That Night

I keep pumping out art like it’s no tomorrow good god!

Ok so y’all need context for this one, this is based on a short story I wrote I wanna say a year or two ago focusing around the day Barley and Maria became a couple. Maria’s mother passed away when she was young, and today was the anniversary of her death. It’s unfortunate that that day happened to also be her mom’s birthday. The whole day Maria was going through different emotions, but was determined to keep them bottled to herself. At least until she got home. Barley unintentionally makes her crack and in the drawing, he arrives inside Maria’s home. He’s come to apologize for not being sensitive towards her feelings and not giving her enough space.

An excerpt from the short I wrote is provided below. It’s ehhh tbh but still probably one of my best written work within the last year or two.

Barley: Is it ok if I come in, or?

Maria: Oh! Right, I’m sorry.

Maria led him inside. Barley sat on her bed while Maria went back to work on her broomstick.

Barley: Hey, you’re making a new broomstick.

Maria: Yeah I finally got the motivation to work on a new one.

Barley: I remember what happened to the first one. You were so devastated. You acted almost Iike how you were today.

Maria: Yeah, I almost didn’t want to replace it. That broomstick meant so much to me.

Barley: I saw a name carved onto the broomstick. Elizabeth Morven. Are they a family member of your’s?

Maria: That’s uh.. my mother’s name.

Barley: Oh. Did she give it to you?

Maria: Mhm. She made that broomstick for me so I could have it when I’d set off for witch training.

Barley: That’s right. It’s what witches used to do when they were the age of 13. They’d set off on a year’s training to strengthen their magic. You were able to actually go into training?

Maria: Yes, I know other witches stopped doing that decades ago, but my family believed in keeping older traditions alive so they insisted I’d go train. My mom especially wanted to see me go. But.. she passed away before she could see that happen.

Barely: I’m so sorry, Maria.

Maria: I was trying to hold back my emotions because tonight’s the night she passed away.

Barley’s eyes widened. He knew she lost her mother when she was young, like how Barley lost his father, but he never knew how she passed away. She never really talks about it to anyone. He wanted to know what happened but at the same time, he didn’t want to press on in case he’d hurt her again.

Barley: Oh. You don’t have to talk about it, but I know what that feels like. You feel like you have to keep strong for the one you lost. You want them to be proud of the person you’ve become, you know? So you try to bottle in your emotions.

Maria: Mhm. You see this bracelet?

Maria held up her wrist so Barley could see the purple bracelet she was wearing.

Maria: The night my mother passed away, was also her birthday. My father gave mom a new bracelet as a present. As she took off her old bracelet, she handed it to me.

Maria held up her left wrist and showed the exact bracelet her mom gave her.

Maria: I wear it everyday ever since. So I can always keep her close…

Maria started to tear up, Barley instinctively gripping her hand.

Barley: I’m so sorry for your loss, Maria.

Maria: She made me feel safe and secure as a kid, and to lose her so suddenly terrified me. I lost that secure feeling. I worry everyday the same thing could happen to someone else, to my friends, to you, to grandma, to dad.. To me..

Barley hugged Maria as tight as he could.

Barley: Shh, Maria no. Don’t think like that.

He let her cry into his shoulder for a few moments until her sobs turned into small breaths.

Barley: What did you get her?

Maria: Hm?

Barley: Your mom’s birthday. Did you give her anything?

Maria: Hold on.

Maria lets go of Barley and opens a drawer on her desk. She takes out two large rings meant to be wrapped around the end of a broomstick.

Maria: I wanted to give her one to put on her broomstick and one to put on my future one when I got older. I might put mine on my new broomstick, but I don’t know where to put my mother’s.

Barley thought about it for a moment until he got an idea.

Barley: You got any string on you?

Maria: Yeah why?

Barley: You’ll see. Here, hand me the ring.

Maria hands the ring along with some rope. Barley carefully puts the string in the ring and ties the ends together, making it into a necklace. He motioned Maria to turn around and when she did he slipped the necklace around her neck.

Barley: There, now your mother’s right where she always was.

Barley points to her heart where the ring was.

Maria: It’s perfect. Thank you, Bar.

Barley: And you shouldn’t feel unsafe, Maria. You still got your father and grandma, your friends, and you got me. You shouldn’t worry about what’ll probably happen to us, you should be more focused on right now. And right now, from this day forward, I want to make sure you feel safe so I promise to protect you like your mother did. With your permission that is.

Maria smiled, new tears falling down her cheeks.

Maria: Of course. I can’t think of anyone better to fill that role.

Omg hear me out! Barley and Maria cosplaying as Peter Quill and Gamora!!

I feel like Guardians of the Galaxy would be one of Barley’s favorite movies (obviously lol) so one year for either Halloween or a convention, he practically begged Maria for the two to cosplay as them. Ofc she would give in.

Their ship name would either be “Marley” or “Baria”. Idk which is better.

Barley was the first person to figure out Maria was a witch. He catches Maria flying off on her broomstick from the corner of his eye and puts two and two together. The next time they’re alone, he turns into a huge fanboy “YOU’RE A WITCH!? YOU’RE A REAL LIFE WITCH! MY BEST FRIEND’S A WITCH!!!”

Before the events of the movie happen, Barley does all he can to protect Maria’s secret since magic isn’t normalized in society like it once was and Maria feared that her and her family would be ostracized for keeping their old traditions.

He even found the perfect flying route for Maria that was well hidden from the public eye so she could practice her magic all she wanted. There’s even a road there so Barley could always bring Guinevere along.

Barley ABSOLUTELY treats Maria like a princess! He’s her knight in shining armor! And Maria finds it so cute, she can’t get enough of it.

Maria is really good at making flower crowns. It’s not only a hobby of her’s, but during the days of Yore, witches would weave flower crowns out of the flowers they use for their magic. (Like the phoenix gem, flowers and gemstones are assistant elements needed to cast witch spells)

So she would definitely make Barley flower crowns sometimes, and he’s kept every single one of them. He doesn’t care if they’re not his style, Maria made them so they are now!

Sometimes when holding the door open for Maria, he’ll turn it into a whole bit to tease her. He like gives her an exaggerated bow and is all like “After you, fair maiden.” Maria goes along with it, but she isn’t as good of an actress so her giggles would slip out, and Barely finds it adorable as hell!

When Barley found out Maria also plays Quests of Yore, he invites her to one of Barley’s game nights with his campaign buddies. She’s shy at first, but quickly grows comfortable around them.

Barley isn’t just Ian’s cheerleader, he’s also Maria’s. Like Ian, she deals with a lot of social anxiety (girl same), but Barley’s constant encouragement helps her push through it. At the end he twirls her around and is all “I’m so proud of you, sweetheart! You did amazing!”

Barley would 100% call Maria “princess”. Can’t convince me otherwise.

Maria is scared to speak up when she’s in an awkward situation so Barley is the one to ask “do you wanna leave?”

They would be Guardians of the Galaxy fans. THEY WOULD! Barley would see a lot of himself in Peter Quill, same actor or not. Half of his music taste is literally Quill’s music taste! And Maria really loves Mantis. (If the two met they would be besties fr!!)

Barley has definitely made him and Maria their own mixtape!!

[I wrote these to sorta comfort myself because this was almost exactly what happened yesterday. I didn’t bring food prior to going to work and didn’t go on my break so I had to sit through a 6+ hour shift with no food until 6pm. By the time I did eat I was not satisfied I still felt hungry after. I’m okay now, dw <3]

Felix (to Madeline)

Felix shakes his head.

Felix: “No, this can’t be. We need to get some food into you, pronto!”

Madeline: “Fix-It, it’s not that-“

He takes her hand.

Felix: “No protesting against this one, lady love.”

Madeline blushes and lightly chuckles as she follows him.

Kristoff (to Mara)

Kristoff glances from one side to another.

Kristoff: “Okay, Sven would kill me for doing this, but if it’s for you I think he’d make an exception.”

Mara: “What’re you talking about?”

He reaches into a small bag stashed in his sleigh and hands Mara one of Sven’s uneaten carrots.

Kristoff: “Here”

Mara: “I’m not your reindeer, you know that right?”

Kristoff: “I know it’s not much, but you can stomach it until we find you something better.”

Mara sighs as she tries to hide her blush.

Mara: “Alright, only because I can’t let food like this go to waste.”

She takes a bite before glancing back up at Kristoff.

Mara: “You’re not gonna make me share this are you?”

Kristoff: “What? No, of course not! Unless you want to.”

Mara: “Not a chance, ice cutter.”

Barley (to Maria)

Barely re-routes Guinevere.

Maria: “Whoa!”

Maria manages to stabilize herself in the passenger seat.

Maria: “What’s going on?”

Barley parks Guinevere.

Barley: “Wait right here.”

Maria: “Wha-?”

Before Maria could fully argue, Barley has already left the van. After a couple moments, he comes back with a bag of take out.

Maria: “Bar..” *gasp* “I have to pay you back!”

Barley: “Nope, none of that. You already know it’s my absolute pleasure to get to take care of you.”

Maria: *blushes* “… Thank you, Barley..”

Barley: *in his quest voice* “Anything for my fair princess!”

Tadashi (to Makoto)

Tadashi: “Makoto, that’s only gonna do you more harm than good. You’re gonna get sick if you don’t eat something.”

Makoto: “I know.. I just.. I really need to get this final done by the end of the evening so I can’t go out right now.”

Tadashi: “… Right.”

Tadashi leaves Makoto’s apartment bedroom and enters her kitchen. Makoto pokes her head out the bedroom door frame.

Makoto: “Now what’re you doing?”

Baymax: “He is preparing food.”

The sudden sound of Baymax’s voice made Makoto flinch.

Makoto: *sigh* “‘dashi doesn’t have to do all this for me. He’s got assignments to get done too.”

Baymax: “If I may ask, are you concerned about Tadashi losing time he could be spending on college assignments instead of your health?”

Makoto: “Sometimes I forget how well Tadashi programmed you. I just.. I really wish I wasn’t burdening him with this.”

Baymax: “Makoto, you are Tadashi’s girlfriend.”

Makoto: “So? What does that have to do with anything?”

Baymax: “When you’re in a relationship with someone, your priorities start to shift to where you’re not only looking out for yourself, but your partner one as well. Tadashi loves you. He wants nothing more than for you to be healthy and cared for. He couldn’t properly focus on himself until he knows you’re alright. Because that’s what partners are and what they do.”

Makoto turns back toward Tadashi. He was giving her a warm smile. Makoto returned the smile, mouthing “thank you” before Tadashi went back to cooking.

Luigi (to Madeira)

Luigi: “Wait, you haven’t eaten today!?”

Madeira: “N-No, I-“

Luigi practically leaped over the counter of Madeira’s bakery and booked it to the kitchen. He grabbed one of the sample doughnuts and handed it to her, breathing heavily.

Madeira: “Luigi, oh my goodness! Are you alright?”

Luigi: “I’ll be” *pant* “much better” *pant* “if you eat this.”

Madeira: “Lu, that’s a sample. I can’t just-“

Luigi: “Please?”

He makes a lil puppy face. Madeira couldn’t resist it so she hesitantly grabbed the doughnut and took a bite.

Madeira: *softly smiles* “Thank you. You really know how to look out for others.”
