“Ready to meet Lord Anubis?” asked Bridge.

The name was enough to make Chiar flinch. Anubis, Anubis, Anubis. The man was knee-deep in political spiderwebs. And it had been Chiar’s bad luck to get caught spying on him.

Bridge towered over Chiar, pulling on a pair of gloves. An added measure of caution— as if Chiar wasn’t already chained, kneeling, to the wall.

Chiar’s arms were throbbing, every nerve stretched to the breaking point. He’d lost feeling in his right arm at some point—the burns still an angry-red.

Bridge continued talking but all Chiar could hear was static.

Snapping, buzzing static.

An ocean of noise in his head, only the ocean was storming and gray and—

—everything dashed on sea-salt rocks.

Bridge held something in his hands. Looked like leather, but Chiar couldn’t tell. He didn’t care.

Maybe it was a whip.

Maybe it was something worse.

Maybe, maybe, maybe.

Maybe Chiar would kill Anubis when he met him.

That would be fun.

Enjoyable, even.

Anubis’s crimson-blood spilling over burned hands.

Cyan-blue sparking to life beneath his skin. Surging as he strangled Anubis.

He would wipe the blood off. Kick the body. Allow himself one tiny smile as he moved on to Bridge.

“Why are you smiling?” snapped Bridge.

The tiny smile faded. “Sorry.” A treacherous pause. The smile was gone, but Chiar lifted his middle finger to Bridge.

Bridge spun the leather thing in his hands. “I’m mighty tempted to cut that finger off.”

Chiar exhaled a puff of snapping-blue smoke. But his middle finger was no longer raised.

Bridge crouched down, letting Chiar take a good look at the leather-shape.

A noose. A collar.

Before Chiar had entirely wrapped his static-broken-thoughts around it, the leather was around his throat.

Tightened.

Tightened some more.

Gagging.

Bridge was gone, standing back as far as possible as Chiar heaved up blue.

Choking.

“I should have you muzzled. Ah, well, best to keep your mouth closed, cryptid. Or I will muzzle you, like the dog you are.”

Chiar looked up with watering eyes. All hints of a smile were gone.

Bridge kicked open the door to the cell. Torch-light pooled across the floor, thick and bright.

“Lord Anubis is approaching. If you make me look like a fool, I will make your life hell.”
