When the graffiti painter open their bag they opens a new story. Everything that happens before closing the bag is a combination of happiness, fear, madness, passion and all possible emotions that they didn't know existed when they packed the bag. One bag can hold hundreds of these stories.

The bags of graffiti writers itself which I have photographed for some years are a combination of style and practicality. And the idea that inside of each bag there are tens of meters of public expression is absolutely fascinating.

Now some of my photos of these possible stories can be found inside of a ALUE16 - Central Finnish photo art publication.

So many layers of wonderful stories!

Street Jargon.

Have you ever looked at the tags close enough?

Graffiti and street art culture is currently very popular. Although tags are the foundation of graffiti culture, they often receive little attention. Or really, the focus on tags is almost purely negative.

 My photo series invites you to look at the tags up close, paying attention to rhythm, shape, surface contrasts and colors. Often, tags are in unauthorized places, where the negativity around them can prevent them from being seen as they are. As calligraphy, image and text art or as a performance about the power relations of public space. My photos of tags are aspiring to

soften the negativity associated with them and give viewers a safe space to explore street speech.

Oletko koskaan katsonut tägejä tarpeeksi läheltä?

Graffiti –ja katutaidekulttuuri nauttii tällä hetkellä suurta suosiota. Vaikka tägit ovat graffitikultuurin perusta, ne jäävät usein vähälle huomiolle. Tai oikeastaan tägeihin keskittyvä huomio on lähes pelkästään negatiivista.

Valokuvasarjani kutsuu katsomaan tägejä läheltä, kiinnittämään huomiota rytmiin, muotoon, pintakontrasteihin ja väreihin. Usein tägit ovat luvattomissa paikoissa, jolloin niitä ympäröivä negatiivisuus voi estää näkemästä niitä sellaisena kuin ne ovat. Kalligrafiana, kuva –ja tekstitaiteena tai performanssina julkisen tilan valtasuhteista. Valokuvani tägeistä pyrkivät pehmentämään niihin liittyvää negatiivisuutta ja antamaan katsojille turvallisen tilan, jossa tutustua katupuheeseen.
