Almost 10 years ago, I drew Whoopee as a fierce Amazonian defeating a rat soldier. That was who Whoopee was. Not a day went by without a cockroach or mice, or the occasional huge rat lying dead in front of our bedroom door. Many years later, Whoopee has grown a lot older and weaker, but remains dignified and respected. A mentor to two young and fierce dachshunds who continue the noble (but gory) battle against evil house pests. I posted a few months ago an illustration of a "caveman" from the Lascaux caves (There were no depictions of humans in the Chauvet caves) and a figure drawn in the Binangonan-Angono petroglyph style in preparation for an art activity for my young students about the first artist in history - the caveman! We talked and looked at photographs of cave drawings, discussed how simple they looked yet still identifiable as the creatures the cavemen were trying to depict. We also read a children’s book about cave paintings to put them on the mood and mindset for the actual drawing activity. And then, I told them: Imagine you are a living in a cave somewhere in the Philippines twenty thousand years ago, during the time when animals that are considered endangered now were still plenty and thriving, how would you draw them? We started with a tarsier, learned to identify its distinguishing figures and practiced how to make shapes and lines to represent them, after which a pangolin, then another… For animals that were not familiar to the students, it was also an opportunity to learn more about them. Pretty soon, all the students were creating their own colorful menagerie. Here’s my preliminary set of demo “cave painting” animals I used during the class. Pugito is a very shy boy who has hidden under Tako, an octopus, for as long as he can remember. In fact, no one remember what Pugito looks like (Some has even come to believe that the octopus’ face is Pugito’s!) Tako does everything for him, as long as he gets to see the world. Can Pugito live the rest of his life depending on his octopus for everything? What will happen to Pugito if all of a sudden, he gets separated from Tako? I grew up reading Edward Lear’s nonsense rhymes, reducing the house copy of the complete collection into a tattered book of loose pages. I loved his humorous poems and whimsical drawings. So, it came as a wonderful surprise to realize that Edward Lear was actually one of the best naturalist painter of animals and birds ever, even having a parrot named after him! He was a very good landscape painter as well, effectively capturing the various sights he has visited from around the world. Having recently visited the National Museum for Natural Sciences, I was reminded of a secret childhood dream: to become a naturalist! It’s a wonder how it’s a profession that effectively combines one’s love of studying nature and accurately depicting it through art. The second children’s book illustrator for my classes is Beatrix Potter, who’s not only famously known for her illustrated books like “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, but has contributed greatly to the natural sciences (particularly mycology, the study of mushrooms). Her love for plants and animals (especially her pets) truly shows through the many characters she created, which were animated and anthropomorphized versions of the animals but are still accurate almost anatomically correct depictions. My art classes started again with a new batch of artists, this time focusing on famous children’s book illustrators. I kicked it off with my most favorite, Maurice Sendak! But just as controversial as this illustrator was with his stories and drawings, I too felt a bit of raised eyebrows from some parents of my students. Having drawn a ton of monsters as my creative outlet, I didn’t realize asking kids to draw cute monsters could be an issue.
