something exploded vaguely to their left. dick's hands went to his waist and his lips pursed absentmindedly as he assessed the damage around them. GOOD NEWS is they weren't apart of the wreckage. BAD NEWS? everything else kind of was. between everything that was charred to finish or was CURRENTLY on fire, yeah the good news reel was going to be more of a vine. however, dick likes to think they're in the ballpark of good news. at the fence, maybe. his foot scuffs the peeling floor. in the parking lot, even. " yeah. " dick blew a breath out, clean up was going to SUCK. " how about good news-adjacent? good news' second cousin. " a beam broke. crashed to the floor in a spectacular splay of dust and battered remains and dick winced. only a little. yeah, maybe he had less for his case than he'd previously disclosed and maybe the hunt was going to be more like looking for a match in a firestorm. everything is information, and even if this turned out to be a pretty expensive bust, at least they know they were pulling on the right strings. " the good news is we know he's NOT here. " but, yeah maybe he needed to consult a dictionary. dick's hands move to scout the remains, but doesn't go very far. they won't get much, dick knows that, but zatanna's powers were more complex than he could ever understand. he squints a bit at some of the lightly smoldering stacks and asks in her direction, " do you see anything? "

                    it was too late. they were out of options. his arrogance has caused their enemy to grow too powerful. if he simply listened to her in the first place , they wouldn't be in this mess. he wouldn't be making the choice he's forced to make. nimue had unleashed dark magic upon them , pulling creatures from the darkest depths of the void. if this was the merlin of the past , he would dispel it with ease. if he wasn't so focused on protecting her , he could carelessly inflict his power back to their enemies. no , he couldn't blame zatanna. if it weren't for her , they wouldn't be this close to winning. but they were also close to losing.

                    the promise her father made with him echoed in his mind , fuelling the panic that caused his hands to tremble. his ears ached with the trembling around them , his hands raised to project a barrier around them. if he were to drop it now , the raw power beaming onto them would rip them apart. he couldn't let that happen , not because he promised , but because he cared about her. ❝ we're not arguing about this , zee !   ❞ merlin's posture falters slightly , dropping him to one knee as he attempts to split his focus. with great risk , he lowers one hand to put the entire weight onto one arm. his body turns a little , eyes blinking through the heat & turmoil & sweat to gaze at her. the now free hand resting on her shoulder as his lips smile solemnly. ❝ you have to survive. you are the future of magic.   ❞ a pause , his body wincing with the sheer weight blasting down. ❝ i'm so proud of who you have become. please ... get to safety.   ❞

TIME in gotham is something that is unforgiving , and never quite heals one in the way one would like. the streets congested as umbrellas opened , and the smell of rain was constant. looking out window bruce's brow creases as he finds that getting lost within the crowd is something that is appealing to him more and more to him. the lounge dimly lit as there were those who moved within the space and sparked conversation that was laced with sharp tongues. each keen to find a moment of weakness from the other and POUNCE!

shoulders haunch as elbows are leaned upon bar and he asks for another club soda. he stays in that stance for a few moments more ; continuing to watch the rain fall as the crowds became more determined with each step.

club soda placed down by bartender as long fingers go to reach for the glass , and as he goes to remove himself from bar he feels a collide. head turns first as body follows , and as he turns he is stunned no - dumbfounded by who he sees. eyes widen as that grey gaze is still filled with an tangible sadness , and mouth drops ever so. his efforts to control his expression temporary hindered. it takes him a moment to compose himself. mouth closing as he blinks through his surprise.

i don't know what to say , time itself feels suspended as i just stare. she's from another life , another time , and now ? now i feel as if i'm being haunted by a past that feels dreamlike - these memories clouded by a loss that i would never get over. breathe , i remind myself , breathe. doing exactly that as i inhale , and allow my eyes to soften and my tongue to wet my lower lip. that glass in my hand so badly needed as i clear my throat. i manage a ❛ What, not happy to see me? ❜. it comes out clumsily , and boyish in nature. at her words i then allow a smile , and that smile is inviting in nature. it has to be.

' long ? ' the words said with an exhale of a slight laugh , ' i think i'm shocked ... you back here ? ' emphasizing the 'here' as fingers then go to rake through honeyed hair that has a tinge of brown , ' i don't know why but i just thought you'd never come back to gotham '
