For BAZAAR’s Possibility Issue, the Oscar-winning actor and director opens up about the legacy of Shirley Chisholm—who she will portray in the upcoming film, ‘Shirley’— the loss of her son, and finding a way forward.
When it came time to photograph this very cover, King carefully selected a @poloralphlauren gown in her son Ian’s favorite color— #orange—in honor of him.
#SerenaWilliams Is The GOAT. But, how about little @OlympiaOhanian winning us over … left … right … & … centre 🥰 🐐 @serenawilliams Vogue. September issue Cover. There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy #tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting #Serena. I'm gonna relish these next few weeks. 🥰 Vogue // @voguemagazine Photographer: Luis Alberto Rodriguez // @luisalbertorodriguezstudio Fashion Editor: Gabriella Karefa-Johnson // @gabriellak_j Hair: The late Latisha Chong ❤️ and Tav Kinard // @iam_thechong Makeup: Raisa Flowers // @raisaflowers Entertainment Director: Sergio Kletnoy // @sergiokletnoy https://www.instagram.com/p/CiC7Jm3O9ha/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The @CFDA Fashion Awards just got a little more iconic. @SerenaWilliams, one of the greatest athletes of all time, will receive the Fashion Icon award, the first to be awarded to an athlete. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve used fashion as an outlet to express myself,” said Serena Williams in a statement. “I have had so much fun learning my style and allowing it to change as my life has evolved, but I’ve always held one thing true—fashion is for everyone, no matter your size, race, or income. I am incredibly honored to be receiving the prestigious Fashion Icon award from the CFDA, an organization whose work I have long admired and to stand among style icons I have always looked up to.”

@serenawilliams and her sister @venuswilliams are the reason I started paying attention to tennis! Watching these gifted, athletic, beautiful Black girls adorned in braids and beads BEATING opponents on the court was incredibly thrilling and inspiring!
And let's talk about Serena's tennis court fashions, honey!! Folks were big mad and pearl-clutching about all that flash and bawdy while we cheered her on for her choices and upsetting the tennis establishment just by being her badass self! Serena changed the game literally and figuratively!
Despite the rampant racism and sexism Serena endured, she continued to dominate the sport and became a fierce, outspoken advocate for Black mothers and pay equity for women athletes.
While I will truly miss Serena competing, I wish her well on the next phase of her journey. Cheers to evolving on your own terms!!!
GOAT, PERIODT!
Reposted from @voguemagazine “I have never liked the word retirement,” @serenawilliams tells Vogue. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me...
Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family ... I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”
For Vogue’s September issue, the 23-time grand slam winner sat down with contributing editor Rob Haskell to compose her thoughts about preparing to say farewell to tennis—on her own terms and in her own words. “It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine,” she says. “I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s next.” [Read full story below.]
