Magnetic Academy: Meet Martin Paberit
Magnetic Group has launched a new workforce training program, the Magnetic Academy, to educate a new generation of aircraft technicians in Estonia. In this light, it is a pleasure to introduce Martin Paberit, a Lead Mechanic in Magnetic MRO.
In 2020, Martin started in the company as an apprentice and was also the fan favorite at the “Praktik Cum Laude” Best Apprentice in Estonia contest in 2021. Let’s see what advice he has to give to people who are thinking about starting their aviation career with Magnetic Academy.
How did your career in aviation and Magnetic MRO start?
I was stuck in my comfort zone in my previous workplace in logistics. I had done that work for over 10 years and I wanted to bring change into my life. The aviation industry had been attractive to me already for years and I had applied for several jobs in aviation but without success.
Tumblr media
One day in January 2020 I saw an advertisement in the Estonian plane spotters Facebook group, where Magnetic MRO was looking for new candidates for a vocational study group. I applied and got selected.    What were your first impressions upon joining Magnetic MRO?
I was excited to be near aircraft every day - to see how they’re built, what parts and components are removed for maintenance repair and overhaul and to learn how airplanes work. Also, the people were mostly friendly and helpful. There was a lot of new information in the beginning about how work and studies are exactly organized, which logbooks and how much I need to fill them etc.     How has your career developed since you first started as an apprentice in 2020?
After working in the base maintenance department for almost 4 years I have achieved the maximum level that an unlicensed mechanic can achieve in the Magnetic MRO base maintenance department. I have become a level 3 lead mechanic. But that is not the end. I have already taken steps to become a licensed technician, hopefully in 2025.    Can you share a specific moment during your apprenticeship that significantly stands out or shaped your skills and career aspirations?
The physical aircraft engine maintenance and repair process consists of teams working in different zones. When I started to work in the so-called engine zone during my rotation period, then I felt that this was the zone where I wanted to work in the future as well. Not that other zones are less important, but for me, the engine zone felt the most interesting. I still work in other zones from time to time if needed - it's good to get practical experience from all work zones.    What are your main responsibilities? How would you describe your work?
I perform many different maintenance tasks - starting from simple tasks like opening access panels or removing landing gear wheels. Finishing with more complex tasks like performing tests or assembling different components. All according to maintenance manuals or other related documents.
As a lead mechanic, from time to time I also need to guide the less experienced and younger mechanics and trainees and take responsibility for organizing our teamwork or replacing our zone-leader.    What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting a career in aviation and joining Magnetic Academy?
If you are passionate about airplanes, interested in technical hands-on work, and want a secure job in the aviation industry, you should apply. The beginning may be hard and there will be a lot to learn. But in the long term, it is a great opportunity to become a specialist who is needed in Estonia and abroad.

Best trade careers that you can opt for
If you are searching for a career path which does not entail four years of college and yet has a comfortable income, a career may be the best choice. Manual work positions involving a particular skill set or experience are known as business occupations. Many occupations have on-the-job instruction, or you can somehow go to a high school and get to work in less than just two years. Jobs include engineers, plumbers, welders and otherwise paramedics within other types of professions.
The health care sector is a thriving trading field. In 2016, the median salary for a surgical sonographer was $64,280, and therefore the respiratory therapy was $58,670, as reported mostly by the Office of Labor Statistics. Whenever you equate these wages to a minimum salary, a job in industry is a good choice. New trades career is a great way to start your career.
Tumblr media
Construction Trades
Construction trade includes a wide range of construction work, including carpentry work, hardwood flooring, masonry and otherwise plumbing. If you really want to start work quickly and also have some of the basic skills, you can indeed work as another painter, a landscaper or otherwise a carpet installer with somehow very little preparation or personal experience. As now you are learning to trade, you can plan to open your own small business or otherwise move to a somewhat larger company. If you wish to become a qualified electrician, plumber, water pipe fitter or even welder, you may need to go to the vocational school for completing your apprenticeship. For an example, being an electrician involves learning to trade, being an apprentice and working alongside a qualified electrician before becoming approved. This path will actually take five years, so you are going to get paying whilst in school. New trades career reviews are usually very good.
Mechanical Commerce
Many of the mechanical trades actually require a certification of expertise that applies to two stages of qualification. The very first level is indeed referred to as the particular level of flight and this includes an apprenticeship or even training equal to that. Perhaps the second degree is the level of the master. Then you really must usually work as a traveller or traveller for a period of one year and take the ability exam to become a master. Attaining instead a college degree or attending courses at a technical school offers additional experience, but it is necessary to gain credentials through vocational schooling or apprenticeships. Serving as a mechanic trade assistant whilst in high school or otherwise networking mostly with mechanic experts will indeed help you pave the way.
Industrial Exchange
Industrial trade includes employment rooted in industry and technology. These occupations include architecture, construction and major problem solving. High school diplomas are typically the first prerequisite, but you can be differentiated by special qualifications, prior knowledge and specialized education. As other business roles, you can earn an apprenticeship by entering this sector. If you are hired, you can indeed complete your own apprenticeship requirements whilst you are working. Employment in the industrial trading field offers an incentive for development. You may be somewhat elevated to a foreman or otherwise supervisory position just after you have gained the requisite experience.

Arup’s new class of 2021 aiming to engineer exciting careers
Tumblr media
NEWS FEATURES FIRE & SECURITY SUBMISSIONS RESOURCES
Arup has welcomed a fresh intake of apprentices and newly qualified graduates to support its Nottingham team’s work on a wide range of major projects.
The sought-after roles underline the company’s commitment to the city and its continued growth in the region, as well as providing a huge boost for its successful apprenticeship scheme.
Two recently recruited apprentice technicians and two new university graduates are now part of the 100-plus strong city team.
Four further Nottingham-based apprentices have also recently completed their part-time degrees with the company.
John Read, Nottingham office leader at Arup, said: “We are delighted that they are with us and look forward to seeing their careers develop as they take advantage of the enormous opportunities that working for Arup can provide.
“It’s hugely important to be able to attract and train the next generation of engineers and technicians. We’re very proud that our role in recruiting local apprentices continues to pay dividends.”
Arup’s world-class designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists work across all aspects of the built environment.
The Nottingham office has been involved in many projects which have helped shape the city and beyond in the last 30 years, including the Old Market Square redevelopment, the University of Nottingham Jubilee Campus and the expansion of East Midlands Airport. The team has also delivered the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick and is working on many local healthcare, education and manufacturing sector projects.
The firm has a formal apprenticeship route, which starts with two years of combining work, off the job training & learning and a day a week during term time at college to gain a level 3 advanced apprenticeship qualification. A further five years on a level 6 degree apprenticeship including a day a week at a university leads to a full bachelor’s degree.
“When they’re not training they are actively working on projects, using the software for building modelling,” explained John. “Apprenticeships have become a very appealing route for school leavers because, although it might take longer while they complete them through spending part of their time at college and university, they are receiving a full salary for doing a job while gaining an advanced apprenticeship and then for those who continue to higher level study, a degree.”
New apprentice technicians Alice Lamb and David Simpson have joined the buildings mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineering team.
The apprentices who have completed their part-time degrees this year include Gemma Broughton, Luke Webster and Ross Bramley.
A fourth apprentice, Sean Chapman, has trained to be an M&E engineer,. Meanwhile, two new graduates have also been recruited recently. Paddy Appelqvist joins Arup’s rapidly expanding railway engineering team in Nottingham and Holly Townsend, also 23, who got a first-class degree in architectural engineering at the University of Leeds.
Arup, which has its headquarters in London, employs 6,000 people across 17 UK offices, and thousands more worldwide. It took on 14 apprentices and 21 graduates between its offices in Nottingham and Birmingham this autumn, and 245 graduates and 74 apprentices in total across the UK.
The Nottingham office recently saw colleagues Vicky Evans and Steve Fernandez promoted to directors of the global firm.

Smart water solutions contribute to low-carbon agenda in the Hunter
A two-year contract extension signed between Veolia and Hunter Water is set to secure more than just high-quality water services for the region. As the country’s leading water experts, Veolia will deploy solutions involving innovative technology to deliver against enhanced wastewater targets and generate the highest-quality water the Lower Hunter has seen. While nurturing the next generation of water engineers, and driving low-carbon outputs, the contract will make new headway in combating climate change.
Hunter Water serves the needs of over 600,000 people living and working in the region. Veolia, Australia’s leader in ecological transformation and Hunter Water’s operation and maintenance contractor, delivers safe, high-quality drinking water, and treats millions of litres of wastewater across the region every day. Following almost eight successful years delivering water services, Veolia has now secured a two-year extension on its contract.
The extension will see new heights reached in water quality and wastewater treatment for the region. Working closely with Hunter Water, Veolia has already identified eight ways to enhance drinking water standards and a further 46 ways to improve its sewage treatment activities. These will ensure continued excellent water quality for the community and help to better preserve biodiversity.
In addition, new Energy Tracking (e-Tracking) technology developed by Veolia will monitor the energy performance of the treatment plants, delivering consumption efficiencies that reduce its carbon footprint. The e-Tracking system will also assess operational conditions and deliver real-time alerts to operators on energy performance, facilitating prompt action where necessary.
Led by a team of 20 water engineers and technical experts, Veolia will have trained nine graduate engineers, eight cadet engineers and eight electrical and mechanical apprentices by the end of its 10-year tenure.
Daniel Spiller, Chief Operating Officer for Veolia ANZ said:
“Veolia works with the brightest minds and uses the best technology available to meet the water needs of the Lower Hunter community, whilst protecting the waterways and wildlife that surround our operations. We’ve worked hard over the past seven years to innovate so that water quality standards continue to improve, whilst finding solutions that achieve decarbonisation — we call this ecological transformation.
“Our extended contract with Hunter Water will allow us to continue putting people and the environment at the heart of what we do. This remains a priority, as does our investment in young people through cadetships and apprenticeships, as they will be the next generation of water workers for the region.”
Executive Manager Customer Delivery, Clint Thomson from Hunter Water said:
“We’re pleased to award a contract extension to Veolia, who share in our vision for the future of water in the Lower Hunter. As custodians of the water cycle for our customers and communities, it is critical that we maintain safe, high-quality and efficient water services, protect our environment, and develop the next generation of water professionals. Building on the achievements of the partnership so far, we have clear service delivery targets and continuous improvement objectives, and we’re working hard to achieve our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.”

Windermere Steamboat Museum Building Construction Update
Design: Carmody Groarke Architects
This new museum on the lake displays an internationally significant boat collection.
Full advantage has been taken of the mild winter weather building up the walls of the café, learning space and reception.
The copper roof has been completed to the learning centre building and the cladding specialists have moved on to covering the reception roof.
The structural wall system has also started on the main exhibition building, the largest of the buildings, beginning to enclose the space and frame more of the views out to the lake.
A number of the roofs are nearing completion with the installation of rooflights to the boathouse and café.
Pipes and wires are also beginning to appear as the first fix for services begins around the museum buildings.

Windermere Steamboat Museum secures Heritage Lottery Fund investment
The Lakeland Arts Trust is delighted to announce that the Windermere Steamboat Museum Project has been awarded a confirmed grant of £9.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Windermere Steamboat Museum building design by Carmody Groarke: image © Carmody Groarke, from Lakeland Arts Trust
The Project will create a new museum on the lake to display the internationally significant collection, connecting boats, people and stories. The high-quality museum facilities will include a wet dock where visitors will see boats displayed on the water, collection displays where visitors can discover about the people who built the boats, who used them and how they were used, an active conservation workshop and a dedicated learning space.
New jetties will also connect people to the lake enabling visitors to arrive by boat or take a trip on a historic launch whilst the lake side café will provide exceptional views across Windermere.
Martin Ainscough, Chairman of the Lakeland Arts Trust, said: ‘This decision secures a total of £13.4 million investment into Cumbria creating employment and new opportunities for local people. I would like to thank all the project team members who put an enormous amount of work in to developing the plans for the Museum and securing this fantastic grant for the region’.
Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of the Lakeland Arts Trust, said: ‘We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has confirmed the grant to the Museum and thank them for their tremendous support. Immediate steps are to complete design development so that construction can start next year. We are looking forward to re-opening the Museum and welcoming visitors to enjoy the wonderful collection of Windermere boats and take part in exciting new activities and events inspired by the collections and beautiful site’.
Tiffany Hunt, Chair of HLF North West Committee, said: ‘This wonderful collection of historic boats is now set to be housed in a new and sustainable museum, spectacularly located on Lake Windermere. We felt strongly that this was a great opportunity to invest a significant amount of money in an area that relies heavily on tourism as well as reveal the social histories behind the local boatbuilding industry.
Equally important will be opportunities for people to acquire traditional skills and get involved with caring for these steamboats which are such a culturally distinctive part of Cumbria’s landscape.’ The Lakeland Arts Trust has raised over £3 million match funding for the project and needs to raise a further £300,000 to meet the total project costs of £13.4 million. The Trust is working with an excellent design team on the project including Carmody Groarke, architects, Arup, engineers and Real Studios, exhibition designers.

Windermere Steamboat Museum Building Planning
Windermere Steamboat Museum Planning Application Submission
The Lakeland Arts Trust has applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a confirmed grant, having previously secured their initial support and is delighted to announce that it is applying for planning permission to redevelop the Windermere Steamboat Museum as a world-class heritage attraction and a major part of the Windermere Waterfront Programme.
This long-awaited project will enable the Museum to re-open to the public so that local people and visitors can once again enjoy seeing the unique collection of boats. All the historic boats are associated with Windermere and together they tell the history of over 200 years of leisure, industry and trade on the lake.
Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of the Lakeland Arts Trust said ‘this is an important step forward for the project to turn the Museum into a popular tourist attraction which offers a very special and exciting experience for visitors. We want to involve local people and visitors in the Museum and to offer a wide range of activities for school children, families and older people.
The new facilities are essential to enable the Museum to re-open. The Museum will create year-round employment and the economic impact assessment shows that the Museum will enable an estimated 94 direct and indirect jobs to be created and safeguarded across a range of roles. The Museum will also offer apprenticeships and training and give volunteers opportunities to develop new skills and experience.’
Martin Ainscough, Chair of the Lakeland Arts Trust said ‘the Museum will be the most significant development on Windermere over the next few years. We are seeking to invest over £13 million in South Lakeland and planning consent is essential to secure the investment. Funding from a number of organisations, including trusts and foundations as well as individual donors and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Rural Development Programme for England and a conditional offer from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund has enabled us to develop the detailed designs and plans for the Museum.’
The Museum has the strategic support of the key agencies in Cumbria and the North West including the Lake District National Park, Cumbria Tourism, Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership.
The completed museum will be self-sustaining with no core statutory funding. The Museum expects to receive 100,000 visitors per annum, with between 200 – 300 groups engaging with the schools’ programme. As part of this self-sustaining vision, the Museum will:
Support the on-going maintenance and conservation of the collection.
Provide a high quality formal and informal learning programme for children, young people and adults.
Deliver a changing programme of temporary displays and public events.
The boat collection at the Museum is of national and international significance. The UK’s National Historic Ships lists 11 boats in the collection as nationally pre-eminent and four are members of the elite National Historic Fleet. The best known part of the collection is the ten classic Windermere steam launches of the 1890s and 1900s.
Other highlights include SL Dolly (1850) the oldest mechanically powered boat in the world, SY Esperance (1869) built for steel magnate Henry Schneider and inspiration for Captain Flint’s houseboat in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons, Canfly (1922) powered by a 1917 Rolls Royce aero engine, and, in stark contrast, Beatrix Potter’s tarn boat that she used to sketch in on Moss Eccles Tarn. The Lakeland Arts Trust selected the design team for the Museum in 2011.
The architects are Carmody Groarke and they have designed a beautiful collection of buildings located around the original wet dock. Andy Groarke, director of Carmody Groarke said: ‘This is an important opportunity to create a new museum building that is right for the beautiful lakeshore of Windermere, and which can provide a world-class visitor attraction for generations to come.’
Andrew Groarke describes the design: ‘The new museum has been arranged as a cluster of buildings within the landscape on the lakeshore. The composition of its pitched-roof forms is intended to forge a strong connection between visitors, boats and water. They are characterised by large canopies which frame views to and from the lake, but also provide all weather shelter around the perimeter of the museum.
Each individual building has been designed around a very different visitor experience related to boats: on land or on water. The museum development will include exhibition space for displaying boats, telling the stories of their construction, of their owners and their use on Windermere. A conservation workshop where visitors can watch boat builders and apprentices at work on the collection will form a key element of the visitor experience.
At the heart of the of the museum will be the wet-dock where boats will be displayed on water. In addition to the core display space, a learning centre offering an inspiring programme for visitors of all ages will be central to the development, as will a new museum cafe which will take opportunity of magnificent views to the north of Windermere.’

Clutch great careers in Architecture and Construction with advanced BIM training.
There’s a myriad of options for individuals in the field of architecture and construction. Contractors can layout jobs for plumbers, electricians, and other trade workers. While architectural drafters work on building blueprints for complex projects, architects design projects, determine the building structure, and select construction materials.
Tumblr media
Let’s consider the essentials of Architecture and Construction Careers.
Individuals in the field of Architecture and Construction need to design and build projects from roads to skyscrapers. Whilst architecture stays closer to design, construction looks more closely at various other facets viz. estimation, materials, inspection, etc. Several career requirements and options for professionals in the architecture and construction industry include –
Associate or Bachelors' degree in Architecture from the American Design Drafting Association. The projected job growth up to the year 2028 is projected to be 8% for Architects, and the Median Salary is around $90,000 per year.
Architects
Architects plan and design construction projects, and it includes building structures, materials, etc. Architects typically meet up with clients to determine their needs and requirements. Furthermore, Architects may collaborate with project engineers and architectural drafters to understand structural issues and building systems. Job responsibilities for these profiles include finding the locations for vacuum systems, HVAC, and heating systems. Architects also help with the evaluation of steel or concrete applications.
Architectural Drafters
Architectural drafters also referred to as Architectural Designers use various tools and software to sketch out preliminary and final designs for buildings and facilities. Drafters do acquire expertise in a specific field for various project types viz. residential, commercial, or even industrial design. The requirements to become an Architectural Drafter include an Associate’s Degree in Architecture Design or Drafting, or it may even include a certificate in the related field. To enhance job opportunities, Architectural Drafters may require a certification from the American Design Drafting Association.
Construction Laborers
People under these profiles perform job site duties like preparing onsite delivery of materials to ready construction equipment. Laborers may specialize in various tasks like assembling scaffolds, hang drywall, etc. New hires can leverage knowledge and experience through apprenticeships or on-job training. An Apprenticeship can last for 2-4 years and include instruction and work experience. The median salary for construction laborers would be around #40,000, and the growth potential until the year 2028 would be 11% over the decade.
Trade Contractors
Trade contractors specialize in various aspects of construction viz. plumbing, electrical, fire protection systems, etc. Individuals from these profiles learn their trade through apprenticeship programs or various classroom or online certifications. A plumbing apprentice may become a master by soldering fittings and pipes in practical training & work experience. These individuals can go on and work for plumbing contractors or general contractors, or become licensed plumbing contractors. They can also gain a competitive advantage and enhanced employment opportunities through certification from the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials. The job growth until the year 2028 for trade contractors is increasing by 14%, and the median salary would be around $55,000.
Conclusion
Educational requirements for a career in Architecture and Construction vary for various individuals. Classroom training, Online Training, or On-Job training for profiles mentioned above can prepare for great careers in 2021 and beyond. To clutch exceptional jobs in this sector, Architects, Drafters, Contractors, Laborers, etc. can leverage job portals in the US like iFCast.

Hinkley bosses halt plans to “deskill” electricians
Controversial plans to introduce a new grade of electrical operative at the massive Hinkley Point C construction site have been put on hold.
The move by client EDF follows complaints from Unite and a campaign by rank-and-file electricians who have threatened widespread demonstrations.
Sparks started the first round of protests last week claiming the plans would lead to a “deskilling” of the industry.
Tumblr media
Hinkley client EDF and the MEH Alliance of Balfour Beatty and NG Bailey has been looking to introduce training courses for ‘Electrical Support Operatives’.
The courses introduced by the Engineering Construction Training Board (ECITB) would teach apprentices to eventually support qualified electricians to install cable trays and ladders and help pull cables.
Unite said that would undermine the role of the electrician and raised the issue with EDF who have postponed the training plan “until the problem has been resolved.”
Tumblr media
The last attempt to change pay grades in the sector was the ‘BESNA’ reforms in 2011 which were abandoned by employers following a concerted protest campaign by workers.
Unite General Secretary Len McCluskey said “The undermining of the role of the electrician has been attempted for more than 30 years, most recently in 2011/12 when eight of the major mechanical and electrical construction companies promoted the use of non-electrical personnel to carry out skilled electrical tasks under the so called BESNA agreement.
“Unite defeated the BESNA agreement then and we will defeat this latest attempt to deskill electricians.
“Our message to the industry is clear. Unite and its electrical membership will oppose any and all efforts to weaken the skill set of the trade which will undermine the industry by introducing non-skilled operatives.
Tumblr media
“Any deskilling of electricians would result in a race to the bottom and would be highly damaging to industrial relations across the sector.”
An EDF spokesperson said: “Productive talks are now taking place to reach agreement on the curriculum of the new training courses.”

Tumblr media
The health care sector is a thriving trading field. In 2016, the median salary for a surgical sonographer was $64,280, and therefore the respiratory therapy was $58,670, as reported mostly by the Office of Labor Statistics. Whenever you equate these wages to a minimum salary, a job in industry is a good choice. New trades career is a great way to start your career.
Tumblr media
