CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY

(trigger warning: child abuse, neglect, alcoholism, parental death)

Adam Stewart was born August 18th 1991 to Sheryl and Alan Stewart in their New York City apartment. Their relationship, already highly toxic, was only worsened by their new “burden”. As he grew older, Adam would often question why they’d even chosen to have a child.

Alan would come to blame the child’s screaming for his dependency on alcohol, a lie which Adam believed for far too long. It was, instead, because he was not being properly cared for. Still, Adam survived infancy, by the grace of his magical genetics and the care of his grandmother. Though she understood her son was a destructive man, she never saw the full breadth of it.

At home, Adam was never truly safe. His father’s nature was always fluctuating, either ignoring the child, or taking out his frustrations upon him. Sheryl, a witch, had never been very skilled at magic, but she learned to heal the wounds that didn’t naturally heal themselves. Though she had other motivations to heal him, Adam would often recall these moments as symptoms of, perhaps, some amount of love she had for him.

Needless to say, life was difficult and terrifying for Adam, and so, he often found himself wandering outside, hoping to find something better. At seven years old, he was crouched beside a decrepit old building, unaware he was being watched. He summoned a cat to him, wielding the magic intentionally. This scene was seen by a teenage witch, who was kind to him and took in the kitten in his arms.

Adam spent many of his childhood hours with her, enraptured by her kindness. It was profound to him, that someone would ever care for him without motivation. and so, unsurprisingly, he fell deeply in love with her. Of course, it was a double edged sword, but he couldn’t help himself.

When the time came to attend Ilvermony, Adam had very little, only the second hand books and robes from his mother. Upon choosing Horned Serpent, he hoped he’d joined somewhere he’d fit in. He’d never did seem to fit in among his peers, though, this was largely because he barely knew how to talk to people.

It was pretty soon that he fell in with the “wrong crowd”, aligning himself with the sorts who hated those unlike them. When first asked if he was a pureblood, Adam had lied. Lying, it seemed to him, was the best way to fit in with his peers. Though he wouldn’t admit to it, he did, secretly, desperately crave companionship.

That lie came with ramifications, and Adam found himself having to pretend to believe what they believed; he wasn’t sure he entirely did. Though he’d seen first hand what some no-majs would do when threatened, he couldn’t entirely believe that would be the reaction of them all. He’d, too, studied history, and he knew the matter was far more complicated than either side tended to let on.

It was during the summer, just before Adam’s 17th birthday, that his father passed away. His feelings for this were complicated, but ultimately, he was now the sole caretaker for his mother. During his early years as an auror, Adam was struggling with her care and his career. Eventually, it came to a head, and he ended up placing her in an elderly care, in spite of the fact that she was far younger than most of the other wix.

Perhaps it was his love for history that made Adam so keen to join the Department of Aurors. They had often been on the forefront, making history themselves. The work also was consuming, often keeping away the pain of isolation and his fear that he would never amount to anything. The contentious relationships between no-majs and wix was becoming difficult to ignore, and Adam realised that his position within the government meant he’d have to side with them. Still, he hopes perhaps to play some part in the change he believes must come; though, this, like so much about the young man, is a closely guarded secret.

HEADCANONS

Perhaps surprisingly, Adam is privately an artist, creating portraits and abstract paintings in his apartment.

Adam lives alone with two cats, one an elderly fawn tabby named Cassiopeia, the other a younger black cat named Desdemona.

Adam has never told anyone his birthday, outside of when it is necessary. He’s also never had a birthday party, and has no intention of breaking that trend.

If offered a gift of any kind, Adam will reject it vehemently - it would be remarkably difficult to get him to accept anything.

Secretly, Adam loves muggle music, particularly The Smiths, The Cure, and Joy Division. He has a somewhat robust vinyl record collection.

Though he rarely discusses his sexual orientation, Lorcan D'eath was his initial awakening to it.

Adam has never so much as kissed anyone, though he’s unlikely to bring it up.

FAMILY TREE

SHERYL STEWART [ née PRICE ] born 1971 attended ILVERMONY and was sorted into the PUKWUDGIE house. She married ALAN STEWART from a long line of NO MAJS. They had ONE child. ALAN passed away in 2007. SHERYL has outlived ALAN by SEVEN years so far.

EILEEN STEWART [ née MADISON ] born 1943 attended NORTH QUEENS HIGH SCHOOL. She married ALBERT STEWART and had THREE children. Both the children and parents are NO MAJS. ALBERT passed away in 1971, EILEEN passed away in 2006.

DINAH PRICE [ née FERGUSON ] born 1948 attended ILVERMONY and was sorted into the THUNDERBIRD house. She married ANTHONY PRICE, and both were PUREBLOOD. They had FOUR children. DINAH and ANTHONY are still living.
