A Deep Dive Into Bodhi
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb. Photo via Saint Bodhi Music.
A self - proclaimed musical chameleon whose happy place is in her head with a little bit of tequila, Saint Bodhi is everyone’s favorite creative powerhouse.
Hailing from South Central, CA Bodhi’s unique form of storytelling is a reflection of her relationship with the universe, allowing her to tell intricate stories with clear messages and imagery. With beautifully tragic lyrics cascading through her soft, deep voice, it comes as no surprise that her influences come from artists like Nina Simone and Frank Ocean.
At the UMG/1824 Creators and Tastemaker Forum, Bodhi played a few unreleased songs for us. The first, titled Heaven is Real describes her experiences in her hometown of South Central. Her raw storytelling as well as the instrumental production of the song makes you feel like you are driving with the windows down, which oddly enough is how Bodhi came up with the song herself. Part of her goals as an artist is to stay down to earth, taking people on a journey and “dive more into Bodhi” which the song does beautifully. It makes you feel as if you’re seeing what she does through a film reel.
Bodhi’s creativity and artistry make her a force to be reckoned with. Not only has she collaborated with artists like A$AP Rocky, Jaden Smith and Kevin Gates, but her creative artistry transcends music alone.
Through her journey of learning her power as a woman and solidifying the importance of Black women being taken seriously in their experiences, Bodhi has also written her own short story with Marvel. Black Panther No. 23, which released back in February focuses on mental health. Bodhi calls herself a “super nerd” but says that the jump from songwriting to comic writing was an anxious process for her. However, she says she’s “one of those artists that doesn’t have a problem trying everything” and is extremely hands on with everything that she does. (Her favorite superhero is Professor X by the way).
While talking about her next project, Anti-Social Bodhi reveres in her artistic projection, saying she feels like her songs come to life. She also talked about the importance of spirituality and meditation in her life and creative process; that while she’s sleeping or meditating “I get the answers to things I don’t know.” This only proves her notion that music is like therapy, enabling her to become more in tune with herself and the world around her.
Keep up with Bodhi and her music here!

Women Crush Wednesday Spotlight: Denitia
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb.
Hailing from upstate New York, Indie-Pop artist Denitia continues to maintain her title as “the epitome of soulful” (The Fader).
Melding genres from pop, rock, and everything in between, her music reverberates feelings of youth, peace and freedom. Denitia’s soft, beautiful vocals create almost a sense of intimacy; as if she’s right there next to you telling you that everything is going to be alright. Her latest album, Touch of the Sky, was accompanied by a short film for the title track and Place to Be was recently remixed by Pool Cosby; breathing new life into the hypnotic track.
Keep an eye out for what Denitia has coming next! You surely won’t want to miss it.

My Ladybird Moment (Significant Songs in Life)
Tumblr media
Written by Mary Ragheb. Graphic by James N. Grey.
(First of all I wanna give the credit for this title to Pablo, that was all their idea and honestly it works perfectly.)
I know I’m not alone when I say that music has carried me through my whole life - whether that was me singing along with the Jonas Brothers in my best friend’s bedroom in elementary school or staring up at the ceiling blasting My Chemical Romance through my headphones in true emo-kid fashion. But I have always had a weird sensitivity to sound. It could be the ADHD talking but hear me out. Songs for me are ultimately almost always attached to some specific memory or feeling, so much so that I don’t think there’s an album in existence that I haven’t cried to at least once.
So I guess this is my ladybird moment/a playlist of my life????
Let’s start with artists and then we’ll get into songs. This is important because I’m starting with literal baby steps here.
Firstly, there’s Umm Kulthum, one of the most decorated and well-known Egyptian singers ever. I spent much of my childhood listening to her sing on cassettes that my parents brought back from Egypt. Obviously I didn’t know how popular she was when I was a child, but even when I catch my dad listening to her in his little home office, I feel a sense of innocent comfort - almost like when my mom used to wrap a blanket around me on our yearly road trips to New Jersey.
Second of all, I have to give an honorable mention to both the Jonas Brothers and One Direction. I mentioned the JoBros earlier, and I know I’m not alone in how much their music brought us joy as kids. My family couldn’t afford to get us iPods, so I spent a lot of time at friends’ houses listening to them on their older sisters’ CD players or flip phones. You remember those swivel-y ones that had a trackpad like an iPod? Yeah those. (Also don’t talk to me if your favorite brother wasn’t Joe. I will die on this hill.) Now One Direction. I wish I was kidding when I say that my first concert was seeing them OPEN for Big Time Rush in 2011. I think that’s the biggest flex I hold to this day. While I cringe at old pictures of me clad in clothes with the British flag all over them, they were honestly my introduction to fandom culture.
Third, let's get into emo baby. I started high school in a whole new country, which to say the least was a difficult adjustment. Kids can be cruel and that’s true no matter where you are, but by 13 and after being the new kid 4 times up to that point; you kinda become a target. And as cliche as it is, it’s what drove me to fall down a hole of Mayday Parade, Paramore and (drum roll please) - yep, you guessed it, All Time Low. Everyone who knows me knows that I love this band with my whole being. Now, there are a slew of reasons as to why. Obviously Therapy is one of them because my god I still cannot listen to that song without crying. Don’t Panic also came out when me and my family flew back to Boston after living abroad for a year. I remember driving through our old neighborhood while Outlines blasted through my headphones - ironically saying “I’m half remembered halfway across the world, twice removed from my second home.” But above all the intricate stories and lyrics that Alex has written over the years, ultimately they are the reason I met one of my best friends. That seems to be a common theme with me. I’ve taken it as the universe telling me to never stop listening to music. Like, ever.
Finally, let’s all get ready to give the greatest round of applause for my college introduction into K-Pop. To be honest, I blame Halsey for this. I have loved her since I heard Room 93 (and realized I was not straight, thanks Ashley), and I can pretty much recite every album she has front to back. So when I saw them work with BTS I figured, “okay, I guess I can get on board with this.” The best way I can describe it is that Simpsons meme where the kid goes “haha I’m in danger.” K-Pop fans have this theory that your “comfort group” comes to you when you’re ready and I don’t know how they hit the nail on the head but they’re not wrong. I didn’t have an ideal college experience whatsoever, I had a lot of trouble making friends because I honestly didn’t talk to anyone (my own fault, I know). And yet somehow when I started listening to BTS, I made a whole community of friends on the internet and ended up meeting two of my best friends who just happened to walk into my job. If anyone has an existential explanation for all this please let me know before I go ask Namjoon myself.
Okay now that we’ve finished that, let’s get into songs. These are in no particular order, but I guess a common theme that I can attribute to them is power. Not to sound like a tyrant or anything; power to me comes in all forms. The power of love, strength, dominance, and happiness.
Is There Somewhere by Halsey (Room 93)
When I say I feel like I’ve grown up alongside Halsey, I’m not kidding. Not only was this song the prelude to my coming out, but seeing her artistry develop since 2015 has made me feel like a greater part of something. Too cheesy? Ok moving on.
Jasey Rae by All Time Low (Put Up or Shut Up)
This isn’t going to be the only All Time Low song on this list for sure, but it is one of my absolute favorites. If the last chance I got to hear it live was at the 10 year So Wrong It’s Right Anniversary in 2017, then I can die content. I maintain that All Time Low don’t have a bad song in their discography, but Put Up or Shut Up is such a big comfort album for me that I still get the same tingles that I felt when I listened to it at 15.
Don’t Lean on Me by The Amity Affliction (Let the Ocean Take Me)
The Amity Affliction is another one of those bands that marks a really crucial point in my life when I had to reconcile with my mental health. Not to get super emo or anything, but having every single emotion and painful feeling laid out (or screamed out, thank you Joel) soothes the numbness that I had accepted for my pain. Honestly, you could put this song on and I would still scream “LET THE OCEAN TAKE ME” at the top of my lungs like I did at Warped Tour in 2018.
Going to Hell by The Pretty Reckless (Going to Hell)
I’m sure having The Pretty Reckless on this list surprises absolutely noone, but I really think that this album threw me into full blown feminist rage. I have never been one to dilute my feminism to make men more comfortable, but after seeing Taylor Momsen clad in leather singing in front of a band of all guys and commanding all the attention in the room (not to mention her VOICE) - I just wanted to be as badass and confident as her.
Breed by Nirvana (Nevermind)
Is anyone surprised that Nirvana also made the list? Another moment of feminist rage. Have you ever had a guy interrogate you about a band or show or literally anything that non-men enjoy because he thinks there is no way you could possibly REALLY enjoy it? Yeah, I got that a lot in high school. And still now as a grown ass woman but that’s not the point here. I watched a lot of music documentaries during my last two years of high school, mainly about the 80’s and 90’s and the evolution of grunge, hence fueling my love for documentaries even more. And as always, girls cannot seem to like anything without being scrutinized for it so my interest in Nirvana was met with a lot of “yeah but you don’t actually listen to them right?” So it seemed appropriate for my response to that to be to latch onto a song that literally starts with “I don’t care, I don’t care, I don’t care.”
Brick by Boring Brick by Paramore (Brand New Eyes)
Paramore also comes as no surprise here since I profess my love for miss Hayley on a daily basis. I could have picked any song from Paramore’s discography; they are the ultimate encompassment of comfort and happiness. But Brick by Boring Brick made (and still does make) me feel like running through a field in the rain wearing a torn up down and screaming at the top of my lungs.
Dear Maria, Count Me In by All Time Low (So Wrong, It’s Right)
Ah yes, the song that shoots serotonin straight through my veins. The first time I ever saw All Time Low, I was lucky enough to be able to photograph them. And even with a camera strapped to my side, I did not hesitate to jump up and crowdsurf the second the show was coming to an end. I’ve flown to Florida, California, Arizona, and New Jersey and every single time Dear Maria comes on something just takes over the crowd. It’s one of the few times I have seriously felt like family around a bunch of complete strangers. Even when I lost my earring, got dropped straight on my back and passed around the same water bottle across like 50 people. (pre-COVID huh?) I think my favorite Dear Maria memory had to be the last All Time Low concert I went to in December 2020. I was crowdsurfing at the same time another girl got thrown up, and to make sure we didn’t crash into each other we instinctively reached for each other and held hands until we were both over the barricade. I don’t think any moment in live music has felt more precious to me than that. (Also the fact that everyone pointed out that it sounds like an anime intro just makes it even more fitting.)
Magic Shop by BTS (Love Yourself: Answer)
When I say that BTS inject love into their music, I mean this song in particular. After Map of the Soul: Persona came out in 2019, I spent the following weeks listening to their entire discography all the way back to 2013. As soon as Magic Shop came on, I burst into tears before I even got a chance to read the translation (I cried more after I read the translation too.) BTS have perfected the concept of a comfort song and Magic Shop is the perfect example of it. It feels as if for 4 minutes and 36 seconds, you are safe. Honestly though, I could probably throw every single BTS song into this list. They have brought me peace, reassurance, friendships and genuine happiness during a time that I least expected, but needed it the most.

Lucy Calcines on her ‘The Voice’ journey, “Pop-ton” and what she’s been baking in quarantine
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb.
After accruing over 16 million views on her blind audition, dubbing her one of the most watched contestants of all time on The Voice, Lucy Calcines has a plan of world domination with her own Latin flare. GBTRS caught up with her to talk about creating her own “Lucy-ness” in her music, breaking down language barriers and her baking adventures.
I noticed that you call your own meld of Pop and Reggaeton, “Pop-Ton”, which I think is brilliant by the way - how do you feel about the melding and almost redefinition of genres, especially in new wave artistry?
I would say that it’s really important to stay true to yourself and have your own style and try to do something that’s unique and makes you stand out. I wanted to portray my Latin culture, but also stay true to myself which is like, pop-commercial music. I kind of wanted to blend the two genres to be able to represent my culture but also to have my little bit of spice add my own Lucy-ness in there. I want to be able to stay trendy, while also staying true to what my type of music is and what I believe in.
When you were on The Voice, Will.I.Am stressed the importance of Latin music as well as the importance of you being on the show. How did that feel as a Latina woman, especially in front of such a wide audience?
To be honest, it was a moment I’m never going to forget. It was like all the hard work I had been putting in all these years finally got recognized and it really gave me a confidence boost because I had to be like “Okay, I believe in myself because Will believes in me and he believes in the type of music that I’m making, so I’m doing it right!” The fact that he supported my vision was really important to me and I think it really helped me to grow as an artist and become a better performer. It helped me believe in myself more, so I’m really grateful that he expressed himself in that way about me. I wasn’t expecting it, so I was really happy about it and super grateful.
I have to know, did he ever send that video of you singing to J Balvin?
He told me he did! So J Balvin knows about my existence now, hopefully we get a collab coming soon. I was super starstruck through! When he made me sing that synth line again I was like “hold up hold up I was not expecting this!”
From all of your performances, your go-to style seems to be super up-beat and dance-y. Is there any style that you’re curious to delve into or any that you’re particularly interested in other than those?
So, I also do ballads, I have my little romantic moments sometimes. I just didn’t have a chance to do that on the show because obviously my trademark was doing the upbeat songs and just performing and putting on a show; so I wasn’t really able to show that I can get romantic and you know, cry. I have some songs that haven’t been released yet that are more slow-jams. I also really like other urban genres like trap, so I’m trying to incorporate a little bit of everything and see what works best for me.
Is there any genre that’s like your comfort genre?
I would definitely say pop music, like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande vibes. That’s what I’m comfortable with to be honest, but I also love doing Latin music. I just feel like it’s harder for me because it’s in Spanish. I mean, Spanish is my first language, but I was raised listening to more commercial pop than Latin music so I didn’t really know how to write in Spanish. I only started about two or three years ago, so I’m still a bit like “oh does this sound too cheesy?” Because in English, it sounds good, but then when I write it in Spanish I tend to overthink it.
I love what you do with melding Spanish and English, it just flows so well together. Especially in the past few years with artists like J Balvin and Bad Bunny breaking into the United States more, language becomes less important and you just enjoy the music for what it is.
I totally agree, the language doesn’t even matter at this point. Even with BTS for example, they’re Korean and I LOVE them. I sing their songs in Korean and I don’t know what I’m saying but I just love it. Music speaks all languages, so I think it’s just important to make something that people enjoy listening to, it doesn’t matter what language it is.
Now that you brought up BTS, I legally have to ask who your bias is.
Jungkook!!
Beautiful okay let’s get back on track before we spend forever talking about BTS!!
Oh yes I know! I’m just so proud of them and I’m hoping and wishing I get to collab with them one day, when I’m a bigger artist. It’s on my bucket-list, so fingers crossed!
It’s been one hell of a year, what have you been doing to keep busy and positive? What are some hobbies you’ve picked up?
Well, I’ve been making a lot of music honestly, I haven’t really stopped. I’ve been writing and working on more content to post as regularly as I can. I’ve been working really hard, but when it comes to hobbies, I started baking. I’ve wanted to learn for a really long time because I love desserts! I could eat dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner; so I just started baking. It’s been really entertaining to be honest, I love it! That’s one thing that kind of takes my mind off things, which is weird because it’s a lot of effort but it relaxes me.
What’s your favorite thing to bake?
I think cakes. I baked my own birthday cake like two months ago and it was so pretty! I also baked a cake for the BTS album release for “BE” - I’m just baking cakes for whatever reason, whatever occasion; I don’t care I just wanna bake cakes!!
You were one of the most watched Voice contestants of all time, which congratulations by the way that is incredible! What can we look forward to from you in the future?
I’m releasing a lot of new music this year, so you guys should stay tuned for that! I’m just really planning on taking over the world hopefully... nah I’m joking. But I just wanna grow my fanbase more and just get my music out there to more people, so I’m just gonna keep releasing new content and new music. So stay tuned for that!!

Artists to Watch for 2021
Tumblr media
In the tumultuous year that has been 2020, it’s no doubt that all of us have had a rough ride. With live music still being on hold for now and much of the near future, there is a void that we all seem to have, waiting for the next time we can be surrounded by strangers all screaming lyrics at the top of our lungs. And while catastrophe doesn’t always breed opportunity, this year has given us boatloads of new music to listen to and new artists to discover. As we get ready to say good riddance to 2020, here are some of our team’s picks for artists that you should keep on your radar for 2021!
SHAED
Team Member: Elise
Genre: Indie Pop
Recommended Album: Melt EP Deluxe
“I've been following SHAED for years. They've already taken off a lot this year, but live shows are a big part of their successes. With the potential for live shows to come back next year and a debut album presumably in the works there is no way they won't be on the top next year. They've impressed me over and over again, they can only go up from here.”
Blackstarkids
Team Member: Olivia
Genre: Pop
Recommended Album: Whatever Man
“I heard BSK for the first time this year and their vibes are IMMACULATE. They are absolutely incredible- their sound is unique and fun, their personalities are funny and genuine and they really love what they do. Definitely an artist to watch because they're on the verge of something amazing.”
Kid Sistr
Team Member: Allison
Genre: Pop/Rock
Recommended Song: Simple Math
“It's no secret that TikTok has revolutionized the music industry in 2020. Out of the many artists I've discovered using the app, Kid Sistr truly stood out to me. The New York trio's dreamy pop-rock tracks have made their way onto many of my playlists since the release of their self-titled EP in July. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what's in store for Kid Sistr in 2021.”
Vulfpeck/ Joey Dosik
Team Member: Aliyah
Genre: Funk
Recommended Song: Running Away
“I discovered Vulfpeck last month & as a musician, their music is extremely fun to learn. Running Away has to be in my top 3 songs because of how soulful it is. Joey Dosik wrote it & that man has the voice of an angel.”
Nova Twins
Team Member: Moira
Genre: Rock
Recommended Song: Play Fair
“Nova Twins popped up on my radar recently thanks to some cool people in the alt scene on twitter and I've truly been obsessed with them ever since. Their sound is so much fun and makes me feel like I can take on anyone and anything whenever I listen. The duo rocks harder than most bands in the scene and the music slaps well after the first listen.”
TXT
Team Member: Mary
Genre: K-Pop
Recommended Album: minisode1: Blue Hour
“This comes as a surprise to noone but this year has thrown me ten-fold into even more K-Pop. TXT may be babies who I can fit in my pocket, but they have such a unique sound and artistic approach that I have no doubt they'll become a force to be reckoned with.”

Artist Feature: Rachel Ohnsman’s “Sparkle”
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb.
“Sparkle marks the final stage of my journey in recovery from sexual assault. It’s my way of saying that nothing and no one can hold me back. No matter what we’ve gone through, we all have the power to define our own story.”
Rachel Ohnsman’s new single, Sparkle, is a raw and personal anthem that exudes self-empowerment. Her ethereal vocals backed up by choir-like harmonies makes it feel as though she is the protagonist in her own movie, reaching a moment of self-discovery and acceptance. Single Review: “So What” by Dakota
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb.
“So What is not caring about the crazy world we live in and focusing all attention on the person you love... Taking risks is the fun part of a relationship and makes it even more special.”
Dakota’s new single, So What is a perfect encompassment of the carefree attitude she describes above. Her bubbly, soothing voice paired with an infectious beat that begs you to clap along makes for an instant summer hit. You can almost feel the warm sun beating down on you and the smell of the ocean as the song plays. And that’s a feeling that we all need, especially now. The song also features Gareth T., an aspiring producer and songwriter from Hong Kong, whose verse helps amplify the chill, summer-y vibe of the song.
With a five-octave vocal range and both performative and instrumental talent, Dakota is a power-house who continues to provide inspiration and empowerment through her art.

BangBangCon: The Live and BTS’s Powerhouse Fandom
Tumblr media
Written by Maryam Ragheb. Photo credit to Big Hit Entertainment/BTS
If it wasn’t for the pandemic, BTS would be wrapping up their world tour right now, and their biggest one to date at that. But unfortunately, here we are; trying to grasp at any semblance of what would be equivalent to a real live event. At the start of quarantine, BTS ran a free two-night concert series that encapsulated the final show of every major era they’ve had to date and titled it BangBangCon. On June 14th, they launched the live version of BangBangCon, an adorable reenactment of everything their live shows encompass.
Perfectly timed with their anniversary celebration titled FESTA, the performances swept through the group’s discography from O!RUL8,2? all the way to their latest release, Map of the Soul: 7. And lest we forget the adorable chibi versions of the group reminding us to get comfortable, grab a snack, and connect our light sticks. Entering through pink and purple colored doors and onto a pastel adorned set, leader Namjoon began the show by adorably changing the lyrics of Dope to “Hello, first time at Bangbangcon?” (instead of “first time with BTS?”). Transitioning from a cozy, home-like set to a full stage complete with pyro and LED projections, it felt as though they felt the same way we did; watching a full set in the comfort of our own homes and yet wanting to be part of something bigger than we are.
As someone who was planning on seeing BTS three times in a row this summer, I had a lot of anticipation for hearing Map of the Soul: 7 live. Don’t get me wrong, I never thought I would finally see the day that we heard Just One Day and Spring Day live ever again (which hurt by the way, I didn’t expect that much pain in one night); but I have been dying to hear a whole stadium scream “AYO SUGA” since January. As per usual, Namjoon and Yoongi did not disappoint me. Featuring a disco-aesthetic complete with grainy camerawork and choreography that was nothing short of adorable, Respect was indeed given the respect she deserved. (See what I did there? Okay, moving on.)
If a spinning stage to indicate transitions between subunits and the camera filter changing from black and white to color during Seokjin’s high note in Jamais Vu wasn’t enough, don’t worry, there’s more. A dark, forest-like set for their Black Swan performance with the members fully decked out in their System clothing line collaboration? A wall full of Army bombs lighting up like a rainbow while they performed a disco remix of Boy with Luv? Yes, give me all of it.
Despite the two-and-a-half-hour long show feeling like it went by in ten minutes, there was a sense of community as my friend and I stayed on the phone together all night watching the magic unfold in front of us. Not to say that I didn’t enjoy the previous BangBangCon, but this felt like something new. There was a sense that BTS had missed performing just as much as we had missed seeing them. And even through a screen, every raw emotion evoked felt just as real. Excitement, happiness, hurt; but most importantly, love. Love for a group that never fails to show their fans just how much they mean to them.
As BangBangCon swept through social media and took over Twitter trends, Army’s praises sung through from beginning to end. And to add another notch on the ever-so-powerful fanbase’s belt, BangBangCon accumulated a total of 756,000 viewers from 107 different regions. That’s enough to fill the Rose Bowl at top capacity, eight times over. The power and might of the fanbase not only shows how music can bring all these people together at the same point in time, but it highlights the special connection that BTS have with their fans. It’s a bond that isn’t merely hierarchical, it’s become a lifelong friendship.
Since then, BTS have not dared to slow down one bit, releasing a Japanese album titled Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey which features Stay Gold. The music video for the single premiered at the end of last month, showcasing glimmering gold specks of hope in the cold, dark rooms the members are trapped in; and ultimately ending with the full bloom of the barren tree that we all remember from Spring Day. The album also features Your Eyes Tell, a beautiful, emotional ballad written by the one and only Jungkook. Time to add this to the list of songs that instantly trigger my tear ducts (I’m looking at you, We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal.) And with a brand-new single coming out August 21st, BTS continue to show that their dedication and love for not only their art, but their fans, knows no bounds.
BTS’s BangBangCon is now available for VOD purchase through Weverse!!!
