridiculous dispute with the Poles.
A patron of education, he created the Prussian Academy of Arts and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences. The later was shut down under his son due to monetary constraints, but was later reopened and reorganized until Friedrich der Große.
Although he was militarily opposed to the French, he did incorporate a lot of French culture into his court in an imitation of Louis XIV.

Francis Kinloch in Müller's letters to his family
These extracts are from Johannes von Müller: Sämmtliche Werke, volume 7 (1810).
My translations here, original German and French transcriptions below the cut. I have added some paragraph breaks for legibility.
From the introductory Lebensgeschichte, von ihm selbst beschrieben (Biography, as described by himself)
Meanwhile, at the home of Charles Bonnet, for whom and whose wife he [Müller] developed the tender attachment of a son and who was treated as such by them, he met a young man from South Carolina, Francis Kinloch. He had an extraordinary thirst for knowledge, a great fire, many fine qualities and very pleasant morals.
They determined a plan to live together; every day, for several hours in the morning, they would study Tacitus and Montesquieu, or any other authors found worthy enough to stand beside them, and in the rest of the time, the one friend would read Blackstone and other English or American books, and the other would study Swiss documents, and on top of that, between spending time in the company of Bonnet and others, they would alternate between Roman, French and English classics.
Tronchin was too much Müller’s friend to keep him from this plan, and even more pleased was Kinloch’s guardian, Thomas Boone - the former governor of South Carolina, and at the time the director of the large London Custom-house, a man in whom, in thirty years of acquaintance, Müller never found fault, though he always found exemplary reason, firmness and generosity.
The friends lived for a year and a half in a modest country house on the hill of Chambeisy, surrounded by the highest mountains in the old world, the majesty of Lac Leman*, the incomparable culture of the shore, enjoying the masterworks of the human spirit, in daily association with Bonnet, but also with Voltaire, and brought together for a while with Mr Alleyne Fitzherbert, who was already developing the talents with which he later shone as Lord St Helens. After that, the storms of the North American revolution tore them apart.
*Also known as Lake Geneva.
Tumblr media
Undated, 1775, Müller to his sister
After this little introduction, I ask you to take a map of the Geneva region to hand. Here, on the Swiss side of the lake on the border of Geneva on French land, lies the town of Chambesis – on a hill that overlooks the lake, all of the estates, the entire republic and the glaciers. Now take the map of America. Here is Charlestown, the capital of Carolina. And here on the third map is Scotland; in the middle of which lives an ancient family called Kinloch; one of these left Europe at the time of the civil war of the Stuart kings, and found with many others there a beautiful country and freedom. One of these Kinlochs now commands 1200 negroes, and is a gentleman of great standing and much greater spirit and character; he is twenty years old.
He came to Geneva; in the last 5 to 6 months, we have seen each other for 23 hours each day and read the most profound writers together. Through this, we got to know and love each other’s characters.
Mr Kinloch has rented a small country house with six rooms in Chambesis, and is paying 12 new Louis d’or a month for this and table, breakfast and supper, for the next five summer months. In this solitude, he wants to study. He has such a noble character that he is highly estimated by everyone. Lord North, the prime minister of the king of England, is very fond of him; K risked his life for his son and saved him from mortal danger.
He has invited me to move in with him, and to spend this summer in the lap of scholarship and friendship. We would read and study together, occasionally go into the mountains, occasionally to Pays de Vaud. [...] And [Tronchin*], who loves me, and wants to see and promote my happiness, gave his permission, and his two children will spend this half of the year in a boarding house in the city and learn there. Thus, Mr Tronchin and they and I and Nassau and Bonnet and Kinloch are all content, and I will still see Mr Tronchin at Bessinge once every eight days.
*Müller was employed as a tutor to Tronchin’s two young children at the time.
Undated, 1775, Tronchin to Müller’s father
Have no concern, sir, about your son; everybody loves him, he is lively and good, his conduct has always been very wise, and all of our men of letters would vouch for him. The choice that he makes, to go and live with Mr Kinlock [sic] shall not, I hope, be without utility for him. He is a young man who has lived here for a long time, and who is generally and singularly esteemed both by his compatriots and by the Genevese, whether for his morals or for his character. The desire that he has to benefit from your son’s knowledge must be a guarantee of what I have told you.
From the introductory Lebensgeschichte, von ihm selbst beschrieben (biography, as described by himself)
Undated, 1775, Müller to his sister
Undated, 1775, Tronchin to Müller’s father

HRH Prince François Henri Luis Marie Guillaume of Luxembourg, Prince of Nassau, Prince de Bourbon de Parme -- b. 27 March 2023
François is a relatively uncommon name in the Grand Ducal Family; it is one of the middle names of Prince Robert, the first cousin of the Grand Duke, as well as Prince Wenceslas, one of the sons of Prince Jean and the Grand Duke's nephew.
Henri of course honors the current Grand Duke, who is little Prince François's grandfather.
Luis honors the Hereditary Grand Duke's younger brother, Prince Louis, as well as several other family members who have or had the name, including Prince Guillaume, the Hereditary Grand Duke's godfather, as well as Count Paul de Lannoy, the Hereditary Grand Duchess's late grandfather. The Spanish form possibly honors the Hereditary Grand Duke's Cuban heritage.
Marie is a long-standing tradition in the Grand Ducal Family honoring the Virgin Mary. Nearly all members of the Grand Ducal Family and the Lannoy family have this name, including both the Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess.
Guillaume honors the Hereditary Grand Duke, his uncle and godfather Prince Guillaume, as well as four former reigning Grand Dukes.

Royal Godparents to Royal Godchildren
I did this list back in 2012, and got some great responses. I've updated and edited parts of the list. Again, any corrections and/or adds, message me! Thanks in advance!
When choosing godparents for their children, the parents often chose friends or other relatives. Often in royal circles, royals also pick other royals. Here’s a partial list. (Yes, I know some lists are incompelte as some of these royals’s godchildren are not royals themselves.) If you have any additions, please feel free to message me!
