06*SWORD • Folklore Friday • In one of his nocturnal walks Thorin finds a sword in the Black Forest. In this forest everything is gray and colorless. But around the sword ... everything seemed to have life and color. ▪ Excalibur is the magic sword of King Arthur, attributed to the sovereignty of the whole of Britain. It is part of the folklore of that people, just as Saci is part of our folk stories. The problem arises when some scholars point out that the legend would be true. In every region of Brittany there is a different version of this myth, but in general there is a common lineage: the young man who draws from the stone a mighty sword that lay there. The name Excalibur apparently originates from the Welsh word "Caledfwlchs", which is the combination of the words "battle / hard" and "rape". The author Monmouth, translating the myth into Latin translated to "Caliburnus", influenced by the Latin word "chalybs", which meant "steel." This translation was made early in the 13th century and then won the world. Caledfwlch appears first in various Welsh mythological works, such as sagas, poems, prose and chorus. It seems to be a very important artifact for this ethnic group. Historians and teachers of medieval English literature point out that the term "Caledfwlchs" appears hundreds of times in various short stories between 950 and 1350, not just in King Arthur's plot. But we already know how Caledfwlch became Caluburnus. But what about Excalibur? Simple. This happened with the French translations of the British sagas.
