Last night was the Oscar’s of British hairdressing. The BHA awards 2018 was held at the iconic Grosvenor House, this is the night where the industry gets glammed up and you NEVER can be overdressed!
As we entered we were taken through an entrance with images of all the finalists of 2018, it sets the tone and the excitement of the evening begins. There is always a discussion about who is going to be the host for the evening. Ex hairdresser and morning TV favourite Rylan arrived to the stage with adoring screams from the guests.
The evening was sponsored by Schwarzkopf showcased its latest Young Artistic Team collection, directed by the lovely and super talented Tyler Johnston and Noughties rock band Scouting for Girls got the crowd on their feet while performing their hits ‘She’s So Lovely’ and ‘This Ain’t a Love Song’

Our ghd table was full of our creative artists including Adam Reed, Luke Benson, Leigh-Anne Regan and not to forget the amazing Charlotte Mensah This was certainly a night to remember as Charlotte received her silver lady and entrance to the hall of fame. This was a milestone for British Hairdressing as Charlotte is the first black women to enter the hall of fame. Diversity is finally happening in the industry!
Charlotte said to Vogue “To be the first black woman to win this award is such a wonderful feeling – and also very humbling”, says Mensah, fresh off the stage from collecting her version of the hairdressing Oscars last night. “I hope that I can act as an inspiration to the younger generation who might want to get into hairdressing – to show that anything is possible if you stay focused, work hard and follow your gut. Being able to fly the flag for afro and natural hair textures in the UK is such a huge privilege – it’s greatly rewarding to be recognised and celebrated by my peers.”
This lady is a try inspiration to me and the industry and I am so grateful and blessed to have Charlotte in my life.
Finally the moment we were all waiting for…. Who was going to be crowned the next British Hairdresser of the year? For the second year running the super talented Sally Brookes of Brookes and Brookes London took the trophy. Again this was an amazing moment for the girls!
