Watered Down Science Media  (inspired by Fake Moon Landing) Marley Journal 7
           The comics in todays reading assignment sparked an interesting conversation in regards to the transmission of scientific information. I cannot speak to the authenticity of the claims made in the comic; nevertheless I believe the message was very effective. It took a very complex scientific issue and made it easy enough for a 5th grader to interpret. While I do not mean to compare the general public to 5th graders, it is fair to assume that the average lay adult has not taken a pure science class since high school. The comic even goes further than most manuscripts, in terms of range of effectiveness, because it also covers a counter argument concurrent to the main argument.
             I think this trend of “watered down” science reaches further than this comic. On social media there is a growing trend of informational videos that present scientific information in easy to follow slide show type of picture assortments. This is again, not to compare the general public to children who need pictures and diagrams to understand science. But nevertheless these types of information flow can serve legitimate purposes when it comes to educating the public. Often on social media feeds it is easy to lose the true meaning in an ongoing debate. Videos and comics alike, that present information in this manner, offer a quick reference for people mid-debate.
             Another reason I believe these types of information presentations are useful is the notion that I could’ve read 4-5 of these comic strips, or watched 20+ videos, in the time it would take me to skim a full 20 page manuscript. Scientific manuscripts are very intimidating. They are laced with complicated words and sometimes-unnecessary details that the average person cannot ascertain. With watered-down science media, this is not a problem. The important thing is that the science is understood, not necessarily the method. That is as it pertains to the general public. Manuscripts serve purposes, just not in this realm.
             The only problem I see with watered down science is the risk that it becomes too watered down. I believe there is a happy medium between watered down science and an effective meaning. It is also important that watered down science is delivered by professionals in the field so that the information is reliable and accurate. The failure to do so is defeating the purpose of watered down science. All in all I believe that there should be a higher prevalence of watered down science in order to reach the general public.

Elana’s mind flashed back to her dream. The storm moves in spirals, repeating through history, disrupting and renewing knowledge. Across civilizations, knowledge has been lost and rediscovered—burned in the fires of conquest, hidden by those in power, and unearthed by those who seek the truth. This cycle is not new, and it will not end.
“Because it’s everywhere. In nature, in time, in history.” She exhaled. “And because it’s the pattern that survives.”
Selene hesitated, then asked the question neither of them wanted to voice. “When do we open it again?”
Elana glanced at the spiral one last time, her expression unreadable.
