Scientists Are Stretching Diamonds to Revolutionize Electronics
A computer is only as strong as its weakest physical parts. As we push more data through smaller devices at faster rates, circuit board components are being taken to their limit. Failure means fragging out or going up in a ball of flames.
Silicon was the material that facilitated a total paradigm shift in information processing, but it can't conduct electrons fast enough to keep up with our insatiable info-appetites. As we round third base on a new computing future, the hardware industry has to keep up its end of the bargain. That’s led to a scorched-earth hunt for substances that can power the next phase of growth.
There isn’t a substance on this planet that can withstand and conduct and deliver energy flows like a diamond. The super material’s unreal ability to move electrons has made it the belle of the high-tech ball for five years running. But the punishing demands of computational quantum leaps have pushed diamonds to their semiconducting limits, too. Since ceilings can’t be a thing, scientists are "doping" diamonds to make them stronger, faster, and more efficient. But the yields are incremental.
A joint research team led by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is taking a radically different approach to the problem: elastic strain engineering. They’re breaking diamonds down to nano-size where they can then be physically stretched. This process opens up the internal bands through which energy can travel, and cranks their conducting power up exponentially. If strain engineering research continues to corroborate these findings, the impact will go far beyond personal computing. Almost every industry we hold dear will be rendered unrecognizable by today’s standards. To get a grip on the current situation though, here’s a quick tour through the many-sided world of diamonds.
A refracted industry
The high visibility of diamonds as consumer gemstones leaves the gargantuan enterprise industry mostly unnoticed. Only 20 percent of the mined diamonds on Earth become gemstones. These are glistening specimens with minimal impurities boasting an exquisite specific gravity of 3.52, meaning it weighs 3.52 times as much as an equal quantity of water. You know when you pack a snowball and it’s literally perfect in shape, density and hardness? Specific gravity is the Gemological Institute’s quantifiable equivalent of that. 3.52, chef’s kiss.
Then there's industrial diamonds. These fit into two categories. The first is the other 80 percent of diamonds coming from mines. This is the side of the family no one talks to—a vulgar army of lumbering cloudy-eyed cousins, all literally named Bort. The other supply of industrial diamonds is synthetic, which are grown in carefully calibrated laboratory conditions.
To put annual diamond production volumes into perspective, 142 million carats or 63,000 lbs of gem-grade diamonds are mined each year. A carat of gem-grade diamond runs you about $6,000 but can climb as high as $29,000. That puts the value of the diamond jewelry market at .
Industrial diamond production—Bort and synthetic—weigh in at 5 billion carats produced per year, or 2.2 million pounds. A carat of Bort goes for $.05 – $.30 cents. The market for industrial diamonds sits . Given the unit cost, that’s a cumbersome transaction volume.
So who is buying (and using) all this Bort??
Tumblr media
"Poor predictable Bort, always picks rock"
Industrial diamonds are hard AF. We humans discovered this attribute centuries ago and put them to work as an abrasive in grinding, drilling, cutting, and polishing. Diamonds also have chemical, electrical, optical, and thermal characteristics that make them the best material available for corrosion-resistant coatings, special lenses, heat sinks in electrical circuits… the list goes on.
Some of the biggest industrial applications for diamonds are stone-cutting and highway building repair, as well as the auto industry. The manufacture of every automobile in the United States consumes 1.5 carats of industrial diamond. Third is research and high-tech applications.
And now we’re where we need to be.

The Mount Everest of electronic materials
The technological applications of diamonds are abundant, from electronics, to high-power lasers, to cancer detection and treatment. There are an array of reasons why diamonds are unparalleled in so many spaces:
1) Ultra-high thermal conductivity: Diamonds stay cool in super-charged situations.
2) Exceptional electric charge carrier mobility: Electrons move through diamonds with smoothness and efficiency.
3) High breakdown strength: You can pump just a Titanic voltage through a diamond without its structure crumbling.
4) Ultra-wide band gap: If the space through which electrons can flow in a piece of plastic is a sink faucet, then the diamond’s crystal lattice structure is the Hoover Dam of semiconductors.
The characteristics that have brought the industrial diamond into wide-spread application also come with constantly mounting expectations.
The large band gap and tight crystal structure that make industrial diamonds such incredible semiconductors have their limit. Dying for some way to get a leg up on competition, researchers turned to doping diamonds. The most common practice for increasing the diamond’s electron game is called carbon vapor deposition.
Diamonds and the pathways inside of them, called lattice structures, are all made of carbon. In carbon vapor deposition, labs inject this lattice structure with either boron or nitrogen. Boron has one electron fewer than carbon; Nitrogen has one electron more than carbon. Key is that both manipulate the band gap, the passageway electrons take through the lattice. No one analogy does the trick, but here’s an attempt, as explained by this article’s new mascot:
The diamond band gap as an airport moving walkway
Ah, the airport moving walkway! What a utopian mode of transportation it is—every type of traveler moving every type of way, all on one resplendent metal carpet. Clear the way for the Business Man rushing to the front of some arbitrary line. Behold the Sweatpants-Clad, Portable Pillow-Carrying Mouthbreather so insistent on not walking that they might as well be in reverse. There’s the Family of 12 using their children as a barricade to any forward motion whatsoever. And make way for the Disheveled Vodka-Tomato Juice Before Take-off Fanatic, putting more energy into shaking his head than placing one foot in front of the other.
The walkway is our diamond band gap and the travelers are our electrons. There are a bunch of options for how we can change the way the walkway works and, consequently, how its inhabitants travel.
We could slow the conveyor belt down, or we could speed it up. We could widen the belt to allow more travelers to pass through per second. Or we could smear the belt with butter, causing the travelers to move side to side. This is essentially what doping diamonds does to their band gap. There’s an endless number of ways to tune the system to let electrons pass through.
There is one restriction: No matter how much you mess with the speed of the walkway, warp the dimensions, or add butter, the planes are all taking off as scheduled. At this point, we’re really pushing the walkway analogy, but that’s where we’re at with doping. There’s only so much the practice can do to affect an electron’s delivery. Until now.
Tumblr media
Strain engineering
Just before the New Year, a team led by the City University of Hong Kong has taken a key step in unleashing the full conductivity potential of diamonds. The full findings were published in Science.
The first step in strain engineering is microfabricating diamonds at nanoscale. To put things into perspective, that’s 624 times smaller than a grain of sand. The ideal shape of each diamond is above; it’s called a bridge. The two thicker ends provide a solid grip while the center gets stretched. Using a pincing mechanism, the tensile pressure is applied and then released in continuous cycles. The stretched area increases in length by up to 9 percent. When the pressure is released the diamond returns to its former dimensions. It looks like this:
Once that process is underway, researchers jump in to measure the band gap density at different pressures. They’ve found that as tensile strength increases, the band gap decreases. At points beyond 9 percent tension, direct semiconduction even begins to occur. This is a huge deal, because it means an electron clearing the diamond’s band gap with zero interruption.
Long story short, if these findings remain consistent, we’re sitting pretty for the next ten years of optoelectronics.
Beyond a truly mind-blowing feat of micro-engineering, these findings indicate that the next leaps in semiconductor efficiency will come from physically altering the density of substances. The icing on the cake is that this process can be continuous and reversible. A.K.A., you’ll never have to take your Macbook into the Apple store to have its diamonds replaced.
While that’s a few years out, “The Dawn of a Diamond Age of Electronics,” as one industry pioneer puts it, is upon us.
Thobey Campion is the former Publisher of Motherboard. You can jump the band gap into our electric diamond future with him here.

#05/2020 + #06/2020
From 3–7 February, we ran #ServicesWeek 2020 across the UK government. This week and week before were rather intense. With 80+ events in 14 locations, it was significantly bigger than last year. I published a preview blog post on the GDS blog before the event series started and then got three posts on the Services in government blog out.
On Wednesday, we ran the probably biggest Gov Design Meetup yet with more than 70 attendees. No surprise, ‘design systems’ as the topic was in high demand. After this 1-year break, I hope we’ll run another one much sooner – especially as it’s the best recruitment tool and we have various openings. Future topics I have collected include equity, organisational design, internal services and also a nerdy one on typography.
There is some exciting work with our economists on the horizon. Together, we are interested in measuring service improvements over time. That work would include creating an overview of all services first – something I have written about a few months ago.
Throughout January, I managed to run 50 kilometres. That is the same distance as last year. I started Nike’s run coach again and plan to follow its strict training plan for the half-marathon in May. The weekly Saturday Park Run is a beautiful new habit – and it’s rewarding as I keep improving my times.
Last weekend was about immersive experiences. My sister and brother in law were in town, so we went to play Electronic Theatre’s Alien Aptitude Test and Moriarty’s Game by Hidden City. One was a collection of 4-wall/projectors WII-like arcade games. The other was a text-message-based puzzle. Both were very different, but both good fun. Next time, we’ll try the Sherlock escape game, and The Void should reopen later this year, too.
Following my tweet a few weeks ago, I got to talk to several people about personal finance and investments. And it feels good. Some signed up to Freetrade and started an ongoing exchange with me. Throughout January, I managed to not spent 50% of my net income – that’s a record.
The main driver for the savings record was a sudden need for repair of my 2015 MacBook 12". After a cost estimate of £788, various repair attempts and almost two months, Apple’s technicians gave up, however. Today, I was suddenly given a brand-new MacBook Air 13" free of charge. Tomorrow, I’ll buy Apple shares for that saved amount – but will still miss my smaller 12" computer.
All things food: Dörte and Paolo were visiting from Berlin. We went to Little Duck: The Picklery for some fermented delicacies. It was a good reminder for finally using the Fairment set I got for Christmas.
Roxy made some great purpose-built porridge bowls for me. They are a little small but look fabulous on Instagram. First porridge made: a blueberry compote as I couldn’t find any rhubarb this week.

RTW Budget: Detailed Expense Breakdown for 492 Days Abroad
August 18, 2015 - December 24, 2016
492 Days Abroad
Trip Overview
Sylvie and I traveled through 221 cities in 39 countries over 5 continents.  We called hundreds of places our home and slept in more places than most will ever get to in a lifetime.  We slept in hammocks, in trains, in buses, in cars, on boats, in farmhouses, in teahouses, in hostels, in bed and breakfasts, in tents, on cots in the open dessert, in cheap guest-homes, in 5-star hotels, on couches, on a tile floor, on-top a chicken coop, on the ground next to a friendly German girl's bed in Mainz, in attics, in a rented room from an anti-Semitic in Belgium, et cetera, et cetera...
We each took 7 overnight sleeper trains, 26 overnight buses, and 31 flights.  I read 30 books and had 4 haircuts--although only 1 haircut was from a professional.  The other 3 were from my darling Sylvie.  We ate 144 fast-food ice-cream cones, though most were consumed in our first 4 months while in South America.  We bought dozens of new pieces of clothing and threw away/lost/mailed home a little less than that.  We taught English in Vietnam, helped to rebuild an orphanage in rural Nepal, and worked on a vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina.  We hiked quite a few mountain ranges--the largest being the Andes and the Himalayas.
Our Trip Route Divided into 4 Distinct Legs:
Leg 1: South America
Leg 2: Europe
Leg 3: Indian Subcontinent
Leg 4: Southeast Asia
View Full Size Travel Map at Travellerspoint
Mishaps
We tried to keep records of all our 'mishaps' but I know we forgot most of them.  At last count I had written down 20 of them.  Here are some of them:
ATM card was eaten by machine in small town of Piura, Peru
Had food and supplies stolen from us by a clever monkey in the Bolivian Amazon
A group of children tried to pickpocket Sylvie in La Paz Market - she picked up and they left empty-handed
Nearly stranded at the Bolivian border
Had a collections (inaccurate) on my account and had to deal with that while traveling
My Barclay Master Card was hacked in RIO and had a new one overnighted to me in Lisbon
Got items confiscated at UAE airport and were 'reported' to authorities
Left Kindle behind in Delhi hostel - was later mailed to me in Jaipur, India
Sylvie and I both broke our phones
Electrical surge broke Macbook Air while in Borneo, had computer repaired by sending to Bangkok
Lost credit card/ID in Serbia
Lost Passport while en route to airport in Krabi - had mailed to me in Chiang Rai following week
Sylvie left Kindle behind in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar - RIP Kindle
Ailments
With the exception of being extremely dehydrated for a day in Delhi I never 'really' got food poisoning or sick.  There were times I felt a bit off and am not sure how sick I would have actually gotten but I just popped a very high dose of azithromycin and was fine in a few hours.  I've been to India twice, every country (less the Philippines) in SE Asia, spent a month in Africa and have never had food poisoning.  I eat uncooked street-food every opportunity I get.  I even ate a raw, still-beating, snake heart while in Vietnam without getting even the slightest form of indigestion.  There were 24 instances of being sick while on the trip (the vast majority of them revolving around dear Sylvie).  Here is a tally:
Sylvie:
TD - 11 times
Fleas - 2 times (possibly more, she loved petting stray animals)
Common Cold - 1 time
Bed Bugs - 1 time
Blister Rash - 1 time
Chest Rash - 1 time
Altitude Sickness - 2 times (1 time was very bad in Cuzco, but at EBC coca tea helped treat)
Scott:
Dehydrated - 1 time
Bed Bugs - 1 time
Common Cold - 1 time
TD - 2 times (took high dose azithromycin both times and warded off all symptoms in 4 hours)
RTW Budget
Notes/Comments
Budget includes 2 people for the first 461 days and 1 person for the last 31 days.
When there was any uncertainty/fluctuation in exchange rates or prices I rounded up to give a higher than actual estimate to keep the budget extremely conservative.
Every expense was tracked in this budget, even those that are not related to travel.  These expenses--such as the cost of website hosting, VPNs, etc.--were all captured under "Pre-Trip Expense".
The only expenses I had during my time abroad that are not included in this budget are my student loan payments
Though by American standards our type of travel is considered 'budget' we don't truly fit into that category by ex-USA standards.  We met many travelers spending a fraction of what we did.  We ate out most meals, stayed in hotels with a/c fridges and color TVs, and traveled around much more than most backpackers.  Many budget travelers stayed in hostels and cooked their own food (think pasta and sauce).  However we did take buses, trains, and ate at mostly budget-friendly restaurants or street-side carts.  For budget travelers I would say that you can cut our food, lodging, and transportation costs in half.
Sylvie ate meals more regularly than I did.  I was happy snacking on fruit and buying little things from cheaper street-side stalls throughout the day.  We always ate a nice meal for dinner though.
We are not big drinkers so most RTW travelers can expect to pay more on alcoholic beverages than we did.
We took many 'relatively' expensive trips during our RTW (Everest Base Camp, the 'W Trek', 3-day live-aboard SCUBA diving off Similan Islands, Bolivian Jungle trek, 21-day organized Colombian tour, Home-stays in Sapa, Trekking in Hsipaw, Northern Thai Yoga Retreat,  excursion to Borneo w/ associated national park fees and flights, etc).
We also enjoyed splurges many budget travelers couldn't afford to take (We rented a houseboat for 3 days, Stayed at 5-star hotels, took some high class buses/trains, Rented a car for several days, rented a motorcycle for a couple months, got massages frequently, had clothing made, bought extremely rare beer, took cooking classes, went adventure caving, hired private drivers, had food delivery to our hotel room, went to cinemas, saw theatrical productions, indulged in many cafe cultures, etc.)  These are just some of the things that many budget travelers would not consider worth their money.
We spent 3-4 weeks living with free lodging during our three separate workaways--Many budget travelers do less moving around and more workaways.
I've met single travelers living on less than $1,000 a month during their 12 month RTW trip.
I collected over several thousand dollars in sponsored products.  I had most of the gear already but received newer/better products, thus I would not have needed to purchase any of these items.  For this reason I have decided not to include these items in this budget.
Budget Breakdown:
I decided to break the budget into 4 sections.
Pre-Trip Costs - this includes gear, vaccines, insurance, memberships, transportation to/from US airports
During Trip Costs (Souvenirs) - this includes gifts/souvenirs, non-trip related purchases (non-essential clothing, cosmetics, etc.)
International Travel Costs - this includes travel between countries (mostly airfare but some busing)
Country Specific Costs - this includes all expenses relating to traveling/living within the specified country
1 - Pre-Trip Costs: The majority of Pre-Trip costs are not specific to this RTW trip.  Vaccines, gear, and electronic equipment can/will be used beyond the scope of the trip.  Vaccines and meds can be obtained while traveling and at a fraction of the cost here in the US.  Likewise, gear can be found on Craigslist or during your trip much cheaper than buying new here in the US.  Additionally, we paid nearly $1,500 for the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, which I would recommend against.  For these reasons I am discounting this portion of the budget by 50% to get a better representation (we will be using all the gear for our next trip).  Therefore I will be using $2,648 for this portion of the budget
2 - During Trip Costs: These purchases are non-essential and not related to travel and will be ignored when calculating the overall cost of our RTW.
3 - International Travel Costs: This portion of the budget shows how affordably one can travel around the world.  Flights, trains, and buses starting and ending within the same country were excluded in this section.  They can be found in the next section.  We traveled through 39 countries, which is many more than most travelers.  This portion of the budget can likely be reduced by traveling through fewer countries.
4 - Country Specific Costs: Once we arrived in a country any/all expenses we faced were placed in this section under the respective country.   Flights and other modes of transportation starting and ending within the same country are found here.  Phone/internet charges, travel-related medicines, visa fees, tours, etc. can be found in this section.  This section is further divided into 8 categories:
Lodging
Food
Transportation
Activity
Alcohol
Visa
Tours/Tips
Supplies/Misc.
So How Much Did It All Cost?
Putting it All Together
Pre-Trip Costs - $2,648
During Trip Costs (Souvenirs) - $0
International Travel Costs - $4,745
Country Specific Costs - $36,414
Total RTW Trip Cost = $43,807 ($89/day)
for less than $45/person/day we traveled very luxuriously around the world
Budget Deep Dive: An In-depth Analysis
Would you expect anything less than an in-depth analysis from a consultant (who is also an engineer)?  Here we go!!
Costs by Country
Below is a table of all the countries we visited, the duration spent in each location, and the total spent.  For simplicity we lumped countries in Western Europe together, as well as countries in Eastern Europe.  A few notes on a per country basis:
Colombia -  We were on an organized tour for the entire time while here.
Ecuador - We were on an organized tour for some of the time while here.  We mountain-biked volcano, took 12 hours (each) of private Spanish lessons, and took a private tour to Isla del Plata.
Peru - We spent 8 days on organized hiking tours to Machu Picchu & Colca Canyon.
Bolivia - We spent 7 days in the Pampas & Rain Forest & 3 days taking a tour of the Salt Flats.
Chile - Much of our time here was hiking through Patagonia
Argentina - We took expensive long-distance bus rides (38 hours), several internal flights, and several organized trips to various glaciers.  Saved money during our 10-day stay working on Mendoza vineyard.
Brazil - Was not here long enough to offset high costs of visas (~$290)
Casablanca, Portugal, and Spain - Spent 14 of the 17 days with parents.  They paid majority of expenses.
Western Europe - Ate out majority of meals & moved around often.  Spent an average of $45/day on food & transportation.  While lodging cost  us an average of $27/day.  We spent the most here, vs any other country, on alcohol ~ $4.50/day on mostly German and Belgium beer.
Eastern Europe - Used Airbnb more often.  Spent an average of $22/day on lodging, $20/day on food, and $17.50/day on transportation.
UAE - Stayed at filthy dorms in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi that still cost us $25/day (and that's after $80 in Airbnb credit and refunds).  Everything was expensive.  Tried to eat cheap but still spent $25.50/day on food.
Nepal - Did not move around much.  Spent 5 days rebuilding orphanage (paid $10/day).  We trekking to Everest Base Camp (rented gear, paid for airfare, hired porter, etc.).  Click here to see trip notes, budget, and planning for Everest Base Camp trek.  Transportation, food, and supplies are higher than typical because of EBC.
India - Most of our activities involved visiting mosques, temples, and forts.  Taj Mahal was relatively expensive.  We hired a houseboat and a crew of 3 for 3 days in Kerala.  We ate out a lot and not always at budget places.  The food was amazing and we wanted to explore as much as we could.
Indonesia - I received my SCUBA certification here.  We took a private excursion to Goa Jomblang Caves, which was pricey.  We also took expensive cooking lessons & surfing lessons.
Singapore - Very expensive.  spend $28/day on food.  Saved money by spending 2 of our 4 nights couchsurfing.
Malaysia - Spent 1 week in Sabah, Borneo and 8 days in Sarawak, Borneo which required a handful of flights.  Food was amazing in this country so we ate a lot.  Adventure Caving and park fees increased our costs more than what you would expect for Malaysia.
Thailand - Spent a lot on SCBUA diving (see liveaboard trip) and ~$840 on a 4-day yoga retreat.  Parents spent 2 weeks with us, which helped offset cost in this country.  I spent my last 31 days renting only 2 places, which also reduced transportation costs in this country.
Cambodia - Angkor Wat and the Elephant Nature Park in Mondulkiri were our largest expenses.
Vietnam - We slept for free during our workaway.  I wanted to try Dog and Cat meat (as well as eat an entire snake in Snake Village outside of Hanoi), which were relatively expensive.  We traveled to the far north, which required extensive transportation.
Myanmar - We spent more money that usual on activities.  We had a private boat for a tour around Inle Lake. We hired a private driver while in Mandalay.  There was a hefty fee to enter Bagan.  We also paid to enter the oldest Buddhist temple in the world as well as hired a private guide to trek through the small villages near Hsipaw.
Monthly Costs
The first 4 months of travel consisted of many organized and expensive tours/excursions (+ remote travel and gear rental for Patagonia, see below).  From January through March we were in Western and then Eastern Europe.  During April we visited Everest Base Camp, which cost us ~$1,400 for just under 2 weeks.  For the remainder of the trip, which we spent in India and SE Asia, we averaged $1,800/month.  The month of August was relatively expensive due to our trip to Borneo, which required 4 flights each plus park/activity fees.  During my last month, which I spent alone, I did not move around much, and took very few excursions, which is why I spent so little.
Patagonia Budget
During November and December of 2015 we spend 24 days in Patagonia.  We spend a total of $2,645, which is an average of $110/day.  This includes all tours, supplies, and transportation (many long-distance buses and 3 flights each).  For this calculation I took Santiago, Chile as our starting point and Buenos Aires, Argentina as our ending point.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Cumulative Total Spend
Below I re-posted the 4 sections I described above, this time including every dollar spent (even the non-trip related expenses)
Pre-Trip Costs $5,295 | During Trip Costs (Souvenirs) $4,708 | International Travel Costs $4,745 | Country Specific Costs $36,414
The country specific charges were the only expenses that were routine, normal, and able to be extrapolated.  For this reason I held the other 3 segments flat and charted the cumulative amount for country-specific costs (see chart below).  This allowed me to trend out/predict--using the slope--the rate of our spending throughout our travels.
You'll notice that the first portion of the chart shows a steep slope, which is due to our 21-day organized tour through Colombia.  The last month flattens out as I slowed down my pace of travel.
Total Daily Spend and Cumulative Running Daily Average
Below is a chart with quite a bunch going on--though I'll walk you through it.  The solid green line represents the money that we spent each day.  The peaks show expensive activities/tours, visa fees, and other various splurges whereas the valleys are representative of days we  spent very little.  The dashed green line is a 4-week running daily average,  which shows the average of the preceding 28 days.  This line is helpful as it averages out the expensive and in-expensive days to yield a more stable line.  Both of these green lines use the axis on the left.
The next two lines use the axis on the right of the chart. The solid red line represents the average daily cost of travel.  Unlike the dashed green line the red line is a running cumulative average, which means all prior days are included.  Our cumulative daily average starts relatively high and decreases with time due to our initial 3-week organized tour in Colombia as well as many of our SA excursions, which were all quite expensive.  However you see that our cumulative running average steadily decreases with time as you would expect since we were spending ~$60 once we left Western Europe.
The Dashed orange line shows the average daily cost of travel by month.
Comparing Daily Costs of Select Countries with Overall Average
The budget I built allowed me to select, from a drop-down menu, the average daily expenses by category of 3 countries that I wished to compare.  I also graphed the overall daily average using info from all countries.  In the example provided below I selected Western Europe, Vietnam, and Myanmar.  Along the left-hand side of the chart is a color-coded key indicating various categories.
In this example you can see that Lodging was our biggest expense in Western Europe while food was our largest expense in both Vietnam and Myanmar.  Food and lodging alone cost us almost $50/day in Western Europe.  Unlike Europe, Vietnam and Myanmar both required visas.
Budget Summary Page
Here is a the summary page for the budget I built.  Please help yourself and download the budget tracker--I only ask for a small donation.
amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "ditchthemap-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "search"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_title = "Shop Budget Travel Related Products"; amzn_assoc_default_search_phrase = "Budget Travel"; amzn_assoc_default_category = "All"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "683d0d85ce5e8d1a29ca4a4d68675bd9"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "true"; amzn_assoc_search_bar_position = "top";

Should I Repair or Just Buy New? A Look At the Pros and Cons of iPhone Screen Repairs
If you have been using an iPhone for quite some time now, you must be aware of the fact that your precious little device is highly sensitive and breakable. Being made of fragile materials that can break at the slightest impact against a hard surface, your iPhone is highly prone to damage. In fact, your iPhone's glass screen is the most sensitive part and hence, it needs to be taken care of.
Tumblr media
In most cases of iPhone damage, it is the glass screen of the iPhone that gets damaged or shattered. The ideal solution to this is to go for immediate iPhone screen repair at a good, reliable iPhone repair store situated in your locality. So, now the main question is why exactly the Apple iPhone screen repair is required and why is it a must for the future of your iPhone? There are various kinds of accidents that may cause iPhone screen damage. That would require immediate repair of the smashed or broken iPhone screen by experienced iPhone specialists who are certified to handle iPhone repairs and mobile repair near me in London.
In majority of the cases, people damage the glass screen of their iPhone by dropping it on a other hard surface by mistake. In such a case, the screen either develops web-like cracks on its surface or gets smashed completely. The small pieces of broken glass, if ignored, usually get inside the device and cause damage to the entire internal circuitry of the iPhone. This may lead to permanent damage in the long run. Hence, when the screen of your iPhone gets damaged due to any reason, it becomes imperative to get in touch with a local iPhone repair specialist immediately for immediate cracked iPhone screen repair.
In another similar fortuitous event, if your iPhone happens to drop on the pavement or the road while walking and gets stamped by a pedestrian or run over by a vehicle, its delicate glass screen will certainly get smashed completely. As a result, while your broken iPhone might continue to function, you surely wouldn't be able to use the home screen or any of your 'expensive' iPhone apps! Also, the likelihood of the fine glass pieces getting inside the device and causing permanent internal damage to the device can't be ruled out. To keep away from such type of damages, it is prudent to get your iPhone covered by a good quality crystal film. The film would keep the iPhone's inner glass unharmed in case any such accident takes place. Nevertheless, if the damage has already been caused, the best solution is to go for broken iPhone screen repair that is nowadays offered at almost all the authorized iPhone repair shops in the city.
As previously mentioned, your iPhone screen is exceedingly brittle. It, in fact, serves as the control board for the little gadget. For that reason, if your iPhone screen gets smashed to an extent where you aren't able to use it anymore, your iPhone would become nearly useless. Even in case of the slightest crack on your iPhone screen, the device might lose its ability to function at the optimum level. This is merely because dirt and dust enters the device through the crack and messes up the device's internal circuits in the long run. This is the reason why immediate cracked iPhone screen repair is so important. Considering the extent of damage a broken screen can cause to your iPhone in future, if ignored, it is sensible enough to go for cheap iPhone screen repair immediately.

Until now.

Star Trek: Discovery‘s ongoing court battle regarding a tardigrade-inspired creature has ended in the show’s favor.
“Tardigrades’ rights to be kickass water bears hardcore enough to survive in space’s vacuum just got defended by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second City Circuit. Oh, and that Star Trek: Discovery’s use of one of the creatures didn’t infringe copyright, ending a legal battle that’s been brewing since the show’s first season.”

Nokia 4.2 Review: One Big Flaw
New Post has been published on https://bestedevices.com/nokia-4-2-review-one-big-flaw.html
Nokia 4.2 Review: One Big Flaw
"The Nokia 4.2 has many advantages, but it is affected by the processor."
Good battery life
Nice design and build quality
Notification light, NFC and a dedicated Google Assistant button come in handy
Android One means 2 years of quick updates
Affordable
Slow performance
Slow camera, mediocre photos in low light
Doesn't work with Sprint, Verizon
Micro USB connection
The Nokia 4.2 was a roller coaster ride. My first test device suffered from constant jerking and freezing, which made using the phone a hair-raising affair. The second device delivered a significantly improved experience, but it doesn't prevent this $ 189 phone from making several compromises.
Affordable phones have to make sacrifices, but the problem is with the competition. Motorola makes a phone with a much better performance for just $ 10 more: The Moto G7 Play. It also has the more convenient USB-C port, in addition to a decent camera, excellent battery life, and an almost standard Android experience.
The Nokia 4.2 from HMD has a lot to offer. The camera is slow, but can be used in broad daylight. The price doesn't look good (in a good way), the battery life is amazing, and I love the notification LED that circles the power button. It is also an Android One phone, so updates are guaranteed for two years. But it all comes down to performance and it can be frustrating.
Compact design, average display
The Nokia 4.2 is not like a budget phone. In comparison, the Moto G7 Play looks and feels very cheap. The Nokia 4.2 has a metal unibody with a polycarbonate frame and the back is protected by glass. This means that the likelihood is that repairs will be needed after a fall, but the phone will also feel more substantial.
A quick note on color. I recommend the Pink Sand over Black option. It is much more attractive and highlights the phone.
The back glass is a fingerprint magnet that you wipe regularly. Speaking of fingerprints: There is a fingerprint sensor here. It may be a little slow, which matches the Nokia 4.2.
You get a headphone jack at the top, a micro USB charging port at the bottom, a special Google Assistant button on the left and a volume rocker and an on / off switch on the right. The lack of a USB-C charging port is disappointing. Many other products have USB-C ports, from MacBooks and iPad Pros to Windows laptops and most Android smartphones. It is ideal to take only one cable with which everything can be charged. The $ 200 Moto G7 Play has one. Why couldn't HMD add it here?
The processor of the Nokia 4.2 paralyzes the phone.
The headphone jack is a welcome addition, and you should use it or use Bluetooth earphones because the bottom speakers aren't loud. However, the audio quality is decent. The buttons around the phone are clickable and the dedicated Google Assistant button is useful if you use the assistant a lot (you can turn it off, but you can't remap the button).
My favorite feature is the power button, which lights up when you get notifications. This is a good thing because the Nokia 4.2 does not have an always-on display when it is not being charged (due to the lack of an OLED screen). It looks good in the dark. It would have been nice to adjust the color, but you stick to white.
I like how compact the Nokia 4.2 feels. The screen is only 5.71 inches tall, which may sound big, but since the frames are narrow, a lot of screen is included in a small package. The rounded edges make the phone more comfortable to hold and the glass feels smooth.
The Nokia 4.2 (above) against Pixel 3a. Julian Chokkattu / Digital Trends
The HD + LCD screen is nothing to write home about. It is colorful and sharp (resolution 1,520 x 720) if you look at it from a reasonable viewing distance. Take a closer look and pixels are visible. It is a little dark, which makes it difficult to read the screen in broad daylight, and the black levels are not as satisfactory as with an OLED screen.
At the top is a drop notch in which the selfie camera is located. The phone still has a "chin" or bottom bezel, but the front design makes the Nokia 4.2 look more modern (and is slightly better than the Moto G7 Play).
Manageable performance
The Nokia 4.2 processor holds everything back. It is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. While 32GB is average for such an affordable phone, you'll want to use the microSD card slot since my 101 installed apps (including preinstalled apps) have reached 86 percent of the allocated memory.
Julian Chokkattu / Digital Trends
My first review device frustrated me endlessly because I was hanging up and freezing when I used the phone. This turned out to be a problem with the device. The second model didn't have many of these problems.
The performance is decent. Expect stuttering here and there as you scroll through apps like Twitter and Instagram, but it's bearable. Games like Pako: Forever and Breakneck ran admirably, with just a few skipped frames here and there. I was able to do most of the tasks that I would do with a flagship smartphone. It just took a little longer.
Opening an app takes a few seconds. This also applies to loading a game, sharing an image or turning on the phone. There were moments when I had to quickly search for something on Google Maps and I was frustrated with how slow the phone took to give me what I wanted. This is not always the case, but usually when I juggle between some apps.
Here are the benchmark results:
AnTuTu 3DBench: 77.060
Geekbench 4 CPU: 896 single core; 3,313 multi-core
3DMark Sling Shot Extreme: 493 (volcano)
These values are below the Moto G7 Play with the superior Snapdragon 632 (as well as the Moto G7 Power). My colleague had no performance problems with the Moto G7 series when testing – everything worked smoothly. Unfortunately, the Nokia 4.2 will inevitably frustrate you at some point.
Android One
I love the HMD phones because most of them run the Android One program. You receive at least a two-year guarantee on Android software and security updates. These updates are also deployed quickly, so you hardly have to wait after Google introduces them. In comparison, Samsung Galaxy S9 owners had to wait six months for the company to bring Android Pie to the phone.
The benefit of updates means that the phone stays secure, you get new features, and bugs and problems are more likely to be patched. HMD beat Motorola here. Motorola offers barely a year of Android updates for its phones – the Moto G7 Play will only get Android Q and not much more.
Julian Chokkattu / Digital Trends
Android One doesn't just mean quick updates. You get standard Android that is clear, simple and user-friendly. Apart from pre-installed Google Apps, there is no bloatware. There is even NFC on board so you can use Google Pay (another plus over the Moto G7 Play).
While the software on Nokia 4.2 is a positive experience, I encountered an error. If the phone remains alone and in standby mode, it can sometimes disconnect from the WLAN. When you turn the screen back on, the connection will be restored, but it's a problem that I couldn't solve. We also noticed this bug with the Moto G7 series, so there is a possibility that it is Android related and not device specific.
Slow camera
The Nokia 4.2 has a dual camera system on the back – a 13 megapixel lens paired with a 2 megapixel depth detection camera. The camera may be slow to start and the shutter may take some time. For this reason, you must be quiet when trying to take a photo to avoid a blurry result.
Julian Chokkattu / Digital Trends
But with good lighting, the Nokia 4.2 can be capable. Dealing with high-contrast scenarios with HDR is decent, the details are solid and the colors look natural. A typical example? The picture of the ship in New York City and the photo of my dog lying on my bed. They are impressive for a $ 189 phone.
As usual, the quality of the camera deteriorates in low light conditions. Images are grainy. While I had to remain silent beforehand, you have to be as still as a statue in low light. I've seen better results with Pro mode in the camera at night, but not everyone will understand how to use manual controls.
Portrait mode works well in good lighting, but any exposure to light, including indoor use, can cause pictures to look bad. Focusing is difficult in these situations and photos never look so sharp. HDR never seems to work as well in portrait mode.
Sample photos from Nokia 4.2
The 8 megapixel camera on the front works well, but has a problem with high-contrast scenarios. In the selfie picture of me, the sky is completely blown out. The selfie photo in portrait mode is better because the exposure is accurate with no blown out areas and there is a nice bokeh effect.
It's a powerful camera that takes a negative turn in low light, like all low-cost phones. However, you have to work with the camera to stay extremely still, which is annoying. It's comparable to the Moto G7 Play, although I think the Nokia 4.2 does a little better in quality.
Good battery life
Finally, we come to the best part of the Nokia 4.2. Never in my time checking the phone did I worry that it would die on me. The 3,000mAh battery isn't large, but with low power specifications and a low-resolution screen, it's enough to keep the phone buzzing for more than a day.
In heavy use, the phone reaches about 20 or 30 percent by midnight. With light to moderate use, the juice is retained for a second day, although charging may be required until noon.
While I was satisfied with the battery in real tests, the Nokia 4.2 did not do so well in our battery test. I played a 1080p YouTube video with maximum screen brightness over WiFi, and the Nokia 4.2 only survived 7 hours and 38 minutes. It's a decent time, but the Moto G7 game lasted more than 9 hours and the $ 250 Moto G7 Power stayed alive for almost 14 hours.
Aside from the battery test, most people will be more than happy with what the Nokia 4.2 can offer here. It's just a shame that a micro USB cable is required for charging.
Price, availability and warranty information
The Nokia 4.2 costs $ 189 and is available from Amazon and Best Buy. It only works in GSM networks, so you can use it on network operators such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless and Metro by T-Mobile. It doesn't work in CDMA networks like Verizon or Sprint.
HMD offers a standard one-year warranty that protects the phone from manufacturing defects one year after the date of purchase.
Our opinion
The good looks of the Nokia 4.2, the excellent battery life, the decent camera and the fast Android updates are slowed down by a weak processor. It is capable, but there are better alternatives.
Is there a better alternative?
Yes, the Moto G7 Play. It has many of the same specs as the Nokia 4.2, from the 3,000 mAh battery to 3 GB of RAM, but the processor is what drives it. The Snapdragon 632 is much more powerful and won't frustrate you. So I think the G7 game is the better buy for just $ 11 more at $ 200.
It depends on whether you want to choose longer software support instead of performance as these Motorola phones only deliver an Android version update (Android Q), while the Nokia 4.2 will also get Android R next year. While we usually praise phones that promise software updates for two or more years, I think the significant increase in processor performance gives the Moto G7 Play the edge.
If you spend $ 250, you can buy the Moto G7 Power, which has a larger screen – but you get the same performance as the Moto G7 Play. Better still, the 5,000 mAh battery means it's a two-day phone.
If you want to stay with the Nokia brand, it's worth spending $ 300 on the Nokia 7.1. It has good performance, the same Android One software, and a capable camera. If your budget is a bit higher, Google Pixel 3a should be on your list as it only costs $ 400.
For more information, see our guide to the best cheap phones.
How long it will take?
The Nokia 4.2 is in glass so you should get a case to make sure it doesn't tear through a drop. It is also not waterproof.
On the plus side, the phone gets two years of Android version and security updates, so it should take at least two years. This is the case if the performance does not deteriorate by then.
Should you buy it
No. A Qualcomm 600 series processor in the Nokia 4.2 would have changed history, but the Snapdragon 439 won't cut off if you can buy a better performing phone for just $ 11 more.
