Mary Herbert
Mary’s work is an intuitive exploration of memory and sensation. Working at the intersection of drawing and painting, she creates subtle and enigmatic works which oscillate between the recognised and the unknown. Her current work is a series of dream-like pastel drawings and paintings formed of a composite of feelings, lived-sensation, unconscious processes and observation.
Mary Herbert creates luminous drawings of mountainous landscapes, underwater scenes, forests on fire, spectral figures, and ghostly architecture, often working with soft pastels. To achieve her signature soft-focus effect, Herbert applies the pastels with a tissue rather than drawing directly onto the paper. Herbert’s recurring motifs, such as round pools and snakes, have been compared to the archetypes in Carl Jung’s philosophy of the collective unconscious. The artist works from sensation, memory, and observation, saying that she is interested in the nonlinear, cyclical time of dreams. Her influences include the visionary symbolist Agnes Pelton and the Polaroids of the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. The charged atmosphere has an uncanny yet strangely familiar quality, as if each scene might somehow be anchored in another kind of deep, distant memory.
