Migrant Domestic Workers in Singapore
Set in 1997 Singapore during the Asian Financial Crisis, Anthony Chen’s film Ilo Ilo paints a story a Filipina domestic worker named Teresa who has come to Singapore in search for a better life. Teresa becomes the newly hired helper of the Lim family and is confronted with hardship in caring for the family’s son.

In Singapore, around 60% of the maids are exploited by their employers. These domestic workers are expected to clean homes, cook meals and care for wealthy families under low wages and often exploitative conditions. These workers are primarily Filipinos and Indonesians who are granted little time off work and are verbally and physically abused.
The majority of foreign domestic workers in Singapore endure exploitative conditions out of economic distress with no viable alternative to employment. As a result, these workers remain working and living under horrendous conditions.
There has undoubtedly some work in supporting these female domestic workers, including the efforts of Robina Navato who volunteers for the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics. Navato consuls her fellow domestic workers on their rights and provides access to shelter for those wishing to escape abusive employers.
As a Commerce student, I believe there’s an opportunity to contribute my learnings to empower migrant domestic workers through financial literacy workshops. To provide some perspective, only 51% of migrant domestic workers in Singapore have access to bank accounts. There is a clear need to improve the financial knowledge and awareness amongst these women, and I believe applying basic finance concepts as a foundation to developing free workshops can constitute as meaningful engagement by supporting these workers to be financially independent and confident in maintaining long-term financial security for their own families. These workshops can be designed to go over core concepts like setting up a bank account, budgeting and investing.

Mindful Tourism in Jordan
An opportunity for tourists to meaningfully engage is through by empowering women economically. One example of this is through supporting businesses, for example, Bait Khayrat Souf.
This business aims to provide local women with a platform to financially support themselves by making and selling natural and handmade products (Simms 2019).
Another similar business is Beit Sitti, which employs local women to take cooking classes.
As an individual with enough wealth to travel far and wide, I believe that I have an ability and opportunity to spend my money responsibly.
Supporting business that aim to empower women by raising their standard of living and allowing them to engage economically is an example of meaningful engagement.
This highlights my belief that is important in an increasingly globalised world to support local businesses.
As referred to in my last blog post, the Syrian Civil War has resulted in a devastating refugee crisis and Jordan has been active in helping these individuals. As a global citizen, I too feel it is my duty to meaningfully engage with this refugee crisis.
One opportunity to do so is by supporting the Syrian Jasmine House. This is a business that employs Syrian refugees that are overwhelmingly female and may be widowed or have had to leave their husband (Shapiro 2018).
7 percent of Syrian women in Jordan are employed, so supporting social enterprises that endeavour to financially support these women is important (Shapiro 2018).
Tourists are encouraged to buy the products, as well as engage in experiences, for example, Aleppo soap making and crochet classes (Jordan Tourism 2020). By choosing to be an ethical and thoughtful tourist, I believe one experiences a more meaningful experience, in which fully aims to understand, and support local grievances.

The top photo is a map of all the Airbnb rentals in Barcelona, I was very shocked when I saw this! The bottom photo is locals holding a banner saying ‘no to tourist apartments’.

Choose to be developmental, don’t opt for a holiday rental.
When thinking about an issue for meaningful engagement in Catalonia, I immediately thought back to my blogpost on anti-tourism street art and how, as tourists, we may have inadvertently and rather ironically created a situation that requires international engagement as a result of our international travels.
I am passionate about meaningful engagement, especially the idea of a bottom-up approach to improving a situation. That is, empowering locals to establish community-led remedies rather than an imposition of foreign volunteers deciding what's 'best' without accounting for the wishes of the people at 'the bottom'.
Even amongst the wealthiest nations in the world, homelessness is an important problem, and in Catalonia, many people are displaced for economic reasons such as not having a job not or not being able to pay rent. The Encuesta de Servicios Municpales de Barcelona (municipal services survey Barcelona) found that access to housing was the biggest problem for residents in 2018 with tourism being named as the cause because it has increased rent tremendously and Airbnb style rentals are taking homes away from locals.
Tumblr media
I believe meaningful engagement does not simply equate to mass international charities and organisations aiding those who need it (although it's an important part), meaningful engagement is vital on the individual level too. For example, as tourists, we should make conscious decisions when visiting a tourist destination to ensure we aren't bringing harm or negative consequences. For me, choosing to listen to the wishes of locals is the first step in bottom-up development and choosing not to stay in an Airbnb is the first step in meaningful engagement for Catalonia.

New work for Cause an Effect... #Repost @lauraescayg • • • • • • “The word Autism popped up sometimes. I would try to convince myself that it was just a delay; that children achieve their milestones at different times, the race is not for the swift, early childhood development has a wide age-range. I said everything to myself in order to convince myself that Autism would not become a part of my daily reality. But during this time, I would see my babies shy away from people and other children, struggle with communication and speech, their motor skills, their socialization, all the while thinking that it will all fall into place in time.” To view Lyra Thompson Hollingsworth’s story visit http://causeaneffect.co/lyra-thompson-hollingsworth/ Sponsors: Dale McLeod, Jacqueline Scott, Starlite Collection, Sacha Makeup, JB Fernandez Memorial Trust II, Christopher Rodrigues, Portia De Clou, John Marchan, Autism Who Knew? I was crushed to say the least, my poor kiddo couldn’t put together a simple 4 piece puzzle - no matter how she coached him; he just lined up the pieces in a neat pattern. He really liked making neat patterns from things. There were other things: he couldn’t replicate simple structures she made from a few wooden blocks, he couldn’t visualize things she pretended to have inside her enclosed palm. #Repost... ・・・ Dear Friends, well wishers and supporters, The last time we wrote from change.org, we indicated that once progress was made with the TTARC name change we would inform you all. In December 2018 we reached out to the Attorney General about this matter and requested his advocacy on this as his office could have had a direct and significant impact on moving this matter forward. He responded immediately and committed to being the advocate who would table this bill for debate and dissolution of the name change in the Parliament. By January 2019 his team at his office shared with us the relevant sample documents that the TTARC needed to submit for them to draft the bill. Because of this petition the head of the Legislative committee, Senator The Honourable Clarence Rambharat, reached out to us offering to assist with moving this matter forward with the legislative committee. We accepted, reached out to the TTARC indicating that the ground work had been done and that the way had been cleared for them to move forward with their application. The Chairman of the TTARC Mr. Howard Sabga responded positively and indicated that they would be moving forward with resubmitting their application based on the information the Attorney General’s Office shared with Cause An Effect. We have been reliably informed that the TTARC’s request for a name change will head to the Parliament this year for debate and dissolution of their name and we thank each one of you who signed in support of this. Those in charge took notice of and acknowledged your collective voices and we at Cause An Effect thank you for your contribution to moving this matter forward. We are going to be starting a new petition to advocate for changes in the Health and Education Ministries for desperately needed services for our children with disabilities and hope that you will once again stand with us in advocating for change.
