America’s Team Alumni Q&A - Foster

Before Sunday’s playoff game, we’re chatting with UTA alumni who work for America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys!

Today we connect with Foster Naylor ‘13. Foster is a production assistant for the Dallas Cowboys. 

Q: What’s it like to work for the Dallas Cowboys? 

A: Working for the Cowboys is a lot of fun. The hustle and grind of being involved in an NFL season is an amazing challenge. The opportunities that it presents are even greater. From being in California for training camp for weeks at a time, to traveling to Mexico for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Calendar shoot, rarely is there a dull moment. 

  Q: How did UTA prepare you for your current position? 

A: UTA prepped me for long hours and hard work. It gave me a foundation of basic editing skills and afforded me the opportunity to experiment in a place I could comfortably get feedback and learn from my mistakes.

Q: At what point in the season did you realize it was going to be a special year for the Cowboys?

A: I work on a show called "Cover 4" and the talent recently had this discussion on air. I voted that the Green Bay game in week 6 of the regular season was the point when people started saying "Oh man, this team is a legit contender." To walk away from Lambeau Field winners with no Dez and missing some key guys on the defense, I thought that was huge.

Q: What is one fact about AT&T Stadium that most people don’t know?

A:  I don't know the exact number, but in the group tours they give a value in miles to represent how much ethernet cable is in the building. That kinda blew my mind.

Q: Does your job require you to work during games? Can you ever be just a fan?

A: I've had mixed responsibilities on game days over this season. Primarily I've been the boom operator for the audio end of a wireless set up we do for a weekly mic'd up segment on dallascowboys.com. I spend most of the game posted up behind Coach Garrett gathering audio between plays and trying not to get run over when the play comes to the sideline. I had the chance to operate a camera during the Detroit game. That was AWESOME.

Rarely do I get to be a fan. When I tell people what I do for a living they get this look of awe in their eyes like I'm on the sidelines in a lawn chair with a beer in hand during games - not the case. Often I don't actually know what happened on the field until a) after the game or b) if I have the opportunity to see a replay on the video board. As an employee we are part of the organization. That in and of itself is a privilege. With that comes the responsibility of keeping your fandom under wraps most of the time. We cheer for the team because we are a part of it and the success of the team is important to us as members. Not as fans.

Today, we connect with Josh Sours ‘13. Josh captures the best game moments as a Camera Utility at AT&T Stadium. 

Q: What’s it like to work for the Dallas Cowboys?

A: It's an amazing experience, especially watching your hometown team in action inches from the field. From walking by celebrities to getting that perfect camera shot of a big play, it’s always exciting and rewarding. The friendships I have made with my own event presentation coworkers will last a lifetime, and I wouldn't trade the last five years for anything.

 Q: How did UTA prepare you for your current position? Did UTA help you land this job?

A: I majored in broadcast communications at UTA. My senior year, one of the Cowboys officials came and toured UTA Radio and the UTA News set, and inquired about interns for the upcoming season. After applying and going through a couple of interviews, I was brought on and worked specifically with Cowboys radio and podcasts. Being in UTA Radio, I was able to apply the skill sets I was learning to helping out the Dallas Cowboys, and vice versa. After my internship, I was brought on as a Camera Utility and Cameraman at the stadium. I would not have received that offer at all if it wasn't for the fantastic opportunities at UTA, especially in the broadcasting department. 

 Q: At what point in the season did you realize it was going to be a special year for the Cowboys?

A: I think when it really sank in was against the Cincinnati Bengals when Zeke had a 60 yard touchdown run and jumped into the crowd. I was on the 3rd level at the time, and the stadium was rocking. The fans are happier and louder. They are in the parking lot at the break of dawn, and they stick around after midnight too.

 Q: What is one fact about AT&T Stadium that most people don’t know?

A: I think the one fact that most people don't know is how much work goes into a simple "game" At our meetings 6 hours before kickoff, everyone has a piece of the pie to make it go so seamlessly. From cameraman, audio, pyro, flags, cheerleaders and so much more, everyone has to be near perfect with their performance for everything to go so smoothly, much less what happens on the field. 

 Q: Have you always dreamed of a job in professional sports?

A: I have, ever since high school. I did not think it was possible until I decided to go to UTA and major in broadcasting. Being in the metroplex has helped out, because it is a hot bed of sports and entertainment. It is an amazing feeling knowing I am able to attend these events. Before each kickoff, I always take a look around and soak in the moment.
