💓 - …lie on my muse, grinding slowly against them ( athena x raphael )
tw: nsfw.
Tumblr media
e graças a deus.

Wimbledon MS Q3: Know Your Men's Singles Qualifiers (1/2)
Tumblr media
The ambiance of the Wimbledon qualifying rounds in Roehampton (📸 CNN).
The Men's Singles qualifying action had just wrapped with 16 simultaneous third qualifying round matches concluded in best-of-five sets compared to the best-of-three from the previous rounds. Furthermore, the qualifying tournament took place in the Bank of England Sports Club in Roehampton instead of the actual All-England Club to preserve the lawns for the main fortnight.
However, coming into the qualifications, there were only 3 grass-court Challengers, all located in the United Kingdom (Surbiton, Nottingham, and Ilkley, the latter which also defined the race to the Wimbledon main draw wild card), and/or 2 out of 4 main Tour tournaments ('s-Hertogenbosch or Stuttgart, Halle or Queen's Club). Hence most players came with either lack of grass experience (despite the possibility of relying on faster hard courts) or back from playing the clay Challengers, which is more accessible before the tournament to preserve their form.
The article will be divided as the players qualify. The Twitter thread is accessible here.
Section 6: Tomas Machac d. Lucas Pouille 3-6, 3-0 ret.
Tumblr media
Tomas Machac’s point at 1-0* 40-30 to 40-40, 2nd set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
Despite starting the match with several consecutive breaks, Pouille started well by trying to drive Machac further off during the rallies, which was more visible thanks to his cross-court backhand winner to secure the break 5-3. He still had to face 2 break points from Machac, some of which were contributed over a double fault and a failed drop shot, then he managed to take the first set 6-3 after winning 5 straight points.
However, right after Machac led 1-0 at the start of the second set, Pouille had to take a medical timeout, presumably for his back. Unfortunately, it seemed like Pouille could not catch a break after starting his campaign with two deep victories against Zdenek Kolar and Giulio Zeppieri, hence he retired after Machac’s smooth service game to 3-0, which break of serve happened since Machac went to the lines a lot while maintaining his ball low, including a pass to fumble Machac’s latest game point (as displayed).
Section 11: Gijs Brouwer d. Otto Virtanen 6-4, 6-2, 6-4
Tumblr media
Gijs Brouwer’s point to break 5-4, 1st set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
While it must have been a while since Brouwer played in the grass courts before, he started his grass season with a 0-3 record, with some losses came against Jason Kubler (Surbiton Challenger R1), Rinky Hijikata (‘s-Hertogenbosch R1), and Charles Broom (Ilkley Challenger R1). However, he went through the first two qualifying rounds by defeating Luca Pow and Jurij Rodionov, all in straight sets.
Brouwer then continued his “not dropping a set” streak by defeating. Virtanen 4, 2, and 4, with stiff competition in the first and third sets. Somehow, Brouwer’s volley (and passes) became one of those noticeable shots that stood out, securing his 5-4 break before consequently taking the first set 6-4, and confirming the whole flow went in his racquet until the end of the match.
Section 7: Harold Mayot d. Matteo Gigante 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Tumblr media
Harold Mayot’s point to break back 1-2, 1st set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
While Mayot was notable from his Aix-en-Provence Challenger run as a lucky loser (l. Andy Murray in the semifinals), the run was possible thanks to a working serve and parts of his baseline game. However, even though he was a break down in the beginning of the match, he used this to the fullest, countering Gigante’s defense with a slice. Gigante’s forehand error then resulted in Mayot breaking back 1-2, and he looked more solid afterward.
Additionally, while he previously had never played in the grass courts before, he maintained a positive 3-0 win-loss record throughout the qualifications by notably defeating James Duckworth 6-4, 6-4 in the second qualifying round. All of these were thanks to him taking the ball as soon as possible, and maintaining his pacing until Gigante, whose return overwhelmed Gabriel Diallo in the previous round, got some trouble getting them back.
Section 16: Shintaro Mochizuki d. Zsombor Piros 6-3, 6-4, 6-1
Tumblr media
Shintaro Mochizuki’s point to break 1-0 right at the start of the match in the 1st set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
While Piros looked more favored on paper due to his positive grass records (including qualifying to the main draw last year), S. Mochizuki struck as he remarkably won the 2019 Wimbledon Junior Boys’ Singles title (defeating Carlos Gimeno Valero 6-3, 6-2). Interestingly, S. Mochizuki survived the scare in the second qualifying round as he defeated Lukas Klein 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2.
The former junior World No. 1 set the match up by driving Piros off balance thanks to his controlled aggression, breaking early due to the latter’s forehand that went too low. Since then, S. Mochizuki controlled the flow from the baseline while Piros kept imploding, surviving a break point until Piros’ balance went off toward the end of the match. This was visible starting at the end of the second set, where Piros’ forehand rushes resulted in him being broken for the set, and S. Mochizuki did not look back since.
Section 12: Sho Shimabukuro d. Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
Tumblr media
Sho Shimabukuro’s point at *1-2 15-15 to *1-2 30-15, 2nd set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
Both players had an impressive record coming to the Wimbledon qualifying rounds. S. Shimabukuro, for example, reached the quarterfinals of the Nottingham (l. Nuno Borges) and Ilkley Challengers (had to ret. v. Arthur Cazaux) as a qualifier and lucky loser, respectively. In contrast, Denis Kudla had an 85-53 career win-loss record before this match, including a Wimbledon third-round run in 2021 (l. Novak Djokovic) and a fourth-round run in 2015 (l. Marin Cilic).
However, although Kudla tried to keep it close, parts of the margin came when S. Shimabukuro passed his shots (including a forehand passing shot for an equalizer in the first set), utilizing the open space and power well until Kudla’s balance went off in the service game concerned. Those pressed Kudla’s shots enough until he could not create any other chances, and S. Shimabukuro stayed true to his service games until the end.
Section 1: Matteo Arnaldi d. Frederico Ferreira Silva 7-5, 6-4, 6-4
Tumblr media
Matteo Arnaldi’s point at 1-1* 15-15 to 15-30, 2nd set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
Arnaldi started his qualifying campaign without touching grass beforehand, winning the Heilbronn Challenger on clay instead (d. Facundo Diaz Acosta 7-6(4), 6-1). To make matters even darker, Arnaldi came back from a set and a break down in the first qualifying round to defeat Juncheng Shang, who was an Ilkley Challenger quarterfinalist as a qualifier, 3-6, 7-6(0), 7-5, and Ferreira Silva had a 5-3 win-loss record on grass.
Just like Arnaldi’s previous matches, this became a close match as Arnaldi “learned by doing” how to grass. While the scoreline suggested how close the match was, the baseline game became the key differential throughout the three sets. Arnaldi appeared more willing to take risks and make his own chances, including his backhand lob as a gate-opener to the second set break. Alas, Arnaldi proved grass skeptics wrong and qualified for the main draw at the end of the day.
Section 15: Hamad Medjedovic d. Billy Harris 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-4
Tumblr media
Hamad Medjedovic’s set point conversion to 7-6(6), 2nd set (📸 Wimbledon qualification feed)
Medjedovic started his grass season straight in the Ilkley Challenger, where he defeated Shintaro Mochizuki and Joris de Loore in straight sets in the qualification rounds before being defeated by Denis Kudla. Somehow, outside of his known clay or hard-court prowess (the former more frequently), he continued his positive grass-court trend by demolishing Pedro Martinez while getting the best out of Ricardas Berankis in three thrilling sets.
The thrill did not stop when he faced Billy, the last Brit standing in the ATP department upon his victory against Hugo Gaston, where the depth and pacing were also tested. It was a stiff competition until it boiled down to a few differentials, one of which came in the second set tie-breaker, where Medjedovic smashed his way to scoring his set point before his volley conversion to take the second set 7-6(6). Despite being a close match and Billy was spotted having decent shots, it was insufficient for him to create any other chances while Medjedovic converted 25% of his break points (out of his 8 opportunities).
Section 14: Enzo Couacaud d. Aleksandar Kovacevic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), 7-6(5)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enzo Couacaud’s point at 6-6(5-5) to 6-6(6-5), 3rd set tie-breaker (left) and 6-6(5-3) to 6-6(6-3), 4th set tie-breaker (right) (📸 ITF Media)
Couacaud had a history of qualifying to the main draw, defeating Dimitar Kuzmanov in the third qualifying round before losing to John Isner in five close sets. In contrast, this is A. Kovacevic’s first grass-court season, having mostly 3-set early exits (notably l. Christopher Eubanks in Surbiton & Zsombor Piros in Ilkley Challenger) coming to the qualifying rounds.
A. Kovacevic started dominantly by taking the first set 6-2, staying comfortable on his serves. Somehow, as deep as the American could dig (including a comeback from 5-2 down in the third set), there were various ways for Couacaud to sort things out, eventually bringing the last two sets of this match into two tie-breaker sets. These tie-breakers came down to A. Kovacevic’s forehand errors prior to Couacaud’s set point conversion in the third set and a general differential in the fourth set tie-breakers, signifying him getting outhit under pressure. In the case of the latter, Couacaud scored his initial match point thanks to a working volley prior to its conversion 2 points later.
This article will be continued with its second part to cover the rest of the qualifiers and the lucky losers if announced. Both should be useful coming to the draw tomorrow, considering the qualifiers will be placed during the draw compared to on a separate occasion from the draw itself.
