Una piccola (ma significativa) nota tecnica: la compagnia denominata Mercury Songs Ltd, che è poi quella che detiene e gestisce i diritti dei brani solisti di #freddiemercury, ha un nuovo co-direttore che affiancherà Jim Beach: si tratta della figlia Matilda che, in effetti, da qualche tempo compare come co-manager anche sugli album dei #Queen (guardate le note di copertina di Outsider, ad esempio). Immagino che l'ingresso di Matilda Beach sia anche dovuto ai problemi di salute accusati dal padre che, speriamo, sia comunque in buona forma. Ovviamente della Mercury Songs continua a far parte anche #MaryAustin, in qualità di erede di Freddie Nessuna novità invece nelle società riconducibili direttamente ai #Queen: #johndeacon continua a far parte della Queen Music Limited, della Raincloud Productions Limited e della Goldfinch Productions Limited e della Queen Productions Limited. Az 1970-es évek elején Freddie változatlanul Maryvel élt együtt közösen bérelt lakásukban. Az összes ismerősüknek, sőt Marynek is egy átlagos, heteroszexuális kapcsolatnak bizonyult az, ami köztük volt. Aznap este rádöbbentem, hogy nekem is szerepet kell vállalnom ebben az egészben. Kezdett beindulni a dolog, és végignéztem, hogyan bontja ki a szárnyait. Csodálatos volt.” – emlékezett vissza Mary.

Freddie és Mary hamarosan találtak maguknak egy nagyobb lakást a Holland Road-on, amelyet 19 fontért béreltek. „Teljesen biztonságban éreztem magam mellette. Minél jobban megismertem, annál inkább önmagáért szerettem. Különleges ember volt, ritka az ilyen manapság. Egy dolog sosem változott, és ez a szeretet. Tudtuk, hogy megbízhatunk a másikban, és hogy biztonságban vagyunk egymás mellett. Sosem bántottuk volna egymást szándékosan.” – mesélte Mary. A beköltözésük után nem sokkal azonban valami megváltozott. Freddie titokban csalni kezdte a lányt.

In the early 1970s, Freddie continued to live with Mary in their rented flat. For all their acquaintances, and even for Mary, the average heterosexual relationship was what they were. Mary often accompanied Freddie to their shows and was forced to see that female fans were constantly around him.

“By then I was starting to feel like he was going to be a star. He was already on this road. He no longer need me. There were no tears in my eyes, it didn't bother me. I was glad it finally happened because he was so talented. When he came down the stage, all the girls were around him. They fully booked him. I would have just started but he hurrying after me. His career began to start and I watched he spread him wings. It was wonderful.” - Mary recalled.

Freddie and Mary soon found a larger flat on Holland Road, they rented for £ 19. “I felt completely safe with him. The more I got to know him, the more I loved himself. He was a special person, rare nowadays. One thing never changed, and that is love. We knew we could trust each other and that we were safe with each other. We would never have deliberately hurt one another.” - Mary said. However, soon after they moved in, something changed. Freddie started secretly cheating her.

Oggi è il compleanno di #maryaustin! Ho sempre avuto una grande stima nei confronti di questa donna, forse davvero l'unica persona fino ad oggi ad aver rispettato #freddiemercury, assieme alla sua famiglia ovviamente e ai #Queen. Una donna che ha sopportato l'inaccettabile, ovvero che l'uomo che amava andasse con altre persone, restandogli comunque fedele, almeno dal punto di vista emotivo. Per fortuna Mary una vita oltre Freddie se l'è rifatta, altrimenti ne sarebbe uscita devastata. Perché Freddie non è stato un santo, per niente, ed ha goduto dell'immensa fortuna di avere accanto una donna capace di amarlo anche dopo la morte. Ho apprezzato Mary ogni volta che ha fatto eliminare da Garden Lodge tutti gli oggetti e le scritte lasciate dai fans: fatevene una ragione, Freddie avrebbe detestato vedere la sua casa deturpata a quel modo. Mary in questi anni avrebbe potuto guadagnare pubblicando libri, rilasciando intervista e sfruttando un'esposizione mediatica che ha invece sempre rifiutato: non è da tutti. Spero che stia bene e che sia felice, nonostante il peso dell'eredità che Freddie le ha lasciato. Vi assicuro che non è facile, per niente. Freddie a 24. születésnapján, 1970. szeptember 5-én összeszedte a bátorságát és randira hívta Maryt, azonban a lány nemet mondott. Freddie nem fogadta el a nemleges választ, és addig próbálkozott, amíg Mary rábólintott. 1970. szeptember 30-án Freddie elvitte őt a londoni The Marqueeba, egy Mott The Hoople koncertre. Freddie teljesen lenyűgözte Maryt: „Még sosem találkoztam hozzá foghatóval. Velem ellentétben, ő nagyon határozott volt.” – mesélte később Mary.

5 hónappal később a szerelmes pár összeköltözött a kensingtoni Victoria Road 2. szám alatti garzonlakásba, amelyért heti 10 fontot fizettek, és velük tartott a két macskájuk is, Tom és Jerry. „Csak egy függönyre telt, úgyhogy azt a szobába tettük fel. Freddienek akkor nem volt valami sok pénze, úgyhogy ugyan úgy éltünk, mint bármelyik más fiatal pár. Vagy 3 évbe telt, hogy igazán beleszeressek. Még senki iránt nem éreztem így.” – mondta Mary. Brian így emlékezett vissza rájuk: „Freddie nagyon boldog volt Maryvel, nagyon szerették egymást. Azt hiszem fogalmazhatunk úgy, hogy Mary volt Freddie nagy szerelme.”.

Ebben az időszakban nyilván senki sem gondolta, hogy Freddie homoszexuális lehet, a kapcsolatuk elején Mary sem vette észre, hogy Freddienek homoszexuális hajlamai lennének. Nem sokkal később Mary bemutatta őt a szüleinek, azonban Freddie nem kevésbé hajlott rá, hogy bemutassa otthon az újdonsült barátnőjét. Hiába nevezte őt az élete párjának, valójában sosem szándékozta elvenni feleségül. A kapcsolatuk elején Freddie minden gondolata Mary körül forgott és tökéletesnek bizonyult számára ez a kapcsolat. Mary a barátja, a lelki társa és egyfajta anyafigura lett számára. Egyértelműen mélyen és szenvedélyesen szerette, de míg Mary feladta az életét Freddiért, addig neki ott volt a karrierje és a férfiak iránti vonzalma.
