Abigail DeVille’s “Light of Freedom” installation in Madison Square Park is a call to action, featuring the Statue of Liberty’s torch. It evokes 11 Angolans brought to New Amsterdam in 1626 by the Dutch West India Company. In 1644, they successfully petitioned for their freedom and were later granted land to farm just south of the future Madison Square Park. “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” affirms Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in Paris by the UN General Assembly in the early hours of December 10, 1948. From Times Square to Madison Square, NYC, two symbolic monuments. Protests against racism and police violence have reignited the debate over Confederate statues and cities are taking steps to remove them, including Robert E. Lee’s statue in Richmond. Created in response to Confederate monuments, and commissioned by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Kehinde Wiley’s “Rumors of War” was on display on Times Square last Fall before being moved to its permanent home at the Museum in Richmond. Krzysztof Wodiczko’s installation “Monument”, a commission for Madison Square Park on display from January to May, was another reflection on the issue. #tbt watercolors, October 2019 and May 2020 #civilwarmonument #changethenarrative #kehindewiley #rumorsofwar #vmfa #timessquarearts #richmond #richmondva #Monument #Wodicsko #KrzysztofWodiczko #interrogativedesign #publicart #MadSqArt #madisonsquarepark #admiralfarragut #nycart #newyorkart #artinthepark #watercolor #fredericlere (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBAvvfunSe9/?igshid=1ui7jevi5i48n

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)
The summer public art installation in Madison Square Park will feature 6 sculptures by artist Diana Al-Hadid and will be up from May 14th, 2018 through September 3rd, 2018. The installation, entitled Delirious Matter, is the first major public art project for the Brooklyn artist (who was born in Syria).
The exhibit will feature 2 large walls and additional sculptures. See rendering below from www.madisonsquarepark.org/mad-sq-art/diana-al-hadid:
From the artist: “I am thrilled to have my first large-scale public project on the lawns and in the reflecting pool of Madison Square Park. This is the first time my work will be made and seen at this scale. It’s my largest project by far and my largest audience. It’s a tremendous honor to be a part of the incredible history of art in the Park.”
The sculpture is part of the Madison Square Conservancy’s groundbreaking Madison Square Art public art program. Each season there have been thought-provoking sculptures, structures, video and audio art throughout the park by the most prominent artists in the world including Antony Gormley, Orly Genger, Iván Navarro, Jim Campbell, Richard Deacon, Tadashi Kawamata, Teresita Fernández, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, William Wegman, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Jaume Plensa, and Sol LeWitt.

“Monument”, Krzysztof Wodiczko’s commission for Madison Square Park closes tomorrow night, Sunday. So glad I had a chance to see his powerful tribute which gives a voice to twelve refugees, “unacknowledged civil war heroes”.
